Scotty, my late Father in Law was an excellent "old school" professional mechanic for 50 years after finally retiring in the 1990s. He started his mechanic career as a Studebaker dealership mechanic. In the early years he owned Studebaker Hawks & Studebaker pickup trucks. After Studebaker went out of business he worked for two auto repair shops for over 20 years each. Just like your Grandpa, he loved Buicks and his favorite Buick was the 1966 Skylark with the V6. He never bought a new car from a dealer in his life but instead waited for a late model Buick come into his shop with a blown engine or transmission where the owner decided to buy a new car instead of the high cost of an engine or transmission rebuild and he would make a reasonable offer for the car and then rebuild the engine or transmission himself if possible. Otherwise he would buy a rebuilt engine or transmission and install himself. Of course this saved his Family tens of thousands of dollars over the decades which he invested in Chevron stock! Smart!

I think sometimes it's not that mechanics are trying to rip you off. Some are crooks, but some just have limited experience or weren't trained well. We had a Sentra. Bought new. A couple of years in the car would stall out at stop lights, stop signs, basically whenever we would come to a stop, but not everytime. It was a head scratcher. Then the problem evolved into intermittent loss of acceleration. Again, unpredictable. Took it to Nissan. They had it for a week. Couldn't figure it out. I researched it using Chilton books and came to the conclusion it was a vacuum problem, but couldn't pinpoint it. My wife's Dad insisted he take it to his mechanic. He determined it needed a new transmission.
After I did all the common sense things like checking for vacuuming leaks and changing the fuel filter, the problem didn't get any better, until I started the car and put a screwdriver down the carb to open the throttle plate and the engine roared to life.
The Dad was pissed off with me because I didn't agree with his mechanic's diagnosis. The transmission is controlled by vacuum but so was the carb. Eventually we got the car towed to a mechanic MILES away who had it for a week. It WAS a vacuum problem. Three relays positioned between the inner and outer fender on the passenger side went bad and affected the distribution of vacuum. The relays were replaced. No more problems!! But it was a bad spot for those things to be. They were subject to the elements. Bad engineering.
This shop specialized in foreign cars in the days before computers. Took awhile, but the problem was solved.
Intermittent problems are the worst and you need a good diagnostician with experience to get to the root of the problem. As for the dealership, or auto centers, they work on a volume basis to make money. If your problem can't be quickly solved it's tough luck for the customer. A small time, local guy, or gal, with a good reputation is your best bet for good service. But in the end, it's a crap shoot. No one knows EVERYTHING. That is, except for SCOTTY! 😄👍🙏

Service history records are great to have, but they do not always tell the whole story. You need base most of your vehicle inspection on how it drives, handles, wear and tear of use, listen for knocks all through the rev range. Look for sign of overheating, excess water jacket pressure, coolant colour, must be pink or blue these days. Check for corrosion underneath, chassis and brake lines. Check for excessive smoke, blue or white smoke from a hot engine is a fail. Check for sloppy gear changes, grinding etc. Check for engine oil, coolant, or power steering, differential, transfer case, gearboxLeaks. The mileage may be low, but the vehicle itself may have had a hard life. Just a few pointers there. Have fun.

I had a 2018 f150 and that thing was just bad. Five times the transmission had to be "reprogrammed" because when I would get out on the road it wouldn’t move. Press the accelerator as much as you want you ain’t moving. I don’t have that problem with my 2021 Tundra.

Nissan lifetime warranty... Been there with a used chevy I bought from a ford dealer advertising lifetime powertrain warranties on all used cars with under 100k miles. You have to take your vehicle to "qualified" mechanics for all the service, and/or phone into the warranty call center after every service to document mileage, service, product types, etc. P-I-T-A!! I change my own oil, etc. so the lifetime warranty was worthless. I feel it is basically a used car dealer gimmick. There are tons of ways for them to weasel out of funding the warranty.

I leave it on, doesn't seem to help or hurt anything, but I do wonder if it retains too much heat? I have no idea. Vehicles didn't have them forever then all of a sudden automakers started putting them on.

    1. Don't ever trust warranties from any company other than the manufacturer themselves. I don't know about that dealership but 3rd party warranty companies that you buy your used car from will fight you on getting your car fixed.
    2. I live in the PNW and it only snows a few times a year but I love having AWD so far despite the extras gas. Just bought a Lexus RC 350. Love having a sport coupe, that is a toyota, and has AWD. Not an easy combo to find.

