    is that what you did with your thumb nail? LOL. While I was watching the video it occured to me , "what if you don't have rubbing alcohol and you do have some VODKA ??? Just thinking what else would work. I AM A NEW SUBBIE. LOVE YOUR VOICE AND SIMPLE WAY OF TEACHING ... YOU GO !!! P.S. what if anything, do you use to "seal " the work and is it permanent??? Thanks so much.

    • @MyriamsNature
      @MyriamsNature  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Zulma 😊! My thumbnail is an acrylic skin glued to my nail. Here is a video tutorial I made explaining how I do it : th-cam.com/video/2NX3wHhCzDg/w-d-xo.html
      I never thought about vodka for alcohol inks, but my guess is that if the proof is high enough it might just work 😁! Though some people manage to work with 70% isopropyl alcohol, the reality is that 91% or 99% is better. Lower percentages (e.g. 70%, and worse yet 50%) are higher in water content... alcohol inks don’t love water. High water content alcohols cause the inks to break up in a grainy way (almost as if they are curdling).
      To seal alcohol ink work the best/safest spray is Kamar Varnish... it does not reactivate the inks (make them bleed or move) as other varnishes can. Once you’ve sealed with Kamar, you may choose to add a layer of a UV protecting spray as well. Here is a link for Kamar : amzn.to/2Evyv9N
      I hope that all helps a bit. 😊💕

    Myriam, omg, where do I start ?? There is so much information on so many levels. I really enjoyed watching the primary colors creating secondaries and a few tertiaries. That in itself is a full video. Love this technique. You explain everything anyone could possibly ask. I enjoy working with slightly tinted alcohol. Love the one you made here a bit more than the other. And then you show how you set up your workspace. Love the side by side comparison. They are both Beautiful !

Don't ever quit experimenting and being excited and sharing - it is wonderful to watch and listen and learn. This might be fun to make a series then tape them to a sunny window for sun catchers. MYriam... I have to thank you... it is because of YOUR videos that I tried AI and fell in love with this medium! I was looking to get back into and rebuild my art world after a devastating fire destroyed everything we had... I wanted to do something I had never done before, something fun, theraputic, and kind of uncontrollable to help me through the affects of going through the fire. And I found it! I have now done a handful of pieces and still learning how AIs work and their amusing quirkiness! And now I'm definitely going to be trying THIS way out as well!! But I must tell you that each time I do a new piece I hear your voice in my mind and I laugh out loud with you.!! Ha ha ha ha! So thank you, MYriam, thank you for being there when I was looking and thank you for being with me with each piece I do... I just love you.

    I like them both but the more vibrant/saturated one is my fav. Very cool! I found a different way to do this by dropping ink on the paper then taking an air brush and moving it in a particular direction. The problem with that method is that the base would have a wider bulb on it and then go to a point. Your method is actually what I was aiming for initially. You were reading my mind!

    Hi Myriam, can this the technique be used on glass? I'm looking for a way to do a two sided piece on glass. So that both sides show an attractive image. These Inks just are amazingly radiant and transparent, and I thought it might be a good approach to my idea of a two sided piece.? I'd appreciate your thoughts. You're very inspiring with your good humour and positive approach.

    • @MyriamsNature
      @MyriamsNature  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Robert! This technique can definitely be done on glass but you’ll need to take these slightly different steps: 1) You’ll want to thin your inks much less or they won’t show up enough on a clear surface and 2) Instead of using straight alcohol to thin your inks, use a mix of at least 50% Claro Extender or Alcohol Blending Solution and 50% Isopropyl Alcohol. (Ounce for ounce, Jacquard’s Piñata Claro Extender is less expensive than Ranger’s blending solution) [ Piñata Claro Extender : amzn.to/2J87R9S (4 oz. bottle) ]
      If you can afford to increase the amount of Claro in your mix that would be even better. Alcohol inks have a binder built in that permit them to “stick” to non-porous surfaces... using alcohol breaks that down. Claro returns that binding agent without adding color. The reason I don’t need to use that when working on something like Dura-Lar is because the Duralar has a coating that grabs onto ink even though it’s mainly non-porous.
      Thank you so much for your kind words. I hope this helps a bit. 😊

    • @robert2708
      @robert2708 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that, it's very helpful! I have the blender already so I just need to wait for the inks from the big 'A'.

