  • Long boring video which started out as my first V-Log. Well it turned out to be an hour long. So I edited the thing and got it down to what you see now. Still way too long for a V-Log. So I gave up and called it what it is. Just a long boring video of a typical day working on a vintage trailer.

    Every time I watch Larry, I’m learning something. Thankfully building and remodeling most of my life, I have more tools than a Home Depot tool rental. Waiting for tonight’s live class, especially Q&A
    All I have to remember is “they were built from the inside out, so to fix them, you have to go from the outside in”, lol but true, thanks Larry

    It's interesting to see how materials and construction changed between the "canned ham" style and "toaster" style trailers. Somebody realized that it was a lot easier (cheaper) to build trailers that only need materials and framing cut in straight lines instead of curves. That, along with the invention of "fakewood" gave us what you are dealing with here. Another shining example that newer is not always better. It looks like this restore will take awhile. I'm off to the store to buy extra popcorn. 73 Larry!

      LOL well that's progress for ya. Newer is not necessarily better. Just quicker and more profitable for the big boys. On that note, I would NEVER EVER buy a new home. I was in the construction trades most of my adult life and I see how building methods have changed. New homes cost about half to build now than they did 40 years ago and yet they are selling for 10 times the price of yesteryear. Ya that's progress for ya.

    Larry, don't worry bout the time, I find that if I'm engrossed in what I'm watching, then time flies and I mean fast!!! This felt about 10 min. long(with the interest level factored in) Don't stop now, you're on a roll!! :--) Dave

    Where I have to copy parts I tend to use a couple or so wood screws instead of struggling with clamps. This greatly helps if I need to edge belt sand or use a drum sander in my drill press.

    Hi, Have You ever considered using a sawz-all for dis- assembly? I have pretty good results with mine. I use the Milwaukee torch blades. If you need to remove brads nails, screws it obviously won't work.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a Sawzall when nothing else works. Sometimes you just can't get the fasteners out. Screws especially.

  • @chwk2003

    Serious question: I'm replacing some framing boards on a 1978 travel trailer.
    Originally the trailer was put together using 1" crown staples. I noticed that you are screwing your but jointed boards together using pocket screws and a pocket screw jig. Is there a reason why you are doing it that way? Why not using a pneumatic nailer with large crown staples (it would be much faster)?

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When your trailer was built the wall pieces were placed in a jig on the floor. The pieces were then stapled together to keep them in place until the paneling could be placed over them and then nailed or glued to the framing pieces. The staple was only there to keep the pieces in place until then. once the walls are built then they are raised and mounted on the sides of the trailer. Framing in these trailers plays very little roll in structural integrity. They are there merely to add an air space between the paneling and the metal skin.
      When working on a trailer that is already built and the walls are standing, I find that screwing the framing together gives the walls more strength and makes them more solid which is better for working on them. Nothing worse than beating on flimsy walls. Yes the other way is faster but again it's harder to work on them in that condition.

    Do you know the thickness of the bunk material? Looks like 1.5"? I'm wondering if 1" plywood would work.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3/4 inch thick plus paneling.

  • @thunderbird97
    @thunderbird97 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    do you have a problem with size of wood you use matching what was in it, like old houses when you remodel

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Plywood does not match up and I have to work around that little problem. The floor has the biggest problem with that.

      It's very hard to make an instructional video fun. Maybe I need to learn some jokes. The people who tell my my trailer videos are long and boring are usually people who are not working on trailers themselves. I have to remind them that these are instructional videos and not meant for entertainment LOL... Thanks for watching and for the support.

    How long does it take you to disassemble one that is approximately 20'-24'?

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again, that depends on skill level, tools and working environment. I can have a trailer disassembled in a week if I work long hours at it.

  • @michellestaley5161
    @michellestaley5161 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you put wood sheets up behind the paneling?

  • @TexasBKVideo
    @TexasBKVideo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    If a man started from scratch, taking apart a 1985, 24ft Aljo Skyline, ... "How far could he get in 3 weeks, if he worked 40 hours a week?" Doing it the right way as you show here.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL that's another loaded question. Depends on the man, his skills, his tools and his environment.

    What happened to "screw & glue"?

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Further research shows that gluing the framing really serves no purpose. I do glue some joints but mostly that is on the interior now. So for the most part, now we just screw.

    Is asbestos an issue with older trailers?

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are worried about it just wear a good mask. One with removable filters like the painters use. They are only about $30. The flooring is about the only thing that was made with asbestos and if you aren't grinding it up I wouldn't worry about it.
