I found myself in a similar situation at 48 . I hunted out an employer in a large city where there was lots of construction work, who was prepared to take me on as an apprentice.....then lived in a flat for 4 years.....renting a single room and living with 7 others while I did my training. I lived on Tuna, Oates, Bananas, Frozen fish fillets and spinach. I was earning $16 an hour.
I got qualified as an electrician, then after 3 more years experience became self employed. I worked hard and built a new home away from the expensive cities. I took pleasure in sunsets and beaches and rivers and forests. I developed a wonderful sense of achievement this way and through tenaciousness I found happiness and contentment.
You can do this. My pathway is only one of many. Find the way through. Do not let your body slacken or rest until you do. Never give up. Be sparten to achieve your goals.Write down your plans and revisit them often. Modify them if need be.
Identify the essential and eliminate the rest.
Be strong. Be staunch. Be unapologetic for doing what you need to do. Good luck.

I cried this is me, and I hold no degrees. No one can imagine how you feel. I worked hard had a business owned a townhome and lost it all. I hang on to God, faith and hope. I have worked amazon flex , insta cart, uber and lyft. I still do hair at least once a week and freelance when I can. I totally get it. I pray for you and myself and the plight of all others in this struggle,peace and blessings

Thank you for your courage. I am in exactly the same boat. MBA, broke, living in my son's basement, hiding for the most part while most of my online applications disappear. I've finally taken a job at Home Depot and start tomorrow. I'm hungry and only go up and take food when no one is around because even family feels resentful when you end up like this. Only I don't want to "end up" like this. I want to feel good again.
Claire Collins .....I've read so many comments just like yours. I have the degree, great accomplishments including self employed. Yet virtually never got an interview. Its obvious my resume tells my approximate age. Its just a big game of political correctness baloney. I have worked circles around the average employees for years. It's beyond crazy now with employers and I have learned to laugh more at the insanity that we are being told. It's mostly half truths and outright lies. F 'em.
If you have car it access to car then get to a church or generic food bank. They are out there. Be proud if home Depot job, and save what you can to start own online business ,(,no storefront ). Stay healthy.

Enjoy your time at Home Depot - try to be the cheerful one that brightens people's days! God will help you to be this person - how do I know? - because I spend a lot of time at home 'moping' and thinking negatively, and then at work, in my low-grade job, I somehow manage (most of the time) to be a quite cheerful person, with the customers at least - and it's not fake, so that's why I think it's some sort of miracle, but also (and in combination with), it's the fact that I have become able to be cheered up by the gift of human interaction, which is in itself a miracle, because I'm generally an introvert.
You are supposed to feel badly because you've lost a lot! Would like to suggest that you try reinventing yourself! !st get interested in something besides your MBA, then try to link the two together! Try! Try again! Get interested again! Try again! Try! It works & it did work for me! I put a 'spin' on my education (Took 4 years.)
Wow, finally - a REAL TED talk. Not idealistic, “abstract” success discussions or puff pieces; but a real discussion of a real situation that lots of people find themselves in. This is the kind of TED talks we need more of.
Seriously, they usually say, just make more money, save more money, invest some and stop going out to eat!
She is so right on. I have been experiencing this since my 40s. Everyone said that I would get a job. Now at 55, I am this video. When I got out of college, companies were filled with people of all ages. Now everyone is no older than 30 and they look at me as if I'm from another planet and have no intention of ever hiring me.
You are not the only one. I remember the days when I was considered a valued employee because of my skills. Now that I am 53 potential employers basically treat me as I do not exist.
The struggle is real...55...masters degree...retirement no where in sight...lost job 4 years ago...starting a newer job with greater salary but gonna hate the job...

Just finished my nurse practitioner program, still too broke to take my certification test, furnishing license. I am working on my teaching certificate. Stopped telling people what I am doing because I do not like to hear the comments. I have learned to silently work on my goal(s). I have truly enjoyed your talk!

Wish I could give you the money to get your license. I’m a nursing student. Unemployed. Have 5 weeks left to collect unemployment, after that I just don’t know. I’m also facing possible eviction. Credit cards are maxed and owe bills all around. It’s really hard. I really have to trust God or this would be unbearable.

I'm 58 in a similarly bleak situation. I can't look ahead even one day or anxiety rushes in. I had to watch this. Because when anxiety and depression creep in planning a strategy isn't in the equation. She is still able to think clearly and intelligently. She is on top of her situation. Thank God she is up there illuminating this crisis.

