Unbelievable that the FAA already gave Trevor Jacob his licence back after crashing a plane and yet you get suspended for following the AIM. Hoping it all gets resolved and looking forward to more great content next year.

Awesome video Trent! You have now brought in-flight wifi to STOL aircraft. I was excited to be a part on a team that installed them for United 10 years ago on their domestic aircraft. I hope you provide us more details with this project as you go along, possibly doing a live stream, as you mentioned, there appears to be a dropout for these dishes, and or various opportunities that rarely connect LIVE. Hopefully develop crashworthy brackets for it. Hell Yeah! Keep on keeping on!
The satellite internet on aircraft 10 years ago are a bit different than starlink. The older systems were geostationary systems that are very high (22,236 miles up). Since the satellites are in geosync the dish just points up. Nice and Simple. Being so far away really lowered the bandwidth and upped the latency of the system. Starlink operates in LEO around 340 miles altitude so there is more bandwidth and much lower latency. While the lower orbits help with bandwidth and latency, it means the "dish" has to actively track the satellites in the sky. Which can be hard with a flat mount that is moving around in flight. So the new stuff is faster and truly realtime, it might have more problems on a moving airplane though. The special aviation Starlink systems can track satellites faster to handle the bumps and are built very streamline to be mounted on the skin of a plane. Downside to that is the price.... They are quoting 150k install and 25k/m for service.
Trent consider using a DIN/Hella/Merit (several names) plug and socket instead of a cigarette plug and socket. DIN plugs have a notch in the pin that locates securely in spring-loaded tabs in the socket and holds the plug reasonably secure in place. Used a lot in off-road vehicals here in Australia.

With an internet link like that you could stream your engine and flight data to storage at your home; like a remote black box.

I'll never fly a plane and probably never have Starlink or a 3d printer, but I have always loved technology and your channel is so much fun to watch. If only I was 40 years younger. Awesome setup! One thing you might consider is how will it take a hard landing. It would be a bummer to have it fall down and bonk you in a critical phase of flight.
You should live stream your flights !!! that will be awesome to see, and use like 3 to 4 cameras for different angels.
Very cool about mounting Starlink on your plane! I've been interested in 3d printing for a long time now. I have a Flashforge Finder and the first thing that was printed out on it was a pair of cup holder adaptors. For some reason the Subaru Forester SH (09-12) has *square* cupholders in the center console just behind the gear shifter. That would have worked if they had made the square small enough that your can of soda or fountain drink was held securely...but it is just to large, and as you accelerate and break, you have a good chance of spilling said fluids, which gets messy quickly! Print out a pair of the easy to find 3d models, and no more sloshing.

It's nice to see someone using a 3d printer in day to day life. If people want printed items but don't want to buy a whole printer they can always order parts from people like me as well. I love helping people out with jobs just like you were showing in this video.

I believe Starlink is cheaper than ADS-B and even a transponder (we don't normally use transponders). But we fly at about 80mph max hence we can get a good signal. Also we can tune into various websites that will give us live updates of aircraft traffic movement (VERY handy) and wind and weather updates by the minute (VERY handy).

You might be able to get 4 high strength suction cups on some threads and mount it further back on the back glass to keep your forward sight lines as well as being simpler to transfer from vehicle to vehicle
Your mention of the 3D printer and thermal expansion reminded to to ask you: How's the heating system working in the shop? You installed all the pex tubing in the floor and had that cool thermal system, so how about an update?
that is an awesome practical print! i think you might find some extra strength printing in the flat orientation for the long section, then creating a bolt-together joint for the tube clamp portion- that way the layer lines work in your favor. I print near 24/7 for personal projects but they happen to need to be strong and withstand "pressures" higher than most parts (wink wink). You've been a huge inspiration to me both as a drone and GA pilot, and I can't wait to get to the point where I can responsibly afford a kitfox. I also have been in the game since about 2013 and my first printer was an Anet A8, and you're so right, they used to be SO janky
Getting kids involved in new tech is always great.
This is a really cool idea and if you really wanted to build it in it could easily go down the tail or in the wing because the fabric covering won't interfere with the signal.
I guess all of us who manage to do reasonable DIY work have to make from time to time special tools to do a job. This has always taken some skill to achieve but these new fangled printers have made this task much easier. Of course there is a cost penalty involved but yer makes yer choice and pays yer money. Try turning off GPS on your Starlink dish. In the Starlink app at the bottom right click on “advanced”, then on “debug-data”, scroll all the way down and the penultimate point. No GPS, no speed :)
No GPS= no reliable in motion use at all. All that needs to happen is mobile priority toggled on, then speed limit is ~250 knts.
This doesn't work.
I have also tested this in a 182 and the speed limit is around 85mph. Also, the offline lockouts get progressively longer the more you break that speed limit and we have had to power cycle the unit or land to get network again.
Starlink does not want you to do this because they have a product in development for aviation and it's insanely expensive, even though there are only few STC for it.
You now carry the sum of all human knowledge to wherever you want to go.

