    If Red Green were to make a trailer rebuild video that was a serious building project, it would probably look a lot like these! Lol!

    LOL! So you've got Bill standing on his tiptoes on a stack of beer cans, trying to hold the ceiling in place, and suddenly you have to go around outside and put up a ladder. Instead of "Hang onto it now," It would've been the perfect time for, "Just stand there and look stupid." LOL
    The dual camera angles add a nice perspective. As you work on these things, I'm reminded of just how little there is actually holding them together!

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I keep trying to tell people who think they can just GUT the trailer. You have to put it back together the way it was built or it will fall apart. Yes that would have been the perfect time to tell Bill to just stand there and look stupid which is where that came from in the first place. But people get all butt hurt when I do so I don't do it anymore.

    There's nothing like that feeling you get when you've finished all the demolition and destruction and finally get to install the first pieces of new. The job stops being "work" and starts being "fun" again.
    To answer the question about why Shasta didn't put the radiused crown pieces across all the roof supports, any Shasta rebuilder will tell you that it was done that way to increase the profit margin. Shasta never used a toothpick's more wood than was absolutely necessary to keep the trailer from falling apart while it was going down the road. I must have added 100 ft of 1x2 to the framing of my '59 Airflyte just to make it solid again. Thank goodness for Harbor Freight and the portable pocket hole jig!

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That thought did cross my mind Bob. There was no one better at being cheap than Shasta. And yet a lot of those trailers made it all the way to 2016! Amazing when you think about it. But yes. The project has become fun once again.

    • @sagebrushbob2321
      @sagebrushbob2321 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much as we all like to complain about the Shasta build quality, there was some pretty amazing practical engineering under the skin of all the old canned hams. They were light, flexible, and tough enough to survive what amounts to about a 4.0 earthquake as they were being pulled down the roads of the day. And, like the old air-cooled volkswagens, they were/are so simple to fix that even a caveman like us can do it. Ha!
      I'm going to have fun watching you have fun. Does that make me some kind of voyeur???

    Is there is reason why wood preservative isn't used during the framing process to keep the wood from rotting in the future? Seems legit idea to me.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Because the wood preservatives erode aluminum. Besides, when you have all those holes in the wood due to fasteners, water is going to get ins somewhere anyway and you want it to be able to drain/leach out the bottom or that's where the rot will happen. These trailers were not built to last more than about 10 years. Today's trailers are only built to last 7 before they begin to leak.

    Larry, did you install curbing over the roof panels? Were they attached to the walls?
    Trying to picture how they added to structural integrity.
    A.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes... The roof panels set in the L shaped channels in the top of the walls. Then curbing goes on top. You should see that in later videos. Also if you want to email me I can send photos. mobiltec@gmail.com

  • @justjeff2849
    @justjeff2849 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That ceiling came out sharp. The crown rafters that you installed only looked like they were on the back 2 and a couple on the front flat rafters? Are the crown rafters all along the roof or just front and back radius?
    Tell Bill no one needs to make fun of the back of his head...no need to...too much to make fun of on the front of his head...lol...just kiddin. He's a champ for giving you a hand.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. Only two crown rafters in the rear and one in the front. There are also crowns around both vents that are the same height but not on the rafters themselves. Bills a card. He's a lot of fun to work with. Never a dull moment when he's around.

    • @justjeff2849
      @justjeff2849 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mobiltec that makes sense...I was pretty sure there wasn't a valley in the middle since the crown rafters were there to shed water and not create a pond in the middle of the roof

  • @daultonruff2281
    @daultonruff2281 ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't see those curved rafters on my trailer. I just have the flat slats you are using nails to install. Would it be better to use screws? I'm soaking up comments about the integratory of the trailer and need for allowance for movement (?). Too rigid not good? I would use glue on everything.. but I donno.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glue does nothing in the framework really. It will all just crack. You need some flex in the trailer. Screws are good in some places and not in others. In this case it's nails. But going through to the cabinets it's screws.

    • @daultonruff2281

      @@mobiltec I'm kind of known as a "glue freak" Larry. I glue everything! How about a flexible glue, along with brads or nails on the other side? That is what I saw on the video of the kid rebuilding his trailer wall. I looked for the staple gun with a 2" crown but couldn't find one, (but saw some really expensive ones), so I wondered if this method of fastening sticks together is not used anymore. I thought of just using small strips of metal and screws. I'm going to be looking back at your videos for how you do the can ham front and also how your make that channel in the top. I took off the driver side and saving to use as a pattern and it's sitting there falling apart. Too many topics in my head. I'm getting excited seeing your video selection in the column to choose from. Shasta used a 1" strip of plywood for the front edge and I don't like that. The more of your videos I watch the more I realize how complex this project is.

      @@daultonruff2281 Glue is not needed anywhere in a trailer really.

      @@daultonruff2281 Then glue like the wind. Some of it will hold. Some won't but at least you'll be having fun. There are things I glue, mostly in cabinets. I also glue all the laminated curbing. It doesn't flex.

    Why not use screws instead of nails and do you use liquid nails before putting most of your stuff together? We are starting on an 82 Shasta. I know, not that old but we like how it looks.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of two reasons. One, Twisty nails is what was used when this camper was first built and we are keeping this camper as original as we can in design. Two. These trailers need to flex so all of the fasteners come into play on how much flex there is in the trailer. Screws are used in much of the framing but the paneling is held up with twisty nails. Some companies glued the paneling to the framing as did this one. They used other types of glue back then but Liquid Nails works great too....

    Larry, where can I buy the diamond metal you talked about in this video? I've searched and can't find it.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want it in Stainless Steel you can buy it at places like Interstate Metal for $125 for a 4x4ft sheet. Then you have to cut it. BUT... If you want it in aluminum like the back splash in this Shasta you can make it yourself. All you need is a sheet of aluminum, a screen roller tool and a straight edge. Go to this link and this guy will show you how. I'm making new backsplash for this Shasta using his method... th-cam.com/video/TSx6hdyZC18/w-d-xo.html

    Hi, love watching your videos just wondering what kind of heater is in that trailer. Is it the one that came with the trailer or aftermarket? The trailer is looking great. With not all the paneling having the upward pieces on them wont the roof be unlevel ? I thought that Calif. had good weather,lol. Keep up the great videos. Joe

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure what you are talking about with the paneling having upward pieces on them... The heater is a brand new Atwood which is thermostatically controlled and has auto-ignition. Much safer and much more efficient than the old one. People get the idea that California has good weather all the time. Well right now we are in a huge drought and have had no rain at all this summer. That is killing the trees in the mountains because water tables are lower up there. We have bad weather here too but it just never freezes much in the winters unless you are at a higher elevation. But it is supposed to rain here on occasion.

      The paneling supports that you nailed on the flat pieces on the paneling. Just wondered why all the supports were the same. Just kidding about the weather I grew up in Salinas Calif. Loved the weather, Tee shirt weather all the time. Thanks

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      joeshaver100 Oh I see. This is the way Shasta designed the roof. There will also be curbing (crown pieces) on the two top vents that will also support the metal roof. I don't know why they didn't put these crown supports the full length of the trailer. Your guess is as good as mine.
