- This video demonstrates the PRE-SAFE Brake with Pedestrian Recognition using DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist which all comes with the Driver Assistance Package of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

I had permission by my friend for this experiment, was driving on a closed road, and was ready to stop the vehicle in the case that it would not brake itself.

Volvo's system uses a monocular camera which cannot detect three-dimensional objects, so it may not be able to detect stationary pedestrians, and the same applies to VW and Ford. Mercedes-Benz and Subaru use stereo cameras and are superior.

Great information! 👍👍 Your friend has balls of steel. I realize he'd jump and or you'd avoid him. Makes me feel good to know, ours have the P3 and it's auto-stopped twice avoiding a rear-ended collision .. it braked before I got to the brake pedal.
Am I correct that the pre-collision system will also work automatically when you AREN'T using distronic? Such as regular driving not using cruise control?
@@Nightbird. .. Correct in both instances I didn't have the Distronics engaged, but I'm not certain it wasn't using the radar passively. Our 2020 car is even better so the system is getting better.

I'm a classic MB S Class owner having a gray market 1985 500SEL and 500SEC and a few other older examples..but I'm currently shopping for a 2015-17 S Class through the MB CPO program. The pre-collision system is the #1 reason I want the car because drivers today are so distracted and I have been close to crashing a few times because of this..so I'm trying to protect my family as best as possible. Since you sound like a previous S Class owner..can you tell me if your older S Classes from 2014 redesign to now have been reliable? Or did they still require frequent repairs like this vehicle is known for? Thanks for any feedback and cheers.
@@Nightbird. .. My experience with A Classes are to either lease them or purchase an extended warranty. I wish I could say they're reliable as they should be but I'd be lying. It's not that they're badly unreliable, instead it's that the higher number of moving parts and in particular the less proven i.e. less used because it's expensive .. parts are the things that fail.
In our experience the E Class / GLE mid Tier and below are "generally" the most reliable Mercedes. But that's no guarantee either. Example my wife's ML 350 was overall reliable, but after she got around 90K miles we noticed some different oil drips on the garage floor. The estimate for repairs was around $7K to $8K .. the ML was worth about $8K. Obviously, we simply traded it for a new E350 and prepaid a 3 year lease and my wife got her GLE. Now we're looking at a 2021 GLE53 and for $4K getting a 7YR/100K Mercedes warranty and giving it to our daughter. Otherwise I she couldn't afford any moderate or worse repairs.
@@DJaquithFL Thanks for the reply. Since I'm wanting the best vehicle in terms of safety features..I guess I will have to roll the dice and purchase an S Class and hope for the best. Many other cars have safety features..but they don't all work to the same high standards as MB..so I really don't think I have a choice here in that regard. I don’t understand the mentality of people today. For me, a luxury car is a big spacious car that is extremely quiet in the cabin with a very good sound system.
I like the C Klasse, but it has nothing on the S when it comes to luxury and comfort. No matter how much tech the C has.

What if someone is trying to car jack you and they jump in front of you and your Mercedes stops? What if they pull a gun out and you're trying to get away but it stops? That's an easy car jacking right there.

It really does work. Once i accidently missed the signs At nighttime on the Autobahn, that the road goes from 3 lanes to 2. I almost crashed into the barrier, because there Was a car right next to me, so i couldnt pull over, so i had to come to a full stop. Another time i Was in a traffic jam and didnt pay enough attention because i was on my Phone, so i almost ran in the car in Front of me. The System breaked for me. So basically this System is a great Thing. The only disadvantage is, that it also detects cars that you pass by in a very sharp curve or when you are in a residential one-lane area where the cars are parked really close to each other, the System sonetimes beeps. All in all, great Feature.
I can't try this at home. So I'll try it outside.
I was spared a potentially bizarre accident where I was backing a little too fast to get out of the way of traffic and was stopped right as I thought I was about to hit them.
A couple of colleagues were looking for a new family car. The dealer was explaining to them that the car is super safe - it automatically slows down if the car in front slows down etc. They went for a test drive which ended quite quickly when the dealer started yelling "STOP! STOP! STOP!"... no need to mention they went for another brand... That's why I distrust such features. I wish your life never depends on such feature...

Is there any speed limit? I mean does it work perfectly if car was at 40 or 50kmph speed? What if person not in the center of car.? What if person jump in front of car?

These systems basically rely on optical pattern recognition, therefore a person standing on the road is harder to detect than somebody jumping in front of the car. The response time for the system is way less than one second if somebody jumps, so if braking capability, the only limiting factor, is suficcient the car will stop in time.
This is the reason the car manufacturers only approve their systems for a certain speed, above that you need to be lucky. But still speed is reduced. Speeds at arround 10 mph usually do not cause very much harm and most people will survive at 20 mph, if they do not get trapped under the car.

@@4rzaluz Thanks! Am currently shopping for one of these vehicles and it's a pain making sure it has all the safety features since MB puts them in packages. But I believe this particular safety feature is standard on all S Classes since it's inception.
I got an S 450 2019, I think this feature is disabled in mine or I’m a really great driver. Never required this feature but have to say Mercedes is the best luxuries yet fast sport car available. I owned a Mercedes e 2012, and Mercedes A 2018, Mercedes GT 4 door. Till now , S is the best..

i was planning to buy a Mercedes 2019 GLA - and the dealer told me that Distronic feature wont kick in if you are driving below 30 mph speed. I told him i will be driving intown where speed limit is max 25 mph and some place less than 15 mph with many pedestrians. He told this feature wont help. Any suggestion? on Contrary Toyota's TSS feature gets activiated even at 7 mph speed.

Very easy. Buy 3 good quality proximity sensors, one Arduino Uno board, small stepper motor, switches and wires. Attach proximity sensors to front of car. Learn basic programming. Attach motor above brake pedal with a lever which can press the pedal when the motor runs. Program the proximity sensors to activate the motor when an object is detected at 0.1 x (speed of car in kmph) meters (eg. At 50kmph the car would brake when object detected at 5 meters) by ANY of the sensors. The kmph data can be taken from the OBD port in the car. Also position proximity sensors so they are pointed upwards and would only detect an object over the ground clearance of the car. The program should be made so that the sensors activate the motor and turn it 90 degrees to press brake pedal when the distance/speed conditions are met from any of the sensors and should turn back 90 degrees to normal position when velocity of car becomes 0 kmph. The motor must be powered from car battery. Also keep condition in program to not run code when speed of car below 10 kmph so you can park car close to other objects. The switch is what is activated by the Arduino uno(program) which completes the circuit of motor and battery. Thank you.
