Assassin's Creed is INCONSISTENT...

  • Assassin's Creed over the years has become very inconsistent. With multiple different studios all working on games at the same time and Ubisoft not having a clear structure or plan for the series it's become a bit of a mess. Back when Assassin's Creed first started it was only Ubisoft Montreal led by Patrice Desilets working on these games, which is why the first 3-4 games felt so consistent and continuous. There was improvement and progression in each new game, and on top of all that the stories of all those games were connected. Today it feels like each game is kind of a standalone (with the rare exception of Basim being in Mirage and Valhalla). Not only do the stories rarely connect but a lot of the games fail to build off of what worked in its predecessor...

I think one of the main reasons the series became inconsistent is because after Désilets left, they threw the common thread and the lore of the stories through the window and just concentrated on making games as fast as they could, because “money”. The fact that multiple studios work on those games isn’t necessarily a problem, but losing sight of the entire storyline and lore was one of the biggest mistake; it was a big part of the soul of the series.

For me the problem with new games is this lack of goal. From AC1 to AC3 we knew EXACTLY why we were reliving all those memories. Why we did what we did. It was all to help Desmond, Lucy, Rebecca, Shaun and William to save the world before being turned into a giant fireball. This goal is what drove our actions. The stake was high and we wanted to see a happy ending. New games don't do this. There is a modern world but we spent so little time there and we have so little informations that we literally do not really know or do not care what Layla or Basim now want to achieve. We played as Bayek, then Alexios/Kassandra and Eivor and it felt like we finished the game achieving nothing. I don't even remember why Layla wanted the stuff of Hermes Trismegistos. Was it to save the world again? Or was it to just keep the templars from it because of reasons unknown. Ubisoft really should finally give us a proper, interesting and more complex modern world story because we play new games and do not have this sense that our actions have any purpose.

  • @DeviniteHD
    @DeviniteHD 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

One specific issue for Assassin's Creed also is that Ubisoft Quebec seems like they are the Rian Johnson of the AC franchise. So far, every time when they worked on an AC game it seemed like they actively wanted to subvert expectations. They could've chosen a setting more in line with Unity to build on the mechanics. But they actively chose Victorian London and therefore a setting which made it very hard to reuse Unity's systems. You can't build on a system made for sword fights if you have a setting without swords. You can't improve parkour if you choose a setting with wide streets. That was their choice.
Same thing with Odyssey: It was their choice to make a game set BEFORE the Origins of the brotherhood while Origins was already deep into development. They wanted to create an RPG that moves as far away from the AC identity as possible. I'm pretty sure if they had pitched an AC in Rome set after Origins Ubisoft wouldn't have said no. But they didn't.
An example where things went well is with Mirage. Ubisoft basically tasked Bordeaux with creating a "gap filler title" to bridge the time between Valhalla and Red. They could've done anything, but it was their decision to build on Valhallas lore with Basim as the protagonist and make the game as back to the roots as possible. And I highly respect them for that.
So far, I'm very sceptical when it comes to Quebec. The fact that Red is supposed to be a massive RPG bigger than Valhalla doesn't really excite me. And the fact that Montreal goes into a completely different direction than RPGs with Hexe shows that they are tired of the RPG formula as well. Quebec are the ones pushing it. It seems like the higher positions at Quebec always want to make something different than an actual Assassin's Creed game. You can feel it everywhere that Valhalla was a game where Ubisoft forced Montreal to make an RPG and they tried too hard to please everyone, so they ended up pleasing no one. I'm glad they aren't forced to make another RPG with Hexe and I'm actually pretty excited about that game.
Long story short: Less Quebec, more Bordeaux and hopefully Montreal will return back to it's old form. I mean they had a good track record before Valhalla with Revelations, Black Flag and Origins.

