The rulers of Frankia/Neustria, Austrasia and Soissons were the Merovingians. They rules the region of upper France after the western Roman Empire fell. At around the year 625, Charlemagne’s ancestors attained the title of ‘Mayor of the Palace’. They were basically prime ministers. But soon, they became the true rulers of the realm, having the Merovingians as puppet kings. Charles Martel, Charlemagne’s Grandfather was the first of the Carolingians to become king after deposing the Merovingians. Charlemagne was the first ruler to receive the title of Emperor. The pope crowned him because of his nations size, and the fact that a woman (Irene of Athens) was ruler of the Byzantine Empire.
Edit: In the original comment, I stated that Charlemagne’s ancestors gained the title ‘Mayor of the Palace’ around 700. That is wrong, it is actually around 625 C.E.

Ayy, nice synopsis, but I feel like I should mention: Charles Martel was never king. That honor would go to his son, Pepin the Short, who as mayor of the palace struck up an agreement with the pope to send the last Merovingian king to a monastery and crown him as king instead.

The Byzantines have been collapsing a lot recently in my games, and I'm seeing that other youtubers are also having this happen in their recent videos. Maybe the new patch changed something and the Byzantines just got pummeled or something went wrong?

    • @iusedtobearaccoononceupona3514

dissolution faction destroys the empire title. I think they need to change it and give it certain conditions to be available instead of always being a thing that can happen, cause it's a little silly to see a stable byzantium just explode because enough people didn't like the emperor or something.

@@iusedtobearaccoononceupona3514 I think it was a really good faction to add, but it should only fire for decentralized realms (in catholic Europe, India or tribal regions), the Byzantines and muslims shouldn't have that since state structures need the state to stay unified, the regular independence faction is enough for them. Dissolution is mostly usefull for tribal empires that quickly blob out of proportions while clearly not being stable or for some western european kingdoms that tend to have a bunch of land because of inheritance (it also somehwat mirrors what happened to the HRE, most notably in Italy where local states become de facto independent after defeating the Hohenstaufen...). When the game progresses and some regions become more centralized (like France after Philippe II or ENgland after William the conqueror) this faction should stop firing after the state has done some administrative reforms...

    • @Alex_Fahey
      @Alex_Fahey ปีที่แล้ว +3

@iusedtobearaccoononce uponatime Titles also get destroyed if the title owner has all his personal counties taken in a war but not the higher titles. You usually see this with dukes that have a single county. The duke's last personal county is taken in a county conquest (or revoked in a civil war), then all his vassals are set free by the duchy being destroyed. I think this could have happened to the ERE if the succession was chaotic enough. Theoretically, the emperor took the main title (via vote, claimant faction, or otherwise) but had only one county on the border. If, for example, the Abbasid Caliphate was already at war for that county when he ascended to the throne or the AI bugged amd he refused to take Constantinople for some reason, then the empire died as soon as that province was taken.

There are other moments like that. If Rostam Farrokhzad had decided to take a nap one meter further to the left during a sandstorm the muslims might never have conquered Mesopotamia and Iran... What ended up happening is a muslim soldier came by while trying to find a shelter, saw an iranian horse, decided to cut its stirups to make it harder for its owner to climb upon it (iranian horsemen where in full mail armor so it was indeed difficult to without them or a servant), unfortunately for the iranians, their general was sleeping under it and got killed because his equipment fell on his head (he had tied it to his saddle while sleeping)... And this general happened to be the head of one of the two major factions of iranian nobles, the other one being completely incompetent... Thus the empire started to collapse... Iran actually experienced that twice since Alexander nearly died multiple times at Granicus, Krateros saved him several times I think.
I believe many countries histories have such pivotal moments that often rest on quite dumb factors...

I was playing as the Seljuks and when I declared war on Byzantium for the third time, during a Byzantine civil war, and then while I was attacking the civil war ended and the guy who was in charge when I attacked a second time came back to power and then another civil war broke off and they just fell, all before I was able to win the war.

I have a theory for why Byzantium fell. I have observed that when the only province of a duke is taken, his duchy falls apart. It may be the same with larger titles. If the Byzantine Emperor only holds one county and that county is taken, but not his empire title, the empire will simply dissolve.

From there I see which familial line creates the greatest rulers of my dynasty. So Eudes' younger brother became count. He was a good general and conquered the Duchy of Burgundy and then was assassinated. Herbert's grandson then finally took away the french crown from his liege and he was the first character in this campaign, who died of old age. Unfortunately, i didn't conquer all required territories because got bored while grinding through german part of HRE.

Aight so I know this probably won’t get slammed up to the top and is ludicrous anyway, but it’s only 6hrs since Post so it *might* end up being done, and for that I’ll laugh.
So my idea, ballsy as it is, is as such:
Restore the Roman Empire, but as a member of Hæsteinn Hæsteinning’s dynasty from the 867 start. I can confirm it is possible, the origin of my idea for this challenge came from one of my early playthroughs of the game with all dlcs.
    Is it difficult? Y e s
I did not succeed the first time as I got piled on by a liberty war, title destruction war and war from the Byzantines all simultaneously, but I did come close by way of forming an intermediary empire title to secure the land without needing to kill my kids (spoiler I didn’t do it at any point so I had about ~300 members of the dynasty and 18 houses by 1100)
    Is it fun? Also y e s
    Let me explain my playthrough:
    Started up
Did a Varangian Adventure against the Pope, won by merit of the huge amount of special troops Hæsteinn gets
Got almost killed by the entirety of Europe noticing the Eternal City wasn’t controlled by a Catholic, converted to Catholicism before that Holy War of like 10:1 game ended me
Formed a hybrid Norse-Italian culture (called it Italiensk, call my use of Google Translate creative if you will), over the next 300+ years would come to be about ~40% of the italian peninsula
Kept needing to do claim wars against my siblings because I hadn’t killed the half a dozen brothers each kid had by merit of fertility rates
Went on 5 holy wars (Africa: failed, Jerusalem: failed, England: succeeded, got a family member on the throne of the 2nd most powerful resultant title, they eventually became King of England and their house was still in power 200 odd years later, Jerusalem 2: failed, Jerusalem 3: failed (Jer2 & Jer3 both each had multiple times more soldiers fielded on each individual side than the entirety of the 3rd Crusade did on both sides))
Accidentally vassalised a state in Iberia, proceeded to fight the entire Arab world in the west on half a dozen separate occasions as they wished to take my 3 counties there (they never succeeded)
And a few other things that I’d like to say I’m not gonna talk about for brevity but frankly this is not brief in the slightest
I give my thanks to TH-cam that I can type this incessantly about random Ck3 stuff (take notes Discord), and hope that maybe, just maybe, Laith sees this at some point, even if he does nothing on it.
    Aight bye ✌️

There’s a decision to restore carolingian borders if you’re the emperor of Frankia in the 1066 start date, but you can’t be the holy Roman emperor i don’t think

Could you play as a descendant of the prophet in Islam and try to unite all the Muslims under one banner and then expand into Europe and demolish the papacy? It seems like a good challenge of your ck3 skill if you pulled it off. Plus it could become a multi video campaign

14:50 - yeah that's a mood, and why I always prefer playing men over women. If you play men, you can help along the process of your son's (and grandson's if need be) wives getting with a good heir even into old age. Your sons and/or grandsons might hate you for making them raise their half brother/uncle as a son, but maybe they just should have slept with their wives if they didn't want their wives to cheat on them with their ancestor.

There is a decision available to islamic rulers, to "Avenge the Battle of Tours". Count Karl was the commander who defeated the Umayyad Caliphate at that battle.
