botw soundtrack sounds ALIVE I had no idea it was so hated. I loved it! When I was first playing it I was suffering from LOTS of anxiety (covid was happening) and I would just crouch in a field and listen to the music.
So, its complicated. Botw's soundtrack was perfect for what the game was going for. However, as standalone pieces, not so much. Zelda music is some of the most covered video game music of all time, except for botw. Its hated bc its so different from the memorable melodies the rest of the series is so famous for. And people, blinded by nostalgia, do not like change. I see both sides of the argument, but botw thrives on ambience and thats exactly what the music focuses on. The point of video game music is to assist the video game and botw's music works perfectly to that end.

If anything, I wouldn't say its music would have many entries for a list like this, because the complaint more often relates to what isn't there, not what is. I do, however, miss having the more involved pieces at least for certain points in the game, Breath's excellent Hyrule Castle theme being a good example of what I wanted to hear more of. I suppose I would also criticize Tears of the Kingdom's reuse of things, like the horse and battle music. I played a DLC for a game around that time and even that 10 hour or so DLC had a really good new battle theme. I dunno why you wouldn't make a new one for a whole new game as grand in scale as Tears was. To be fair, although I don't care for the BotW regular battle theme, it's not alone. There are a couple other enemy battle themes I don't think much of in the series.
100% agree with you! I understand enjoying more "epic" soundtracks found in the previous games, but that's what makes BOTW's so good! You can listen to the most relaxing, ambient track, and all of a sudden have a sick boss fight with a killer soundtrack! I find TOTK has a similar phenomenon!
@@Tiepobadaae Pretty much agree, but you can't really blame a lot of the nostalgia factor when every other game in the series had a banger overworld theme. BotW's Overworld theme might work for its supposed playstyle and exploration purposes, but you can't expect everyone to like it just for that reason alone.
I kinda wish you had just let the songs play for 10-20 seconds after you talked about them, just so we could hear them without you talking over them. Otherwise great video
10:25 tbh I think this is one of my favorite songs because it fits perfectly with the twilight realm on how it would make sense for the flashy black specs. (That's what the song makes me think of)
The Twilit Battle theme from Twilight Princess is such an eerie and creepy piece of music... twilight princess was my very first zelda game and as a 10 year old i really, REALLY, hated this theme. It made me so scared, I never played the game when it was so dark outside because i didnt want to fight with that theme in the background xD

I don't know if you remember this one, but Din's Power (Harp) from Skyward Sword is genuinely terrible (imo). Sounds like a harp being tortured while Fi tries to salvage the song but failing at it.
You have a zelda phase. Zelda holds a special place in my heart becuase twilight princess was my first ever proper video game (my 7 year old brain back then was somehow able to make it all the way to the Temple of time Dungeon and beat it. Well that's probably cuz my older brother would always watch me play) and before you ask I'm still terrified of that one cut scene that plays after you beat the lakebed temple. And I finally beat Twilight Princess on a GameCube emulator this year.
For Skyward Sword, the Lanayru Mining Facility theme is good and fun but gets irritating quickly for me, especially if I am trying to figure out a puzzle and the theme keeps repeating.
The "voice-like" sound is a Cuica, a Brazilian percussion instrument that was also used (albeit in a now archaic MIDI form) for Goron City in Ocarina of Time.
As I've listened to more traditional Japanese music over recent years, I have to admit that I have a much greater appreciation for the Kamaro flute. It still makes my ears bleed, but like, I get it

@@Ryan64yt let me tell you a story, when I was 3 years old I played my very first Video Game New Super Mario Bros Wii, I had a lot of fun playing it and got really good at the Game when I was 4, but by the time I turned 5 my older brother came home with a new Wii Game one that would truly put my skills as a new Gamer to the test and that Game was The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, the moment I started the Game and got to the title screen it was complete silence until the screen turned to black and The Game showed a teaser of what was to come while playing the Ballad of the Goddess, it was right there at that moment I knew that I was in for one Hell of an Adventure, and still to this day Skyward Sword is my favorite Zelda Game and Ballad of the Goddess is my favorite Zelda theme.

BOTW and TOTK have good osts because they're supposed to be minimalist with their progression. If they were the exact same as every other game, it would've really hurt the games
I love the piano based minimalist soundtrack for the field, it's really the only way that it could have been done without becoming tiresome. My biggest problem with the soundtrack was that all of the blights and Ganon's fight all sound so blandly similar. A game with such a small amount of music moment to moment should have had an enormously epic set of boss themes.

