    This just cemented my initial theory of high altitude descent. There are instances where pilots become cocky and arrogant after years of flying and think that they can pull off stunts like these. All training does out the window. Co pilot is supposed to oppose the pilot under these circumstances, if he or she feels that SOPs are not being followed. Like the maker/checker concept. But unfortunately, sometimes Co pilots are young and inexperienced and are given a shut up call. The way this pilot was ignoring instructions from the CT was proof enough that he thought too much of himself. Only to realise his mistake after a failed attempt at landing. This airline needs discipline, strict action against pilots who don't follow SOPs, training to be conducted by external trainers, the rule book needs to be rewritten and pilots need to be on contract basis, instead of being full time employees of the airline, so that legal action can be taken against them in case of negligence. Captain, thank you for explaining in layman's terms what actually or possibly might have happened. Prayers for the deceased. Inna lillahe wa Inna illaihe rajeoun.

      a reckless pilot because of whom 100 other people died. Such pilots who think highly of themselves, who throw out all the SOPs and believe they can maneuver the aircraft at their will are just a disgrace to the pilot community. Even the ATC should be held responsible for allowing the aircraft to land when he knew that profile is too steep... but of course, Pakistan jaise chuttad cuntry mein sab chalta hai bhai......90 degree angle se bhi land karwate hain yeh log Allah se.....Gandu country

      Exactly ,co-pilot wud not hv objected him, bcz of this senior junior thing.... The overconfidence of one person n fear (being junior) of co- pilot .... Took life of so many innocents. Even pepl sitting at ATC sud not allow high speed descend of aircraft. Pilots sometimes try to become stunt hero forgetting abt their responsibility of life of pepl they are carrying .

      Kashif Azam. A paid Pilot has only ONE huge responsibility and that is of training very hard and learning HOW TO SAVE HIS OWN LIFE and never to orphan his aircraft, as Miltary pilots often do with their ejector seats, while their burning aircraft falls and kills people on the ground. In this case of the PIA crash, while the aircraft was so extra high and then while crashing, the pilot did not say to himself. " I am responsible for the passengers, for the cargo, for the expensive aircraft, and for the people living below me!" What he did was to try and save HIS OWN LIFE with what he accumulated in his mental and physical capacity and it looks that he did not care less to crash and kill his passengers or any people on the ground did he? The pilot was somewhat too proud and cocky about his own abilities.
      Please do not be fooled by pilots telling you that they are responsible for passengers, for cargo, for the expensive aircraft, and for people on the ground, above whom they normally fly without their permission! A pilot is just as responsible for SAVING HIS OWN LIFE when he is flying an empty private, military, and commercial plane.
      Pilots preach their social responsibility and wear their gold-braided uniforms and high peaked hats as an EMOTIONAL, social, tribal, ritual, to try and increase and maximize their salary and try to project a higher aura and social value than they really carry. A paid pilot is only RESPONSIBLE TO SAVE HIS OWN LIFE, as with that philosophy everyone gains out of that simple tacit psychological trick. The pilot's salary is a negotiated amount contracted and bargained for the PILOT'S OWN LIFE and no more than that. Owners of PIA, Insurances, Mathematicians, and Engineers all know that Pilots are merely 90 % consumable wares whether they fly commercially or military. During the war and during commercial flights the production rate of aircraft and insurance premiums clearly shows that a PILOT IS TREATED AS CONSUMABLE GOODS, so one needs to blind him with a high salary and a gold-braided uniform and medals on his dead chest and a high social conspicuous aura. The psychology of recruiting pilots is so tacit and so subtle that even Mothers and Wives are so proud that their sons/daughters and husbands are pilots, continuously risking their lives in commercial aircraft and flying Miltary aircraft to go and kill the sons and husbands of other wives and mothers while they selfishly want their own sons and husband to come back home to them. Statistics do show that 65% of aircraft incidents are to pilot's mistakes who are not as sharp as they think they are! That is a normal human characteristic where everything that he is a little taller than he is with some professions thinking that they are much taller than they really are. We have to live with that and fool people in taking risky professions as in the Miltary.
      The real responsibility exists with engineers and traffic controllers who see a wider picture than pilots do. The engineers look at aircraft merely as flying prosthetic aids for pilots, all born without natural wings. All aircraft are engineered PROSTHESES to help wingless pilots and passengers to enjoy their flying obsessions. The real continuous responsibility is with the engineer who builds the structure of the aircraft which is only a prosthetic aid wrapped around the pilots and passengers to help them fly. An engineer is responsible for every successful and every crashed flight that does not absorb the forces that kill the pilot, the passengers, and the people on the ground.
      The salary of a pilot, his gold-braided uniform, conditions of work, his peaked hat to make him look taller than he actually is, and his social pampering drug, is all a negotiated agreement, contract for VALUING THE PILOT'S OWN LIFE.
      Many times the pilot gains and does enjoy his salary and social status and sometimes the pilot die. It is all an agreed contract which the pilots are happy with. Any pilot can withdraw his contract at any time if he is not happy with those conditions. That is life.
      A pilot is no more than a Matador or a Cowboy choosing to play a game in the ring with a wild bull, most of the times the Matador wins, sometimes the bull wins. It is no use being emotional about it..........That is a pilot's, a matador's, a cowboy's life choice, no one forces them to do it, but they like the excitement and if they do not agree with that contract of service........................they all can take any other job which is just as satisfying. All this is not written in a pilot's contract............. to fool him into taking the job both in the commercial and military flying arena. That is life! Many of us are fools and we do not know it. Being spectacular and looking tall in society has its benefits and its consequences and pilots, matadors, and cowboys are ready to live with that, it is their own choice and they know the conditions of service.

