You drop cannonfire on them, it does nothing. You drop bombs on them, it does nothing. You drop missiles on them, it does nothing. You drop whole planes on them, it does nothing. Nothing in the armory works. The path is clear, it's time to use the ultimate weapon. EE, you have to drop Shrek on them.
Maxim M Hans-Ulrich Rudel! EDIT: Also, the original post is more literally correct than most people know; the A-10 was literally designed as a platform for the gun, rather than the other way around.
perhaps the mech-jeb tanks arnt registering as physics object while you are flying. i personally saw 3 direct hits and they didnt even jostle, maybe the load range doesnt allow the indirect damage.
It's the gray armor plates. They're pretty much invulnerable. Nothing short of a direct hit from one of Danny2462's World Busters will scratch those. Try something like airdropping a tank and firing point-blank through the treads.
You need to design a cruise missile piloted via drone core, and then using Burn Together, fly 3 (Or the desired number) to the target area. Once you are flying above the target area, tell the group to lower their throttle, this way they come in slow and can stay in the area for longer. You can then break one of the cruise missiles off of formation, throttle all the way up, and then hit the tank. You miss? Throw another cruise missile at the tank, they are lingering in the area, waiting for you to use them. Same thing if you don't do any damage. You could also experiment with different types of cruise missiles. Explosive, kinetic, even cluster (Maybe use BD Armory bombs that deploy last second). I think it's a great idea seeing as you haven't made a cruise missile yet.
Християн лазаров You can't hack them if you pretend the drone has it's mission pre-coded into the machine with the AI programmed to carry out the mission by itself, with no signals going in or out of the drone. This means no outside help, no signals for Mech Jeb to hack.
FNAFFANFTW23123 Are you fucking stupid? I said you can 'pretend' that the drones are self reliant. Obviously fucking mods can't do that, just like Mech Jeb isn't REALLY evil. Also, if you are saying mods can't let you fly in formation, Burn Together can. You are the only idiot here, read what I write before you come here talking shit.
Consider the following: 1. High altitude bomber with cluster bombs 2. Massive payload of AGM's 3. AC-130 approach (Howitzer cannons) 4. Some plane with a Goalkeeper turret on it 5. Tank destroyers 6. Trucks armed to the teeth, or 8. A rover with solar panels and a USAF laser to match.
Frigity Frig Well most of the info is related to around 30 years ago. Now the Warthog is not quite as good as it used to be. The main gun has very little effect vs MBTs - main use is extended loiter time and repairability.
EnterElysium >inb4 some wartime tests confirm that the warthog can fly without both engines and a whole side disabled and land safely. >inb4 this isn't your jet-waifu >inb4 inb4 may may aroes lel xD
I don't know if you can do this, but if you have the kerbal attachment system, why not just build a hovering craft, pick up the tanks, and drop them in the ocean. They didn't seem to be firing on you, so maybe do a night raid? That way, you can also try and save our two POWs. With veteran jeb Kerman leading the mission. Unless he's dead. I'm not sure right now.
Oh my god o-o This has been a problem since like WWK2. You need either heavier weapons for Elysium or lighter armor for MJ. It may also be a bit of a bug with the mods? You should set up a test rig so that you can ensure the weapons can even damage the tanks at all.
I tried making an A-10 a while back with B9 and man, I gained even more respect for aircraft designers. Trying to balance everything out on the plane between the center of thrust, lift, and mass and keeping it nimble and usable was one of the most difficult things I've done, and I never did quite get it working right.
The A10-A / C's Engions are placed where they are to hide the heat from the turbofans as it passes overhead, so that IR SAMS can't lock on. Same reason the F-117, B-2, YF23 have the engines they have.
FictionDragon I did a cargo plane design once. Eventually I was like "wait... Radially mounted howitzer.." and put a howitzer and a vulcan on one side. it worked really well.
