  • In today's video I unite two nucleus colonies using a method that we don't use very often in that we use an essential oil spray to unite two colonies.
    Rather than using newspaper between the two colonies we spray each frame of two nucs with a mic of water and essntial oils and load them into a full sized brood box alternating between each nuc.

      Glad it was helpful! Don't overdo the essential oils though if you try this method, the bees are super-sensitive to it and I've a couple of fails due to putting way too much oil in the mixture.

    Hi Stewart
    I'm uniting two whole colonies using the newspaper method. One has been queenless for a while. Would addition of essential oils help with this do you think?

    • @TheNorfolkHoneyCo
      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dorothie,
      Thanks for getting in touch.
      I would stick with just the newspaper method. It works really well and using essential oils in addition won't make much difference really.
      Good luck with it, let me know how it goes.

    Another awesome video! I really do learn loads from watching you Stewart! I live in Northumberland if you ever fancy a bee holiday in my treehouse - only payment required - sorting out my chaotic apiary!!!

    Hi Stewart, What type of hives are the poly, they did not look like the standard National Hives, is it a langstroth?

    • @TheNorfolkHoneyCo
      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paras,
      The poly hives are commercial hives. They measure 500mm x 500mm approx. square.

    hi Stewart I have watched your video where you use lemon grass oil. Unfortunately I can't locate the follow up video mentioned
    .Can you give me the mix, ie how much oil do you add to the water, and of course how much water?

    Stewart, Have you defined your mixture of lemongrass oil and water? Dave

      Hi There,
      Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been away for a few days. Just three or four small drops in about 0.5l is all I use and I might reduce that this year, it doesn't need to be overpowering, just enough to mask the colony pheromone.

    Hi Stewart, what make of essential oils do you use aren't some toxic. Cheers for the great videos

    • @TheNorfolkHoneyCo
      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Richard,
      It's a food grade oil I got some time ago from Amazon and yes it is because they do say some of the oils are toxic although I've not seen any actual eviddence I'd rather not risk it.

    Hi Stewart,
    Learning a lot from your videos. Every video you produce, they are really useful specially for newbie in Bee Keeping like myself. Thank you very much.
    Yesterday, I inspected my hives, and I found one very strong colony until two weeks ago, lost the queen. I could not find her, and also there are not broods and eggs. So, I am sure, she is dead for unknown reason. I am in big a dilemma whether I should put a new brood frame with eggs from another colony to this queen less hive so that they would make new queen (hoping) or is it too late this season taking account of where I live (Wales) for new queen to emerge and go for mating. I would be very grateful if you could give some advice.
    After watching your this video, another option that I think I have is to unite two nuc swarmed colonies that I collected, and get one spare queen from here, and introduce in queen less colony/hive. In this case, would you please give us information on what percentage of water that you mix with lemon grass essential oil to make a spray ?
    Thank you very much.

      Hi Kush,
      Thanks for commenting.
      I use a 100ml spray bottle with about 3-4ml of oil floating on the surface. Not the most technical but it seems to work ok for me.

    What sort of quantities in the recipe please? Water to oil.

    • @TheNorfolkHoneyCo
      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brigsy,
      I don't measure it out exactly, I fill the bottle with water leaving a gap of about 3-4ml at the top and then shake in a layer of essential oil. I will make some accurate measurements for next week and post the details in an update video for you.

      Hi Brigsy,
      I've a new recipe that I have been trying out which is simply 0.5l of light sugar syrup and just 10-15 drops of the essential oil. Seems to work ok and uses a lot less essential oil.

      Lavender essential oil would work and lavender has a calming effect, which is used in the smokers

      I've not used lavender oil but as beehinde says it may have a calming effect.

    Why did you change from peppermint to Lemongrass? I thought lemongrass could start a robbing situation.

    Hi Stewart,
    Thanks for yet another great video - I really enjoy watching them. I'm getting ready for a new out apiary in the autumn and, from a security point of view, have often wondered how you get your initials on your wooden BBs and supers. I'm guessing you use some kind of branding iron? If so, is it something you made yourself, or did you purchase it?
    Cheers,
    Phill

      Hi Phil,
      Thanks for commenting. The brand was made for me by my son-in-law as a birthday present. There are brands available from Thorne Beekeeping here in the UK. www.thorne.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&filter_name=brand&product_id=4860
      Not nearly as large as the one I have but quite nice all the same.

      Thanks for the prompt reply, Stewart - much appreciated. BTW, Do you just brand your BBs and supers, or do you brand other items of kit too?