      Great question and wonderful advice. I am starting a faux stained glass picture frame piece and will use this technique for a water effect. It will be a very large project with liquid leading to separate the colours as it is based on a painting of a Blue Heron I did. It will be hanging in my bay window to catch the light and provide privacy. Than you for the tips and a huge Bravo for your creativity and talents!

  • @jonaeflure
    @jonaeflure 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi Myriam! How fun! I'm always amazed when I see how vibrant these inks are. Did you have your blowdryer on hi, med, or low? Is there a way to seal or add a permanent protective layer over inks? Side note...I'll be mailing the package this Wednesday ♡

    • @MyriamsNature
      @MyriamsNature  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Miss Janet! It’s amazing to me how vibrant they are even when they’ve been thinned down to this degree. The blow dryer are used has two settings… I had it on the lower setting because the higher setting blows too fast and too hard for me on a smaller piece. I use the higher setting if I want to dry something quickly or work on a larger surface and the ink has to travel further.
      If you’re painting on something like Dura-Lar or other paperthin surface, you really don’t need to seal it because you can just frame it under glass. If you are using a surface that will be exposed to the air and being touched etc., then I would use Kamar Varnish spray by Krylon. It gives a glossy finish. The extra wonderful thing about this spray is that it is the only varnish I have ever found (and I’ve tried a LOT!) which has no bleeding impact on alcohol inks. It will not cause the inks to move in any way… Even the finest alcohol ink details are preserved no matter how much you spray on. Here is a link: amzn.to/2Evyv9N
      I am super excited to see what you send! Also, it was extra lovely to see your new avatar! You are gorgeous! 😘💕😊 Thank you so much for being you!

    I did want to ask...do you think or know if you can Resin over this once dry to give it that strong/thick and glass look & maybe attach a beautiful chain or something to hang it by allowing it to look like stained glass(not in direct sun of course) but allowing all the natural light to show the beauty without hiding in a frame?? Newbie here!! 💜💜 all your videos, make my days brighter!!😘 Thx in advance for answering my questions!!

      Hi Diane! I love the idea of the stained glass look. Direct sun could eventually fade some alcohol inks… Not all, but some for sure. What I would do to ensure that the resin doesn’t “move“ the inks or cause them to bleed, is to seal your piece with Kamar varnish first.
      When my alcohol ink paintings dry, if they won’t be framed under glass and I want to seal them, I spray them with Kamar. It’s a crystal clear, museum-quality varnish designed for varying mediums including acrylics, oils and watercolors.
      Once the Kamar dries (and doesn’t take long) you are safe to resin without fear. In a case like this, think of the Kamar varnish as a primer before doing the resin later. I hope that helps a bit. 😊💕

    This is Joanne in Price utah. I did enjoy your work. The very first time I ever used the alcohol inks was Dec 2021. I did end up using it for our family Christmas cards. Oh my gosh I had so much fun . Now you need to understand that my husband n family are tongans from Hawaii. So after i did my 🎨 I just had to show my husband what I had accomplished. He liked it so much that he requested that I use it for the family Christmas cards. So I did. I am fairly new at making cards as well. But all in all we were both very pleased with the outcome of our Christmas card delight. When I did my first successful art with alcohol inks I did use

Some time ago, I asked several friends to give me their 4 favorite colors in order so i could use for some as yet undefined crafting projects. This demo is perfect for allowing me to make something I know each of them will find attractive because of those favorites having been shared. Thanks!!

