One of Dolly's best lines from the 9 to 5 movie - “I've got a gun out there in my purse. Up until now I've been forgiving and forgetting because of the way I was brought up, but I'll tell you one thing: if you ever say another word about me or make another indecent proposal, I'm gonna get that gun of mine, and I'm gonna change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot!”
I've seen in an interview with Dolly that this is based on a true incident when she pulled that gun, from her purse, on a dude to protect her and another lady the first time she was in New York City.
Dolly definitely had the hair. Back in the '70s, my mother had a cosmotology school (beauty school) and a couple of hair salons. Dolly asked my mother to travel with her and keep up her hair and wigs. A great opportunity for my mother, but she didn't want to do all of that traveling and be away from her family. I've always loved Dolly, but I especially loved my mother.
I was young and went to work at the Wrangler factory in the little town near my small town. It employed most of that town. Wrangler used to be made in America. They eventually closed down the factory and moved it to Mexico. Regardless, I had been there about a month, when an older woman who had worked there, I suppose most of her life, mentioned on a break to some of the other ladies at the table that she was worried. She was two months to retirement and wasn't sure if they would let her make it. When she walked away, the other ladies at the table began talking about how the poor thing would be fired soon. I spoke up and asked why. One of the women at the table said, "I haven't seen anyone make it to retirement in the past 10 years." I blew it off. Two weeks before that elderly woman was to reach her retirement, she was fired. I witnessed it. I had my first lesson in corporate.
I promise on my kids' video game collections that you will *LOVE* the movie '9 to 5' - starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman. It's fun, funny, and the 'bad guy' gets what he deserves ;) Even if you don't do a reaction vid to it, the watch is worth every minute! These three ladies are priceless stars who work so well together to tell the story. Very glad you took the time to react to the song (reminding me I haven't seen the film in too long), so thank you Polo!
Dolly Parton's music is extremely difficult to categorize. She has some songs that are pure country, but she's done songs for Brandi Carlisle, with Melissa Etheridge, a TON of gospel, music for Tom Petty, etc. I call her music, "Dolly Parton music." Her greatest songs aren't the popular ones. They are the songs she's lived and written about personally. She's a VERY deep Being. She's on a Spiritual Plane higher than anyone I know.
i feel like a lot of non-country fans mostly dislike the generic keith urban--brand stadium country (bo burnham made a song called country song mocking that exact genre). where its a basic adlibs of trucks, beer, women that isnt genuine. i think getting into classics or even new songs that have genuine soul put into them makes it a lot better for non-country fans. dolly parton, johnny cash, etc for classics. some new(er) cointry singers i think have the same spark are chris stapleton and orville peck.

