In this episode on Tekniq, let us indulge into the extraordinary display of steam powered 4 wheel wagons in the United Kingdom and the behind the scenes of operating them.
When I was a child, today I am 65 years old, in my grandfather's road company in Italy there were still two steam rollers. I remember the ritual of turning on and maintaining pressure on the boiler. In the evening there was a fire attendant until dinner time who at 4 in the morning would start feeding the boiler again to be ready to start after 5. In Italy coal was very expensive and the rollers were fueled with pressed bricks of coal waste. During the winter some workers worked to make tiles with a hand press for the summer jobs.I feel like I'm telling a story from 200 years ago but if I've seen it it's not more than 60 years ago.....
@@deborahchesser7375 I don't think it was much different than traveling in the summer in a Fiat 682 with the diesel engine between the seats in the italian summer 🤣
These were technically advanced,in their day, some having a top speed.of 60mph.They full torque from zero revs character of the steam engine, made for huge pulling power.
Older ones went to 50 MPH or so, these were built to compete with petrol lorries/trucks in the 1920s. This model was launched in 1928 but Sentinel kept making these monsters into the 1930s! You'd have to be nuts, of course, to go that fast... and know all the nearest watering holes.
We our reserves of coal a good idea at the time. I would call that starting more like getting up steam. I really enjoy a steam rally some of the best of British engineering. Nice to see the electrical system.
There was a road repair contractor in the 1970's in the county of Fflint in the UK was looking for a number of these vehicles to use as tar sprayers. He thought they were the best possible vehicle for the job - the steam from the boiler kept the tar liquid and supplied pressure for spraying, whilst the regulator could be set to creep up any gradient at a steady 2 mph. Doing that trick with a diesel lorry simply destroyed the clutch, a feature you wouldn't find on a Sentinel. Unfortunately I neither know how he fared in his quest to acquire more, nor do I know what became of the lorries he had.
I had the sheer good fortune to speak to someone at a steam festival, this summer, who had a couple of steam tractors on show. He told me about his lorry and one thing I remember is that it was kept lit, so cold starting was probably a rare enough occurrence. But that practice was not reserved for steam. In the 1990s, diesel electric locomotives used to be run into sidings and left running overnight, to eliminate the need for cold starting in the small hours.
If the sidings were on a slope, sometimes it was necessary to maintain pressure in the braking system. If the train was coupled, this could save almost an hour, winding the mechanical brake on and off each carriage.
I think it's cool just for display, even though a lot of the work was left in the great-great-grandparents' time, who knows in the future if the fuel will run out we'll go back to steam...
Dont worry about fuel running out before that happens the government will permanently lockdown the world and remove all freedom to travel so you wont need vehicles anyway.

When we look at the vehicles of today's age, it may seem very funny to some, but if these vehicles had not been produced, it would not have been possible to reach the current level, so the things that were made in difficult conditions with limited opportunities and knowledge at that time are very valuable.
Hey honey can you start up the car overnight, I got to go to work in the morning 😂😂😂
Not funny at all
This is like amazing invention thus days

@@Urforma Pretty crappy joke to be honest.
She's beautiful real engineering and craftsmanship.
Gives a whole new meaning to "warming " up the vehicle in the morning. 😅

This is a Sentinel DG4 steam wagon built in 1931 in Shrewsbury, where the Morris company is also located.
Sentinel prime?
1931!? I was expecting 1910 at the latest.

Yes, though that's the model that replaced the one shown.

Helluva starting procedure. Instructions had to be lengthy. 😊 beginning of the industrial age was scary. I get that now.
Definitely not weird - and I'm beginning to think 'weird' just means 'not seen in the US'.