Aw, Toni (I'm Toni, too 💙), keep putting one foot in front of the other. It's all we can do in this life. My grandparents (products of the Depression) literally never had two nickles to rub together. Retirement? They couldn't even afford health care. And yet my grandpa lived to 74 and my grandma to 82, always with SOME roof over their heads and food to eat daily. I read an article recently and thought it was such a fantastic idea. A group of seniors (women) pooled their resources and lived together like college sisters! They support each other and are loving their lives united.
When you are unemployed, long term, and the money runs out, you find that there these is no where you can be. Every place of refuge and rest costs money. An apartment, a car, even a seat at Starbucks cost something. You begin to feel like you have no place in the world and that was the hardest thing for me.
You are right. Going through it right now for many years and not afraid to tell it. I was before but been chronically unemployed and underemployed as a single parent, lack of support from family or friends will make life bleak. I persevered through some rough tides but I am highly gifted intellectually with a Master's degree and have had to learn to glean on what I know about myself (self-knowledge). I had to revisit what I loved to do, hobbies, interests because one thing that God gave many of us is creativity and an active imagination. People want to focus on money BUT...what happens when we go to a cash-less society or barcode bioengineering like the supermarkets? Money won't be available to get you what you need or want then. Helping one another in distress will win out because we could be at some point be on that OTHER end of life. I have felt like this many times, and I remember where I come from so I won't be indifferent or apathetic to others. Thank you for sharing.

I am watching this on my phone, and a bill collector literally called and interupted my viewing. The struggle is real! I am not a boomer, and no where near retirement age, but this talk spoke to me. Many of my peers have found the same unfortunate market place. The cost of living keeps sky rocketing, but hiring and salaries remain stagnant. I couldn't even afford to complete my degree and have been doing "bridge work" ever since. Saving for school is nearly impossible, especially when the money you already borrowed is demanding to be paid back. As difficult as it was to hear, your message encouraged me.

Look at Dave Ramsey on TH-cam. His way is different but it helps put things into perspective so you can live well. Helps pull back the curtain on consumerism. We are programmed to be broke. We have to change our thinking about money, time and education. They are all connected.

Most folks over 50 are going through this, and men over 45 are vulnerable to it happening too. It happened to me at 50, thankfully I have a clinical license and could go to work for myself. If you're younger, PREPARE TO WORK FOR YOURSELF because that's what it's going to be by the time you're 50, especially if you're male.
I'm a trucker till the end. Like my co driver who will soon be 70yrs.

Interesting because my generation , millennials, are being shitted on for wanting to innovate and become entrepreneurs. We don't want to work for anyone else, but yet are being called lazy bums for this thought process.

Yes. I've deprogrammed myself away from consumerism. It saves you a ton!
That is at the heart of the matter. People look for jobs so they can spend more. And there are talks about Minimalism on Ted. Most people are brainwashed and cannot stop spending! Everything I own can fit into the trunk of a car. And, I still need to get rid of things.
I go to goodwill and buy a new blouse when one falls apart
I have been doing he same for the past few years. It really does save you a lot of money. I am focusing on investing and learning to build a sustaining business.
I agree that you can train yourself not purchase every shiny thing you see and re-evaluate your need to keep up with whomever, but even while living frugally, life is far more expensive for some. I'm not and have never been a person who collects things. With the exception of the things in my kitchen cupboard downstairs, everything I own is in my room, which is in a large house that I share with anywhere from 5 to 13 other people depending on the day. I live on the cheap and do not mind it all. I didn't think twice about working multiple jobs and for years, up to three different shifts a day. I got myself not only out of debt, but built up a decent 401K and secondary savings.
A car accident can change all of that. I can live on the cheap to avoid consumerism, except consumerism has infected the medical industry that keeps me alive. The anti-seizure medication that prevents the debilitating and potentially fatal seizures costs more than my rent [which is low for the city in which I live.] Do you have any idea how much 24 hours in ICU costs? An MRI? An EEG? Or 3 days in ICU because you had to stretch your meds due to lack of money because you are unemployed and benefits were delayed?
In the end, I was ahead of the game by not adhering to a consumerist mentality. And, in the end, it has made little difference. I'm lucky to have been hired for a good job that has very generous medical benefits. Benefits that this admin is determined to abolish. This is done in the interest of "fiduciary responsibility" to stakeholders.
Let's skip being unemployed, being homeless; please tell me how to deprogram myself away from my own death sentence.

