This was super useful, thank you! I've had some recent great corporate gigs and was looking for strategies for getting more of them since my band fulfills so many of the requirements you mention.
I can see a lot of shady greedy situations.... So a family offers $5,000 for a band for a wedding to an Agent ..... He can say to the band would you do it for $1,000 - %20? The band plays for $800, and the Agent gets $4,000 + %20 of the $1,000. I can see multiple screw overs from a so called "Agent" etc.... That's why many bands are finding ways to manage or promote themselves.
A lot of the "Agent" to client money exchanges are unknown to the actual musicians doing the work. Just those words of caution...... There are many people who do little to nothing, and profit from others skills or talents.
I think most agents, of any real quality, do a good job and are considerate to the Act, they realise their entire livelihood depends on it. They have bills and expenses and wages to provide etc. Most agent gigs are worth more than a direct gig to the venue. There are good and bad in every profession, I think Douglas is in the 'good zone'. You need to determine who's a good or bad agent and work with them, life isn't perfect. Remember there are also some bands who don't deserve the money they get?! Band leaders who take a bigger cut than the remainder of the band etc etc. This video is helpful and gives credence to our job as a musician, he gives great advice.
