I’m the best friend of one of yawl’s biggest fans & commenters Ben Parrish. We are two nigh-40 yr olds that have been writing a 4 novel series “The Norseman Saga” that we hope to self-publish by September of 2024
Nashville in the building
Sal's entire getting into comics monologue is just the origin story for his hunting down of the Bloodlines event.
its his villain origin story lol
It's true. That's kinda how it was for everything before trades were everywhere. How I started too.
I loved just watched Tiff's face as she realized where her life had lead her.
I was dead XD
15:40 for anyone who wants the instant replay
As sad as it is now with his passing, I can’t hear Alan Grant’s name without thinking of Ben saying “the man who’s neither Alan Moore or Grant Morrison”.
Tiffany: "don't ever do this again"
Sal: "The work is done. It always will be."
So before there was the three Jokers there was the four Clayfaces.
The original villains
Sal explaining his journey with comics and this show was hilarious.
Killed me XD
I loved it
A missed opportunity for DC to call them Clay-Force
Sal’s rant about the best way to get into comics is sooo good and accurate. Gotta clip that one asap
I definitely thought I was getting into Green Lantern at the ground floor with the New 52 🤡. I ended up on that exact journey. Lol
That was 9 year old me when I had parts five, six and eight of Ultimate Clone Saga
i think this is my favorite episode of back issues now
I felt that journey into comics. So funny and so accurate
Can totally agree with Sal! That was hilarious
"Then youll have to tell your wife and best friend all about it!"
Ethan: *Sheds single tear*
15:55-16:45 is arguably a top 10 ComicPop best moment tbh
I literally did not see where he was going with that until we were there.
Well, Tom King... War of Puppets and Clay. New ComicPOP challenge. I dare you. 🤣
I know the other Clayfaces are iconic for being full on clay people, but I feel that the Preston Payne Clayface is underrated. He's just so 'weird', but in a way that would make for a great horror comic. Also, RIP Alan Grant. We lost another giant.
Absolutely, if they're going to put Clayface in the movies I hope its Payne, portrayed similarly to the Arkham Asylum: A Serious House version.
I always liked Payne's character, but he never seemed like a "Clayface". Maybe he can pop up again under another name.
Preston Payne is basically mano from the fatal five
One of my favourite versions of Clayface is from The Batman 2004 series whose name is Ethan Bennett and is an old friend of Bruce Wayne's and is an entirely original character for the show. Are you guys familiar with it? While not as good as the Animated Series, some characters like Catwoman, Hugo Strange, Batgirl and surprisingly Firefly are actually much better handled than in the animated series.
Oh yeah, I remember that show. It was alright.
Thank you for being someone who remembers The Batman.
Thank you, I also thought the animated series never really got the best handle on Catwoman. The “ Batman for the animals“ was always a weird concept, and by the time they got around to telling better Catwoman stories, it was around the fourth season with that weird redesigned… The Batman cartoon had a pretty cool Catwoman
2004 was my Batman. i love it more than BTAS
Ethan Bennett had the best arc of that show
“The mudpack” the story to break Sal to the point he tells his comic collecting life story
This is the only comic channel where you can be having a serious discussion about Batman and then 20 seconds later have a random tangent on Jurassic Park. I love this show.
Your user name is the stuff of legends
Thank you sir.
Alan Grant (R.I.P.) and Norm Breyfogle are definitely one of my favorite duos to work on Batman, with this definitely being a highlight of their tenure on the character. However, my favorite Batman story of theirs is probably the first appearance of the Ratcatcher. That is one seriously underrated tale and character.
I’m disappointed that at not one point in the story all the Clayface’s don’t morph together into a giant tidal wave and try to drown Gotham in a… Mudslide… still a fun story though
I hope this story doesn't get too "muddled" in it's characters ( that's the best I had )
@@jonasquinn7977 they really muddied the waters with this episode.