I've gotten jobs by making myself look younger, claiming I graduated college 6 years ago and not 20 years ago. When I don't lie about my age, I claim I worked at a school that closed in 2011, so they can't check. It always works, because younger bosses are youth-obsessed, they don't want anyone more qualified than themselves. It's one of the reasons why so many businesses fail. They go for young people who don't know how to work.

I struggle everyday wondering where do I fit in and what does God want me to do.
Eve Jones keep praying, asking God to lead you and guide you and have patience in the waiting. Think about your strengths and how you might use them to help others, (for money or not). Often there is great return for helping someone - just because we can. Trust Him for daily provision and know that our financial standing (whether we have money or don't have money) isn't an indication of how much we are valued.
I have a lot of debt and don't know what the future holds for me as I age and my health deteriorates but I trust in him daily and consider myself wealthy in spiritual terms. I know God loves me. I have family and friends who love me and we are all in it together. I have very little in financial terms but if I think about all that I do have (especially my relationships), then I know I have what I need (for today) and I am grateful. I am very grateful because although I don't have a husband, or anyone I can rely on financial, I am rich in my relationships.
I do believe we have, and will have what we need to accomplish our life purposes. Be grateful, be humble, be confident of who you have been created to be, and be at peace. Try to focus on loving God and loving others at Christ loves us and you will find your way. Look around you and find things to be grateful for right now, cultivate a thankful heart. Choose to 'live in that place'. Choose to 'be cheerful'. Choose to 'be happy'. I'm preaching to myself here!

You are not alone! This struggle grips many by the heart strings! Listen to your inner voice, and ask GOD for wisdom, guidance, inner peace (the turmoil alone will suffocate you), and the courage and strength to keep going until you find out what your next path will be. Hang in there! I do believe there's a light at the end, even if it's your own personal resolve that makes you content and "ok with yourself", and the choices that you make.

Just turned 59 with anxiety, depression, unemployed , can't find work, and 'Faking Normal' every darn day. I have a lot to offer the world but the world turns their back on me constantly. I'm lost, broke and don't know what to do. Something has to give. I never dreamed that I would be living my life this way at this age.

You have one of the most useful certifications. Yeah, it's a ton of work, but there's no short cuts to anywhere worth going. Keep your head up and keep working hard.
Also, try lowering your expectations and downsizing. Low expectations are the key to happiness. Think about it.

I've been living this for the last TEN YEARS. My oldest child is now supporting me. I am 68 so much older than you. I am faking it all the time.
My husband died almost 1800 days ago (5) years unexpectantly after a movie and dinner. Gave up my business, moved multiple times and lost 7 more important family members. I'm 51 with a 3 day notice and $6. to my name. THE STRUGGLE IS VERY REAL!
buy a multi unit property if you can afford it. Rent out a studio to start. It seems like it would be safe. I'm going to try to get my property age-restricted so I get chill people and hopefully their kids/grandkids will not wreck the place. if not, try babysitting. I did that and later had a home day care and then worked for my day care mother in retail. A guy on a reality show named Shannon Raddler is doing well as a pharm sales rep and tells everyone keep working and looking for work and eventually the money will come. He' s an African Amercan guy and he's on twitter

When I got my first job, I was already thinking of retirement. How financially comfortable I wanted to be when I retired. So I identified those things that consumed the most money in people's lives: mortgage, eating out, expensive clothes, car loan, student loans, etc.
I lived a meager life over 6yrs. In that time, I paid off my morgage, paid cash for a decent car, and paid off my students loans. Now I no longer fear the future. Now I can live a decent life now on as little as $500/month. The same lifestyle would cost someone else at least, $3,000/month in my area.
Be wise in your early years. Save. Pay off your mortgage. Pay cash for your car. Get rid of any long term loans. Once you sacrifice and do that, your net worth would rise rapidly.
Most importantly, always live within your means. Don't show off wealth you don't have, just to keep up with the Jones'.
Wow a brotha is inspired. This lady is highly educated and had a career and business's. But now life has changed and she's older and not making money she used to make but she wrote a book telling her story. So her telling her story about how she started over at 55 is such a motivation to a person in their 30's

This is me, but I'm a Londoner who lives in Germany, aged 55, widowed, inherited debts, and just lost my job of 5 and half years to a younger person (friend of the boss). I have no degree (long story), and no other support. I live in a 2 roomed apartment and have become depressed and worried. There should be more support for people like us - not just in the U.S. but everywhere. Thank you Ms White for coming out of the shadows and raising awareness. You're amazing. We all are.
College-educated professional with 30 yrs experience here, still full of vigor and aching to work, with still brown hair and at a youthful 120lbs... yet no longer getting offers. Long term unemployed, nest egg spent to survive, faking happiness daily, because no one wants to hear my sad story- boo hoo.

