Better to combine as soon as possible to stop losing bees, as far as time of day... I think when all bees are home(late afternoon/ early am not in the dark ;]) to keep all the bees with the move. If that doesn't matter then I don't think time of day matters. My opinion , of course!

I keep all my hives pretty close, side by side so I went ahead and combined the 5 or 6 i had that were queenless with the ones next to them that had queens. Hopefully the lost ones will drift to other colonies and not just die out. Needless to say the bee yard was in an uproar last evening and the girls aren't happy today still lol.

If you have Italians they will drift😁 Things will calm down, give them time to adjust.
What about the workers that were out foraging when the colonies were merged? Will they come to the new colony?
They will likely drift to the closest colony near the old spot. The ' merged hive' the workers will return as normal. Thanks for watching🌻

Is 24 hrs long enough for bees to merge peacefully
With this method the hive may take as long as it needs to chew thru the paper, let them do the work.