You got a chuckle out of me
@@anthonyjr9722 I try :)
Was that a dirty joke? (I gotta at least try for the pun)
that one hurt me. thank you may I have another?
This episode just reminded me that Alan Moore wrote that Batman annual featuring Preston Payne and his relationship with Helena. That story is legit great.
There's no justification for calling Preston Payne a bad character when that issue exists. And his debut arc by Len Wein is great too.
Credit to Tif for keeping a straight face through Sal's rant. I was dying because I knew where he was going, but you played it totally straight while Ben was losing his shit. 🤣
You guys covering these older stories like Contagion, Prodigal, Ten Nights of the Beast, etc have made me appreciate this classic blue and grey suit with the yellow oval. I used to think it was goofy compared to the Black and grey but I really like it now.
15:52 Sal casually describing my life in comics circa 1998. Minus the show of course
Clayface always seemed like a bizarre Batman villain. I mean we have a bunch of insane genius psychopathic humans and the next cell is a highly adept shape shifting mud monster.
And next to him is a mutant crocodile-man, and a lady who controls plants, and a guy who dresses up like a moth, etc. Batman’s rogues gallery has always been weird.
You are aware that Bruce's technical father in law is an immortal demon ninja?
@@NoBody-lj5xh I am. It just seems Batman tends to have a type of an insane person in a two piece suit.
@@chrisdaily2077 I mean...it's not like Joker, Two-Face or The Penguin are "normal" or "grounded" just because they happen to wear suits.
The Preston Payne and mannequin story was written by Alan Moore
Preston Payne will always hold a special place in my mudpit for the simple fact Lein created him with Rogers Mudpack for me is just pure comic book goodness.
I almost spit out my applesauce!!! "Clay my dear doctor! Clay is happening to me!"
Okay Sal, I completely love your best way to get into comics tangents. That is exactly how I got into comics. This is the second time you brought it up recently. I think we need a full comic pop returns video or CBR article devoted to this topic.
I actually sent the last one to my mom who taught for 20 years, has become a private tutor, and teaches English and writing. One of her elementary students loves graphic novels. So I made a clip of you talking about single issues sparking the imagination and sent it to her because it sounds like a great learning and writing activity for her student.
16:31 - 16:46 Ben is my exact reaction
Every time I think of Clayface, I think of the one from Arkham City. I would love to see Matt Reeves’ version of Clayface in a Batman sequel.
7:57- as a fan of The Flash, yes Ben. You are 100% correct about STAR Labs.
There is an Alan Moore story on Clayface III and his insane love affair with the manequin Helena published in 1986/1987 in an Annual...would be a fun follow-up on his, hitting several points raised and much debated on your couch (Alan Moore + Clayface III + the bewildering pseudo-sexual affair with an inanimate object).
It is unfortunate how very little Clayface appears in the Arkham games, but the design was kinda cool. Besides BTAS, he's rarely that interesting in the comics. Imagine if Joker wasn't getting overused often and other baddies got the spotlight. I'm sure some talented writers can make real magic happen.
He was pretty Cool in the batman
Holy shit the getting into comics rant just made my entire week lmao
Sal's getting into comics monologue is 100% the way it happens for the average comics fan....minus his autobiographical success story at the end.
The Mud Pack all share a collective brain cell, and that brain cell's coming from Matt Hagen.
I only know of them because they were mentioned in my "Batman: The Ultimate Guide to the DC Comics Superhero" and Batman: Arkham Asylum. Even then, DC were so proud of the idea.
Dear gosh, I remember that guide! I used to read it constantly at my school library.
Nice to see some love for the other Clayfaces. I keep forgetting there's been so many of them, since Basil's probably the most well-known of the bunch. I did enjoy Basil's semi-redemption arc in the pages of Tynion's Tec run and Ram V's Catwoman run, but I do wish Matt Hagen, Lady Clayface, or even Preston Payne could share the spotlight every once in a while.