    This is the official Prelim report from examination of FDR, CVR, ATC and approach and CCTV footage
    From the prelim report: From the beginning the crew failed to use standard call outs and cross checks and did not follow SOP in terms of clean cockpit and flight deck comm. The aircraft was cleared to 3000ft at the final waypoint...but when reaching Makli waypoint they were over 9000ft and 245knots. “Karachi Approach” inquired “confirm track mile comfortable for descend” and later advised to take an orbit, so that the aircraft can be adjusted on the required descend profile. No orbit was executed and the effort to intercept the glide slope and localizer (of ILS) was continued. The FDR indicated action of lowering of the landing gear at 7221 ft at around 10.5 Nautical Miles from Runway 25L. “Karachi Approach” advised repeatedly (twice to discontinue the approach and once cautioned) about excessive height. Landing approach was not discontinued. However, FDR shows action of raising of the landing gears at 1740 ft followed by retraction of the speed brakes (at a distance slightly less than 05 nautical miles from the runway 25L). At this time, the aircraft had intercepted the localizer as well as the glide slope. Flaps 1 were selected at 243 knots IAS, the landing gears and speed brakes were retracted. Over-speed and EGPWS warnings were then triggered. Since the approach to land was continued, “Karachi Approach” instead of
    changing over the aircraft to “Aerodrome Control”, sought telephonic landing clearance from the “Aerodrome Control”. The “Aerodrome Control” conveyed a landing clearance of the aircraft (without observing the abnormality that the landing gears were not extended) to “Karachi Approach”. Subsequently “Karachi Approach” cleared
    the aircraft to land. At 500 ft, the FDR indicates: landing gear retracted, slat/flap configuration 3, airspeed 220 knots IAS, descent rate 2000 ft/min. According to the FDR and CVR recordings several warnings and alerts such as over-speed, landing gear not down and ground proximity alerts were disregarded. The landing was undertaken with
    landing gears retracted. The aircraft touched the runway surface on its engines. Flight crew applied reverse engine power and initiated a braking action. Both engines scrubbed the runway at various locations causing damage to both of them. Figures hereunder show selected screenshots of security / CCTV cameras footages of the
    aircraft engines touching the runway and showing sparks due to scrubbing, along with marks on the runway. The “Aerodrome Control” observed the scrubbing of engines with the runway but did not covey this abnormality to the aircraft. It was conveyed to the “Karachi Approach” on telephone. Subsequently “Karachi Approach” also did not relay this abnormality to the aircraft. The landing was discontinued and a go-around was executed. FDR recording
    indicates a brief action of selection of landing gear lever to down position, which was immediately followed by its movement to up position. Intention to undertake another ILS approach for landing on runway 25L was conveyed, however shortly after the go-around both engines failed one by one. Ram Air Turbine (RAT) was deployed to
    power the essential systems. FDR data recording stopped during this timeframe (as per the designed limitation). The aircraft was unable to maintain required height. The aircrew declared the emergency situation that both engines were lost, and transmitted a “Mayday Call”. Evidences from the wreckage indicate reasons for right engine
    failure, however left engine requires further examination, and landing gear in extended position did not demonstrate any malfunction of the landing gear system. The aircraft crashed about 1340 meters short from runway 25L. It was a slow speed impact with high angle of attack, with aircraft configuration indicating landing gear extended, slats at step / position 1, and flaps retracted. The said configuration was ascertained and documented from the wreckage at the crash site (as the FDR data recording had stopped earlier).