Crystal Davis Yes, I apply to temp positions too; I got temp jobs easily after my first layoff 20 yrs ago...but 5 layoffs later, just not happening anymore, possibly because companies don't want to hire "long term unemployed" (6+ months) especially age 50+ who've only had two 6-mo long positions in last 3 yrs. Yes, it is ridiculous and age discrimination, but still legal. Easy to get down on yourself when rejection happens every day. I happened upon your video because the title described me. Then as listened to your eloquent speech, I began to weep, then sobbed. Because I have been hiding within these truths you spoke of since February 25th.
I laugh at the reality for the last 13 of my 37 years of employment, I worked in the human resources industry in many various capacity, earning a very good salary. Yet now I get so many reject emails in response to my resumes & application; after awhile how can it not wear on your self-confidence or psyche?
The main thing that resonate from your speech was "getting off my high horse" & the statement, "money is green". I had stopped praying for job. Why return to that industry that defined my worth by a quota, matrix or evaluation score. A destination of life in the hands of another manager as old or older than myself, hustling for someone else company or agency. I'm DONE! I decided it was time utilize that almost bachelor degree in Fine Art & reopen those plastic totes of creativity that I set aside for when I'd retire at 65, & get unbusy living "the life" and jump start my own dream NOW. It may be the very thing to sustain me once I my year of unemployment is up. The steps to launch my business, Artsy Curvy Creations is starting slow as I build funds & reinvest them. But my faith was renewed when I post my first TH-cam video for a woman, who was also in my predicament & is now coaching me in this transition in life at 55+. Thank you for speaking your truth or our truths.

Please hang in there! That almost Art degree will likely be the thing that saves you. I’m not in my 50’s but in a similar situation and not just broke but actually poor, 1 step away from extreme poverty if I didn’t have a roof over my head right now. I’m going back to my creativity and like you, that art that I’ve set aside for a later time is being reborn, out of necessity and hope that it will help to create a means to overcome the hardships endured the past 5-6 years. You will make it! I wish you success. There are so many in their 40’-50’s in this nation that are right on the edge of homelessness, many after working hard all there lives. This is a country with no safety net and many people who don’t care, and have been thought not to care for others, especially those in need. May success follow you on your journey towards a wonderful new life.

Wow! Seems alot of us are in this predicament. I am 55 and working security. Just never thought I'd be this age and still working this hard. I am naturally gifted in an artistic sort of way. Maybe this can sustain me in my future.

The struggle is sooooo real. I've been dealing with being underemployed since 2006. I've applied to so many jobs I've lost count. No calls for interviews and I've totally lost hope. Two degrees and in the process and still no job. I pray 2018 will finally open the door to an opportunity of employment and finding my purpose in life.

What happened since 2018?
I admire this woman and her honesty. I want to send this video to every woman I know. I too found myself in this situation at 58 years old. A split from my husband left me penniless, without a house, or auto. I moved in with a friend until I could manage on my own. It's like a wildfire swept through the plains of my life & left devastation. Faking normal left a resounding message in my head & my heart. I lift prayers for your future, but also your impact on the women of this generation.
It's been so rough for me trading on my own I have also had a lot of losses but I see people talking of making good gains from investing into cryptos, how can this be achieved?

I wish someone would give me her book at first I did not believe her but after I got sick I noticed it could happen to any woman or man. The world is changing and God have to help us. I try my best to take care of what need to be taken care of.
This was the best overview of seniors plight today, I've ever heard. We live longer and our country isn't providing us that luxury. I worked 80 hr weeks just to pay rent, bills and provide for my children as a single mom. I'm disabled but always worked. I have a disabled daughter, whom I provide for, entirely alone. Yes, I made some wrong choices back before age was a deterrent in society, so now I suffer. No pension, no savings and living off SS...have you any idea how hard that is. No job offers yet I keep filling out applications. I have numerous health issues and a recent amputation, yet I'm ready to work still.
My future is bleak yet I have hope..I won't give up.. I can't.
Here's to all the others in my boat...keep rowing people.