For CAS runs, I would suggest having your wings angled about 2 increments upwards (I think each increment is 15', so 30'), which will give you lift while still being able to point your guns down. Alternatively, you could do what I do, and use Infernal Robotics to either have rotating wings so you can increase your AoA without extreme pitching, or have the GAU-8s mounted on a docking washer/powered hinge with perhaps a HullcamVDS camera for precise targetting.
Attacking from the air isn't working. We're going to have to go in the old fashioned way. A mobile artillery platform would be a good option. The American M40 from WW2 would be a good design basis. P.S. Them MechJeb Tanks are tough...
EE, the major reason for having high mounted engines (in the case of the A-10 at least) is to protect them from ground fire, since the engines are one of the most delicate parts of the aircraft they wanted as much aircraft between the bullets and the engines as possible.
The A-10 Warthog but pilots also call it thunderbolt 2 because how fast it went. The original thunderbolt was made in 1942 during the World War II it was a fighter-bomber. The A-10 Warthog is a close air support with armored vehicles. So it's official name is A-10 Warthog.
I'm not sure, but I think the actual A-10 gun is angled slightly downward, so as to not require such a steep pull-up after every burst. Also, the strategy manuals I have suggest that the A-10 should, against tanks, be used to lead a formation of attack helicopters, with the A-10 dealing with anti-air and command tanks, and the helicopters using their rockets/missiles to mop up the remainder of the formation.
Maybe you should make a massive gunship with the dual 105mm cannons from Spanner's Boomsticks slung under the fuselage in a cargo bay. I've tested those myself and they wreck space center buildings in a single hit so a tank should be completely annihilated.
You know, those grey panels that you made the tanks out of, they are actually indestructible according to the physics of KSP. If you want to destroy them, you can't, you have to put them somewhere they can't harm anything. Use some kind of magnetic thing to move them.
You need to install some turrets on the planes facing downward at an angle, or on the sides, or on a moveable platform. That way you won't have to aim the cockpit at the enemies to fire.
Fun fact.. The A-10's gun is so integrated into the flight platform, that when ground crew remove the cannon to service it, they have to mount a "kickstand" on to the tail otherwise it would tip backwards.
You should make a kerbal-less rocket with a payload on the front. You can launch it from the launch pad and not the runway. Basically just a guided rocket....
Modern A-10 variants do use a wide variety of smart bombs like the GBU-12 Paveway II. There are not a lot of planes that can actually carry these kind of smartbombs and the "standard" loadout (which contains AIM-9 Sidewinders and Maverick Air-to-Ground missiles). Other Countries employing the GBU-12 smart bomb actually have problems carrying them efficently. For example the Eurofighter, designed as a multirole fighter, has a really hard time carrying them. That's why the German Armed Forces still keep the Panavi Tornado variants.
BTW: Hellfires are just for helicopters, they can't do high speeds (there is a british/german version of them though, which is fired from the Eurofighter. It's called the Brimstone).
AsRedAsBlood Drones as well as a few prop-driven planes (KC130 Harvest HAWK for example) can be equipped with American hellfires. Only because they are pretty slow compared to F-15s and Typhoons though.
At least in the civilian air industry High mounted engine have proven to be susceptible to damage from icing off of the wings. You'd think that if the wings took damage the debris would be likely to be ingested by the engine too.
One way to fix this tank problem... Cluster impact missile! Kind of like the hellstorm from bo2. Another idea is a high velocity high strength physicless part launched like a rail gun from a distance.
oh did i forget to mention that the secret d4 cannon on the mecjeb space station is about to fire at the kerben resistance station (aka DK 9) save them or where going to have a short war.
It looks like it's time to bring back the original nuclear missile plans from the first episode used against the Styx in order to destroy the tanks made of of some secret advanced alloy only Mech Jeb knows how to create.
MechJeb must be using some sort of new metal for the tanks other wise those are some heavily armored tanks.. EE might I recommend having the Kerbal Navy or Army assist in assaulting those tanks, cause air power may not be cutting it..
Use the new tools in the editor, you can place the cannons on the fuselage and use the move tool so they'll keep pointing forward.. The new tools are really handy!!
