Honestly a Sainsbury’s cafe absolutely saved me when my partner was in hospital after major surgery. It felt like a safe and comfortable place to go. Not even sure it’s there any more as I moved away but thanks to the Sainsbury’s Cafe in Deepdale, Preston!

Ex-sainsburys cafe employee here, most of the cafes in south east got closed down after covid. It was very strange when it was announced. Their reasoning was that it was no longer profitable… this was a couple months after it re-opened from covid. Still unsure who’s idea it was as they gave it hardly any time to get back up and running again. They started closing cafes down whilst everyone was still wearing masks, a lot of people were still scared to go outside. My cafe is still open but i unfortunately had to leave as I wasn’t being appreciated there! It was kind of like the manager knew we would be closing down soon so they gave up with helping us etc. turns out my cafe has around 6 months left until it closes down. Feel for all those people who lost their jobs from someone making a very bad decision as the cafes that did shut and moved over to Starbucks and costa have not been going so well!

I have seen the same here in Glasgow. almost everywhere has closed their cafe, or shrunk it the seating down to a third or a quarter. All the Sainsbury's I've been in have expanded their Argo area, and the one nearest me seems to have given over some space to the regular and Chop-chop delivery service, to store their carts or something I suppose. Which makes me think they didn't give the customers time to get back to cafe habits, but that they don't expect people will because so many more people just order for delivery. From what I recall, the cafe was mostly filled with older folks, which I wonder how much of that customer base is no longer shopping for themselves, or at all.

It makes me so sad reading all of the comments about Sainsbury's cafes closing. I work at a Sainsbury's and I remember when they told us that they were closing ours. It was near the start of Covid so emotions were high. We all cried! Our cafe was a little hub for our elderly customers and was so much more than just a cafe. Terrible decision on Sainsbury's part I feel, only thinking about profits! Plus, I really miss the toasted fruit bread, it was so so delicious!

Im in west midlands and supermarket cafes have definitely had a resurgence.. I personally think its because of the offers for the kids. My asda cafe does £1 lunch box (drink, sandwich, snack and piece of fruit) every day not just school holidays and its incredibly popular!

Fully agree with the west midlands (and shropshire to my knowledge) having a strong supermarket café presence. I wondered whether it's partly down to the lesser competition from chains like Pret and Leon?

As far as I’m aware Sainsbury’s plan was essentially to close all their own cafes, or at least the majority, and eventually put third party cafes in instead. I used to work at my local Sainsbury’s cafe until they closed ours last year. Not just the south east either we’re losing supermarket cafes in general and I’m in the north.

Here in Northern Indiana (USA) Most supermarkets have something they call a Cafe but they don't compare to the ones in your video. Often the offerings are heated up from frozen, served on Styrofoam with plastic utensils and are literally a last resort before expiring from hunger. One partial exception is a regional chain, Martin's, which have "quick" food which they actually make, plus a Starbucks. I'm older than your generation and when I was a kid many stores, grocery and pharmacies in particular, had "lunch counters " with quick to make sandwiches, coffee, etc. I worked in a pharmacy with a lunch counter and that's where I tried, I honestly tried, to learn to like coffee. Nope. Never going to happen, and this from a fellow who grew up with parents who weren't even mobile until they had the second mug of coffee in their morning hands. 😢

Both of the Sainsburys in our area (midlands) have Starbucks now in place of a cafe so maybe that is the way they are going? Having to work in one of these types of cafes (department chain store, not supermarket) your description of them being stuck in time is soooooo real lmao 😭 also idk if it’s the same for supermarkets but there were loads of rumours that ours was gonna close bc of covid. The operational costs are too high, training is too much and the management rather would outsource to like Costa/Starbucks instead. Sadly ours stayed open lmao

Going to Market Basket is always an adventure, and one you can feel really good about (see the Wikipedia article Market Basket (New England) if you want to know why). As someone who works in a supermarket cafe, I think so many are shutting down because we have the lowest profit margins of all the departments in the whole store. Whereas clothing and home can take tens of thousands with only 4 staff to man the whole floor, and with electricity as the only outgoing, the cafe has to have lots of staff to cook, clean, serve, make coffee, do the till, etc. So already, for a department where the average customer spends less than in other departments, there’s more staff to pay. Add on to that the huge cost of the ovens, microwaves, coffee machines, industrial dishwashers, other water, and the fact that your stock can only last until the use by date and can’t be kept and just put on sale over and over, it means that even on a good week, your profit is normally way less than half of any of the other departments. It’s also the biggest hassle for management as there’s loads of hygiene and food safety requirements and assessments, and cafes tend to be open to worse reviews as customers go in expecting you to wait on them hand and foot, whereas just a smile can get a good review in other departments. My cafe is very busy all of the time and yet there’s often discussion about whether maintaining it is worth it.

I don't travel far from where I live, no car and set income at 66 years of age. Kind puts a cybash on fun things to do. My town thinks walking the two bridges is a tourist attraction and the little spring fed lake looks like pea soup because it's so polluted. And even wild life either dies or stays away. A dog swam there a few years back, and died shortly afterwards. It's run off from farms that make the water bad. And they try to fix it but it always fails. Sad to say .... life holds many disappointments.

I currently work in a Morrisons cafe! The cafes are all still open it’s the brew bars that have been closed down in a lot of stores! So you may have just gone to a store that doesn’t have a cafe but they are definitely still a thing!!

Maybe it's cost of living? I don't think alot of the cafés reopened post covid. I think supermarket food is so expensive now people just aren't staying for a coffee ( I very rarely did anyway) Sainsbury's has reduced their free parking to 2 hours so you wouldn't have enough time to shop and have lunch.

Grace you need to come back to the states and come to Texas! We have H‑E‑B and it’s one of the best grocery stores ever! They just opened a 4 story one in Austin that has a 2 story bbq restaurant.

In Scotland Sainsbury's cafe's are now Starbucks. Supermarkets were not making enough money in the cafe's so have outsourced them to other companies x

I`m in the South and alot has changed in the past year. Our Sainsburys first lost all their pharmacies ,then ,one by one ,the cafes. To be brutally honest i`m not surprised at the cafe closures ,as they were lacking badly in both what they had on offer ,and the quality of it. Tea and coffees just hot water and a spoonful of coffee or a tea bag shoved in a cup. Tea spoons for both shared and dirty. No sweetners for those who don`t like/can`t have ,sugar and generally pretty unhygenic too.Our nearest M&S has a small cafe ,offering very little in the way of food ,and is expensive also.Wouldn`t go out of my way tbh. I think i`d have to opt for Tesco ,who have a Costa and a decent variety of both food and drink.

Weirdly enough, supermarket cafes are still pretty popular in Buffalo, NY. Like if you go to a local supermarket cafe in the early morning or on the weekends, they're pretty busy.

My mum worked in a asda cafe for over 20 years! I use to love going in after school and having chips and gravy!
One of the m&s cafes near me, the staff always get the order wrong and I find them rather rude too. Which I find very disappointing for M&S.
A lot of the cafes are closing since Covid cos they aren’t making the money and now they are becoming more and more expensive. And most of them are not owned by the supermarket anymore!
