    The Paltipus gravity system is excellent but very pricey. After trying the Waterdrop Gravity filter/straw, I sold. Its as good as the Paltipus w major versatility but the price is much more affordable. To me it blows away the Paltipus, Lifestraw and Sawyer away. Just trying to give peo a more affordable option. Thank you for the impt info on how to use them correctly. Gravity is best. Stay safe, Be Blessed.

    As always, great info Randy! Especially the basics - get water from up stream, not crystal clear, freezing considerations. Thanks Randy!

    I'm in field away from roads a lot with my job and carry a Sawyer Squeeze. I prefer it because I can put in inline on my camelbak tube, inline on a gravity system or I can screw it on top of a water bottle and drink straight from the bottle.

    Me and my son have always used the pump system, and they can fail, we are going to purchase the gravity flow this year, thanks for the video!!!!

      I have them all. I find gravity systems easier for large volumes of water.

    Thank you for this video, Randy. I was just wondering about this after another of your recent videos. You answer questions before they're even asked!

      Thanks. We get asked this question a lot. For us, we have a camera crew and usually one or two hunters, so getting volumes of water in short order, while keeping weight and size small, are big issues for us.
      Thanks for watching.

    As always very helpful and informative! We go through lots of bottles and bladder packs on our Colorado elk hunts. Many years ago I contracted Gerardi's" from stream water in VT while deer hunting and never drank from one again.

    Randy:
    Great video. Quick question: how often do you change filters or what indicates that you need to replace a filter? Thanks!

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most manufacturers have suggestions. It varies based on size of the filter, volume it has filtered, and how dirty the water has been that was filtered. I change it whenever it starts to slow down in the ability to filter at normal rate.

    Are you going to do more turkey hunts??

      Maybe next spring. I have some experts who want to teach me the ropes.

      Sweet, turkey hunting is really fun and a bit more easy than big game hunting (unless we're talking about the hunt you went on with your buddy) I'm looking forward to this upcoming season.

    In cold conditions how do you keep the filter from freezing up? I've always used a steripen or a pump because I've heard the gravity systems can freeze up...obviously this isn't an issue on spring bear hunts.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drain them every night. Blow into the tube and get as much water out as possible. Pumps can freezer up just as easily as gravity systems, if not cleared of water.

    With hose in the water when filling the basecamp dont you just contaminate your water via bacteria on the hose?

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If so, I've never had a problem in doing it that way. Worth thinking about, for sure.

    • @sdcb27
      @sdcb27 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do know if you drink from the hose even with filtered water you have a very high chance of contamination

    Hey Randy, I was thinking about doing some minor hiking(2-3 days) in the mountains of WV where I live. I was highly considering the SteriPen because it will probably only be myself and 1 other person. Do you have any experience with it? I know it doesn't do a lot of water at once, but I figured a liter or 2 at a time would be sufficient for just refilling a water bottle while on the go. Thoughts?

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have one, but I've never used it. We just have too much water volume to filter in order to use a Steripen.

    Randy, with using the gravity bladders, those filters eliminate the need for iodine and the like?

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct. I never use anything other than the gravity filter itself.

    Thanks for the info. Great video but I hunt mainly in NM and we don’t have a lot of streams or rivers like that. Are there any extra steps needed for filtering water out of dirt tanks or ponds, or is that not a reliable water source. One more thing when planning a backpack trip how do you plan your trip to know if there is water in the area. I know in NM maps show streams everywhere but when you get there no water running? Thanks for the info.

    Bring along a cut down 2 liter bottle. It's so flexible that you can scoop water up from a puddle of mouse pee if you absolutely had to. ;-)

  • @joeyz2115
    @joeyz2115 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Be sure to put filters away in freezing temps. Certain filter types are not okay with freezing and can become useless if so...

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. And drain completely.

  • @dmeyer2895

    How do these systems work when you have only man made tanks like in Arizona. These tend to be still scummy water, but is the only source around.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will filter the crud out that will make you sick, but the water will be as bad as anything you've ever had. I would not filter water our a dirt stock tank. I would find a different option.

    I know some kids who pee in that creek. Better double filter...

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I know some elk, deer, and fish that poop in that creek, also. Better triple filter.