Everyone tries to fix you, when you speak openly, this way. The truth is, that poverty, and it's causes are complicated! People's lives are complicated! That's why many of us, fake normal... it's easier than enduring the simplistic advice that comes your way. After all, this is a smart, educated, insightful woman. @@heathermcmurray5590 That is why she lost all of her money and is in this situation now, because she "started her own business after working for the World Bank making over $200,000/yr." She took all her "retirement" money to start the business. She thought she'd have a chain of stores and everything tanked and she lost it all in 2008. She explains this on PBS. She's a smart woman but she found that her age was her main factor against her getting back in the corporate world. As my mother always said "You don't miss what you never had." In her case she had it all, so it was hard to be without it.

This is me. I've been self employed for 9 years. I live in a 5 bedroom home in the suburbs of southern California. Even with two incomes we have been struggling for years to maintain our middle class life. I raised three grown girls and now we are raising our 6 year old grandson since birth. I feel as broke as I did when I was a young mom in my early 20's.... I thought by this time in my life (age 41) I would be seeing the world.....This video is relatable.
I had the experience of being the ripe age of 33 when someone said to me"Why should I hire you when you are so old?" and I'm not in the US. That was my reality for a while until I changed professions.From what I'm reading below she took risks that didn't pay off and sometimes that happens. We try to live smart and do the right things/ the so-called right choices but life happens. We just have to make the best of each situation and try to have contingencies for the really hard stuff.
You should hire me so I can make sure the young ones don't screw up.

After reading the comments below I noticed no one addressed a growing issue in the U.S. - ageism hiring bias. I lost my position 2 years ago and have diligently looked for a permanent position while taking consulting work whenever possible. I've applied to over 150 positions only to be ignored by recruiters/hiring managers or told I didn't have the proverbial "right skill set". I've seen companies hire younger, less experienced individuals or not fill the position vs. hiring individuals older than 50. Interesting facts - the median age of US presidents - 55 yrs. 6 months, US representatives - 57 yrs., and Senators - 61 yrs. In the US there are approximately 248k CEOs (2013) with an average age of 63 yrs. Interesting that we have no difficulty electing individuals older than 55 yrs.+ to run the country and retain CEOs that are older than 60 yrs. but expect those below these ranks to "retire" and understand why they aren't considered for open positions.
Sorry you are going through this. My department was outsourced. However, I am currently working but I make less than half of what I used to. I am also a college graduate with 30 plus years experience and no one wants to hire me.
I bring up this issue continually. Our dreadful politicians don't bring it up, only when speaking of raising the age of collecting Social Security. Never do they address we are expected to have a longer working life yet ageism is rampant and widely overlooked.
Yet we continue to reelect them.

The struggle is real. As a single mother of three, working two jobs and trying to follow my dreams is and still a difficult task. I have a Sociology and an Engineering degree, i live within my means and small up. The resources are out there and i am not ashamed to use it. I am blessed and favored. When i give to others, I know God sees it and blesses me by 10 folds and it never fails.
I forget about my situation and how my struggles can keep me in the dumps but I stay positive with the glass half full. I look to others who are successful and admire them knowing they admire my strength and resilience.
Life is hard but i stay away from drugs, alcohol and drinking. I don't go after trends and fashion. I stay away from malls and having to consume items i don't need. I do what is right for my children, our health and safety. Drink plenty of water and excercise. Keep life simple and uncluttered. This is me.

Wish I hadn't found this! It saddens me more to find out what I thought was just a passing phase in my life is a trend in this country. Not unemployed, I have been UNDEREMPLOYED but not for much longer, God is still good and we are all just one introduction, one hand shake or one idea away from who we were intended to be. Don't give up, keep looking! We are wise enough now to know what to do with success!
My best advice to everyone is to live below your means. It's that simple. Don''t buy that house you can afford. Buy the house that leaves you plenty of money leftover. Don't buy cars every five years. Buy one and run it to the ground so instead of having nonstop car payments you have car payments for 5 or 6 years and no payments 6-10 if not much longer. Matter of fact save for your next car during that time so you don't finance it. Don't buy a bunch of things for your house. Just buy what you need. The rest is going to clutter your house and fill your attic, closets, basements, & garages. I cannot stress this enough. If you want free cash to invest and spend then buy a small house. I know you want to entertain but really how often are you going to do it and is it worth spending $1,000 plus extra a month. Do your friends and family really care whether your house is big enough or are they simple looking for a fun night of getting together. Small house is key.

