  • This is exactly how my channel started. Someone asked me to help them with a problem they got themselves into with a trailer and the easiest way to explain it was on video. One of my viewers now has a problem and I decided that a video was the only way to show her how to fix it. This is part one of that explanation.

      Oh I can't wait to do that one. Been wanting to do it for some time now. I see SOOOOO many people getting off on the wrong foot and gutting their trailers. That ruins them and these old gems are getting too hard to find to see them end up in a dump somewhere. And many of them go back up on Craig's List for sale as a project trailer but they are already ruined because of the gutting.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a background in construction and wanted to renovate a trailer myself. I just gutted my 1972 Skylar to ensure the rotted wood, flooring and insulation was replaced before just covering it up as I bought it. (Note: I did unscrew and disassemble most of the cabinets, walls, etc.) This video is definitely going to help when I redesign the inside and ensure it is structurally sound. Glad I ran into this before I started that process. Can't wait to watch your "Anatomy of a Trailer."

I have a 1973 Starcraft 180 camper that needs a walls off and roof up resto, doing the work is not the problem I have the shop and tools and knowledge for the woodwork and stuff, but what I dont have is the knowledge for where to get the sealant, window/door seals, hot water heater, keep and use the original AC unit or plug the hole and go with a wall unit somewhere, and I have ? about switching to a rubber roof or where to get an new roof skin from. Huah, Larry! Too many of these “derelicts” are wrecks waiting to happen. Cedar siding; opening up to make them feel large inside; covering bad wood with paint. I go into many campers at vintage rallies....owners are so proud of how cute and “glamperlicious”. Too often, the camper stinks of rotty wood. I bought one of those derelicts that looked great on the ebay page from a self-proclaimed professional supposedly ready to go camping. Yep. Four-plus years later, hundreds of hours of labor, and thousands of dollars we now have an over-priced canned ham camper. Rather than taking pride in overcoming disasters, we should band together to force improvements in the cottage industry of canned hams.

  • @samuelsmith5773
    @samuelsmith5773 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can set the router on top 0f the wall and run the bit, lower it, then run it again. You would clamp a piece of wood even with the top of the wall in order to balance the router. A router bit that large would hog out a lot of wood and be difficult to hold if working on vertical walls. If the walls were laid on a work table, you could do this. The router weight would press the router down, onto the work surface. A bit that big around is a lot of mass and torque making for a dangerous job.

This the same company who built Pioneer trailers in S calif. I purchased the trailer new so I know the complete history. That's where I learned to be so anal about the little details also (retired EMC). Since all of my cabinets were missing can you give me an idea of where they should have been? My thought is above the "kitchen area", across the upper front and possibly upper back. I don't like the dinette look so I plan on putting a bench on either side and across the front with a foldout bed. Potable water was under a side bench and I am putting full-sized bed crossways in the back. I have seen the pink camper explosion and I don't want that to be me.

      Exactly my friend. And at the same time they had to be able to produce mass quantities in short time and make a profit. Shasta was the best at all these things and the company is still in existence today. Coachmen bought out Shasta a few years back but Coachmen builds great trailers! They screwed up big time with the limited retro model they came out with a couple years ago. But they just didn't study up on how the old ones were built. If they had watched my videos first, they would have come out fine.

    That rabbet along the edge of the roof is quite large needing a powerful router with a 1/2 inch collet to hold a large router bit. This can be daunting for a person with no or little router experience. Make this cut in multiple passes with the first pass set very shallow. And work your way a little deeper with each pass. Wear safety glasses and hearing protection as well.

    I just got a 1983 coachmen 21 and a half camper for free. It's got rot in several places and may need a few floor patches. Where should I start? The roof, walls or floor? I want to gut all the bad and save anything good and make it all orginal with a few upgrades to make the interior nice looking but soundboard safe.
    I planned on making structure stands and supports for when I have to remove sections that need some aid to keep their shape until it's been repaired.
    I want to so this right and I'm the end have a trailer better built then it was before I got it. Me and my gf want something to travel in and possible use as a home . I want to give this a shot and having something nice that we built together.
    Any info is great, I don't want to junk it. I have yet to remove the panels on the walls or ceiling to assess the damage yet. I've got to title it and put new tires on....if it's a flop I'll just turn it into a flatbed like to avoid that...

    This is where I'm at. The ideas I have are not necessarily in line with the structural design so I'm trying to work my wants into the parameters of the trailers needs.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just make sure that you don't eliminate the most important cabinets which are the ones that go floor to ceiling and the kitchen cabinets. The bed and seat boxes don't have as much to do with structural integrity but something needs to be in the corners and attached at the walls and floor. Same with the bed. Overhead cabinets are VERY important. All of these items play an itregal part in the structural integrity of the trailer.

      Yea, I want the floor to ceiling wardrobe gone but can't do I so I am looking at options. It sits across from the dinette and I want more walking room. I think I will eliminate the dinette and go with a small table and 2 chairs but then I worried about the boxes that make up the seats that connect the floor to the wall. Glad to know I can remove them.

      Many of these trailer have one shock on one side of the axle. I'm not sure as to why only one though.

      Oh you think I'm kidding? Check out my interview with a lady who that happened to. And I have photos of others. Not a pretty site. What happens is the entire box drops to the asphalt while you are traveling down the highway at 60mph +.... That's because the fasteners which hold the box up rust away. Then if the cabinets have been removed the entire trailer falls to the ground because in most trailers the walls are attached to the sides of the chassis. You just don't know how these things are built. Most people don't. Check this video interview out. th-cam.com/video/ONPym2s2dj4/w-d-xo.html

    Seems like throwing the wood in the trash and starting over with welded aluminum would be better.

      Why? And how would you attach all the paneling inside. How would you attach all the metal skin outside. What would it cost? How could most people affod a trailer built like that? Think about it. How many people know how to weld? How many of those can weld aluminum? How many can afford that? You obviously did not think this out before you posted your question.

      I think many of the commercial RV manufactures today use aluminum instead of steel tube. This guys used a kind of glue based tape to attach the skin to the metal frame. Or you might just use screws.

      Yap to you. Important information to others. And I didn't do this video for you. I did it for another person but it helps thousands of others. You're just some zit faced little kid who sits in his mothers basement all day looking at porn and smoking pot. Go bother someone else kid. You bother me.