Here is my suggestion. I feel you should make an Mi 24 hind and use its' light troop transport ability for evac while also using its' gunship ability for air support. or an MH 60L dap Black Hawk just for gunship, and you need more Dakka on your planes
Yeah...those steel plates you covered those with I'm pretty sure are indestructible.... Or at least close to it. I've seen a ship covered in those survive crashing from orbit.
Suggestion on a build: make a A39 turtoise tank. The name says all btw. Slow 228 mm of armor in front in real life. 5 were built and at least one is fully functioning today
You should make a C-130 Goliath, or the Galaxy plane that is even bigger, and airdrop either a MOAB, a tank destroyer/sniper tank, or maybe an artillery setup. :3

EE, you have to drop Shrek on them.
Nah drop natalie Portman or Justin Buber
The Average Pro get JB to toke up with them!
Comrade Catastrophe They be shRekt!
:0 mother of god.
time for the seismic charge :D
A10 Thunderbolt isn't a plane, its a gatling gun with wings.
so true, so frikin true
And made after advice of the best divebomber pilot of WW2.
Maxim M Hans-Ulrich Rudel!
EDIT: Also, the original post is more literally correct than most people know; the A-10 was literally designed as a platform for the gun, rather than the other way around.
Joey Bishop lol, just imagine... farting would be literally lethal
+Joey Bishop yeah but by the time you hear the gun your already dead. literally, that does happen, you see the bullets hit, then you hear the fart
perhaps the mech-jeb tanks arnt registering as physics object while you are flying. i personally saw 3 direct hits and they didnt even jostle, maybe the load range doesnt allow the indirect damage.
Those panels are just ridiculously OP. Just edit them to have the same impact tolerance as other parts.
It's the gray armor plates. They're pretty much invulnerable. Nothing short of a direct hit from one of Danny2462's World Busters will scratch those. Try something like airdropping a tank and firing point-blank through the treads.

We dont use drone cores for the purpose that jeb can hack them

That would be cool to see tho!
EliteLegendZXx I agree :P
Those tanks are... built like a tank. Budum-tss!
***** Then EE better get... tanked up.
That was bad and you should feel bad.
Lol
I give you a patton the back good sir.
That was very... ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■) Punny
... fucking Hell, those tanks are invulnerable. At this rate, I'd say you need a fucking *nuke* to take them down.
www.zedge.net/ringtone/930801/
:P
nuuuuuukkkkkkkkeeeeeesssssssssssssss!!!
Y'all are forgetting the most obvious quotation: "we should nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
Liara Ashlynn Jennings drop a big kinetic rod with several nukes which detach to spread even more nukes on the tanks :D MURICA!!!
TheChosenZebra We tried that once, they missed.
Consider the following:
1. High altitude bomber with cluster bombs
2. Massive payload of AGM's
3. AC-130 approach (Howitzer cannons)
4. Some plane with a Goalkeeper turret on it
5. Tank destroyers
6. Trucks armed to the teeth, or
8. A rover with solar panels and a USAF laser to match.
Or:
1. Be an American.
A tip if u put the wings on the underside to make up for the fact that the engine is pushing you down. That's what they did irl
Woah someone who knows who they're talking about? incredible!
Frigity Frig Well most of the info is related to around 30 years ago. Now the Warthog is not quite as good as it used to be. The main gun has very little effect vs MBTs - main use is extended loiter time and repairability.
Frigity Frig Yeah, when I'm clueless I try not to be an asshole and visa-versa. Best to keep the two separate IMO. :P
EnterElysium >inb4 some wartime tests confirm that the warthog can fly without both engines and a whole side disabled and land safely.

Again with the super tanks. Every season. Styx, NAT, MECJeb three times (twice in WWK2 and now in WWK3).
I know man how do they do this?
Oh my god o-o
This has been a problem since like WWK2. You need either heavier weapons for Elysium or lighter armor for MJ. It may also be a bit of a bug with the mods? You should set up a test rig so that you can ensure the weapons can even damage the tanks at all.