I guess I don't really understand music genres very well - lol.
Dude, she has written more than 5k songs. She gives so much to so many. And the woman has done A LOT for women too. I really recommend watching her interview with Dan Rather. Amazing.
Dolly Parton is a country legend who has been recording & writing songs since the 60's. Love her storytelling songs the most like "Jolene" & "Coat Of Many Colors". She has had so many hits such as "I Will Always Love You", "Yellow Roses", "My Tennessee Mountain Home", "Here You Come Again" etc. She did a lot of great duets with Kenny Rogers & Porter Wagoner. She also collaborated with Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris & they released a few "Trio" albums. "9 To 5" is a great song & so is the 1980 movie of the same name that Dolly starred in. "Home Free" does a fun version of this song too that I think you would enjoy.
She also has an album with Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn that is amazing. It's called Honky Tonk Angels that is excellent. Saw Dolly live a few years ago and Tammy many years before that. Both were amazing in concert
Islands in the Stream wad written and produced by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees. Kenny Rogers was recording it, but Barry wasn't happy with it and said "we need Dolly Parton." I would argue that genre is an artifact that is a stereotypical view of music. Old time country music is simply pop, popular with the average person, of a certain geographical area. Now pop has become a bad label with music enthusiast, but it is certainly very popular with the masses. Dolly Parton is simply a great musician.
Dolly Parton is an amazing woman. Period. I have loved her since I was a kid in the 70's-80's. I'm so happy that you've become a fan as well. Her vibrato is legendary.
Dolly's "9 to 5" became somewhat of an unofficial anthem of the early 80s women's labor movement ~ you have to remember that as much as 2nd Wave Feminism started in the late 60s and the legal/political fight ran throughout the 70s, it wasn't actually until the early 80s that women started entering the labor market in great numbers ~ especially real career jobs... which is precisely what "9 to 5" the movie was about 😉👉
I did not realize how truly good and unique her voice was until I heard the version of 9 to 5 with her and Kelly Clarkson, I was floored by her sharp highs.
You are correct, A few years back when a group of tornados went through kentucky and destroyed many homes, Dolly donated 11 million dollars to the people of kentucky to help them rebuild cuz alot of them couldnt afford home insurance. God Bless Dolly .
hearing Aesop Rock quoting Dolly in his 9-5ers Anthem w/ lines, 'fumble out of bed & stumble to the kitchen POUR MYSELF A CUP OF AMBITION & yawn & stretch & my life is a mess & if i never make it home today God bless...' just 1 of those aesop things that set a higher bar for artistry.
I've been listening to Dolly since the year I was born, 1957! my mother played her first and then i fell in love with her voice and so I continue to this day to listen to Dolly Parton! you should watch the movie that goes with this video, it's hysterical! Great reaction!
Congratulations on being born in the best year ever, although we didn't have a choice in that we were lucky to be born in '57! We got to experience the best music ever, both from our parents era and our own! Thank you for your reply! Deb
Dolly was co-starring in the movie Nine to Five. One evening waiting to shoot a scene she thought that Nine to Five would make a great song. She wrote it, and it became the theme song to the movie, and a massive hit.
I saw Dolly when she just got started, back in 1968ish when she was still singing with Porter Wagner. My Dad took me the concert with the family, and I fell in love with Dolly and have enjoyed her music ever since. My dad, she’s gonna be somebody someday, and he was right. You should check out the song she wrote titled, Coat of Many Colors. It’s a story/song she wrote about her childhood.
You must find that old movie & watch it. '9 to 5' starred Dolly & Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin when they were all younger & working in an office. Hilarious & it goes where you never dreamed it would go. You will never believe what they do to their boss. Entertaining as hell. So fun seeing Dolly being Dolly in a movie. Her character was just like her & so dang fun. As for her voice? Dolly is the Queen & literally the richest country music performer in the entire world, The reason is obvious. And she donates millions of dollars to charity. She also has a book program & gives away millions of free books every year. She had a backward education, living in a shack with 11 siblings & pushes the importance of reading & education. A true philanthropist. She is sweet & sassy & I adore her. Miley Cyrus is her Goddaughter & they have some tunes out there together as well. They even hosted a New Years Eve show on TV this past January together. What a pair!
When Dolly was asked to be in this movie, it was her first and she didn't know how things were done, so she memorized the whole script. Then she was asked if she could write the title song, so she went to her hotel and using her 'acrylic nails' as the sound (like a typewriter), she wrote that song and recorded it. She used the women on the set to be her back-up singers. The man beside her in the video with the guitar, is her real life brother. Glad you enjoyed this but you're going down a very big rabbit hole with Dolly as she wrote over 3000 songs, has appeared in a few movies, created the Imagination Library (for kids from birth to kindergarten - free books), helped raised a lot of money for her 'people' when fire came which raised enough money that she was able to give every family $2000.00 a month for six months to help them, she created a scholarship fund for kids from her hometown (which grew to include the whole area) for kids to stay in school and graduate, she also donated money to help in the development of a vaccine for the Covid virus, her famous Dollywood amusement park which she envisioned and created to help the people of her hometown Sevierville, Tennessee and hired tons of people to work there so they could have jobs, the Governor of Tennessee created a Dolly Day, a bronze statue of her is in front of the City Hall (which apparently her father used to go and wash it every day), and on and on and on. What an legend and icon.