I think part of the problem may be the higher ups are forcing Quebec to make AC games. It seems to me they want to make other games, so they do something not in line with AC because, well, if they're forced to make AC games, they're gonna do it their way

Yeah, like even though there are installments I liked post AC3, I would say from Black Flag to whatever the the latest one is just doesn't have that strong connection to it's main protagonist and their history and the Lore of the family.
Like I literally do not know what the story for Assassin's Creed is right now.
We went from being a Game Designer, to a Drone that just watched people do stuff, to an archaeologist teaming up with Desmond's dad.
I probably missed a few, but my point still being that Desmond's story, (surprising for what it is) is simple.

The main reason of "inconsistency" is simple. This series is about CREED, not the assassins. Remember the Bible. A ton of stories about different characters, different times, different circumstances, different conclusions. Why do you think a series about any creed have to be "consistent" as a single story about single character? Looking at the series we can see some stories with some characters who are connected to the CREED. Those characters have different paths to go as it should be. But together they tell a story of Creed. And let it be so. It's a good way to tell a number of different stories.
P.S. Do you remember, how angry players were and how gameplay innovations were demanded? Players were tired with Ezio's "consistency", weren't they?

I honestly think it's that division in the preference of fans that are making each game worse in my opinion. The series should have ended long ago.

The problem is that mainly odussey and we can also say valhalla (even tough i think valhalla works as a spinoff) has nothing to do with the philosophy of the creed. And the main problem is the bad writing. Like even if you play differenc characters in the past they could make the rpg trilogy storiwise good. Consistent. But they didnt. I think variety in style is a good thing. Mirage would not exist if montreal made rpg sequels based of origins for years in a row. Saturation and stagnation would start to kick in. I think AC 3, Black flag and Rogue are beautifully connected to each other narrative wise and made some gameplay improvements but people got bored of that style. Fresh ideas and opinions from multiple studios are a good thing and there can be a game for everyone because people have different tastes in gameplay and narrative. not everyone likes the same protagonist for multiple games and people are happy to get a new jumping on point without having to play each installment in the series to understand mechanics or lore. They expanded Bayeks story with dlc, that should be enough. Next game means new world with fresh ideas and some references for the hardcore fans. Just like the Final Fantasy games. There’s multiple eras in this series, the beginning and golden age which is AC1-Revelations. Altair is obviously the goat but Ezio really carried 3 games on his back like a G. Then we have prime time age which is AC3-Rouge. Connor is just badass and the whole Kenway family was a very strong lead during this time. Haytham while I liked Connor better, Haytham was interesting to see in Rouge and even as a kid in black flag. Really all members of the family were all so cool and then rouge ties into the the next gen generation starting with Unity. Love how old gen Shay comes to next gen to kick it off by killing Arnos dad. Now this gen is short for me as I just consider it Unity and Syndicate because Origins starts off the whole new definition of what a AC game is. Origins is honestly a great start to the new style and Bayek is such a strong lead and his relationship with Aya is amazing. Forming the creed is so cool to see and I will never forget the first time I saw them pyramids. Odyssey honestly shouldn’t have been an AC game. I still haven’t finished it and I just don’t like the game. Only thing I give it is it’s beauty which is really amazing. Valhalla was honestly fun, I liked the idea of being a hardened Viking probably cause I love the show Vikings so much. The game did a great job at immersing you in the role but it’s a bit disappointing the Creed plot goes no further than just meeting Basim. I don’t like how they cooked up him being Loki, kinda ruins the whole “we took out the hand bow for realism” idea but whatever let’s see what they do. Now Mirage, it’s everything I’ve been wanting since Unity. I’m being totally honest, Mirage takes the correct steps and puts you in the role of being an Assassin almost in style to Unity and the older games. Overall, AC3 is my favorite. The father son Templar Assassin plot is top tier and I love both Haytham and Connor. Wish we get a sequel to Connor maybe in Europe meeting Arno but who knows

