Why The Assassin's Creed Movie FAILED...

  • Assassin's Creed's one and only live-action movie debuted in 2016 and was met with some negative feedback to say the least. I decided to rewatch the Assassin's Creed Movie in 2023 and look back on why the film failed and what it could have done better. And even though this film was a failure in terms of ratings and box office performance, I believe it truly wasn't all that bad...

    I think I'd have ditched the modern day entirely. Set it up like the books and tell a fully fleshed story in a historical setting, let audiences get attached to Aguilar and the ancestor memories, then (and it could even be a post credits scene) have Cal wake up in the Animus at the end to set up a sequel.

    • @TehxDraGz
      @TehxDraGz 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      Exactly what I was thinking, but only issue I can probably see is that in the games, the subject using the animus can’t stay in it for too long or they will suffer the bleeding effect(if it’s just slightly too long) or even have their minds split(if it’s way too long). So going through an entire life sequence of Aguilar would have killed Cal essentially 😂. Please correct me if I’m wrong though, just what I thought about

      @@TehxDraGz I agree, but I think you could perhaps circumnavigate that in two ways. Either Aguilar takes periodic 'rests' during the movie's runtime leading to a dream-like or nightmare sequence of things happening in the modern day, or you do it the way AC1 did with about five minutes of disorientation at the beginning, a modern day section at the beginning then spend time dipping in and out of the Animus. Newer models allow subjects to spend longer times in there, just have the Animus be less invasive like Helix or something.

      That's why clever film makers build a point the protagonist must pass, and then follow it with a worthy montage along with some narration to move he story past those long game parts.

    I think Assassin's Creed has too many layers for a two hour movie: historical plot, modern day plot, Templars, Assassins, Abstergo, etc. The books basically stick fully to the historical setting, which I think would've been the way to go for the movie. A television series would give them a better opportunity to dive into all aspects of an Assassin's Creed storyline, so hopefully the Netflix one comes to fruition.
    I did think it was cool how they tied this movie to AC Origins with the Aguilar skin, and revealing that Layla helped design the Animus from the movie. Also, Cal is Arno's descendant which, as an Arno fan, I like the implication of.

    • @alexandrem798
      @alexandrem798 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Exactly. People underestimate the hardships of making a satisfactory AC movie, considering everything it has to achieve within a 2~2.5 hour runtime: introducing a main character from the present day timeline, introducing a main character from the past, introducing the millenia long Assassins/Templars conflict, introducing the Animus technology, introducing the Pieces of Eden, all the while telling character arcs for both the present day MC and history MC that stand on their own.
      Considering all this, I think Justin Kurzel's film is okay. Not great but not terrible either. I especially like the soundtrack which elevates a lot of scenes. Ultimately what was really proven is that a movie is not a suitable format for Assassin's Creed.

    Really goes to show just how important writing is for a movie. This movie has some amazing visuals, a stacked cast of actors all trying their best, some cool action scenes and an amazing premise. However the writing and character building is so pisspoor it just fails for both ac fans and regular movie goers, which is a shame because as I said: the premise of ac is badass. Even to haters of the franchise. I remember when it was announced everyone was preaching how this was the movie that would break the videogame-movie adaptation curse and to quote Obi-Wan: it ultimately became the very thing it swore to destroy.

    The main reason it didn't resonate with fans was because of the History bit.
    Like you said, many of us play these games to immerse ourselves in historical places as an assassin. The modern day plot is usually like a subplot where most people never even log out of the animus unless the game needs you to.
    The movie gave the most appealing thing ,The past, the least amount of screen time and gave the "subplot" the most screentime.