Singers use that "quiver" you mentioned to add warmth and style to their music. The official term is vibrato and it is usually used at the end of a line or when a note is held for a long time, just to give the sound some interest. But some singers, like Dolly, have a very fast vibrato that makes their voice very distinctive. Another example is Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen. --- Stepping down off my music teacher podium now. 🙂
I'm sure you know that vibrato is not just used for interest but also because it makes it easier to sustain a note for a longer period of time. I'm not sure why but it uses less air to sustain a vibrato than a note sung without vibrato especially at the extremes of a singer's range. From someone who has been singing for 37ish years.
9 t0 5 is the theme song to the movie with Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin. Great Movie with great actressesI. My favorite line, " .... from a rooster to a hen with one shot."
Dolly's song Coat of Many Colors, I believe is the most autobiographical song she wrote. Here at Easter time, you should give her song, "He's Alive!" a listen. She first sang it LIVE at some awards show decades ago and I was watching and when she hit the chorus I literally got goose bumps. I also love her song, Old Flames Can't Hold a Candle to You and the song, Those Memories, that she did with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. I think people will still be listening to Dolly's music a hundred years from now!
Dolly's movies are really entertaining, too. My favorites are this one, 9 to 5 (with Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dabney Coleman), Straight Talk (with James Woods) and Rhinestone (with Sylvester Stallone). She's great in Steel Magnolias, too, holding her own with all the great actresses in that.
Dolly is a legend. Just an amazing singer and she has such a beautiful personality. She has done so much to help people and never brags about it. She came from humble beginnings, and she has never forgotten that. This is such a relatable song. And the movie? You will love it. The boss in that movie...worked for one just like him. "Jolene" but Dolly is a must. Especially the live version where she explains what inspired her to write the song. She's so funny telling the story. "I Will Always Love You" and she sings a song called "Island In The Stream" with the late Kenny Rogers that is awesome.
9 to 5 was a movie staring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin. They were filming the movie and asked her if she could write the theme song and here it is.
Kelly Clarkson and Dolly do a remake of this on a documentary titled "Still Working 9 to 5". It is slowed way down, and the lyrics just shine in a way you don't notice on this version.
There's a live version somewhere where Dolly literally creates the intro piano by brushing her fake nails together. She's truly one of a kind and a national treasure.
Dear Polo, are you aware that Miss Dolly - aka the Empress of All She Surveys - wrote this song, and has written between *3 and 4 thousand songs* in her lifetime?😮 She’s truly unique and utterly inspiring. Thank you for honoring her!! 😄
"Coat of many colors" She is probably the only singer with songs about being poor, as many more make songs about the things they have and how great they are. She always had a genuine tenderness that spoke to me.
Dolly's brother Randy is featured in this video. He's on the right playing an electric guitar and gets a screen shot by himself about three quarters of the way through.
Great joke. I liked it.Dolly Parton sang the theme song from 9 to 5 and also was one of the main characters in the movie. She was one of the main characters in Steel Magnolias. She’s great as a singer and great as an actress too. Multitalented.
So many employers complain that workers are not "loyal" anymore. It's because they are treated badly and dumped at the whim of the company big shots.I agree. Dolly is right on and so are you.
This song was written for the film 9 to 5 staring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin to be honest very little has changed for women in the work place in the 40 years since it's release. Dolly Parton created Dollywood in her native East Tennessee to bring jobs to the area after her family struggles being the 4th of 12 kids and struggling to get by
A Dolly song that still is truly amazing to me, is Hello God, which she wrote after 9-11 and her performance at the CMA's with a choir backing was one of her career's best as far as I'm concerned.
The origin of this song is really interesting. You ought too look up how she wrote it. Those fingernails are for more than just plucking the strings of the guitar. She's is a 1 of a kind artist.
Dolly Parton wrote I Will always Love You and made 10million in royalties. Which is more than Whitney Houston made from singing it Another great country artist that you might like is Johnny Cash. Ring of Fire is one of his biggest hits. He also sang a cover of Hurt (Nine Inch Nails) in 2002 shortly before he passed away-VERY powerful!