The big inconsistency with me is the whole genetic memory/Animus, algorithm. Once an offspring is produced any memories the parent has after that wouldn’t be something passed on, unless the offspring shares an experience that they can remember with their parent. They also change up the way in which memories have to be accessed. First it had to do with “confidence” then it had to do with just simply viewing the memories “in order while synchronizing” then they completely throw that out the window with Revelations & Rogue. Then there’s Lucy’s entire story. At first she was just some girl who went to college and had no combat experience. Otherwise the story she tells Desmond about how she owed Vidic her life for saving her was a complete lie. Because by the second game she’s all combat & in the later games her background story changes and apparently Desmond’s father trained her. So either she lied about those Abstergo guards taking advantage of her, or the game is inconsistent and retconned her background. Then there’s the Apple of Eden. They say that only those with the right Genetics can wield them. Yet in the first game, and in the Altair memories in Revelations, multiple people who lived during Altairs time, wield the Appple. So either they all had the right Genetics, or the lore lied about who can wield the Apple.

A lot of the changes were in direct response to the reception of previous games.
    - Brotherhood and Revelations are two of the least successful games in the series, so that's why we don't get sequels with the same character anymore. We do, however, usually get DLC that serves as a pseudo-sequel.
    - The modern-day story was the least popular thing about the series, so they deemphasized it after finishing that original Desmond arc.
    - The Desmond arc didn't end the series as originally planned because it was massively successful and they like money. With fans begging for so many other time periods, what, were they just gonna say no to that?
    - 4 was the most beloved and successful game since 2, and it was largely a standalone pirate adventure that was barely related to the Assassins and Templars, so that's why so many of the games since have been standalone historical genre stories. A Guy Ritchie London gangster story, an Egyptian epic, a Greek odyssey, a Viking invasion, and Red will almost certainly follow suit in its approach to the samurai and shinobi.
    - Unity, regardless of how much some AC fans try to rewrite history, was one of the biggest disasters in Ubisoft's history. It immediately destroyed the reputation of the series, and along with Watch Dogs, the company as a whole. I'm sure after this happened, priorities on Syndicate shifted to delivering something more polished and functional, so they rolled back some of the more ambitious stuff from Unity like the large crowds and the parkour.
    - After the disastrous release of Unity, the poor sales of Syndicate, and general criticism that the series was getting stale, they took a year off and then soft-rebooted with Origins.
    - After criticisms of the modern-day parts in 4 through Syndicate, the RPG trilogy introduced Layla.
    - Despite the massive financial success of the RPG games, criticism from classic fans led them to rework things in Valhalla to try to appeal to them (bringing back social stealth, adding an ability that makes stealth attacks instakill if you do a QTE along with an option to always instakill, making weapons and armor fixed spawns instead of loot, etc), and then they made an entire game for classic fans with Mirage.
And I imagine Red will do the same. It'll still be an RPG, because those games made a lot of money. But they'll probably rework stealth and combat to be less numbers focused. They'll probably rework parkour to bring back some of the depth. They'll probably have some denser, more vertical urban areas. They'll probably still have dialogue choices, but also bring back mocapped cutscenes.
I think it's good, actually, when long-running series are willing to listen to feedback and try new things, instead of just doing the same thing over and over again.

Every game after the colonial games felt like I was training my brain to remember controls. The fact doing a leap of faith in games like syndicate is different that other games or switching weapons in certain games is different than others makes it hard going between them at times, especially when you get to Origins where the entire combat system and inventory system works differently. The way social stealth works between games is a learning curve at times trying to remember what you can and can't do in specific games.

My solution would be to split the mainline games between "spinoff" and mainline versions even more. Kind of like how AC4 and Rouge was. That way Ubisoft can have games pumping out, and you have one team exculsively working on the mainline games, and one exclusevly on the branching game. Consistency and lots of games.