  • @nirmalya171
    @nirmalya171 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Sir, if we hear the ATC recording, there is a warning sound that can be heard. It may be possible that when they were descending from 3500 feet, the speed of the plane was more than 260 knots. A320 has an inbuilt programming, that even though you have your levers down, at that speed the landing gears do not extend to prevent structural damage to the landing gear systems. It could be that the pilots thought they have the gears down, but in reality they weren't. It was only when the scraped the engine, they realised it. And the rest is what happened.
    Your views please.

    Have a question: how do we know the landing gear were down on the initial approach ? Form what I've seen elsewhere the landing gear may not have come down. Also, due to the high-speed of the fast decent the aircraft's speed was above the third and fully extend flaps notch which would not allow the flaps to be fully extended.
    Otherwise, your video provides the simplest explaination for the events of the PIA plane crash. But it is hard to believe the second in command in the cockpit would allow the captain to handle a commercial aircraft that way ! Could it be possible the cockpit crew were flying with altered brains, due to some chemical or latent effect from low pressure at altitude ? To me it just seems far too many mistakes were made !!!

      Modern planes are computerized and equipped with systems that can detect if the plane is configured for landing and the gear isn't down. In this case if the landing gear wasn't down, the cockpit would have had multiple warnings, which are impossible to ignore. Hence, there is no possibility that the gear had failed or was not down properly. The pilots have made a series of errors in this case.

    The undercarriage takes 8 seconds to retract. That’s 3000 ft of runway at over 200 kts. The flight profile shows that the undercarriage’s being down on the first approach is highly unlikely.
    Far more likely is that tunnel vision and startle led to the undercarriage’s being missed and warnings of low height rather than undercarriage up (look up warning logic) being shut out.

    A very interesting perspective. However I feel you made an error in that the first mistake was being late on his let-down. According to the remote data, he'd been descending VERY steeply to try and intercept the ILS. That, of course, meant he was carrying a great excess of speed. Meaning his gear wouldn't extend (hence the chimes) with the tragic results we know. I believe the pilot knew he was in trouble but for some unknowable reason chose to continue.
    Personally, I think some blame for this should be placed at ATC's door. The controller clearly knew the flight was off profile, otherwise he wouldn't have ordered the turn to 180. Why on earth didn't he revoke the landing permission? That one act could have saved all those poor people!
    My deepest condolences go to all the families of the victims of this tragedy.

      I have analyzed C17 landing gears, there are many ways you can cause anomalies.

