  • Hi-Def Norfolk Southern’s Horseshoe Curve and Juniata Shops on 08/18/2014. First train on the curve was an e/b high and wide. A bunch of assembled and un-assembled Cat equipment up front and 10 GE export engines and their 4 axle trucks on flat cars trailing. (Units are destined for Mozambique via Lambert’s Point in Norfolk, Va. They are Cape gauge BB40-9WM for CLN, a Vale subsidiary in Mozambique (East Africa). Vale intends to use them in fours, pulling 10,000 ton plus coal trains from Moatize on the Zambezi River, to the port of Nacala on the Indian Ocean). Some good stuff at Juniata too. A UP Centennial, Executive Power, a few SD80macs, Spy shot of the NS GE rebuild with the Admiral cab. Video by Craig Sturgeon, Photos by Angelina and Craig, CP SD40-2 sound by Steve Hay. If you like our stuff, Please comment and/or subscribe!

    Nice catch.
These full size American loco's on cape gauge must look amazing, because their loading gauge is larger than anything else on cape gauge, South African loading gauge is apr. the same as the European old UIC gauge, which was already large on cape gauge, as Asia and Australia/NZ have a narrower loading gauge on their cape gauge systems. (comparable with UK profile or even narrower)
(European loading gauge is larger now, UIC G-2 clearance, and new lines are buildt with a loading gauge (GC) comparable with AAR plate C, the height of catenary wires does not allow much higher)
That scale test car must be the size of a British coal wagon as used until the 80's, you won't see much other four wheel vehicles on any US railroad.

Ted Cartwright Depends on the customer and where it's going. A lot of exports are different gauge than US 4'8.5". Those obviously cannot be shipped on their own wheels. It's also possible that the couplers are different (UK buffer and chain couplings for example) but the gauge matches, they also have to be shipped on flats because nothing here will couple to them.

8:39 those locos there getting scrapped or whatever, they tore them apart! there where three full locos there when i was there just one month before you! but great catch here! all those exports and everything was amazing to see all in one train like that cause that isnt an every day thing.
when i was there i saw the DDA40X and that wabash streamliner and the NS F's but you got the rebuild conrail which is great! (not great that it is now an SD60E to be NS colors)

Craig, that was just a great video. You caught so many rare things, the exports, the NS executives, exhibit cars, and of course the DDA40X!! (I think that's right, lol) And did you know that in the picture with the CSX sd40-2, on the other side of the NS unit behind it, you can spot the top of a blue locomotive. That loco was the very LAST Conrail painted engine that NS has. You might not have recognized it because of the ugly ass cab that NS has put on it. Its a shame that NS couldn't keep just one CR engine, especially when they praise their railroads' history. Well, I'm done ranting, haha! Overall a great video!