Leave Quebec and Sofia to the side games, as I don’t trust Quebec as they’ve made shitty games like Odyssey, and a downgraded Unity. For me if Ubisoft had a similar style to CoD then AC could be an incredibly strong and consistent franchise, the key is to just focus on one story/timeline for each studio
Infinity Ward made the modern warfare games while Treyarch made black ops, effectively giving 2 years between the release of each studio's respective games
If Ubisoft did something similar for example a trilogy set in the US from the founding to civil war to prohibition era made by Montreal, and an ancient trilogy made by Quebec going from Egypt to Rome to Greece
Even if the historical periods aren't linked the series has countless mcguffuns they could focus on, a piece of Eden goes from viking Britain to feudal Japan to the fall of the aztecs, these could all be made by one studio so it has a sense of connection and development whilst other studios develop their own miniseries within the larger franchise

To me, all the AC games (not yet played Valhalla though) are connected through their exploration of the Assassin vs Templar philosophy. Whether it be through story, gameplay, side quests, and whatever is in the game. AC1 and 2 laid out the basis of the Assassins' philosophy. AC 3, BF, Rogue, and Unity blurred the lines. Syndicate explored how the Assassins' actions (Jacob most of the time) can result in city-wide crises (thanks to Evie though for fixing them). Origins revealed the true purpose of the creed. Odyssey gave players choices that are either Assassin-sided or Templar-sided, showing that some choices are not all black-and-white. But I tend to do a lot of mental gymnastics when playing through AC so this may just be copium lol

I also never liked the modern day storyline, so not continuing that isn’t a negative to me, very immersion breaking. From 2:02 to 2:22, I feel like you can see Ubisoft grappling with this issue in all their longer-lasting franchises like Far Cry, Splinter Cell, Watch Dogs, and more. They're always trying to spice things up which is great but inadvertently messing with the game's DNA which isn't as great. For me, the biggest issue is that Ubisoft nails creating protagonists, especially in AC games, but they tend to switch between them too quickly. I'd prefer them to slow down, stick with a character for a couple of games, and fully develop their story. Sometimes, it feels like we're left hanging after a promising setup, especially with characters like Arno, Bayek, and Connor, leaving me with lingering tons of questions.

I believe the next step for Ubisoft to revitalize AC is to go back to the drawing board and travel in time to where it all began. They have use a new engine to build their new game from the ground up and make the game much more engaging to really connect players with the assassin while also doubling down on a more grounded tone. Think of The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima combat-wise on the highest difficulty.
Making combat way more difficult by implementing a more varied system that doesn't consist of parrying and solo-ing enemies individually, but putting the assassin more on a disadvantage so they shine more in what they're meant for, which is stealth and assassination. Direct combat should both be a challenge and a death wish.
About stealth and assassinations; we need more variety and options. Make everything more open yet challenging if you don't plan out your path ahead of time. I'd love it of Ubisoft took notes from HITMAN. Secondly on that idea, give the player more (consumable) items and use that they have to manage during every mission with a small loadout system just like HITMAN.
I believe AC can really shine with a revamp/reboot that takes the franchise to the next level where people won't roll their eyes when they see the latest installment. I want AC to feel fresh again by getting rid of the gameloops we've grown tired of. I want the game to feel like an uphill battle. Give me a challenge that is intense and engaging while also taking its time.
It feels satisfying to become OP through trials and tribulations and knowing how to play the game rather than metagaming with gear and skilltrees after hours of grinding which can easily be exchanged for a crazy high difficulty setting which you have the master to get right unless you want to face the consequences. Take notes from the "SoulsBorne" games: Skills over stats any day of the week. It's a matter of getting good rather than grinding.
The game should be slowed down way more, the parkour could even be more engaging and combat / assassinations could be even more methodical to a point it will feel satisfying when you pull off a stealth kill or make it out of a tight scenario when you've been spotted and surrounded. Give me something that will give me euphoria after surviving hell on earth by the skin of my teeth. That means the enemy NPCs have to not only be tougher, but way smarter as well.
I want my experience to feel like it is something worth fighting for. I want the game to be punishing so that I can learn from every mistake and I want to feel the consequences so that I can improve on what I thought I knew.
I want a true, grueling experience.