".....oh, and we crashed the bomber." Famous last words
I tried making an A-10 a while back with B9 and man, I gained even more respect for aircraft designers.
Trying to balance everything out on the plane between the center of thrust, lift, and mass and keeping it nimble and usable was one of the most difficult things I've done, and I never did quite get it working right.
Ever heard of the P.1000 Ratte? Because the most effective way to fight a tank is with an even bigger tank.
Or the P.1500 Monster?
Think the Ratte would be better idea, KSP tends to crash when I drop a clusterbomb. god knows how well it would handle 80CM rounds.
I say a battleship on land is a good idea
You see Ivan, you put battleship on land, and when enemy see ship, they think they are at see and drown.
The when they think they drowning you blow them up!
put a "voulenter" kamikaze kerbal in a plane stacked with explosives and crash it into the mechjeb tanks. or build tv-guiided missiles
The A10-A / C's Engions are placed where they are to hide the heat from the turbofans as it passes overhead, so that IR SAMS can't lock on. Same reason the F-117, B-2, YF23 have the engines they have.
If you disable pitch control on wing elevons, and leave it on on tale, it would fly much better.
Also, try Lockheed AC-130 with a big badass cannon.
DV-13 I think that would be too unstable for KSP.
I think setting the trim after take off would help a huge amount too for gun run stability.
I think he did the AC130 in wwk 1
FictionDragon I did a cargo plane design once. Eventually I was like "wait... Radially mounted howitzer.." and put a howitzer and a vulcan on one side. it worked really well.

I really enjoy the slower pace of release of this. I always enjoyed wwk2, but there were times when it felt rushed
EE, the major reason for having high mounted engines (in the case of the A-10 at least) is to protect them from ground fire, since the engines are one of the most delicate parts of the aircraft they wanted as much aircraft between the bullets and the engines as possible.
I'm really glad this series is back, thank you.
A-10 Warthog. That's not a gun strapped to a plane. That's a plane strapped to a gun.
Absolutely 10/10 amazing recreation.
Fire down onto your targets while in a vertical dive, it is a tactic used with the A-10
As an avid DCS : A10C pilot, this is very interesting.
So THAT's what xkcd was talking about in the machine gun jetpack what-if!
EE, as well as the A-10 being resilient it is usually only used when you already have air superiority.
The voice at the start was amazing! It made me laugh!

I can tell you have quite a bit of fun with these videos. It just makes them even more fun to watch :-]
Tactical nuke maybe?
You may have made those tanks a little too... Invincible
I think a Sci-Fi Stuka design would be cool where it just flies down from orbit almost vertically and drops one or two massive bombs
something lovely about : Oh, and we crashed the brand new bomber:, in a gravely voice.
a ship! or parachute tanks!
"It was a long way to fly"
3 minutes mission time
Hmmmm....
*THONKING*
You know, those grey panels that you made the tanks out of, they are actually indestructible according to the physics of KSP. If you want to destroy them, you can't, you have to put them somewhere they can't harm anything. Use some kind of magnetic thing to move them.
Clearly what you need are Land Battleships with ship cannons. (Or Tank ones if you want something that works)
EE would you ever consider taking user fighters and bombers/ tanks? And for the sake of the "RP" you could call us defense contractors
You need to install some turrets on the planes facing downward at an angle, or on the sides, or on a moveable platform. That way you won't have to aim the cockpit at the enemies to fire.
Finally! WE have been waiting. Also, I haven't even seen the video yet, but I know that at least 1 kerbal was killed in the making of this video.
Fun fact.. The A-10's gun is so integrated into the flight platform, that when ground crew remove the cannon to service it, they have to mount a "kickstand" on to the tail otherwise it would tip backwards.
4 years later still lovin this
Ah one of the best KSP series is back! :D
Make a giant tank!
Several guns, one giant artillery gun, a few AA guns, and stuff!
