There have been terrible engines throughout all eras -- the engines used in cars between the 1920s and 1960s wouldn't reach anywhere near the types of milages cars do today without several rebuilds. That said, modern engines of this century are in my opinion inferior to the reliable workhorses produced throughout the '90s. It's not as clear-cut as 'new vs. old'.