  • @connorwiederich
    @connorwiederich 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +71

    The biggest issue I had with the movie was how rushed it felt in the second half. Cal joining the assassins felt forced, the rebellion at Abstergo happens with an assassin dying and the moment is treated like a big deal but we didn't really know the guy that much, and I felt the Templars found the Apple of Eden too quickly while in the video games it took them longer. Either the movie needed a longer runtime or be split into two movies. I also agree there wasn't much focus on the Animus as there should have been.
    I did enjoy seeing Cal going through the bleeding effect and the setting and action scenes were great, besides being fast paced. Also Sophia being hinted at being an assassin was a neat reveal and would have been interesting to see play out. Lastly, now learning the actor that played Mad Eye Moody was in this movie is cool to hear about.

    As an AC fan since day 1, I enjoyed the movie. Although it’s impossible to cover the AC world well in just a movie, I saw the movie as more of a “single mission”. It has some back story, dialogue, a main target to assassinate, objectives and then other things or people to deal with.

    I do hope they try again with a cinematic AC adaptation, as AC games *almost* always have the most beautiful stories and worlds. Maybe they could use the "bleeding effect" to make scenes that tie in with both the past and present. Showing a small cut to the present setting up a timeline allowing the viewer to infer what's in-between each cut. Allowing a present day story whist focusing on the (much more wanted) past.

We could knit pick ANY film to death if we truly wanted, and I've seen a lot of people even bitch about the effects in this one. How? It's visually stunning. And this film is absolutely mind blowing when you learn basically all these fights and stunts are REAL. There was like one CGI stunt in the entire film and it's not the real leap of faith. Everything else is real, even the slack line stunt that lasted all of 3 seconds on screen. It's just incredible what they pulled off in this film and no one really appreciates it.

    I think the main fault of this film, besides the “childish” rating, is the fact that in a film based on the Assassin's Creed franchise, the action doesn't take place long enough in the past. My personal opinion is that they should have made a film where the action took place entirely in the past, then ended the film with Michael Fassbender's character abruptly waking up in the present, discovering that he is inside the Animus and not in a dream.

    I super loved this movie, I saw it in the theatre and when he fully connects with the animus I found myself in tears. Having watched it with people who did not know the lore, I could tell that the modern day part of the story was necessary for them to understand the time travel of it. And from the end of the movie, it is clear that they wanted to make more. I think they went heavy on modern day to draw in more people who do not know yet the franchise - which is the case with most adaptations. But it was interesting to listen to this video, I enjoy a good discussion, I also don't think it helps to hate on it in any way, there billions of far worse adaptations out there.

    I’m admittedly torn on the rating aspect. I guess it’d come down to how they use the higher rating. Like, is it used to have brutality just for the sake of it? Is there a purpose to that violence being on screen? Etc.
    A thought I did just have in terms of modern/historical balancing, whether a show or movie, is kinda like the comics or how the TTRpG presents it? Person on the street gets rescued by the Assassins (instead of taken by Templars) due to their ancestry, use the past, and have them actually use the modern day to have some action as well so it’s not just exposition. Weave in moments of an Assassin Cell like Desmond’s missions in AC3. Almost like a reverse of The Matrix?

    As someone that discovered the Assassin's Creed franchise when I was 9-10 years old (I'm 19 now) with the first contact with the franchise being Unity I agree 100% with you the movie wasn't horrible but it wasn't definitely a masterpiece it was acceptable but they surely wasted a lot of potential focusing mostly on the modern day because as you said what most of us fans love about Assassin's Creed is the ancestors story seeing the memories of those past events and they could have found a way to explain a lot of important things about the lore to the people that don't know the franchise without relying 100% percent on Callum asking things to other people in the present.
    Basically the conclusion I get is that what made the movie fail was not just the fact it was released at a time were people were very sceptical when movie adaptations of video games were released because most of them are horrible but also the fact that it looks like they didn't plan things correctly and wasted good characters and potential but personally I didn't hate the movie I actually liked it.

    I feel like it would’ve done a lot better if they saved some of the modern day story like Cal assassinating Rikkin for a sequel so Aguilar gets more focus and you can feel the scope of the Templars that is present when there are more targets in the games. It might have even done better to have the historical characters speak English so the audience can understand better without looking at the subtitles, and that could be written off as Abstergo translating the actual words for Cal. But at the end of the day, a sequel could be awesome with Aguilar hunting down Torquemada while Sofia tries to take revenge against Cal. I few like an Unity sequel could tie into this movie as well, as Arno is Cal’s ancestor, and maybe the anonymous initiate could be given a full character and meet Cal.