    Hi Myriam, This is gorgeous. I love them both. In fact I can't decide which I like better. Up close the first (less dense) one looked totally cool. I tend to go for a LOT of color, so I would likely choose the 2nd painting to hang on my wall. Both definitely have merits. I think I'd use the 1st less saturated painting on a card as the viewer would be able to see the "fingers" up close. Love your work and the way you "fix" certain areas of your ink paintings. JaneXOXO

    You, dear lady, have created an ink addict. After watching your ink and tile video I went out and bought 3 bottles of ink and a couple of tiles, and then three more bottles of ink and then three more bottles of ink..........you get the picture. I've been playing and trying inks on tile, glass, photo paper and just bought some small Yupo papers. Ink on tiles is great fun and the best part is, if it doesn't work out just alcohol it away. I even inked the glass on my future pendant lights. I haven't attempted anything artistic in my life but you fired me up and now I'm going to go grab my hairdryer. Thank you greatly for teaching me what fun is again..

    Watching you create these works of art reminds me of years ago watching Bob Ross paint his pictures on tv. He made it look like it was so easy as you do with this technique. I KNOW it’s not and has taken years of working with alcohol inks to get you to this point. Oh I can create something but I’m not ready to hang it in my home, maybe someday but not without a lot of practice. Thanks for giving me the inspiration to keep at it Myriam!

    Beautiful. It's hard to choose between them, though I do have a slight preference for the second, more colourful one. I do like the slightly variant tendrils in the first one though - it makes me think of seaweed.
    I can't help but wonder what would happen if one tried something similar with acrylic pouring. I don't mean just manipulating the already-poured paint with a hairdryer (fun though that is) but to see what would happen if one used the hairdryer while the paint was being poured onto the canvas. A big mess all over the room, I expect!

    • @MyriamsNature
      @MyriamsNature  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! The brighter one is the overwhelming favorite! It’s so funny… That’s not what I had predicted. I was actually pleasantly surprised.
      Now you must know that this nutty girl tried it with the paint!! Like half an hour after figuring it out with the inks. 😄 I would’ve tried with resin too if that wasn’t such a sticky nightmare. 🤣
      It was not the same experience at all with paint.... much much messier!! It just went flying more than staying on the canvas but of course I’m going to figure it out and make a video!! 😂😊😊

    Hi Myriam, I just love to listen to you explain things. Your voice is comforting and your laughter is happy, even when you are laughing at yourself. So when I found you did alcohol inks also I jumped on your sight. I have not been doing inks but for a week or two (a not everyday) so it really is all new. I started with your introduction video and now this one. I preference the original one because I could imagine it as a background for hiding fish, but both were delightful. Thank you for what you do!

    I am very new to alcohol ink and have been watching TH-cam to find what is "possible" to use them for. So far I am only very good at letting them out of the bottle and run anywhere they take a mind to. Seeing you show such control gives me hope. I have enjoyed every minute I spend with you and learnt heaps. I love the brighter colours of picture 2 and the movement and depth in the 1st picture. May I ask an unrelated question? (love that you can't say no, but ignore and do not answer if you prefer) When you use alcohol inks on glass do you need to seal it with something to make it permanent? I watched the Kielty video prior to this and though the stuff you put on the mountains would be ideal. Is there a need and if so what should I use? Thanks for the videos I will be watching them all.

    Hi Myriam, I'm a newbie, bought supplies but haven't used them yet. My challenge is that I want to use these techniques on fabric (one video said to put gesso down on porous items to get the alcohol inks to work?) I just put gesso on a fabric postcard that I want to attempt. I also make 'art envelopes' from glossy calendars and magazine pages, thought that they might not be as porous as regular paper, so I put gesso on one just a few minutes ago, waiting for it to dry and thinking of adding another coat to the fabric and the envelope before trying the inks. Do you have any hints, tips or suggestions for me, or direct me to one of your videos that might help me out? thank YOU

    So, looking into the sciency part of alcohol, isopropyl alcohol is cooler than water, due to slower moving molecules. The warmer they get, the more fluid the alcohol, and alcohol inks move, providing more fluid movement. If you set your hair dryer on the cool setting, it will slow down the movement of your ink spray.

Everything is so much fun with alcohol inks. You are fantastic and as you said you can never go wrong with anything.
