I do some headphones that hold clear bass and one ear on one ear off so you get the processed and un amped raw at the same time while monitoring, it takes a few times to get used to but a very simple tecnique that brings great results.
+Stewart Brand i think he said to reduce gain on mic... im gonna try doing that and also use phaser for bleed noises and my mic shield i just got and see if that works also there are some mics that have a knob or switch for only capturing whats infornt of the mic like the akg p420 or p220 i think
@squibble94 I might do a more in depth tutorial, but the point is that we just put up a cardioid mic cranked up the speakers and went for vibe, even had the windows open. We ended up with a very usable vocal track. We did not do any special tricks. Its not right for everything, but I always recommend people try it if it makes the singer more comfortable.
Interesting, will have to try (if not for other, then for fun). In a year and a half with metallica (available here on youtube), it looks like the vocals for the black album were recorded with no headphones.
@NathanLee0921 This could work, but most people need some kind of pitch reference unless they have perfect pitch. You also run the risk of the vocal performance not being as connected to the tracks musically speaking, but there would be nothing technically wrong wit this. If you click the link to my Ronans Recording Show web site (in the description) I do a follow up episode to this video with more detail there.
@kingtoadius I did not do anything to get rid of the background music, I just used a direction mic pointed away from the speakers. Thanks for watching the videos. BTW only a few go on youtube. The rest are on RonansRecordingShow-dot-com
Great question with an easy answer. You do not put the new vocal in the monitors. If the singer really wants some vocal in the monitors, just make sure to use a directional mic to reject it, just like in concert.
1) Try it without the reflection filter 2) make sure there is not too much low end in the mix you are sending to the speakers 3) Make sure the singer is close to the mic. I did not do anything special when recording the singer in this video. Let me know how it works out.
Hello from London! Im working with a singer who cannot hit pitch wearing headphones so I was searching the net and found this Video. I went out and bought the Shure SM7B after hearing how little background bleed it had when U solo'ed the vox but when I got home + started recording (approximately 3 meters away from the monitors and also using a reflection filter) u still can hear loads of bleed. Was there anything else U did to the file to get that near zero bleed any tips would be appreciated.
hi, just subscribed :) .... in the sections between phrases or during solos, breaks ecc, do you cut the vocal track or maybe automate the volume to mute during non-singing sections/between phrases to minimise bleed?
Honestly the bleed is usually not too big of a problem either way, but I will usually mute it during solos and such, but will leave it in between lyrics.
No headphones! Hey maybe this will help me...Question: I tracked a vocal where I was off tuned a few places, I taught my hearing was going bad or my signing, but when I play the guitar and record without headphones everything is ok, i'm on it..Why is that? Is the sound of the music too loud or low or the vocals in the headphone too loud or low..What is the best way to do this..? Thanks
+steven jo Also, there is a latency problem when recording on headphones (if you don't have direct monitoring). What that means is that, when you sing, the vocals you hear in your headphones are always late (not in real time) so you're actually trying to hit a tune of your own vocals in real time... and that leads to frustration and out of tune vocals. You're chasing your own tale.

So where are the tips?

I believe the Mic would almost guaranteed to pick up the music and be a faint sound of it in the vocal track....puzzled

@davidjdriver No.Just cranked them up and went for it.

@snapascrew Its just the rejection of the mic.
@RonansRecordingShow I find them both pretty awesome so I don't know what you're talking about :D
How do you record the vocals without getting feedback from the monitors ?
Great question with an easy answer. You do not put the new vocal in the monitors. If the singer really wants some vocal in the monitors, just make sure to use a directional mic to reject it, just like in concert.
So a Cardioid facing absorbers to reduce spill and then played through your studio speakers? fair enough
If you mean the mixer, it is a Raindirk Symphony
1) Try it without the reflection filter
2) make sure there is not too much low end in the mix you are sending to the speakers
3) Make sure the singer is close to the mic.

@RonansRecordingShow Anyways, just wanted to ask if you have or are intending to make videos more for post-production mixing/editing?
So when is it okay to record video without headphones?
very interesting. I like your tutorials, thanks a lot.
to get rid of that background music in the mic, would you flip the signal after recording? Thanks for these videos, i think i've watched every one!
@RonansRecordingShow thanks for the quick reply, after i asked this question i went to the website and saw the other videos... ahah sorry!
Awesome! I'm trying a few things to feel MORE comfortable recording vocals. Maybe I'll check this out! Mahalos brotha! Aloha
How does the Mic not record the music along with the vocals
Cant you put the speakers out of phase. Or out of phase with mic? To reduce bleed.
There is a trick where you invert the phase of one speaker to reduce bleed. I have another video about that technique.

A lot of people sing in tune better without headphones. It is just a more natural way of hearing ourselves.
+steven jo Also, there is a latency problem when recording on headphones (if you don't have direct monitoring). @kingtoadius thanks Ronan!
Do you play in Lamb of God?
No, but I used to live in Richmond..
Cool Ronan! Great Video
I didn't understand, how he do?
did you throw the 2 monitors out of phase during tracking or is that just the regular rejection of the cardioid pattern?
I'm moving... I'm going away... 😎🔥
Well that did not cover any tip???
@DonQuichotteLiberia Thanks Don.
Interesting. I never tried earphones.
what sort of mix is that?
My video
still sounded like crap even with the music...Like the shure mic though.
TheWavelengthStudio Oh well, thanks for checking the video out anyway.
@drumgroovy But sadly with the worst traits of each ;-)
You kinda look like a cross between Rob Zombie and Zach Galifianakis. Not relevant but just wanted to get it off my chest lol
when you sing shit like that yeah why not lol