It occurs to me that what Gotham really needs is Code Enforcement. I mean if you just tear down all the abandoned amusement parks, movie theaters, toy factories......etc. These guys would not have such easy access to lairs.
I mean there's a housing shortage and that's what drives them all to Gotham and why they just do not leave for greener pastures.
Tiffany looking into the distance, disassociating while Sal and Ben are thinking up the "War Of Clay & Puppets", was extremely funny. Especially when it ended with "and then [Clayface 3 and 4] had a kid together"
58:57 The split-screen of shame. Beautiful.
This is sounding like one of those comics that reminds you how goofy comics could be
And how good you had it watching Batman the Animated Series when you were a kid. How lucky I was to get BTAS at the right time.
I mean... Sal's not wrong on how to get into comics. I inherited a bunch of 90s-early 00s books from my step-mom's brother and there were some gems in there. Dude had the entire FF vs. X-Men series and a four-part storyline where the Batfamily (and Huntress) were hunted by the military.
That Batfam story actually sounds kinda cool, you wouldn’t happen to remember what that story’s called would you?
@@SpiralSine6 Just dug it up, it's called "Batman: Outlaws." Cover of one of the books is of Batman holding the corpse of Jim Gordon. Series was written by Doug Moench with art by Charles Yoakum.
My first Batman comic was Legend of Dark knight 195 with Clay Face origin where he crushed everyone's skull with his hands and wrecks Batman. Fell in love with Batman stories immediately. It was so gothic and scary. That was written by Alan Grant too!!
Loved this episode. It seems like a random story arc but you ended up teaching us the long and somehow complicated history of the clayface character and powers.
So this a story where we take a classic Batman villain, through their multiple iterations, and have them come together as a team to take him down? Geoff Johns you have some explaining to do.
After the epic first 17 minutes (and identifying so hard with the "people getting out of comics give you their random comics" bit) I'm watching the rest of the episode even if its an hour of fart noises.
Fun fact, Preston and Lady Clay go on to have a kid called Cascious Clay Payne who is another Clayface in his own right for a time before Karlo returns
15:40 well now I want a Biopic on Sal
There's a reason why we all consider BTAS one of the best iterations in history. That clayface IS THE clayface
I think I kind of prefer the Basil Karlo Rebirth version of him. Granted that one is heavily inspired by the Animated Series version of him but I think the Rebirth one is slightly more developed. I also have a soft spot for classic Basil Karlo because as much as I love the Animated Series Clayface one thing I didn't like was that he wanted to become human again.
I really felt connected to Sal with his rant about how to get into comic books (16:00). LOL!
Anarky would be AMAZING!!! I love that lil guy so much.
You can have a relationship as long as you keep the "glove on" nice one Tiffany lol
Sal is right. When I was about 10, a neighbor of mine gave me about 100 comics because he was older. I did the same for my buddies kid when I got older. Hopefully he does the same because theres a lot of trash out there, but at least 80s comics were funny. Love you guys.
Found all 4 issues in a dollar bin at a second hand store when I was looking for old cheap comics to wrap my Christmas presents in. I chose not to wrap my presents in this since it was a complete series but I very much debated it.
Tiffany at the end saying, “Don’t ever do this again” was great stuff.
I would say for modern audiences, the Harley Clayface is moving up in the world.
Alan Tudyk is a treasure
International Treasure
Clayface 3 could really become a great tragic villain if they gave him a chance
Sal’s way into comics is exactly how I got into comics. My first comics when I was 7 were Detective comics 588 (part 2/3) and a reprint of ASM 102 ( part 3 of the Six Arm Saga). Hooked me in and I’ve read ever since.
Every time Tiffany says "What?" I just immediately think of Norman Osborn
😂This story was ABSURD! I loved it so much.
Sal....i had issues 2-3 of 4 of the MudPack. Never knew what was happening and everything you said is so true! Except I don't have my own show to force my non-wife and best friend about them haha
What a delightfully absurd story. Also, my first comic was part 12 of Maximum Carnage, so I can confirm that is the best way to get into comics.
