    Just one example why Neil was so unique. Always thinking outside the box with a force unlike anyone else. Remember as a kid playing this record over and over just trying to take it all in. Still amazed at the talent of Rush.

    Amazing. Simply amazing. I've never heard this isolated before, and it's like a song in itself. One of those rare tracks you can listen to, and not be looking and waiting for the rest of the song to kick in. I honestly don't like in live performances where there's a several minute guitar solo, or a drum solo or whatever. I want to hear the songs, not someone noodling around on stage.
    When I see a drum kit like Neil's, one of two things cones to mind; it's either a showoff who really only uses about ⅓ of it, or it's a very accomplished musician who's very confident of his abilities, and rightfully so. Seriously, that's a lot of kit to keep under control and very few people have the technical ability to pull it off. There are plenty of drummers out there who play fast, or all over their kit, but I think Neil was probably one of the few who actually understood how to pull it all together and make a drum track sound like its own song, one that doesn't need anything else.

    Tom Sawyer brought me to Rush, I vividly remember TRYING to learn this, just the drums.. a complete failure. Not a drummer at all, but I recognized Neal's talents without knowing why way back as a college Freshman. I listened over and over. My 1sr concert, Ever! I now play keyboard, I am in absolute awe of his unique beats...the rests, the surprising beats/sounds, more! I thought it was just me trying to hit these beats. Love this! Thank you for isolating the drums. One of their best songs. 😊

      @Greywulf12010--I can relate. Rush has been my go-to music for decades as well. When I feel bummed or pissed or down, I come back to 'the boys' and their collective of awesome sound. My heart is still sad about the loss of Neil. I know we all will go at some point. I'd hoped he would have the opportunity to mentor (more personally) some already great up-and-coming drummer(s) similar to the affect Freddy Gruber had on him. I do feel 'mentored' as a person, as a man by the philosophy of Rush, each of the band members and their beautiful music. Know where I can get quality RUSH bumper stickers? :) Take good care and keep safe!

      Well, many drummers have double tracked parts before, not new. But using a slew of African drums used in the multi-tracking was pretty unique and very effective

    The interesting thing about this drum track is that Neil double tracked it, unfortunately this is only one of the drum tracks. The other drum track kicks in at the 2:20 mark on the original recording and goes to the end.

    Interesting you can really hear the Conga clearly in the beginning... obviously an over dub along with the cowbell per his notes on the recording. I believe by the time the Time Machine tour happened he was playing the cowbell part with a foot trigger.

  • @petrilampela

    One thing I dont get, when the section with the cowbell starts, the last hit on each bar is really quiet. Like the last hits were left out of isolated and kept at the same volume as the rest of the track. Why is this?

      There was a missing drum sound in the intro, one of the African drums. Not sure why just that one was left out of iso track.

  • @bentleyaudio
    @bentleyaudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool - except there is a *key* drum hit that is missing! In the 16 bar drum section (which repeats), it's the very last hit - it's deep and heavy "flam" upon a "simmons" electronic Tom, occuring on an up-beat, just before the whole 16 bar pattern repeats. Don't mean to criticize, but it was immediately noticeable that it was absent, so I just thought you might want to know. I suppose the software maY Have inadvertantly removed it, while it was isolating the drum track. - Cheers

    I totally appreciate this however there is a drum not heard in the beginning of the song. It's the one that goes Dewwwww. If you listen to the studio version, it stands out. I don't hear it here which makes me wonder where the recording is from. There is also something else around the beginning that seems a hair different with a drum. Just my feedback. I have the song memorized and something is off

    • @RobSwindell
      @RobSwindell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's true, this is not the same drum mix as the album. I'm pretty confident it's the same performances (there are multiple overdubbed performances), but not all of the original drum tracks appear to be represented. It's possible a drum hit or two was moved around as well (not sure why). If you've ever played this song on Rock Band (the video game), you would notice the same difference there.
