Funny thing about submissions to labels, is that I had a friend who used to work as an intern at Capitol Records and he'd said that part of his job was to go into the room where all the mailed/couriered submissions were and just stamp "Return to sender" on all of them and send them back. Apparently nobody at Capitol had any interest whatsoever in even seeing what was in the submission packages. Another funny story, is that he was supposedly speaking with the guy who works there and whose job it was to distribute the royalty checks and he was expressing how weird it is that someone like (I can't remember who he said it was, but I do recall it was someone like) Enrique Iglesias would only get like $20,000 quarterly, though someone like XYZ (Not even going to try to remember, as I'd never heard of them before, nor since) is getting like a steady $200,000 every quarter, if not more. The lesson behind that, I suppose, is to decide if one would rather have fame, or money, as it seems they rarely come as a packaged deal, even in the already rarified atmosphere of having either.
There could be many potential problems haha! But from my experience it's creative differences between the artist and the label. Most artists don't want to give up control over there art. But labels often times need control in order to sell albums. It's a catch 22.
Hi Reno, It really depends on the level of the band. Marketing budgets I'd say can be anywhere from 10,000-100,000 for new bands who are signed on with a label. It really depends on how big the label is and if the album is just being promoted as a digital release or in stores. -Stephanie
Hi, great video. Thank you for sharing. I have a question. Should an artist ever pay an independent person, not directly employed by a record label (but who has contacts) for "career consultations"??
Why should an artist sign under 2 labels if they are already under the main major label. How do the percentages between those two labels and the artist work ?
This is a great help, what a description and clever process of how the music label is described. I have subscribed to you as I think it will really help me as I want to start a business and will be a dream if i made my own music label. Thank you for sharing. ✌
hi youre awesome! I have a question though... if there were a heirarchy or progression in an artists career what would be the steps in establishment or prominence?
Hi, I watched all 5 parts of your 101 bootcamp - thanks for making them. I have a question: I'm a web designer, interested in making websites for bands ... What department/area is usually in charge of an artists' website? Creative Services? Or something else such as publicists? Thanks again!
i absolutely love this video it helped me out so much... i was wondering if u could talk about the start up cost of running your own label and creating funding from scratch???? with local arist that u believe in
WOW thanx for that clear explication with diagrams and stuff... i have watched a bunch of idiots here on TH-cam claiming he knows a thing about Record Labels but they have no idea!
hey hope you can reply to this comment so long after your video, but what i want to know is what royalties do record labels collect when your song is streamed and played at places that pay royalties
+Timeless Exclusive Records - Depends on many things. Contracts(read fine print), this is where you need an entertainment attorney that works for you and not the record label. Labels generally get the publishing rights from most new artist or not, if the artist is say one in one hundred million with the "it" factor for being the next big thing w/ staying power... Start grass roots DIY w/ a small indie label to start, write, produce and perform as many gigs as possible put the recording out there sell it at shows, stream it as much as you can get word of mouth going, do interviews in every city on your tour get that buzz on!!! When your ready for the Majors get an attorney(an honest one if that's possible) keep your publishing rights for your music that means mo money for your pocket. Peace good luck.
thanks so much! These videos have been very helpful! Do you have any videos on fundraising planning? We want to get a tour guide but in order to hire one, we have to invest a lot of money and be able to pay them continuously. We'd love to have some pointers from you! Thanks-- Lexi & MINO
I am starting off as a manger for WePush Management, through Red. I am also a publisher and an artist. What information can you give me for starting off?
hey i really like your video. it s clear that you know the topic. i'll like to know how to promote myself successfully as an independent artist? How do i get my songs played at radios?
Hello! Thanks for the informative video and I do hope you answer my query. Do you need a music degree to intern at a record label or can you still intern with a non-music degree, like law or business?
Hi there, do you also offer courses or private lessons regarding music marketing? I'd like to start as a freelancer as it seems to be the fastest way to earn money right off the bat to get clients instead of slow building the fan base which sadly can't afford on that now. Best regards, Paul
I have two songs unique in the same way as the Country hit, "Grandma got hit by a reindeer". What it the best way to promote them. Just do a TH-cam video as did Walk off the Earth with RedHands?
- question: why are the major labels not making it more clear to their future artists, which sub-labels to send to? - like why is it more or less "a confusing jungle" difficult approach they seem to make? - hope I make sense here... :D AND: thx for sharing your video's!
Hi, thank you so much for this video it's been super helpful! I understand that the parent companies are the music groups, and that they contain record labels that also contain record labels. I was wondering what the difference is between Hybrid Label Ventures, Imprints, Subdivisions of Labels and essentially what different type of relationships are possible branching from a parent company or a record label? Hope that makes sense and thanks in advance for the help!
My group has a multiple page A&R contact list in the files section for our members to enjoy! We also have positive people that are working together to fund concerts/meet and greets with major artists in order to network and even open up, so join us! facebook.com/groups/theindieadvantage
ThankYou. I Love Nashville. Went there on purpose in 2014 because of The Recording Studios (Studio Row) where I stayed in a Hotel exactly just between there & downtown. I Love main Street. we also took the Tour thru The Grand Ole Opry. We're considering returning there this Year for NAMM. I have a video on my youtube channel on how to start a record label. Cheers
I have a question, What label would you approach if you were me, My name is Ally May Grabel I am a Pro-skateboarder that plays the guitar at the same time which I believe I am the only one in the world that does that. Also I have a Christmas CD for kids that I made were I sing. I donate 10% of the money to Toys for Tots who would you approach? th-cam.com/video/RVVKgqsl3B0/w-d-xo.html
You are doing a good job explaining about the music business.

Thanks for the great info and content. What are some examples of how a label push or get behind a record?
EMI was cut between others. Iron Maiden catalogue under control of Warner although their albums and singles were released by EMI Records before.
Why should an artist sign under 2 labels if they are already under the main major label. How do the percentages between those two labels and the artist work ?

+Scott Parkers Awesomeness Yes, mainly with independent Record labels.
+BLACKLIGHT RECORDS sub me back
uhm u r saying that major record companies wont accept demo from those recorded at home but ssmaller, independent ones will?
WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH 1800 SONGS? MUSIC CAN BE A BLESSING OR A CURSE .. MUSIC CAN MAKE YOU INSANE ..
isn' an and r rep just basically a talent agent and
is it possible to just be an a and r rep without having the rest of the record label
No they work with you when recording your album and listen to it and help present it to the label.
I don't understand why would an artist be signed to more than one label
An example is eminem, eminem has shady records, which is through dr dre's aftermath records, which is through interscope
Can i email you?
so, the first thing is to get a name and copyright it?
