As a mum, I prefer to shop at Aldi or Lidl over any of the other supermarkets because there's usually only 1 or 2 options of things and in bigger supermarkets the vast choice can be quite overwhelming with a screaming toddler in the trolley. I like the fact that Aldi is smaller than the bigger supermarkets because I can nip round the whole shop in no time at all and I'm less likely to forget something because I'm visiting every aisle. 🥰

Grace, I worked at Booths during university. They pay their workers only minimum wage despite being the most expensive supermarket in the country. Bullying and 0 hour contracts were just the start. Just a simple Google search of employee feedback will show. My mental health suffered so badly because of Booths and I will never step foot in there again x

When I mention that I like to buy beer at Waitrose, someone always claims that shopping there is expensive but it isn't really. I can buy a 4-can pack of a good brand of beer for around £5 in Waitrose. In my local convenience store, a single bottle or can goes for around £2.50.

I love supermarkets ... whenever I visit another country I must go to supermarkets there. We were on a tour in China and stopped at a pearl "factory," but a huge supermarket was at the other end of the parking lot ... I went into the Pearl place for a little while then escaped to the supermarket. The guide was VERY worried I wasn't going to get back to the van in time (I would've) and came looking for me. I bought a variety of snacks not knowing what most of them were and shared them on the van ... we had a great time (there were only 9 people on the tour, it was great!).
In St. Petersburg, Russia we were on a grand tour of the city and one of the stops was a "gift shop" (which, of course gives a kickback to the cruise company we were on - what a lousy selection of cheap souvenirs) and as we loaded back into the bus I saw a supermarket at the corner!!! I was KICKING myself I didn't sneak away!!!!

I'd love to see a branded vs most expensive supermarket unbranded vs cheapest supermarket unbranded taste test. I think it would be more interesting than the usual branded vs unbranded videos since these are usually done using the cheapest supermarkets anyway, I'd like to see how a more expensive supermarket compares with them both.

As someone who worked for Waitrose for 2.5 years, but shops predominately in Aldi, I've never been so invested in a video. Fully agree that Aldi lacks variety but in my opinion the prices mean it undeniably wins. Quality is pretty on par as both have items that are fabulous and some that are pretty disappointing.

    • @BexREB
      @BexREB ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@MamaRebelle I shop with ocado for the same reason, I've found I very rarely ever have missing items either with them whereas i used to have a nightmare with other shops before I switched to ocado for most stuff.
They are surprisingly competitive on a lot of stuff and knowing it will actually all turn up is a godsend for me. I can't just pop to the shop if something doesn't turn up, I had an asda order where none of the chicken turned up and I've rarely had an order from the other supermarkets where at least something wasn't missing.
I do miss some of the quality but cheap waitrose fresh stuff. Since the switch to m&s the meat and veg that is branded m&s has been a bit touch and go for me so I've since just stuck to ocado branded stuff which is pretty great and competitive for most stuff.
Definitely have to keep an eye on the prices though as they have of course jumped around a lot for everyone recently.

Coming from Australia, I was blown away at the ready meals options and loved a meal deal from any supermarket but I do have to say the fresh produce was really lacking. Ocado has such a wide variety of products, whenever I venture to a real supermarket I’m shocked how little they offer.
Also they partnered with M&S which makes finding fresh organic produce easy.
I read recently that while fresh produce in supermarkets usually has plastic packaging, in the long run it actually causes less waste as more produce perishes when the plastic isn’t there.
You could always go to a local farm or just remove plastic packaging right away and wash produce to avoid any further contamination of the food.

I nearly fainted before Christmas, staff finished my shop and the manager gave me it for free. Another time I wanted marshmallows to make chocolate top hats, the staff member checked an order that had just come in to see for me, and offered to ring me when they did. They maybe more expensive than ALDI/LIDL, but I find staff super helpful, and somethings I get from them too.

One of the main reasons I shop at Waitrose is the quality of the fruit and veg. The two shops near me beside Aldi and Lidl are Asda and Co-op, I’ve constantly had issues with fruit going mouldy within a day of purchase from all of these, every time I get fruit or veg from Waitrose it seems to last at least 4-5 days to a week and the taste is where it should be usually. I feel like if you stick to Waitrose essential stuff where possible for most of the shop it doesn’t cost that much.

We've only got one Waitrose in Sheffield and it's at the other side of town for us (but not far from where my OH works), so we don't tend to use it, but maybe will more when he's back in the office full-time. For the supermarket-type shops I like Sainbury's and M&S, because they've both got good bakery sections.

Given your love of supermarkets, Grace, I’m surprised that you don’t have a trolley token on your car keys (so that you don’t need to struggle with a basket when you go to places like Lidl/Aldi)!!!
I’m not even sure where you would buy them anymore, but I can vouch for them being super duper useful if you’re going to be supermarket-hopping 😁

We have a Waitrose in a town across from us and if I'm ever feeling down at the weekend and I've been out all day I pop by late in the afternoon to see what awesome things I can get reduced 😁 totally get what you mean about supermarkets though, they've all got their own bonuses, I just fricken love going in supermarkets abroad 😍

Morrison's best for meat and fish (by some distance imo), Waitrose for fruit and specialty items, Lidl/Aldi for cheap stuff, Tesco/Asda for weekly supplies, Home Bargains/B&M for snacks. I feel like the days of doing a 'big shop' are dying out.

I grew up in the north west and we had a Booths in town... the town now has an Aldi, Waitrose and Sainsburys. I think the population is about 15k so people ought to hopefully be well fed! Booths is needlessly expensive however...

Aldi is really good. A lot of people say their fresh produce doesn’t last long but my salads have lasted 5 days and I think that’s a win! There shower gels are nice and the ice creams the ready made stuff like pizzas aren’t so good in my opinion. Lidls also good but it’s a different vibe.

Wow, I think our supermarkets in Oz stack up well. Even good old Woolies and Coles. I'm curious, does the UK have an equivalent if our IGA's?? They're by far our most expensive but you can go to a supermarket and have gin tastings, there will be fromageries, organic milk that you can fill in your own glass bottles all sourced from local farms?? I'm thinking Hill Street in Tassie and Foodland in SA (which has a weekend pianist playing tunes) 🤣.

For me, Waitrose does the best supermarket New York baked Cheesecake. We pop in there about once a month as a treat.
The only thing I buy from Aldi is breakfast cereals - most are under £2 a box which is really reasonable.

Ha brill you have to go to Booths. I travelled to London just to visit the posh supermarket Partridges because that’s my surname and I had a blast going round, spending a fortune on posh things that had Partridge written on it. Actually, think you would like Partridges if you haven’t been you should visit!

my local waitrose reduces their fresh baked goods late in the evening to like 5p a jam doughnut, 15p a flapjack or pain au chocolat, it is such a good time let me tell you. 5 salted caramel brownies for less than a pound!

People be hating on the north, but the Booth's supermarket Christmas book is a treat to behold (it's basically a hardback version of a supermarket magazine and it's always full of stuff that you would buy if money wasn't an issue and you had a house that could host 50 people)