    • @jimbobeire
      @jimbobeire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@technologyandinnovation4586 I've only heard partial ATC coms on this. At what stage did the pilot inform the ATC that he had a gear problem? I was not convinced the gear had been deployed at all. The marks on the runway suggest two incidents of engine pod strike. The high speed in the descent was above the max speed that the A320 will allow the gear to be deployed. Above 260kts you can pull the lever, but the computer will not initiate the hydraulics because at those speeds lowering the landing gear can cause damage. They were also still above speed crossing the threshold, which poses another problem, that instead of getting an automatic reminder about gear deployment at 750 AGL, the system will instead give a warning "too low Terrain" . It warns "too low, gear" depending on flap position and IAS being below 190kts.
      If the gear was down initially, and they selected to retract it, I don't think there was time for the gear doors to be closed before contacting the runway, and from what limited photos and video I've seen of the runway afterwards, there didn't seem to be part of the landing gear doors strewn about, just a set of scrape marks indicating more than one incident of pod strike and scrape down the runway.

    I didn't get how after belly landing at the first place they had been able to rectract the landing gear? Since it wasn't even open, therefore they did the belly landing, weren't they?

    • @rajkshitij6348
      @rajkshitij6348 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Since captain estimated that landing was not possible just few feet above the ground, first officer by mistake pulled back landing gears with flaps. And thus resulted in belly landing which was not intended. See this video again m

    • @meet2891
      @meet2891 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the aircraft gear manual it's mention that if altitude and air speed is high then aircraft didn't allow to lower the gear to protect aircraft. In 1st attempt altitude is high and speed also so it didn't go down while in 2nd attempt gear was down so there is no malfunctioning. Gear was working perfectly it didn't deployed in first attempt because pilot didn't follow his landing procedure.

      They were not flying 1st time and with out training to freez they were experienced. Here they got too much comfortable overconfident and forgot the necessary.

      TH-cam daily said precisely.... they are not new comers to freeze .. pilots have to understand instructions given by atc are not casual instructions. They can only help and know about flight situations.

      Pilots are not like everyone else. They are highly trained to react with SOPs during an emergency and not to panic. The emergencies, according to this video, were all of their own making, even from the start.

    Since the pilots are no more in this world
    We cant even imagine how they could've been feeling
    when they knew they were going to die
    So i guess all we must and could do is just pray from them and the rest of the people

    What about if they have forgotten to lower the landing gears in first attempt as there is continuous beep in the radio transmission of copilot. If it is not of landing gears then what could it be? In my opinion they forgot to lower the gears because they were too much engrossed in intercepting the glide path or ILS. I m a pilot and u can explain in aviation language as well. Thanks

Please avoid PIA for all domestic and international flights. Also other Pakistani airlines for domestic travel within Pakistan. Use railways or bus. Please save your selves. Life and Death is in Gods hands i know but we have to be careful aswell. This crash makes me sick to my stomach. Also please share this video as much as possible so the truth can come out.

    I live close to this tragedy site and its all clear, it was at least 110 % pilot fault who made at least10 unimaginable blunders
    To crash the safest aircraft.with out any reason. He had just got mad because there is no professionalism in the PIA. If there was even 10 % sense of responsibility, he would have approached to land like all other airline pilots following SOPs & procedures. He was coming so high and fast that it was not possible to land and when ATC asked him to control these or go around, he arrogantly said “I m comfortable” and without opening the gear bumped the plane into runway and knocked out the engines. And still when he was guided by the ATC to reach 3000, he said same thing without knowing that he was without the engines and even he could have avoided the populated area if he had got slightly right in the open area of cantt leading to right runway. Just shocking blunder after blunder till the last ie he had dumped the plane and 97 people due to his stupidities but also dumped the sleeping rozadars on ground. He should be charged for murder of all the people, property and the sentiments of billions of people rather than any cover up if we want to avoid such things in future.