But here in Kenya we have to deal with stigma; friends you formerly had and thought tou could count on for some small help now laugh and ridicule so you find yourself keeping to yourself and trying to figure it out all on your own.

The same people who wonder how someone so well educated can struggle are also blind to young, broke recent graduates who are in insurmountable debt and underemployed. The economy is so different than what it was 50 years ago, yet we keep doing the same thing expecting magical results. The system is badly broken.
I am in this situation. The Bible tells me not to be afraid, but I am. I fear lossing my home and my mind. I am tired of juggling credit card debt and medical bills. I would hate this for anyone. I was so full of potential with a B.S. Not sure what to do as a 52 year old that all I wanted to do was help others and now I can't help myself. Some ideas: Be sure if you have mortgage to use HARP before end of year. "The government’s Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) ". Although it feels bad, you may live in a state where leaving certain medical bills unpaid will not result in collections. You might live in a state where unsecured debt(cc) cannot be taken out of home equity or work garnishments. Find all the food banks, churches too and don't be shy. If you have room for garden, grow food and make canned foods as much as possible. Find a mentor in their 70's-- they were raised with this stuff. Foxfire books at library or cheap online at thrift books teaches old ways. Keep a daily gratitude journal.

Exactly what I’m going through now at 53. You’ve presented our situation so eloquently and truthfully that I admire your strength and passion, and it gives me hope knowing that I’m not alone in this dark time of my life which I have found myself in because of a layoff from a company I have spent many years; who through restructuring became an uncaring soulless entity that started to clear house of its older employees with no regard to the hard work and sacrifice I have given throughout years I was there.

It needs to be stressed that a significant source of the problem is the skyrocketing cost of housing the past 30+ years. When I was growing up in the 70s, even a lower middle class salary, such as my mother's, could and did support an entire family. We sold our 2 family house in Boston in 1975 for $36k. Last year, another 2 family on that same small, cramped street was listed at $1.1 million. Meaning, even if you deducted ONE MILLION DOLLARS from the price of that house, it would still be THREE TIMES what we sold our house for.

This was an amazing TedTalk and opened my eyes. I am a 54 year old female who was furloughed along with 90% of my company, due to COVID-19. I am not certain if my employer's business will take all of us back, or maybe fold completely. I am considering several options including relocating to a much cheaper area, preemptively getting another job that is available, and possibly starting a new business. I wish I had the energy that I did when I was 30 years old. What I do have now though, is a lot more knowledge, common sense and willingness to survive. Thank you Ms. White. I hope through the TedTalk and your book that you are achieving financial stability.

Listening to her made me feel so sad. Because I see that everywhere now a days. Aging. Elders. That are poor. Work their whole lives till they die. And still have to worry about having food or electricity next month. It's not just big companies taking everything for themselves. It's families too. I see parents give all the time to their children. But, when the parents end up old and poor, they are left on their own. I see people get disabled and sick but brothers, sisters and children abandon them. So it's not just retirement savings. It's our society.

I have seen this coming for me since 1982. Now I am 67 and trapped with no way out that I can see. I am too old, overqualified, and too expensive. I am competing with kids with 2 or 3 years of experience. Employers want miracles for bargain basement prices even if I am 2 to 3 times more productive than they are. My kids do not talk to me anymore and I am alone. I look into the future and I ask myself why bother. I am tired of hurting and having no one to care about. Now I am writing here which is nothing more than a cry for help into the night that fades and is gone, as I wish I was.
David, sorry to hear your situation. I know what that's like to have kids who reject you. I had that happen for a few years with one of my kids. But don't give up, things can change. I am praying you will be ok and that things will look up for you.
David- try to adopt a small pet. It may help you cope with loneliness.
@@lmccauley7319 I have discovered that hermit crabs make excellent pets. They cost very little, require little maintenance, can be taken out of their enclosure and held, they can walk on you, and best of all, you can keep them stealth style if there's a no pets rule where you stay.
The struggle is real. I have had to freelance since I was 40 and have faced periods of near homelessness and struggled when I do not have enough clients. And people keep saying get a job like it is easy past 40. Fortunately, my Faith has seen me through so far.
I'm so happy that I found myself upon Ms. White's story; the reality is we have to have a home (purchase or rent) and the cost are astronomical! It's very hard to save when you're spending over half of your take home pay to ensure you have a safe, clean place to live. If housing cost were more reasonable purhaps we'd have more money to sock away in our retirements! This is all so very bleek.....I'm only 45.....and have come to this relevation back in the late 90's.....SAD prospect to ponder.....
Simply buying a single home, condo or even renting normally sits people right where the rich want them. rents and mortgage pmts. apparently are set at what people supposedly can afford. The way around it is to take a different tack like using equity to become a landlord, moonlighting, house-sharing or any combo. For most, a lot of these ares drastic and some impossible but until we get a good UBI rolling there isn't really anything else we can control.

