    Randy Newberg has a Colorado elk tag for this season and is planning his hunt by e-scouting. Working in his favor is the new release of 3D Maps from goHUNT. Having e-scouted for years and done seminars on it as well as previous videos, Randy illustrates how 3D changes the way he can e-scout.
    There are a couple tools in particular that are extremely helpful while trying to pinpoint areas where the elk may be depending on the season you are hunting. In this case his tag is for the post rut and he uses the elevation tool to his advantage to isolate the areas to focus on.
    After having general areas and elevation identified, Randy now needs to find the best absolute glassing knobs to be able to survey multiple sanctuary areas. With the help of 3D and the line tool, he is able to get a much better understanding of what he will be able to see from any given area.

    Using RMNP as an example is smart; it is closed to all hunting, so no one can steal your spot! LOL. Late summer/ early winter can change overnight in those parts & Elk will change elevation by 3500+ in a few hours, trust me! I lived just down the road (from RMNP) for the last 20 years ;)

    I have 3 monitors and I have Google Earth on one screen, OnX on one screen and now GoHunt on the third. They all have their strengths and I'm looking forward to my fall hunts. But the FREE Google Earth is still my best tool. But I have used that for years. Doing most of the things you are talking about here. GoHunt is making it easier though. Good stuff Randy I play with the GoHunt maps most every day. 👍

    I think that this is phenomenal and looks pretty easy to use without spending more time transferring waypoints and cross referencing between Google Earth (3D) and OnX Maps (a former long time partner) which is 2D and able to be used via a mobile as you know already. Mark Livesay of Treeline Pursuits (and his extremely thorough E-Scouting course) who was also at the Western Hunting Summit has said that Google Earth can do many of the things OnX can do with layers and such, but most people are not aware of that. Plus it is not as obvious and easy. With these GoHunt Maps it brings it all into one once they get the mobile version up and running soon, plus those really handy features that you have been talking about and they have been showing off on with the Line of Sight tool, the elevation bands and so much more for no added cost with streamline everything into a one stop scouting shop with the maps, the draw odds, Filter 2.0, unit breakdowns, and the extensive Strategy articles by Brady, Trail and the team. Oh and the Gear Shop which I still have 50 points for using Promo Code RANDY. Not sure yet what I want to use it on. Talk about value.
    I am not sure if those that are applying for the Free Trail will get access to the GoHunt Maps, but they should since it is part of being an INSIDER?
    Even though I didn't get to do the mule deer and pronghorn hunt in Wyoming this year because of many circumstances this addition will help me with that as well as any future elk hunts (have bought points in states like CO, WY, NV, etc..) I could imagine 3D would help me with scouting a unit to apply for pronghorn to see the terrain better so I can put a stalk on them easier than some flatter topography, especially if I were to get an archery tag. Let alone what you have mentioned about elk regardless of which of the 5 periods that they are in. One can definitely use the 12 part E-Scout series with a former partner and apply it to using these GoHunt maps to an even more effective rate with the 3D they offer.
    I hope that all your information from the mapping software will be easier to transfer than when you asked one of your younger employees to do the same when pulling them off the old Garmin GPS. Thanks for sharing I was hoping that you were going to do a video like this once I saw the release of the GoHunt Maps.

    Interesting comment on water in Colorado... local reports for the Uncompahgre National Forest south of Grand Junction, Delta, and Montrose indicate a severe drought this year - and locals suggest likely need to hunt "water holes" if you can find them.

    The 3D tools will be pretty great for out here in WA, just a shame its hard to predict where they would be in elevation given that its no higher than 7000 ft and West is just so densely packed with trees.... Cant spot anything from a distance unless your East.

    Last weekend at Rocky Mountian NP there were 45 elk at the West entrance gate(Grand lake) eating at 5pm. This is shown as your winter range.

    • @fortfly
      @fortfly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RMNP is an elk anomaly. If you were in Estes Park you would likely have seen even more elk eating grass on the lawn in front of the bank. These elk are not spooked by people in the least as they see thousands of tourists pretty much year-round. Randy was using RMNP as an example so as not to send a stampede of hunters into a unit that is actually huntable because he is considerate... (FYI, RMNP prohibits hunting)
      Randy knows what he is talking about when he so kindly shares his wisdom on the matter of elk and their behavior. You would be well advised to broaden your own knowledge before challenging him on his advice.
      To Randy, thanks for your thoughts on this new research tool. Invaluable insight as usual.

      Difference can be (and Randy pointed it out here), water sources differ and overall past weather. What was the previous winter, spring, summer like? That can change the elks elevation range a little from year to year, but like previously said, elk are elk and they're always generally doing the same thing, no matter where they live.

  • @TheWVgoodguy22

    Another idea that might be helpful to use GoHunt Maps along with the other INSIDER services as a research tool would be to have a link the the GoHunt Maps inside each Unit Breakdown right under the mapbox and above the quick tips. It could take someone to the center of the unit (perhaps in another tab) and they can check out the topography and other information the 3D Maps provides even quicker. Would be helpful for those of us that are coming from the East, midwest, Southeast, etc... that don't know the area that they are potentially applying for. To see if the unit is a place that that would work for them and they would be interested to apply for. I am just starting to dive into the Maps and I haven't found unit outlines on the GoHunt Maps, I am sure there is someplace to turn that on?

    Randy, What do I do with my OnX subscription? It was purchased as being a tool you recommended, not per se, but by having them as a sponsor. I feel as if the OnX users have been abandoned. I don’t think I am the only viewer to feel this way. It’s like you are telling us the old map system is now obsolete, this one is not.

    • @jesseekeren2291
      @jesseekeren2291 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think OnX was the best until this came out, and now this is the best, that’s why he’s going with this. It just comes down to the fact that something better came out. I’m not sure if he’s keeping OnX or not, but as for us, decide what you like best and go with it.
      OnX is still good to use in the field, so if you like it use a combo of that and google earth at home. I really like gohunts insider service, so if they combine maps into it that I can use in the field, it’s going to be great. I Would recommend you keep OnX this season, then switch to gohunt before next season if the in field mapping is good. Lots more value with the gohunt insider service.

      Randy, Thank you for providing me with the thread that clarified your position with GoHunt and OnX. I wish I had seen it earlier. Being a self employed health professional, I realize there are difficult decisions to be made. As a mentor once told me “it’s not whether your decision is right or wrong, the important thing is to make the decision. If you are wrong correct it. If you are right, continue,”. I am sure making the decision of which company to go with was tough, but you made the decision looking at all the angles. I certainly respect you for that. You have the hunter in mind, first and foremost, which in my opinion is the most important aspect. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Best regards, Glenn C. Hurley, Jr.

    I use the elevations band layers
    A little different
    I turn on all of the elevation band layers
    That I'm not going to hunt
    What is left over is what I plan on hunting
    And it's clear a veiw instead of colored
    Also I turn on private lands
    And then i know that the rest is public
    Crisp and clear free from a colored layer
    Laying on top of it
    Makes it way easier to see
    And eliminate a bunch of country really quickly