Sal talking about how you get into comic has to become a short
Well someone did it, DJ Spider cosplayed as Looker for DragonCon 2009, and its spot on!
Sal’s advice on how to get into comics is pretty good.
Sal: " ...and he falls.....he falls forever...."
*Affleck Batman bust-in* "And what falls....is fallen...."
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Couldn't agree more about getting into comics. My 1st 2 comics were Wolverine #38 & the issue of nightfall where Azrael beats up Bane with his new edgy Bat-suit with wrist-mounted Batarang guns. I had no idea what was going on but I had to find out how this dude become Batman.
“He gets a full mud bath but guess who’s givin him the bath” 😂😂😂
16:45 Well that shit just broke the fourth wall
I got all four issues of Mudpack a few years ago. It's not Shakespeare or anything, but I enjoyed it. Comics are supposed to be silly and weird; they don't have to be Watchmen all the time. Also, Sasha Wood has an entire playlist about all the Clayfaces on her Casually Comics TH-cam channel if anyone is interested.
Looker is dressed as every Eeveelution all at once, before they even existed.
"And you explain it to your wife and best friend and they have to listen to you because that's how they get paid."
This... is probably my favorite video from you guys now
That split screen reaction was perfect.
I think my favorite iteration of Clayface was the one from The Batman. Had a cool design, and he's easy to feel sorry for. Was a legitimately cool guy and Bruce's bestfriend till Joker kidnapped him, gave him one REAL bad day, and turned him into a mud monster
This whole episode was fucking hilarious lol.
When I saw the notification for this at work earlier, I told the nearest coworker how excited I was that someone remembered a silly Batman story from my childhood, and made a video about it. This is sure to be a fun one.
Sal is funny as shit, I can listen to him talk all day
10/10 I recommend to all my friends. My wife and I love to watch this every week
🥰
Grant/Breyfogle Batman >>> loved reading this story
first time I ever heard about Preston Payne ,such a weird character
I know I'm a year late, but Sal is 100% correct about how to get into comics, random issues creates comic fans
Me, listening to Sal's step-by-step getting into comics explanation: That doesn't seem typical.
Also me, looking at my copy of X-Force #33, part 3 of 4 of the "Child's Play" X-Force/New Warriors crossover event: Not typical at all...
Hell yeah the mud pack what an awesome story this episodes gonna be amazing!!
I think Rondo was also the inspiration for the title character in the old Dark Horse series the Creep by John Arcudi
DO ANARKY NEXT
or ratcatcher, scarface, tally man,
Hell yeah a Clayface story!
It's definitely summer!
15:40 best moment great mini rant and I love how it tied to ur current life lol
Man oh man i have just started the episode but gave it a like because of the title alone Mudpack that's the most hilarious and on the nose title for a clayface story 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Always excited for another back issues. Thanks for making my work infinitely more entertaining.
"Thats rogue..." "yea, but no its lady clayface" hahahahahhahahah
The Mudpack sounds like a 90s Horror movie
15:34
First issues i picked up were spiderman, part of the back in black storyline. Also the last issue of spiderman: reign.
Fun Fact- The Matt Hagen version of Clayface has a similar origin, except he is trapped in the Lazarus pit rather them a cave goo
Man i can't believe Geoff Johns ripped off The Mud Pack to make Three Jokers
I feel like Lady Clayface takes Batman's powers and defeats the Justice League is a story with potential.
RIP Alan Grant
18:25 ......what a wonderful sound.
My introduction to Clayface was the Ethan Bennet version from The Batman (2004) series. Loved that version.
At this point in time of the comic there was more clay faces than robins 😂
fun fact: Alan moore wrote a romeo and juliet style story about clayface 3 and a mannequin in a mall.
I boogie for back issues.
I remember this arc from when they came out, more than anything it was the creative team that kept me reading. RIP Alan and Norm.
