My parents weren't perfect but after seeing some of these cases I'm super grateful they weren't insane maniacs. (thanks mum and dad)
When we hear about teens killing their parents, we just have to look at the parents. Were they parents or were they their child’s friend?
Often times these parent/friends try to discipline the kid when it’s too late. You lay down the law when they’re two years old. By the time they’re teenagers, they’ll have enough love and respect that they would never harm their parents even if they’re butting heads.
@@mildredpierce4506 not true all teenager hate their parents for a time without reason sometime with reason. But most would not kill someone when all they had to do was wait a year or two to move out!

Not sure if he should be in prison, or in a hospital for the mentally ill, even if for life.
My feeling is that the schools are partly at fault in situations like this because they promote an illusion and desire for autonomy on the part of teens that should not exist. They are still minors and require care and guidance by parents.

In cases like this, I always think about how it will hit the child one day that they don’t have their mother. No mom to call on for the comfort, support and love that only a mother can give. I think of stories of dying men on the battlefield calling out for their mothers, of adults suffering a tragedy and wanting their mothers. It seems the sense of aloneness in the world would be devastating, even more so with the knowledge they’re the ones responsible for not having a mother to respond.
This is something I think about too. I lost my mum and dad when I was younger and it’s awful having to go through life without their love, support and comfort. It devastated me when I realised I was an orphan when I had just become an adult.
I’ve transitioned from suicidal drug addict to sobriety and just recently, I qualified as a therapist. I was the only student who had no family to be there to pat me on the back as we all graduated. It was upsetting.
And yesterday I had a tough day with clients and had a wee cry after my last session. I remember the feeling of being alone and really craving a hug from my mum.
@@MrBungle900 I can’t imagine how painful it was when you lost them, and at that milestone in your life. That’s when I really called on mine for guidance, assistance, emotional support, etc. to help me navigate the new world of adulthood. Major props to you for pulling yourself back up on healthy and productive track.
There are creatures that literally do not care at all, they have no empathy, they have no guilt, they have no heart and they stay that way their whole lives.

I'm getting tired of people justifying horrible acts because so and so didn't have the best childhood.There are no justifications for this murder. They weren't under threats, this wasn't an accident, they were just two disturbed individuals that planned a brutal murder together. They both deserved what they got.
Imo Nicole needed life in prison. Her own mother! She made Billy the tool.

Also: Jean's death (by knife) after overcoming her fear of knives reminds me of the Spanish composer Enrique Granados: he had a fear of water (more specifically, drowning in it) and had to be convinced to travel to America (by ship--it was 1916) to perform (invited by President Woodrow Wilson). On the return home, a German U-boat sank the ship; he indeed drowned.

Nicole went to prison at such a young age and will spend her best years in there, released when she is closing in on middle age. Imagine a life thrown away like that and living with the guilt of murdering your own mother so viciously. How very sad - what a waste. As for Billy, it sounds like his mental health care wasn't the best - no child should have been on all of those drugs so young. That sounds like a disaster. He was likely permanently damaged by his mother's alcoholism during pregnancy. Another wasted life. What a tragic story.
Nicole should have gotten a longer sentence imo.
There is ample time for a full life at middle age. She should have gotten a longer sentence. If she was able to kill her mother, she isn’t going to regret it. Billy never had a chance.

Too many “good people” are opting out of raising good children-it’s actually part of a growing problem. However, becoming a parent is a very personal choice. I just wish that “bad people” would quit pumping out these poor babies who have little chance of becoming ethical, caring, hardworking citizens who want to contribute to a better world wherein personal responsibility is paramount. Sadly, they don’t even come close.

Funny how these young romances that are apparently worth killing for fall apart as soon as the cops get involved. It can be so frustrating to see someone that young throw their life away. None of them can ever seem to wait to get to the age of 18.
I once came across an interview with NK, where she seemed to blame her predicament on her mother. She said something like if someone had been more supportive of her, this might not have happened. I got the feeling that the “someone” that she was talking about was her mother, who had worked incredibly hard to ensure that her children had a good life😢
She's should get life in prison without parole. Criminals will make any excuses. Her mother is dead and she still blame her...she's a disgusting human being.