If you’re an AC veteran then stuff like completely changing how the Animus works felt jarring, and all the little easter eggs couldn’t make up for that. If you were a new viewer then you didn’t care about the changes, but you always felt like you were missing context only found in the games. In the end everyone just ends up more frustrated than entertained. They needed to more firmly fall on one side or the other, either make a love letter to the big fans or make something for everyone, they tried to split the difference and it just didn’t work out very well.

    I think the AC movie sort of reveals the inherent issues with AC as a franchise-it’s story is consistently the weakest aspect of the franchise. The modern day element is awful, the bland “templars VS assassins” story isn’t nearly as cool as it thinks it is and the whole animus concept is awful in the games already (why am I playing a game about a guy in a simulation? Just put the game IN the time period)
    Assassins creed’s strength is its interactive simulations of real world time periods. Being able to walk around renaissance-era Italy or the golden age of piracy.
    Nobody outside of AC fans cares about anything other than the gameplay fantasy of the time periods in each game…. So making a movie is an awful idea conceptually since it removes the only truly great part of the series-the interactivity. You’re stuck with the dull melodrama of the Templars and Assassins, the dumb animus idea, the eyerollingly boring apple of Eden stuff, etc
    It’s sort of like the Halo TV show which put way too much focus on aspects of the IP that are sorta the weakest part of Halo (spartans being sad/emotional)

    Tbh I really loved the film it was definitely an Assassin's Creed movie it depicted the game pretty well in comparison to all other video game adaptations and this movie has got to be the best one imo. It was no means a perfect ac movie but it did an amazing job cramming the lore of ac in a 90 minute runtime which also explains the sacrifices the movie took due to a very small runtime but it did a pretty good job especially with the modern sequences they established great world building in the film and it was supposed to be fleshed out by a sequel i do agree with some disappointed with the film for focusing too much on the present day but i think it was necessary for the movie and to this day i still watch this film and think about the what could've beens if this movie franchise went on but i'm glad everything in the film was canon plus maybe we can still see callum's story continue with the netflix acquisition.

    Like some others have said, AC simply has too big of a plot to reasonably make into a movie. Have to deal with multiple assassination targets including each individual build up and a Grandmaster to top it off. A past storyline that's also able to tell a good character rich story. A modern day plot that literally introduces a whole new element and stuff regarding pieces of eden and the Isu. It just doesn't work as a movie.

But i agree, i think the power of de games is the fact that you're the one exploring. I love the fact that i'm the one discovering tombs, i'm the one meeting historical figures, that i'm the one running in historical sites. That's the whole thing. I even think Ubisoft knows it, they had the whole "History is your playground" campaign. That's the whole working concept behind the franchise, what makes the brand so powerfull.

    The main problem to game adaptations is the heavy lore... how to condense so much lore in 2h or so... even the games develop the lore as they release the sequels... but when it gets to a point where they see a movie would be profitable... there are like 3 or 4 games with 50 hours of content, each... and they try to cram it all in the first movie... often killing the chances of a sequel

  • @gantashiro978

    My biggest issue with it was it felt like it was trying way too hard to try and have it make sense to people who know nothing about the games while not explaining parts of it that are key aspects of assassin's creed that only fans who played the game would immediately underatand. It tried to have it both ways and it kinda failed. They should have either made the story to tailor it only for viewers who know 0 about assassin's creed... Or make it focused solely on those who know about Assassin's Creed to make the ideal story they'd love to see in a movie...