🤣🤣 iconic scene
Great and funny movie!❤
Best line in the whole movie!
Love love loved her in that movie. Steel Magnolias was another one that she shined in. ❤❤❤
I've seen in an interview with Dolly that this is based on a true incident when she pulled that gun, from her purse, on a dude to protect her and another lady the first time she was in New York City.
Dolly is the most lovable person on the planet ❤
shes the kindest person in the music industry.

That's horrible! And yet it happened so often.
Love Dolly ❤
She wrote that song on set of the movie while on a lunch break. No joke! That’s talent.
Dolly is the embodiment of the term "a good person". Love her.
she's a truly GREAT person.
“Dolly Parton smells like baby powder and cotton candy.”
-Kevin Smith
Dolly is a legend. Let’s just be real.
I encourage everyone to watch the movie it's a classic.
Her voice is just... It's as if singing comes to her as easily as breathing. She's perfect.
Dolly is one of the kindest, most giving, caring, and most talented people. She's so beloved and is truly a national treasure. 🥰
And with all that "kindest, giving, caring and talent" she's a h*ll of a business woman! Sharp as a tack!
Quiver? I think it's more of a fluttering. I love it too!
She uses her money to buy books for kids
She's an American icon.
Underrated comment again

Not a huge country fan myself, but everyone loves Dolly. She's a force!
i feel like a lot of non-country fans mostly dislike the generic keith urban--brand stadium country (bo burnham made a song called country song mocking that exact genre). where its a basic adlibs of trucks, beer, women that isnt genuine.
i think getting into classics or even new songs that have genuine soul put into them makes it a lot better for non-country fans. dolly parton, johnny cash, etc for classics. some new(er) cointry singers i think have the same spark are chris stapleton and orville peck.

Don’t forget Islands In The Stream
That's one of the Kenny roger duets mentioned in the comment you replied to.

Dolly and Kenny Rogers did a duet that you will probably recognize, "Islands in the Stream"
Her songs are usually her life stories. She knows where she came from and loves it….
Watch the movie this song was written for and she stars in it- 9-5, came out in 1980 I think
FYI this was a pop track, not country. She made a very famous country-to-pop conversion and this was her first "pop" hit. "Coat of Many Colors" is a far better representation of her 'country' hits. She had crossover hits like 'Jolene' and 'I Will Always Love You' also. Source: I'm old.

Not really she made a new Genre. The Dolly Genre.
This was NOT her first pop hit. She had already scored a number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977 with "Here You Come Again."
I think she won Grammys in the country category
Dolly Parton is an amazing woman. Period. I have loved her since I was a kid in the 70's-80's. I'm so happy that you've become a fan as well. Her vibrato is legendary.
Watch the movie 9 to 5! She can act too!!
Love her line about it "takes alot of money to look this cheap"!
Her ability to talk whilst singing at same time with always telling a story is why she’s so relatable & having an incredible range
This was a huge hit of a song and a movie when this came out. She is a natural songwriter.

Country Music, love it or hate it, one thing you have to understand... the absolute best working musicians on the planet live & work in Nashville.
This takes me back to childhood, trapped in my grandparents car with windows rolled up both grandparents smoked cigarettes. Old school hotboxing.
I hated that shit... the smoke always fcked me up