Sweet mount! I’d keep an eye out for cracks developing over time due to modal frequencies created by the plane’s engine. Failure mode of falling on the pilots head or into his field of view is high consequence.

Man I love these videos you're making. I'm not a pilot and I enjoy flight sim version of your plane and always try and go where you fly to see what it's like in the sim. I'm just wondering, and its going to sound silly, but, why don't planes have rear view mirrors or surround view cameras? It would be so nice to see around you without twisting your head around like crazy. Especially when flying closely to other pilots. Even cyclists can have Garmin devices for seeing behind them these days, and some cars also come out with surround cameras which goes on when you cross lanes on the highway.

One of the weird issues I had when setting up a friends Starlink in Reno was they still required you to tie an address to the service - I think they removed this requirement but it made it no better than a Femtocell from Verizon or AT&T. Every time they wanted to "go mobile" it'd be an unreliable mess.

That’s amazing. Was wondering who will be the first to do this. Antenna is still pretty big, obviously will be getting smaller. I have a carbon fibre fuselage so no way to mount this internally. I’m flying outside US/EU so internet onboard would be nice to get weather etc.
He's not the first, he's just the loudest. Many Aviation companies have been messing with this for over a year.

This is a cool concept. I've heard T-Mobile will be offering satellite connectivity very soon, and the new Samsung Galaxy 23S Ultra will is satellite capable. Then you have phone access and can share to other devices. That sure beats a big panel install. Not sure about the next iPhone...

I'd be worried about it draining your battery dry and leaving you unable to start your engine. May want to look into an auto-shutoff on low battery for it, assuming you don't already have something like that.

If you have a rough landing or two you might find that those prints fail and you end up with a starlink falling on your head or into your lap. Probably not very safe. Have those mounts machined properly now you know the design.

3dxtech high temp polycarbonate prints well on the X1 and has a glass transition temp of around 300°F. It would hold up well
I wonder if Scrappy will have this for SAR mission sets?
Get rid of that Lighter plug , use an Anderson or xt60 or anything but that , it maybe why it looses signal due to low current issues (In my opinion)

Trent, start using ASA over PETG. Way better properties for UV resistance and made for outdoor applications.
Polycarbonate with a uv protective clear coat is the way to go, or add uv protection to the window. Asa still has a relatively low glass transition temperature.

3:00 Access to weather where you don’t have cellular data? Well that was already solved years ago with XM satellite weather 🤷🏼♂️ Just get a Garmin GDL 52 and then not only do you get XM data, but you also get ADS-B in, and a stand alone AHRS.
I fly different airplanes with no wx radar and a lot over the ocean globally. I was looking at this option as a substitute for the insanely expensive SATCOM llink to get wx data updates along the route. This would be awesome to be able to have foreflight linked to the web and get real time weather. As far as i have noticed the only plan that is not speed capped (100miles/h) is the mini roam but i reckon it says that it works continental inland (registration address dependent?). I had reports of it working in bahamas and turks but that is not considered full oceanic and may actually still be able to work. Do you have any insight on this that you can share please? Or is there a place where we can have these questions answered? I know htey have a specific aviation solution but thats for airliner companies and its not in my price range obviously. Was hoping to find a solution to use every so often (one can pause the plan which is great when you don't need it) in these private flights. Thanks

The sun may make a parked plane too hot for the PETG. Your design probably won't fail but the 3D printed parts may get soft and deform. Consider printing the parts in ASA - C (carbon fiber filled ASA) which will take a much higher temperature and is UV stable. The auto industry uses ASA all over their cars and trucks.
After I shot this video I reprinted them in PC-CF so they should be good now 🤙 I was worried about the heat as well.
If you have any failures with later adhesion, try straight PC. The CF degrades layer adhesion but proper orientation should compensate for that.
@@grizfyrfyter I just ordered some straight PC as well as some high temp nylon-CF to try. It will be interesting to see what ends up being the best material for this one. I also need to tweak my deign to unbolt from the airframe easier so it is easy to remove the clamps.
