This is the most unhinged comic I've ever heard of, but why do I kind of love it?? The idea of the all powerful Beyonder bumbling through the world in the weirdest way ever is fascinating.
I find it really funny that with everyone the Beyonder is naive, but not actively horrible, but the second he sees the New mutants he's like "oh fuck these kids" and instantly murders them

The fact that one of the Incredible Hulk tie-ins was completely dedicated to the freaking ORIGIN OF BRUCE BANNER with only slight relevance to Secret Wars II kind of reveals a lot about what most of the writers at Marvel felt about this event.
The disbelief that Transformers was in continuity with 616 Marvel for a time was amazing. Also, this is sort of like a weird first draft to what would become Jim Shooter's run on Solar Man of the Atom at the start of Valiant.
Yes! Gerber also wrote for cartoon shows, including one called “Thundar the Barbarian”. Thundersword is a reference to that show, which aired, obviously, on NBC.
As a young teen, I read this as it came out. Although it was wildly strange, the scenes with Boom-Boom ("10 points, I win" for every bad thing that happens), Spider-Man teaching bodily functions, and the Beyonder going full Holy Trinity by making himself "his own son" stuck with me. Thanks for covering this madness!
Fun fact: the only reason why Circuit Breaker was apart of this event is actually because the writer of Transformers didn’t want Hasbro to have the license for Circuit Breaker, so had her appear here in Secret Wars II before she debuted in the Transformers comic. Most of us TF fans see this now as a bad idea as Marvel has never used her character since the Marvel TF run ended
This is the funniest episode in a while.💀 Now I wanna see a comedy movie with the Beyonder educating himself in the MCU. 🤣 31:10 It's funnier because the One Above All also did that
That machine that the New Mutants are coming out of when they're recreated by The Beyonder looks like the machine from Futurama that Professor Farnsworth uses to bring his crew back to life in their first episode after switching networks.
This is the most insane yet hilarious back issues so far. There's so many points where this book could've ended but it just kept going deeper into the madness. Gotta love how the freaking Pimp was the most morally right character while EVERY Marvel hero was okay with child murder by the end.
This was my first trade I've ever gotten. I got it at a small comic con for like 5 bucks like 6 ish years ago, I started to read it and said nope! I'm glad you can clear up the story for me!

Kurt said “How can the Lord permit this entity to threaten humanity? Perhaps all creation? Unless the Beyonder is GOD.”
I feel very lightheaded now. I cried, laughed, gasped in confusion, and shook my head in denial; there's NO way a book this insane could be published in the hopes of being commercially successful. Maybe, I should go lie down.
10 minutes in and this is one of the best episodes you've ever done. But that's basically every episode because you guys are the best comic show on TH-cam.
This was great. The single image that still sticks in my head to this day Is when the Beyonder picks up a bottle of soda ... he immediately bites the bottle as if it was food, and starts chewing the glass instead of drinking it lol Yes, Jim Shooter. You 'fancy yourself' a writer lol
I'm so excited for this episode, I read this a while back thinking "holy shit there's a secret wars 2? Why does nobody talk about this?" and quickly realized why and then forgot the entire plot like a week later
This video is great and hilarious. So many of my thoughts were the same while reading Secret Wars 2, which I read primarily as part of my Claremont run reading. I was so baffled by what I was reading and not a lot of people even talk about this event so this was so nice to hear. It was all so non-sensical, repetitive, and pointless and by the end I was just like “well that was a waste of time”
The amount of words per page in this is practically Bendis-esk. I don’t care what anyone says, yes a lot of what came out of the 80’s started as a toy commercial, but it doesn’t matter how creatively bankrupt the impetus behind an idea is, great, long lasting, highly creative things can (and do) come from that.
Ah, but therein lies the rub. The first secret wars was yes a toy commercial. As the hosts mention, the toyline was a failure. Contemporaneous from DC was the crisis on infinite earths. Itwas 12 issues with tie ins to the various comics. Both crisis and secret wars were big sellers book wise. Hence when secret wars 2 was moving ahead it was developed as a way to move comics and to get readers to sample books they may not ordinarily even consider. Marketing genius until it wore out its welcome with event after event.