I feel the struggle been on my own and taking care of everyone else, since i was 16yrs old and at 45yrs old i"m still taking care of everyone else .i was a vendor at a mall 6yrs ago and they shut us down two weeks notice and everyone was out of a job so i started working from the trunk of my car selling merchandise and door dashing and then let a person i helped use my car and they totaled it i only had comprehensive coverage that paid for the damages but not my vehicle been renting vehicles since feb of this yr for $750 a month and now its $850 because of the summer rates yes this was a great boost but 45 unemployed faking normal. thank you my sister for sharing this

Material things don't mean so much, and my health is good. I am holding on to my faith, family and keeping it real. Thank you for speaking up! I am writing now, because there's no need to put it off any longer.
The struggle is real. I have been laid off numerous times and so I had to start over again and again. I don't have degrees. I have a job now and it has almost been 3 years on the job but I had to start at a wage I made in 1999. Only thing is nothing else is at 1999 prices. I am 56 and married but my husbands body is breaking down, so he may need to retire in the next 10 years or sooner. I pray I don't get laid off again. Companies don't seem to want experienced, dependable, dedicated workers any more. Manufacturing jobs have become so automated, which is the type of work I'm doing that all they seem to be hiring are young and cheap employees. They have grown up the computers so they seem to feel it is easier to train these employees.
The body break-down almost happened to my husband. Sounds trite but I'm 64 and have sitting and standing disability but i do the short work outs from videos and table exercises as well as physical therapy. It helps a lot but then...I love athletic activities. There's a 6 minute workout on youtube and it helps a little. We'd be better off being landlords because it doesn't take much time but it does take money. I'm selling my house in about a month, with any luck and buying a multi-unit so I'll be employed (somewhat) even though I need to spend at least half my waking hours in a lounging position. I may even get to move to an area I like a lot better than where I am now. Good luck everyone. Google Diatomaceous Earth and start him off on that, a teaspoon empty stomach for two weeks and gradually up to two tables spoons. I am 58 and am spreading the word about this cheap stuff that cleans you out, adds collagen , lowers cholesterol etc. I just bought my 2nd 50 lb bag and give tons of it away to whomever will accept it. I love it when someone calls me like my reluctant cousin to say she woke up without pain after 8 days on it. Next, intermittent fasting is the holy grail of feeling and looking good at our ages. I lost weight, have tons of energy and I feel like I could work another 30 years but definitely will live it! Google it! Intermittent fasting is science based.
Companies are looking to hire people who are willing to work for the least amount of money and people are low balling each other to where the companies are winning.

Feelings of failure are overwhelming and everyone around you blames you. There is no understanding that the world has changed. Having a job does not mean you can pay the rent and feed yourself. Things I have learned in this financial abyss are flexibility and relying on my own sense of respect and understanding for self-worth. This hit home for me. I am 56 years old. I have worked since I was 14 years old. I have always worked 2 jobs to provide for my children. Developed foot problems along the way from long standing. Injured my shoulder on the job. Applied for disability and got denied twice. Had a hard time finding a job and when I did it is a very low paying job with supervisors that treat you like you're nothing. It is so frustrating. Thank God I get help from my children. If it were not for them I would be homeless. It should not be like this for seniors who spend their life paying into the system in a country as rich as ours. Just plan shameful. It really hurts my heart. I had so many dreams and aspirations when I was young. Now I just have feelings of hopelessness and no self worth.

