- Let’s paint abstract alcohol ink jellyfish! I show and explain, step by step, how I made this painting using Kielty Inks, their layering solution (to protect parts of the painting I didn’t want at risk), a couple of Copic markers and a Posca brush marker.

To seal an alcohol ink piece I use a museum quality spray by Krylon: Kamar Varnish. Unlike most spray varnishes and acrylic sprays, it will not react with the alcohol inks.

AFTER using Kamar, you may choose to add a layer of UV protection to help with possible fading down the line : amzn.to/2JisymO
If done on something paper thin like photo paper, Duralar, or Yupo, the piece can be framed under glass or acrylic without being sprayed. Avoid placing alcohol ink work where it will be exposed to direct sunlight however. Though Kielty Inks are less vulnerable, some inks can fade in the sun... eventually.

Watching you and the beautiful things you create makes me believe that I, too, can paint in this way. One of my creative blocks is that while I generally have an idea of what I want my end result to be, knowing where to start is often hard for me to fathom. I've been working with a different art medium for a little while (and often use alcohol inks), and it has been helping me to learn this concept, and watching you and your process helps me as well. (Plus I just love your work! It's so ethereal. I love the translucency. It's my favorite "color" to work with in polymer clay, too). Thank you, and be well!

One day I will get the Kelty Inks, but because I am in Oz, with postage it’s not worth just buying that so I need to save up for inks too.....I did a shopping basket and it was like $500 .....might be a while till I get just some inks and the solution, so hard to choose the best colours to get ! They are all so pretty... ! I might try this in blue and pinks. 😍😍😍😘xo

I was at a Disney park a few years back and they had jellyfish, I don't know if it was the lighting but the jellyfish tops were two different colors of lavender and the bottom half was in this light green and blue. It was awesome. They changed colors everytime they moved. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us.

I love your videos! I do have a question about the Kielty layering solution: Am I remembering correctly that there was a problem with the solution when it got really cold during shipment? I live in Alaska so obviously this is a concern. Am I remembering this correctly, and was the owner/chemist able to solve this problem? I'm excited at the prospect of trying their line of products. First of all thank you so much for your kind comments! 😊💕 There HAD been a problem with the Retarding Solution having been exposed to freezing temperatures... not the Layering Solution luckily. The issue with the RS was corrected by the chemist/inventor AND he now checks everything he makes for extreme cold tolerance 😁. You can order anything without fear! I wish you endless fun with it all.😘

Maybe one time I will try them too. At the moment i‘m super happy with acrylic pouring. Finally I managed to pour without any cells... yay. I'm so hooked on alcohol inks! Your jellyfish are so magical! Right now, I'm in the process of painting some lampshades. I've experimented with various fabric paints, but they are all opaque. I started experimenting with alcohol inks and they are really wonderful for painting on fabric, but VERY uncontrollable. The light shining through them is wonderful at night and I'm adding some sparkle with a thin layer of glittery fabric paint in some places. I know you pretty much stick to nonporous surfaces, but fabric is a whole new challenge and I'd love some guidance on how to control the inks on fabric. Wetting it first with alcohol minimizes spreading while putting the ink down and then saturating with alcohol and moving it (somewhat) with a brush makes it blend beautifully. I used to do silk painting and we used resists on the fabric to keep the paints from blending along boundaries. Just wondering where to go with this....
I’m new to alcohol inks and I see that this tutorial was published 2 years ago! I’m not able to find Kielty LAYERING solution from the links below. Is this still the recommended product? If so, any tips on where I can find it? If not, is there another tool that accomplishes the same task?

Linda Frier my friend ordered them from Ireland. I think that is where they are from. She got the whole set. They sure are neat! She said she got a pretty good deal getting the whole set.

Holy cow! I went to purchase the layering solution, it's twenty euros for the shipping alone. Yikes, that sadly puts it out of my budget.

Thank you so much Geri! Once the layering solution dries it is ABSOLUTELY invisible… You would never know it was there! It’s literally as if water had a evaporated. It doesn’t add a shine or any thickness to your piece. 😊💕

Love so much about this! The dimensions you brought out are amazing! And the colors are so gorgeous. I love to watch how that kilty layering soliton works! There’s a restaurant near me which has a big round tall tank of jellyfish in the center of the room. And they light it so that they have vibrant colors. You’re picture reminds me so much of those!