    The parkour, fight choreography, and costumes were this movie’s biggest shining moments. All they needed was a solid direction, and writers that knew what Assassins Creed was, and meant to its audience.
    Had they taken time to flesh out the story, and work it into the lore better, it would have been much more popular… but they decided to take dozens of liberties, and introduced an over the top new form of animus that’s never been touched upon again, because even the teams behind the games thought it was lame.
    The movie just felt soulless and corporate, made strictly for marketing the name, and not for telling a new interesting story. It’s a shame, there was so much potential… maybe the upcoming Netflix Assassins Creed series will do better… if it’s even still alive after the actor/writer strikes. Even still, modern Netflix and Ubisoft don’t exactly have my complete faith in their ability to make something everyone can enjoy… so I’m not going to hold my breath for their (supposedly) upcoming AC series either.

    From what I understood, they were planning to make a trilogy hence the multiple unexplained components. Disney bought 21st Century Fox and sacked the plans because of the "negative" reception. I's watched it 3 times and I am pissed that the plan was canceled. I play the games too. I agree that it was ridiculous that it had a disgustingly low rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Most of the times Rotten Tomatoes rate good or acceptable movies badly but the audience gives the movies high ratings. The AC movie is just a standalone movie now. I hope someone gives it a chance for the plans to be revived.

    I think this would be better with a 2 movie setup. It’s just to much to cram in to one movie. The whole concept about the assassins and Templars, how the animus works, the past with Augilar and the present. It was pretty much setup to fail with only 1 movie. Another way to do it would be to just focus on the past in this movie and just hint about the present in the end of the movie and then if movie nr 2 was green-lit have that movie be more in the present.

    I'd give it a 6.5/10, and its official novelization an 8/10. The movie does well with the cast, the soundtrack, the cinematography, and the stunts. But the book excels in Narrative, with extended (and better) written scenes, not to mention additional context to the other Assassins and their ancestors. I agree with you though, it does not deserve the hate, and could've done well with a better sequel. However, since the hate and the untimely 20 Century Fox acquisition by Disney, the original plans for a trilogy seem less hopeful. I'd still take one though. Since much was already bought up in this one, the foundation is already set for a sequel to take its own time focusing elsewhere.

  • @GarcoIni
    @GarcoIni 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Honestly, I actually think the novelization to the movie is way better than the movie itself. It's better structured and narrated, the characters are more rounded up, we even found out more about the other modern assassins imprisoned with Cal and it makes you like them more. I think this movie could've worked better as a book and it actually did.
    PS: Favourite things about the novelization; backstories of the secondary characters
    Sofia: Her mother was killed by an assassin and her father was often cold toward her, she also has an interest for Cal at the end, not romantic but because they appear to share an assassin ancestor.
    Moussa: A descendant of Baptiste and a former street thief who is the leader of the group in the prison Cal's in. The movie doesn't give him much of a personality but in the book he is given a clever trickster personality and a know-how on slight of hand and how to make poisons thanks to his ancestor.
    Nathan: My favourite character in the book just for his backstory and it explains a lot of why he acts so rude towards Cal in the movie. He is a descendant of Duncan Walpole (the assassin turncoat Edward killed at the beginning of Black Flag) who used to be a drug dealer in London but now lives terrified that the bleeding effect will make him loose his mind to that of his ancestor, a man he does not want to become, a man without honor. So when he sees Cal voluntarily helping the templars, it explains why he lashes out the way he does.
    Also more interesting are Emir and Lin (descendants of Yusuf Tazim and Shao Jun respectevily), but they don't really tap as much into their personalities as the movie.
    The other things I liked were a little reference to Arno Dorian (protagonist of Unity) that confirms he is another ancestor of Callum, which i just thought is a cool little nod to the franchise in general and the final section of the book called "regressions"; memories of Baptiste, Duncan, Yusuf and Shao Jun that I think were all really well written (the first three a little more so).

    I think the biggest flaw for this movie is that they're trying to explain everything. I don't blame em for trying to get as many people interested as possible, but no matter what, every single fan was going to be there. They're taking something that already has an audience, and trying to make another audience, which is just a silly move and a recipe to lose the support they were already going to have.