I can't help but think he should be in a hospital for the mentally ill, instead of mainstream prison, even if for life due to the violent crime he committed.
Another excellent breakdown and analysis, Dr. Grande. I, too, pictured a Looney Tunes scenario; the rope leading to them hiding behind a boulder, and striking a match on the rock to ignite the rope… waiting for a ‘ka-boom!
I believe that there has to be a root cause for Billy's behavior in his mother's prenatal alcohol abuse (and probably in her postnatal alcohol abuse, too).
The very fact that these two teens thought they 'clicked' *or* think that they have perfect chemistry...The flight or fight situation panic/anxiety didn't even settle in after the first four attempts, mainly due to the 'killers' stealth mode. The Mother didn't stand a chance against this two. Unless she dug real deep, and sourced for ideas on a complete separation, for all three, before approving anything.
Damn, makes me wonder what all those chemicals did to his brain that wasn't fully mature. Seems like the psychiatrists had problems diagnosising him adequately. I'm hearing antipshychotics, anti-anxiety, adhd, anti depressents and Bipolar.
Oh my gosh! Billy came to life with a huge disadvantage! I can not imagine his mom doing this to him! My heart goes out to him. He does have consequences for his actions, but my oh my. Love your babies! Don't destroy them! They are a gift!
They were allowed to be together! Jean was doing the best she could, I think.
About 30 years ago I used to work as a volunteer in a city hospital. I would feed and hold infants whose mothers could not legally take them home because they were born addicted to...well you name it. The worst cases I saw were the infants born to alcoholic mothers. Those babies were more restless and irritable than the babies born addicted to heroin or cocaine. I don't think Billy ever had a chance.
This is an awful case. Billy began life in very difficult circumstances. It didn’t improve. Nicole didn’t have enough boundaries or attention. Thank you Dr Grande❤
I have just learnt of the syndrome PDA- Newson’s Syndrome. Billy seems to have many of the characteristics. A child with whom I am acquainted, has been recently diagnosed with PDA. Sadly at the age of 7, he expressed a desire to end his life as he saw no other future for himself. This syndrome was first recognised as recently as 1983. How many criminals could be seen as fitting into these criteria and how many could have been convicted without being diagnosed? The autism spectrum appears to be very complex and broad indeed.

Billy seemed doomed from the start, tragically the impact of that has on others is so utterly destructive. I feel bad for the child that he was but not the monster he became.

FYI, Dr. Grande, I’m from western mass nearby some of the locales mentioned in this case. I never go there. My fam is a train wreck. I’m not. I’m a Hollywood dreamer, no kids, no divorces, single for life and loving it. Phew!

Nicole will be out at 50, the guy she's in prison for was already messaging another girl after his incarceration. She no longer has a mother and she'll never have the chance to start a family of her own. How utterly stupid and worthless 🙄🙄🙄

Smoking and drinking heavily while pregnant, I'm wondering if other substances were taken, as well as his mother's mental health issues, if any. Also, his life after birth. I didn't hear anything about his infancy, unless I missed it, but doubt it was calm considering all the problems he was treated for in childhood.

Mom gave her everything she wanted. She was a spoiled puke.
They stopped communicating after being arrested. Billy opted out of his trial because he did not want to sit there. But had to appear for sentencing. I will never understand these kids killing a parent for love . puppy love is temporary. Death is forever. Too bad neither could see this.
The girl should have, I'm not sure about him, as he was seriously mentally ill, and overly medicated for his developing brain, since hildhood.
Billy & Nicole weren't even full grown when they met, but their lives are basically over. It appears that both of the moms were in way over their heads. Tragic.
The variety of meds that this boy was on is extreme. There were a few on here that I've never even heard of and I'm a retired Resource / Special Education teacher.

Billy I feel never really had a chance, but the girlfriend…? I understand being excited when someone thinks you are sexually attractive and wants to be with you, especially if you haven’t felt so yourself and your environment likely told you viciously and repeatedly that you are not….but MURDERING?? It doesn’t even sound like mum put herself in the way of the relationship much, she just didn’t want them to be intimate before her daughter was 18. Literally all they had to do, was to wait 2 more years and then she could have moved in with her boyfriend and have all the intimacy she wanted. I…just don’t get it. Not even remotely.
I know 2 years can seem like forever to a teenager....but to throw their life away away because when they could have just waited 2 years to be together.