Ford's use a transmission that has adaptive learning. It is ok if there is only one driver, but if there are multiple drivers, the transmission is setting itself for a heavy foot, and grandma gets in...it shifts hard and jerky. If it is grandpa's truck and grandson gets in and gets on it, the shift bands are looser and the trans will have slippage. Everyone who has a new Ford be aware.

too many options are not good. I love my old Pontiac GranPrix.. it always knows what gear to be in. 2008 3.8 L. great milage, peppy and dependable. What was wrong with keeping that? The engines don't go bad.. the transmissions just can't keep up with the torque available. Knowing that, I don't push my transmission.. and she shifts like butter. She keeps a constant rpm at any gear. GM really screwed up when they abandoned Pontiac. They lost a lot of talent.

My wife just bought a 21 Mazda CX-5 which came with a lifetime powertrain warranty from the dealership on top of a one-year bumper-to-bumper. I was quite impressed with that. Gives me a some peace of mind. A normally hate buying cars and don't trust anyone but that dealership really impressed me all around. Not to mention the $5k in service they did prior to the purchase (brand new tires, alignment, f & r brakes/rotors, new battery, filters, oil and fluids, computer update and they even had a couple very tiny dents removed from the hood). I was shocked!

Car rides Like a dream but I'm not sold on the reliability, hence the lease. Dealer didn't offer lifetime power train warranty. Might have swayed me to buy it. It kinda crappy the last years Buick made cars they’re quality sunk.
My grandparents each leased a 2020 Buick lacrosse. My grandfathers lacross had so many recalls it spent more time in the shop then the road.
My grandma lacrosse didn’t have any issues until a year later at 6k miles the transmission went out without warning no slips or warning.
They got out of the leases and bought with cash a $47k dollar Buick Lucerne CXL car was a nice red with Crome trim.
Fully loaded heated and cooled steering wheel/seats
Ect…it was the last car they owned outright til they died 8 and 10 months later…both passed few months from each other.
When my aunts uncle and dad brought it back to Buick to see if they’d buy it back. They were only offered 14k dollars.
Of course they said no and thought it was a rip off..
For a car with only 5k miles on it. But after doing research the value was only 18k a huge drop from 47k cash purchase a year and 4 months prior.
    They don’t hold their value

I’ll stick with my 4T-60E 4 speed automatic on the 94 Ciera, with the 3.1 liter V6. Frequent oil and filter and transmission fluid and filter changes have it all still running great at 29 years and 2 months of age. Easy to work on, parts readily available. People gave up on these classic beauties because of a faulty wiring harness that cost $25 from GM Mexico ( $40 shipping ).

Scotty, one thing I learned recently about Ford trucks was the engineered "Adaptive Learning Transmission": TCM in Fords. It's been around for a while, and has caused much frustration with Ford truck owners; especially not the original owners (because the TCM learns from the original owner).
I have a 2008, so I do not have one of these debacles.
Some who own the newer trucks should search for this and understand how this may impact them.

Ford 10 speed transmission even after a reprogram still shifts hard, skips, and hunts. This also has a sealed system. So no owner dipstick, not unless you warm transmission to 200 degrees, climb under truck with it running, get an 18mm wrench, and take the plug off and read some 4 inch stick. Oh it is next to the 500 plus degree catalytic converter. If you have a lift it maybe 20% easier. I think it wants it checked every 10k just to get you to the dealer.

Hey guys question so how high should you generally accelerate RPMs from 0-60. I try to accelerate keeping the RPMs under 3000 at least to preserve the transmission. He accelerated straight to 6000 in that Buick. Is that something you should only do occasionally or shouldn’t hurt the transmission long term?

    • @darklordsauron3415
      @darklordsauron3415 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

He did it to test the car. You don’t accelerate at 6000 every time you leave a light unless you want to pay big bucks early. The longevity will depend not only on the type(manual, automatic, CVT, Dual clutch), but how well it’s build. Generally you should only step on the gas when merging with highways, thats consistent with the typical wear and mileage that most vehicles. Never step on the accelerator hard with a manual when in high gear/very low rpm.

Scotty is always on point. I would never buy a piece of garbage from Ford ever. They deserve to go out of business. Who sells the vehicle and then tells you to live with a glitch in the transmission because they don't even know how to fix it themselves? What a joke and embarrassment of an American car company. I'll stick with my 99 Z28 my '02 Trans Am. Tried and true American muscle. You don't buy a pickup truck for performance. Maybe if Ford focused on smooth transmission shifts instead of performance in a pickup truck the transmission might work a little better. But then again Ford's never got anything right. All their vehicles have always been garbage and they always will be. They don't know what they're doing over there and Scotty just proved it. Basically he said live with the glitch because no one can figure out what's wrong with it. So you just got to deal with it for 75 thousand dollars.