You should make a kerbal-less rocket with a payload on the front. You can launch it from the launch pad and not the runway. Basically just a guided rocket....
When in doubt, use part clipping.
-EnterElysium, 2015
Wow, the A10 sure is "completely designed around" a lot of stuff...

One way to fix this tank problem... Cluster impact missile! Kind of like the hellstorm from bo2. Another idea is a high velocity high strength physicless part launched like a rail gun from a distance.
I suggest a land front. build a carrier plane, load a tank of sorts in, fly over and 'chute the tank over and blast the MechJeb tanks as best you can.
On a side note you've managed to build the best tanks ever.
Going with the theme of older planes, it's obvious that he needs to build a B-52.
oh did i forget to mention that the secret d4 cannon on the mecjeb space station is about to fire at the kerben resistance station (aka DK 9) save them or where going to have a short war.
Next try a crusier type warship to bombard land and sea threats. As well have gun/missile deffence.
You forgot the decoupling pylons for the engine nacelles. The ONE stock KSP part that ACTUALLY is perfect for an A-10 clone! :)
wow what an amazing video and channel! subbed hard!
KSP physics can’t handle the greatness of the A-10
2:10,it looks like a v1- "buzz bomb" without the engine
0:14 state of the art is an over statement
You should try a stratofortress type design with cruise missiles. It would definitely give you the fire power you need.
"Tan beats everything!" Halo 2 quote.
It's time for plan 'K'....AMPHIBIOUS TAAAAAANKS!!!
A-10 Warthog, the Emperor approves.
EE awesome video i think you should build a apache style gunship to takee down the tanks
Use the new tools in the editor, you can place the cannons on the fuselage and use the move tool so they'll keep pointing forward..
The new tools are really handy!!
Pardon the late post but I think you should make a short ranged missle platform. So you can take the tanks out then rescue the hostages.
I'm not sure but I think the design of the wing frame comes from the Wellington WWII medium/torpedo bomber.
A good ground support plane is a ac-130. If you ever need one.
Here is my suggestion. I feel you should make an Mi 24 hind and use its' light troop transport ability for evac while also using its' gunship ability for air support. or an MH 60L dap Black Hawk just for gunship, and you need more Dakka on your planes
The A-10 is easily my favorite plane
Your problem is because your main wing alerions are made to pitch they are only meant to roll. The alerions are acually pushing your craft down.
EE has inadvertently built BOLO's for Mech Jeb
build a space laser if possible, see them avoid that!
You could've angle those wings up so that they counter the engines that are placed above the centre of mass
Yeah...those steel plates you covered those with I'm pretty sure are indestructible.... Or at least close to it. I've seen a ship covered in those survive crashing from orbit.
Fuck yes! More WWK please! Favorite series by far for me.
use tanks that are absolutely gigantic, give them missles, give them guns, give them armor! **insane laughter** or hire that luftrausers guy...
I think EXALT kitty is crossing into the World War K universe. Or Danny is making the tanks immune to attack.
Perhaps build a fighter with 40 missiles on it. Another idea: Rocket Artillery.
the a10 also keeps the shells inside of it because it would mess with its center of mass
Try the UH-60 Black Hawk with more powerful weapons to inflict more damage
Your just going to have to do a good old fashion tank battle
I say you make a battlesuit, you need the dexterity of Kerbal boots on the ground to deal with these things.
MechJeb knows how to build armour...
Suggestion on a build: make a A39 turtoise tank. The name says all btw. Slow 228 mm of armor in front in real life. 5 were built and at least one is fully functioning today
it is a peashooter that shoots some deadly peas fast
Note : Use bombs. Also, the A-10's 30mm Gau-8 Avenger cannon was slightly angled downward so the pilot didn't need to stay in a constant dive.
More explosive bombs
With the A-10 if you were to put 2 GAUs on it it would start accelerating backwards when you fired them.
You should make a C-130 Goliath, or the Galaxy plane that is even bigger, and airdrop either a MOAB, a tank destroyer/sniper tank, or maybe an artillery setup. :3