The worst song of Zelda II is the Japanese boss theme, because the loop is too short so it's really repetitive. And often you hear a really annoying roar over it. The western one is actually quite good.
I don't think the cold ambience is a very controversial choice at all. I remember when we got a gameplay preview of TotK, and a lot of people were disappointed to hear the same repetitive cold ambience that we'd already spent hundreds of hours listening to in BotW. Me included.
Honestly the soundtrack of Phantom Hourglass is pretty bad. Most of the OSTs are actually really good but there are like 5 of them in total in the entire game. 50% of the time youre hearing the dungeon OST which is actually trash and the other 50% consists of the remaining 4 songs that are left (ocean, hostile island, friendly island and npc house/shop). The only exceptions I remember of were straight up ripped from previous titles like OOT or WW. The game is really fun but its soundtrack might be the weakest one in the entire series.
I didn't notice it much on my first play-through because I was really enjoying the game, but yeah, it has some extremely short, simplistic, repetitive tunes. The overworld action theme is probably the worst, just 4 notes (and the 4th is same as the 2nd) over and over. At least the dungeon song has a slight key change at one point.

While I tentatively agree with the TP pick, I remember it really fondly (vividly? Eerily? I dont know if fond is the right word) because of how good the sound design pairs with it. Something about it being layered under the screech of twili kargarocs and wolf link's growls always made it stand out positively to me. It might not be a great track, but it's strangely fitting.

I actually love the twilight battle theme, it really fits the other-worldly feeling of the twilight creatures. Malo Mart is much more grating to me. The melody is pretty good but the background sounds kinda kill it.
Older Zelda songs are big and epic or intense because there are a lot of big, epic or intense moments. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are so open that you don't have constant big events in your face so they need themes that fit😊 good or bad, Nintendo picks music that fits the moment
Really cool and principled list - you were also good at pointing out when a track was genuinely bad, or just the least good out of an otherwise great batch. Also, gotta say, you're probably one of the few who has a fond impression of Phantom Hourglass' music. It's pretty notorious for having some really repetitive parts. Hate to be that ERM ACHUALLY guy, but that theme's not specific to that dungeon. It's the theme for EVERY. SINGLE. DUNGEON. I have a lot of bias towards the DS games, i think they're overhated, but not even i can defend PH on that, it's one of the most annoying songs in Zelda, especially because you'll be hearing it A LOT. That's a big issue of PH, the OST isn't that bad, but the bad songs are the ones you're gonna be hearing the most

I knew that for TP it was going to be one of the Battle themes, though I expected it to be the regular one (mostly cuz it cuts off Midnas lament so much)
I love Skyward Sword's OST, but picking the worst track is easy. It's Scrapper's theme. Also, I'm sure few will agree with me, but I can't stand the Gerudo Desert theme from Twilight Princess. The MIDI samples sound awful and the guitar plucking gets on my nerves. Not the worst track but easily the most annoying to me.
If I had a least-favorite song in Majora's Mask, it's that game's version of Ballad of the Windfish. The different instruments just do not gel together, they barely sound like they're even in the same time signature, and it's obvious they needed to come up with 4 parts that don't sound too close to any of the other playable songs. At least Kamaro's Song is cohesive, if bland.
I always appreciated the Guardian Acorn/Piece of Power theme in LA as if you pick it up in a dungeon (Key Cavern for example) it overrides the current theme playing. Though the game has great music for how limited the hardware was and I honestly can't recall a good amount of the dungeon themes, the GA/PoP gives a sense of excitement through backtracking something like Face Shrine or Catfish's Maw. For me - I never liked the mini-boss theme in LA as it's too nerve wracking and when in Turtle Rock you end up hearing that constantly as you traverse to and from.
It might be a stretch for me to mention that The Silly Pink Rabbit is very very vaguely showcased in Tears of the Kingdom: Lookout Landing. Maybe i'm just hearing things. maybe i just love the theme.
_The Legend of Zelda_ : There are like three songs in the entire game, so I'm gonna say the dungeon theme. I don't even dislike it, I just prefer the overworld theme. _Ocarina of Time_ : I'm gonna say Dodongo's Cavern/Death Mountain Crater because it just sounds like a giant monster breathing and not an actual song. _The Wind Waker_ : That music that plays in Outset's forest and Hyrule Field that's basically two brass notes played at odd times. _Twilight Princess_ : Maybe the chase music that plays when you take a Sol in the Palace of Twilight. _Breath of the Wild_ : I hate to say it, but probably the overworld music. It's barely even there. _Tears of the Kingdom_ : Maybe the music in the Depths.
I'm glad you did not choose rhe cavern theme feom ALTTP because its such an iconic track that it was even featured in Majoras Mask as an easter egg. (Every memver of the Zora band plays a song from anorher game when you visit them in their rooms and the drummer plays the cavern theme)
Breath of the Wild is a game I feel like I played on mute. I don't remember any songs from it aside from maybe the stable theme and Kass's theme (if I'm even remembering them correctly). It may as well have been entirely ambiance sfx and nothing else. Breath of the Wild and by extension TotK does not have a soundtrack as far as I'm concerned. There's nothing there Id want to go back to.
Phantom's hourglass' main dungeon u had to return to was very annoying because pain and suffering of that dungeon, and my arm getting sore. If i have a kid in the future and it misbehaves, im gonna make them go thru the dungeon to reprimand them

