  • Dr. Lera talks about demodex (aka demodicosis, or demodectic mange) with Pepper, a six0month-old female intact bulldog.
    Demodex, also known as demodectic mange, in dogs is a mite infestation on your dog’s skin. The mites are tiny, eight legged, cigar shaped, and feed in the hair follicles and oil glands of the skin. Most cases of demodex are self-limiting, meaning your dog is able to stop the growth and reproduction of the demodex mites and will also repair the damage that was done by the mites. When Demodex first appears, it may just look like a small spot of hair loss, possibly from rubbing the area. However, if you notice any crusting on the skin or the hair loss spreads contact your veterinarian for an appointment. Symptoms of Demodex to look for include: hair loss in patches, rubbing their face or head, redness or inflammation of the skin, excessive oil on the skin, crusting on the skin and paws that are swelling. I used organic Neem oil 1 part and 10 parts Organic pure sweet almond oil. I rub into my dogs skin wherever needed. I did this every day for a week, gave her a good bath. It kills the mites 100%! always works, a no fail !
    It worked for my small dog, in the 1:10 but you can also use it Neem 1 part : Sweet Almond oil 4 parts.

    😁 My pup was diagnosed with this today. I had suspected it for a while. Finally did a skin scraping today. Mine is a 1 year old American Bully weighing in at 61 pounds. My vet prescribed ivermectin byt only at 0.6 cc by mouth daily for only 10 days. He combined this with 500mg of amoxicillin twice daily for the same 10 days and also the triz medicated shampoo baths. I hope this resolves it as I had heard that a longer course of ivermectin was normally required.

      @@theoneitgirl5699 Yeah. It definitely worked. The only thing is my vet kept adding another 10 days of treatment. In the end the treatment should go on for about 10 weeks (according to what I have read). My vet having me come back in every 10 days just added additional unecessarry exam fees. My pup seems to have one little bald patch still but I'll know for sure that it's all clear in the Spring when his new coat comes in all over again. He has improved a LOT. Ivermectin is a super interesting medication. It is antiviral, antibacterial, anti parasitic AND enhances the dog's microbiome. After about 3 follow-ups with my vet and seeing continued improvement each time, I chose to extend my pup's treatment on my own using the same dosing and ivermectin and ending the repeated "follow-up" check ups. As it turns out, I already had this drug in my home in decent quantities. I had purchased it either on line or at TSC. The amoxicillin was only prescribed and only administered for the first 10 days. If I had it to do over again, I would forego the amoxicillin all together. It's unnecessary AND it's harmful to the pup's natural gut microbiome. It causes stomach upset and diarrhea.

  • @isabellawewer

    We adopted a puppy about 7weeks old from the shelter and my vet said he has this. She told me to not get him close to my other dogs because it could be contagious and for me to use prescribed shampoo 2x a week. She also gave him one little tablet for fleas and ticks. I heard its not contagious, but worried because she said it was and for me to make sure I was my hands before I pet my other dogs. My other dogs are almost 2 years old is that why?

      No, demodectic mange is not contagious to other animals or humans. Demodex mites are transmitted to puppies from their mother during the first few days of life.

    My American bulldog has it bad, I’m pretty sure that’s what this is all over her. And now our Pyrenees has scratches and bumps on his perineal area. *sigh* ringworm has been a reoccurring issue but this doesn’t look like that. I dipped her in sulpher and lime and covering it in lotrimin ultra twice a day. I’ll also do some kind of bath. Theyre already taking bravecto. I’m just concerning my kid who has a very low immune system will be susceptible and end up with scabies 😖 .

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Demodex and scabies are two differe t organisms. If your dog has demodex you shouldn't be concerned at all about scabies

      Use happy jack mange. Cost $20 at tractor supply. In one week all the itch is gone and the skin begins to recover. Wash daily for three days then wash the kennel and bedding. After the second week the scratch and mites is gone hair regrow.

      stay away from nexguard. I was going to give my dog nexgaurd vet prescribed, but I read a lot of negative things about it. A friend of mine put her dog on it and she ended up having permanent siezures. Don't do it. Use neem oil and coconut oil. 1 part neem, 10 parts coconut. Use it every other day on dogs effected area and wash the dog with mild baby or dog shampoo- unscented. It should start working soon. I also have my dog on a multivitamin for immunity. I think it's called vet for bulldogs? I also have him on a fish supplement- to grow hair back, same brand and I'm starting to see the results. Hope this helps. Ivermectin works wonders too. Small doses dependant on weight.

    • @bghancock84
      @bghancock84 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All every kind of drugs are safe only if the doses are correct. Lots of people read in internet and start to treat their pets by themselves which is totally wrong. I have been tru demodic mange and Neem oil and coconut oil didn't work, and my dog was in early, early stage. Sense we start to use Nexgard spectra + advocate and skin shampoo things turn out great. At least for us it worked.