Wondering and feeling somewhat ashamed, that despite all of our diligence and hard work, the America dream seems to have alluded us, to have slipped right through our fingers as we approached the end of our anticipated professional lives. It seems that a lot of people believe that it should be easy for her to get a job because of her qualifications. Actually, there comes a point where her qualifications become a liability in her quest for employment. Employers believe she is over qualified and will not hire someone who is because they believe that person will leave the moment they find a better opportunity/job. They look at it as a waste of their time and we all know, time is money.
77summertime yes that is correct, people don’t understand that with higher education you can’t even get a job that’s minimum wage because these employers don’t want to hire for stop-gap positions. They want employees they know will not leave as soon as there’s another opportunity. The sad part is many over qualified would happily take anything if given a chance! I’m in similar situation but don’t have her high degrees and I’m at least 10 years younger. I’m overqualified for retail because I’ve not worked in that for over 15 years but am under qualified to clean homes because I’m not a professional cleaner. Can’t go back to the food industry due to severe allergies.

Either that, or they're afraid she'd want more than they're willing to pay. These are the resumes that don't get callbacks. And yes, even if they were willing to be open minded to see if she'd accept lower pay, they're afraid she'd leave for a higher paying opportunity as soon as one arose.
The thing is, very few people stick around and make a job their lifetime passion theses days. Even younger workers know there is no loyaylty anymore. It's harder for them to look at an older person and belive that person will make the company their life and passion, versus a younger, more maleable employee who hasn't been around te block yet.
It is a terrible situation where there are no jobs and any income is so small. The stress of poverty and the fear. I hope God will help everyone in this situation, other people don’t understand. The normal we all knew is finished as you say. Terrific TED talk, you are so right

Oh my gosh, I needed to see this so badly today! I am in such a similar situation, and I sometimes feel like I cannot face the day! My husband and I were children of the seventies, and no, we did not save, but we both had a few decent jobs. I opened up a women's boutique in May of 2012, and then in September of 2012, he was in a bad car accident, and now has a brain injury. My husband was such a strong man, and would do anything for his family. Now, he is a shadow of that person. Long story short, my business failed, I had to close it, (not sell it.. the numbers weren't nearly good enough for anyone to actually buy it) and now, neither one of us work much, but do get by, mostly from charity from people who love us, thank goodness for these people. I turned 61 yesterday, and he is 60. It is such a rude awakening, but sitting there in your mind, thinking you are the only one in the world that has let this terrible fate happen to you, is almost unbearable. So, thank-you, Elizabeth White, for bringing this problem out in the open, where it can be talked about, instead of suffering in silence and shame.

I was searching for my morning stretch video and Elizabeth's talk popped up. Very relevant and timely for me personally as I find myself asking some very similar questions and facing very similar challenges. My journey has taken me to a place where I question many things, including the words "last year's fashion"...what if clothes were just clothes and "last year" wasn't a shameful thing in our society? I had to ask myself this when I stopped shopping retail and moved into the recycled clothing sector due to having to choose between my $2550 rent on a 1 bedroom apartment in oakland and spending the same amount on "this year's fashion". The less you have the more you are greatful for. I have no credit cards, no contract phone , no transport, no job, but I wake every day and feel blessed as the sun rises. I'm a single mum of 3 ...not in the best health but I will never loose the love for life and all it gives to me for free.
Comment passing by.... struggling between health and job...which makes me more depressed all day. But there is always a hope I will get a work and be happy.

Thank you for having the courage to do this very important video. I never hear anyone talking about this topic that has become so taboo. I am also in this situation at 52, left an abusive relationship and started over completely. I was always so ambitious but always only made just enough for my needs, and never enough to seriously save. I'm now stuck in a job that I'm overly qualified, twenty years older than my colleagues and overworked (employer forcing me to work 7 days per week or get demoted) and stressed to the hilt. (even my colleague had a nervous breakdown). But I cannot quit because I have no savings, and every resume I send out gets rejected. I feel hopeless and desperate as well, thinking death would not be such a bad thing. There's got to be a way out of this hellish situation.
You are not alone. My coworker was telling me how hard it was for her to save because she has to raise her 2 grandchildren. I told her my retirement plan involves my 38 and 1 bullet. We laughed, but I was dead serious.
Would love to get an update to see how you’re doing. I watch this video regularly because it gives me some strength and to remind myself that I’m not alone.
I'm seeing this situation for many,many women - and men. Thanks for being brave enough for tearing away the phoniness of trying to "fake it" in trying circumstances. While I've been retired and married for many years, I've learned to "small up" in the face of a fixed income that largely goes to paying a mortgage. I do not live beyond my means and I've learned to enjoy my life with what my husband and I have Finding interests - especially hobbies - is vital for all those of a "certain age." But also I encourage my friends no matter what their age to find something that captures their love and attention; it's the difference between just surviving and truly living.