I DESPISE "Cold Temperatures" because it just plays CONSTANTLY the SECOND you enter a freezing area. Which really sucks the fun out of exploring the various mountains. Like, really? They couldn't add at least one or two variations? I get that it's annoying so you're encouraged to leave the freezing weather, but come on...

I like the Forsaken Fortress music. Closest thing I feel there is to that track is the “A Beast in the Village” track from Twilight Princess, where you sneak around Ordon Village in wolf form. Love stealthy music.

@@Ryan64yt let me tell you a story, when I was 3 years old I played my very first Video Game New Super Mario Bros Wii, I had a lot of fun playing it and got really good at the Game when I was 4, but by the time I turned 5 my older brother came home with a new Wii Game one that would truly put my skills as a new Gamer to the test and that Game was The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, the moment I started the Game and got to the title screen it was complete silence until the screen turned to black and The Game showed a teaser of what was to come while playing the Ballad of the Goddess, it was right there at that moment I knew that I was in for one Hell of an Adventure, and still to this day Skyward Sword is my favorite Zelda Game and Ballad of the Goddess is my favorite Zelda theme.

That Oracle of Ages one also drove me nuts. I remember that being one of the longer dungeons for me in that game and the high ting noise was murderous.

i really thought the dungeon theme from phantom hourglass was gonna be the worst one. it's the same in every dungeon and super repetitive. PH is actually usually slammed as the worst soundtrack in the series, even though it's a very fun game

BOTW and TOTK have good osts because they're supposed to be minimalist with their progression. If they were the exact same as every other game, it would've really hurt the games
I love the piano based minimalist soundtrack for the field, it's really the only way that it could have been done without becoming tiresome. My biggest problem with the soundtrack was that all of the blights and Ganon's fight all sound so blandly similar. A game with such a small amount of music moment to moment should have had an enormously epic set of boss themes.

The worst song of Zelda II is the Japanese boss theme, because the loop is too short so it's really repetitive. And often you hear a really annoying roar over it. The western one is actually quite good.
I don't think the cold ambience is a very controversial choice at all. I remember when we got a gameplay preview of TotK, and a lot of people were disappointed to hear the same repetitive cold ambience that we'd already spent hundreds of hours listening to in BotW. Me included.
Honestly the soundtrack of Phantom Hourglass is pretty bad. Most of the OSTs are actually really good but there are like 5 of them in total in the entire game. 50% of the time youre hearing the dungeon OST which is actually trash and the other 50% consists of the remaining 4 songs that are left (ocean, hostile island, friendly island and npc house/shop). The only exceptions I remember of were straight up ripped from previous titles like OOT or WW. The game is really fun but its soundtrack might be the weakest one in the entire series.
Oh yeah theres the cave theme too. A 4 second loop of peak.
I didn't notice it much on my first play-through because I was really enjoying the game, but yeah, it has some extremely short, simplistic, repetitive tunes. The overworld action theme is probably the worst, just 4 notes (and the 4th is same as the 2nd) over and over. At least the dungeon song has a slight key change at one point.
Obviously the worst song in skyward sword is the guardian theme. Reason?