If you could relate to Dolly's "9 to 5" I bet you would get a kick out of Johnny Paycheck's "Take This Job And Shove It." 😁
Dolly always puts her whole heart and emotion into each song she sings. She is such a great person.
Listen to an interview about how she wrote this while filming the movie 9-5 . She is such a gifted writer!
If you haven't seen the movie 9 to 5, you should definitely check it out! Watching Dolly act is pure joy. 😊
More people need to be like Dolly. Just think how nice the world could be.
most definitely agreed sadly that the sad situation with big corporations, and especially corporate America!
Jolene" & "I Will Always Love You" were written on the same night!
The aerial view was to show you what her boss was looking at and where his mind was
POLO, THIS SOUNDTRACK IS FROM THE MOVIE 9 TO 5, STARRING DOLLY, LILY TOMLIN, AND JANE FONDA....
The movie is absolutely hilarious and she stars in it, you really need to check it out sometime.
Fun fact that “washboard” sound at the beginning is actually Dolly, playing her fingernails. It reminded her of the sound of a typewriter!
It's worthwhile to check out Dolly singing "Jolene" one of my personal favorites
Dolly is the best! Have you checked out Dolly Parton and Pentatonix singing Jolene? They won a Grammy for it. It’s epic.
YOOOO this song is a classic. Makes an excellent double feature with Aesop Rock's 9-5ers anthem.
Tequila, 🤣 If not Dolly, then Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Don Williams, John Denver, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson 💚🤙
9 to 5 was a movie staring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin. They were filming the movie and asked her if she could write the theme song and here it is.
that song is in my youtube playlist for years because i love it so much
She is a cultural icon who is so well-rounded in so many ways. She is an excellent role model for many, too!
Kelly Clarkson and Dolly do a remake of this on a documentary titled "Still Working 9 to 5". It is slowed way down, and the lyrics just shine in a way you don't notice on this version.
I love the vwersion
There's a live version somewhere where Dolly literally creates the intro piano by brushing her fake nails together. She's truly one of a kind and a national treasure.
Dear Polo, are you aware that Miss Dolly - aka the Empress of All She Surveys - wrote this song, and has written between *3 and 4 thousand songs* in her lifetime?😮 She’s truly unique and utterly inspiring. Thank you for honoring her!! 😄
Fun fact She plays her acrylic nails in this song
Dolly is so lovely and sweet ❤️❤️ speaking and singing truth 🎀
"Coat of many colors" She is probably the only singer with songs about being poor, as many more make songs about the things they have and how great they are. She always had a genuine tenderness that spoke to me.
Dolly's brother Randy is featured in this video. He's on the right playing an electric guitar and gets a screen shot by himself about three quarters of the way through.
You need to find Dolly with Linda Ronstadt and Emmy Lou Harris singing The Sweetest Gift
You never have to worry about her messing up, it makes listening to her songs all the more fun. Add to that, she's an amazing writer. No down sides.
Great joke. I liked it.Dolly Parton sang the theme song from 9 to 5 and also was one of the main characters in the movie. She was one of the main characters in Steel Magnolias. She’s great as a singer and great as an actress too. Multitalented.
Dolly, is a VERY VERY, HUMBLE Woman, giv’s back 2 her community, Dollywood, U otta check out, Coat Of Many Colors 😢😢😢, Talk about humble 😎😎👍👍
So many employers complain that workers are not "loyal" anymore. It's because they are treated badly and dumped at the whim of the company big shots.I agree. Dolly is right on and so are you.
You should watch the movie 9 to 5 in which Dolly stars in the movie with Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin.
Dolly also wrote the song Whitney Houston is famous for, "I will always love you!"
This song was written for the film 9 to 5 staring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin to be honest very little has changed for women in the work place in the 40 years since it's release.
Dolly Parton created Dollywood in her native East Tennessee to bring jobs to the area after her family struggles being the 4th of 12 kids and struggling to get by
The proceeds she gets from. Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You are given to Black charities in Tennessee.
Doll's a very versatile artist. Singer, song writer, actress. Dolly wrote and won awards for I Will Always Love You. To many more to mention here.
This is a lead song for the movie 9 to 5. Omg it’s great! You really should watch it!! Dolly is in the movie and she’s awesome!
A Dolly song that still is truly amazing to me, is Hello God, which she wrote after 9-11 and her performance at the CMA's with a choir backing was one of her career's best as far as I'm concerned.
1000%
One of my favorites and gives me chills every time I hear it!!
Dolly is a legend, nobody can deny it whether country is your thing or not. Gotta love her
The movie is worth a watch, love her she's the classiest woman this side of the century
Merle Haggard's Working Man Blues is short but good as well.
The origin of this song is really interesting. You ought too look up how she wrote it. Those fingernails are for more than just plucking the strings of the guitar. She's is a 1 of a kind artist.
Yup.
Dolly's a gem.
And the quiver you hear in her voice is commonly referred to as "vibrato."
Dolly's is very distinct.
Dolly Parton wrote I Will always Love You and made 10million in royalties. Which is more than Whitney Houston made from singing it
Another great country artist that you might like is Johnny Cash. Ring of Fire is one of his biggest hits. He also sang a cover of Hurt (Nine Inch Nails) in 2002 shortly before he passed away-VERY powerful!
My favorite song of Dolly’s is “He’s Alive”. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
