@@WavyBoats Yeah I know, freedom and stuff but there really needs to be a regulation in the US similar to here in OZ where when crossing a nominated bar PFDs are required for all.
There shouldn't be a need but like here, people "hazz teh dumb" and obviously don't have the sense to take such precautions without being forced to. There also needs to be stricter regulation of existing statutes, create a wake at Black Point and you are toast but do whatever you like on the bars.

Highly advised for anyone navigating Haulover to watch that.
Rule #1: keep your bow above the water, especially if you have an open bow.
Rule #2: make sure your boat is suitable for the current conditions. Bigger waves = bigger boat.
Rule #3: "lake boats" aren't made for the ocean. Lake boats have shallow draft and downturned bows. Stay in the harbor with lake boats.
Rule #4: if you take even one wave over the bow, turn around and go back in. With each wave you're getting heavier and sinking deeper, which means the next wave will dump even more water inside your boat. It's a downward spiral, then it's too late.
Rule #5: secure all passengers before entering rough water.
Rule #6: no passengers in open bow in rough water (judgement call, based on size of vessel vs size of waves).
Rule #7: wearing floatation devices in rough water highly advised, kids especially. At the very least have them handy, and in sufficient numbers for all passengers.

No life jackets are asking to drown as well and once overboard the other boats can’t see a swimmer if they are lucky enough to be able to swim after some of these washovers.

In my experience, the time to put life preservers on small children is not at the dock but wait until you're in heavy waves and the bow of the boat is submarining thru the waves. Make sure all of the adults have had a few beers and just for fun overload the vessel and plow into the waves as fast as you can to insure the maximum amount of water washes over the bow.

If you're too ignorant, too drunk, too full of pride, or just too bloody stupid to realize that, when you're in a small boat - especially an open boat - and the head seas get that bad it's time to make a change of plans and stay in the bay, ESPECIALLY when you're hauling kids, you have no business with a boat. BONUS POINTS FOR STUPIDITY: If you're going to try it anyway, be sure and don't insist everyone put on life jackets and warn them to get a good grip FIRST before hitting the rough water. I've spent years as an ocean tour guide in large rigid hull inflatables on the coast. It amazes me that some of these boats are clearly expensive, and yet the operators don't know how to run them and are clearly put their passengers lives at risk. Either they don't have to take a safe boating course or are too arrogant to take one. It's not just the risk of swamping or having a passenger in the water without a life jacket, it's the damage you can do to someone especially if they are on the bow of the boat when a wave tosses them into the air. There are plenty of hard things to land on, like handlebars and the deck itself, or even landing hard on your tailbone or back. To put anyone in the front section of a small boat in high frequency waves is incredibly irresponsible... you can see the slingshot coming from a mile away. Also the happy faces turn to fear very quickly after the first dunking. Amazing video and very educational. Anyone travelling through that canal to the open sea should have to watch this video before being allowed to do so.

I think it has to do with being hyper focused on whatever made them successful, and that ego transferring to things they don't know as well. For All boat owners who don’t already know….. (I Have had boats now for 56 yrs and navigated the world’s most treacherous waters) in a following sea (stuffing sea conditions) to prevent stuffing and possibly sinking pay Attention to the following. Please note this is Not a 100% in depth look at stuffing but enough to reduce your chances by 90%.
    1. Adjust trim tabs all the way up… to give bow lift.
    2. If you have outboards trim them right out (not so much to make it Cavitate). This will lighten the bow by up to 50%.
    3. If it’s smaller boat put all passengers or weight into the middle & back of the boat.
    4. Keeping the bow up and light will eliminate 90% of all stuffing.
    5. If you have dual engines use the left of right engine to correct the “ swerve “ when coming down or surfing a wave as the steering won’t do it properly or quickly enough if rocks or jetties are nearby.
    6. Keep eye on wave behind coming up and use power going forward to keep wash from coming over the back of the boat and sinking it.
    7. Remain vigilant to in front and behind the boat firstly then sides.
    8. Never turn so as to put the boat in a position to be hit from the side by a wave, look and time your turn right and quickly as safe to do so.
    9. Other than ships etc always hit waves dead on straight and with firm constant power to help avoid being flipped over on your back.
This is not just my opinion, it’s fact. Happy Boating. Dave.