This was an interesting case for sure it definitely reminds me of how the late 90’s/ early 2000’s were with online dating and being young, and also the way medications were thrown around like candy. I was surprised when the towns the 2 were from are both kinda smaller areas I am familiar with and have visited many times in New England.
The multiple drugs part is fascinating. I’m a medical student that spent some educational time in child psychiatry. If they were throwing this many antipsychotic drugs at a child to see what would stick- his behavior problems were pretty serious then. The reality is medical science is quite limited in how much they can treat individuals like this in an outpatient setting. It’s really hoping they improve with the meds/ higher dosages and find a way to function in society. The alternative is institutionalization which rather hard to do.
If I recall correctly, the medications were part of a changing list, not necessarily prescribed all at the same time. I perceive some level of desperation on the part of the professionals attempting to treat Billy. A lot of it was trial and error which still crops up when they don’t know what to do.
Love is a many splendored thing...until it kills.

A Question about Billy Sullivan😩
I don't know anything about the Kasinkas family. However I am very interested in this "important figure in this story"- Mr. Barry Sullivan. Billy is clearly a victim of others making some very bad choices: (1) immoderate use of alcoholic beverages; (2) biting and cutting remarks about the appearance of others, as well as unflattering comments about choices of clothing; (3) while yet in the womb, this vile beast of a mother consumed a six-pack of beer daily as well as smoking cigarettes. Imagine the damage caused to Billy before he had a chance to live a normal life. Why does Dr. Grande fail to mention "fetal alcohol syndrome" in this case? That's a lapse of professional judgement. (4) Nightmares, asthma, and projectile ("the Exorcist") type vomiting. (5) Billy thinks about killing himself at the age of six.
How could there be any question that this individual would go on to do harm to others through no fault of his own? Responses to Billy's life remind me of the litany of victims from the Parkland school shooting. They had no grasp that N. Cruz, while listening to their suffering, had absolutely no way to grasp one syllable of what they were saying. That makes them fools rather than N. Cruz a evil ogre. There can be no justice in the world until we learn to provide a proper upbringing to those who are neglected due to bad choices by others. Thank you.
Bill and his family were neighbors of mine growing up. I remember him and his sisters would go MIA for days. When they would finally be seen, they talked about how Bill held the family hostage in the house. I would feel sooooo bad for the 3 sisters because they were the sweetest little girls. The mother OMG, you knew exactly why Bill was the way he was. She was worried about drinking and running after a relationship. Bill used to snap on us neighborhood kids, but no one played his games, and he got smacked and beat up every time he tired it.

I hear these stories of kids running up enormous phone bills and such. If I had ever even offered to pull a stunt like that, I would have been dead. I don't know what kind of parents these kids have but they're not the type I had. It was understood from the beginning that my behavior would stay in line or I would pay a heavy price.

Kids these days grow up in a much different environment and the parents are many times afraid of parenting kids. I think right now it’s way worse than in my generation, that’s for sure!

The events that happened prove that people do not have the slightest bit of free will, like zero freedom of will at all. Each only saw one option that made sense to them when confronting a problem.

They shouldn't give him life imprisonment, just many years in psychiatric care in a psychiatric prison ward. He needs help due having alcohol fetal symptoms. His mother drank and smoked a lot while she was pregnant with him.
He got extensive help. Sadly, you can't repair brain damage caused in utero by the mother abusing substances. Why should Jean or some other person suffer because of his damaged brain? She didn't cause it.
Mainstream prison doesn't seem appropriate for the seriously mentally ill.
He needs appropriate medication and monitoring, not just for him, but for those around him.
He'd probably still be locked up for life, but in a place suitable for his illnesses.
I can't imagine the horrors he's going to live with, or create, left as he is.

The younger years of her murderer were also horrific, it's a shame that hospitals for the mentally ill were closed down years ago, supposedly to protect the mentally ill, but didn't protect their victims. Sad all round.

The conflict between them was bound to escalate, considering there was no attempt to pacify it.
I am curious if couples, who have clear goals they are pursuing, have lower rates of criminal activity.
I am also curious if nontraditional arrangements are more likely to result in criminal activity.

Billy is really a handsome guy, isn't he? It's scary how appearances are still so important for women's self value, especially young girls. Poor Gene was between the cross and the sword as we say in my country, I don't think there was a right way to approach this situation: if she had not bound to Nicole's wishes and had been more assertive, the couple may have just decided to kill her sooner. Trying to be flexible may have bought her some time. Some cases don't really have a right answer I think. Edit: also I have a sense that most parents tend to take thir teenager children moods and apparent emotional struggles as something normal for the age, which is in most cases, but also seems to cover for a lot of deeper issues that may be going on.