While I tentatively agree with the TP pick, I remember it really fondly (vividly? Eerily? I dont know if fond is the right word) because of how good the sound design pairs with it. Something about it being layered under the screech of twili kargarocs and wolf link's growls always made it stand out positively to me. It might not be a great track, but it's strangely fitting.
Checking in after that chill stream. The clip of MM Link dancing faceless is nightmare fuel.

I actually love the twilight battle theme, it really fits the other-worldly feeling of the twilight creatures. Malo Mart is much more grating to me. The melody is pretty good but the background sounds kinda kill it.
Older Zelda songs are big and epic or intense because there are a lot of big, epic or intense moments. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are so open that you don't have constant big events in your face so they need themes that fit😊 good or bad, Nintendo picks music that fits the moment

Hate to be that ERM ACHUALLY guy, but that theme's not specific to that dungeon. It's the theme for EVERY. SINGLE. DUNGEON. I have a lot of bias towards the DS games, i think they're overhated, but not even i can defend PH on that, it's one of the most annoying songs in Zelda, especially because you'll be hearing it A LOT. That's a big issue of PH, the OST isn't that bad, but the bad songs are the ones you're gonna be hearing the most

Call me crazy but i liked the twilit battle soundtrack because of the creepy vibes it gave off it really felt like I'm in a twisted shadow realm fighting those monstrosities that might have been normal beings
I knew that for TP it was going to be one of the Battle themes, though I expected it to be the regular one (mostly cuz it cuts off Midnas lament so much)

I love Skyward Sword's OST, but picking the worst track is easy. It's Scrapper's theme.
Also, I'm sure few will agree with me, but I can't stand the Gerudo Desert theme from Twilight Princess. The MIDI samples sound awful and the guitar plucking gets on my nerves. Not the worst track but easily the most annoying to me.

If I had a least-favorite song in Majora's Mask, it's that game's version of Ballad of the Windfish. The different instruments just do not gel together, they barely sound like they're even in the same time signature, and it's obvious they needed to come up with 4 parts that don't sound too close to any of the other playable songs. At least Kamaro's Song is cohesive, if bland.

I always appreciated the Guardian Acorn/Piece of Power theme in LA as if you pick it up in a dungeon (Key Cavern for example) it overrides the current theme playing. Though the game has great music for how limited the hardware was and I honestly can't recall a good amount of the dungeon themes, the GA/PoP gives a sense of excitement through backtracking something like Face Shrine or Catfish's Maw.
For me - I never liked the mini-boss theme in LA as it's too nerve wracking and when in Turtle Rock you end up hearing that constantly as you traverse to and from.
It might be a stretch for me to mention that The Silly Pink Rabbit is very very vaguely showcased in Tears of the Kingdom: Lookout Landing. Maybe i'm just hearing things. maybe i just love the theme.

_The Legend of Zelda_ : There are like three songs in the entire game, so I'm gonna say the dungeon theme. I don't even dislike it, I just prefer the overworld theme.
_Ocarina of Time_ : I'm gonna say Dodongo's Cavern/Death Mountain Crater because it just sounds like a giant monster breathing and not an actual song.
_The Wind Waker_ : That music that plays in Outset's forest and Hyrule Field that's basically two brass notes played at odd times.
_Twilight Princess_ : Maybe the chase music that plays when you take a Sol in the Palace of Twilight.
_Breath of the Wild_ : I hate to say it, but probably the overworld music. It's barely even there.
_Tears of the Kingdom_ : Maybe the music in the Depths.
I'm glad you did not choose rhe cavern theme feom ALTTP because its such an iconic track that it was even featured in Majoras Mask as an easter egg. (Every memver of the Zora band plays a song from anorher game when you visit them in their rooms and the drummer plays the cavern theme)

Breath of the Wild is a game I feel like I played on mute. I don't remember any songs from it aside from maybe the stable theme and Kass's theme (if I'm even remembering them correctly). It may as well have been entirely ambiance sfx and nothing else.
Breath of the Wild and by extension TotK does not have a soundtrack as far as I'm concerned. There's nothing there Id want to go back to.

Phantom's hourglass' main dungeon u had to return to was very annoying because pain and suffering of that dungeon, and my arm getting sore. If i have a kid in the future and it misbehaves, im gonna make them go thru the dungeon to reprimand them