Really wish they would continue eoth the same character. Now obviously the games are longer now than in for the ezio games, but there is something about seeing a person grow that hasnt really been able to be captured since. Like most the time we just see them as they start their journey and yeah of course there is a ending but we dont get to see them grow overtime. Ezio going from a recruit to a master assassin is something that could only be portrayed as he got older and as the games progressed. And its not like they couldnt have continued their stories. They could even use a different protagonist if they want and they could interact with an older version of the previous assassin that would still be good as well. I mean even in ezios game you still saw altiar

@im2arrogant118 yeah because asking that they have sequels implied that every game ever should be tied together and that they could never make a new one in a different setting. And that part when I said there could be a new assassin but they still meet the old one (which by the way could be 40 years later) which in some time periods makes a drastic difference means that there is no creativity. Also just because they meet an old assasin means that that old assasin couldnt have mpved to a different part of the world (obviously). And isn't it interesting that altiar, ezio and Connor are all related but in obviously different time periods but that's somehow also creatively bankrupt I suppose guess because they are tied together.

Syndicate is Unity with 1 year extra development time, it's easy to say "they should've fixed Unity's systems instead of just butchering it" but not even Montreal managed to improve Unity's parkour systems later on in Origins or Valhalla. It's too inconsistent to be fixed due to how it's designed. Overreliance on camera position and animation priority over input priority is what makes Unity's parkour to feel bad. "Fixing" it would mean they would have to design a completely new system which they did for better or worse in Origins, Origins doesn't rely on camera positioning as much and it doesn't prioritize animations over inputs, press a button and it happens.

    Why AC feels inconsistent:
    1. The modern day sections and their importance to the story continuity were significantly reduced, unlike with AC1-4.
    2. Poor reception of Unity and Rogue, then Syndicate having bad sales figures because of low interest in that particular game or 2014 ruining Ubisoft’s good AC streak. Then the RPG series begun in 2017, which may have been divisive for some fans. It took until 2023 for a original style AC game to come out.
    3. RPG ACs are generally well received critically but the fans aren’t that fond of them, especially with Odyssey.

Personally, I'm fine with the games doing their own thing. If every game just followed the same basic formula as every game that came before it, then it would feel really cookie cutter and formulaic. I like variation and experimentation. Without experiments, you can't find anything new or try something different. Whether or not new thing works is really up to personal preference.

Well, if the studio's would just talk to each other, then there wouldn't be such a mess.

They should make one game about present day that connects the stories of the other games

I believe Ubisoft is realizing this lack of vision for their recent games and are turning it around (fingers crossed). They're bringing back multiplayer which is sorely missed, and hopefully they will focus on good story telling and motion capture cause I think I will lose my mind if I see a next gen game not have motion capture. 😂 Here's to better games in 2024! Cheers 🥂

I'd argue the modern games have consistency in story with the layla plot playing a consistent gameplay style and modern story continually going forward. Even with mirage switch up in gameplay, it's clear, it was only a side thing with how the series is continuing.
And gameplay wise, it's clear Odyssey takes inspiration from origins and Valhalla from Odyssey. The skills alone show this

Ubisoft wants to be Witcher so bad without understanding what makes Witcher, Witcher. AC Origins shows this a lot: "Oh medjay please do this! Please do that!" And they cater to so many different fan bases, i.e., RPG fans and classic fans

1:44 tbh, I don't think that it's a bad thing that the games work as stend alones. For new players that just want to play the recent games, it would be tedious to have to catch up with 16 years of storyline. Like you start the game, but the story has started like 17 games ago. Not everyone wants or has the time to immerse himself in the lore of the previous games. Being stand alones make the game accessible and more enjoyable to a majority of people, which is what I thing Ubisoft wants. If you spend millions on a game, you want it to reach the largest audience possible
