Decision fatigue is a huge factor. Rare to see a trading educator call this one out. I have quit trading for long periods of time over the 20 years of market experience for exactly this reason - personal life was too complicated and it ALWAYS shows up in my trading account as losses or mistakes in execution of my trading plan. Props to Anton for being brutal but accurate, and not trying to advertise trading for a living as something anyone can do in 10 minutes a day.

The market will humble you often enough for you to understand ego doesn’t add to your life. Funny that… people have the stereotype view of traders, which is Ferraris, loads of women, drugs, parties… fact is if you’re actually like this on a trading floor you probably wouldn’t last a week. Of course, some traders are like this… but so are some plumbers. Some people like this exist and they generally don’t make it.

I agree there is a need to limit stress and chaos in professional and private life. An "empty life", as Anton says, however, totally unroots you.
Early in my career I had a job that was demanding to the point of slavery and I dated a girl who was smart and pretty but extremely impulsive and ... well, loud.
I stopped seeing her which really took one problem off me.
Now, I am married (to a very different woman) - so though it's important to get rid of people who just drain you emotionally, emptiness doesn't really help, either...

we are talking about trading .. thats the place in the world where you take money from other people directly. the whole process is selfish. they lose you win in the best case. and its by far not selfish to get your priorities straight. if you really walk around the world and try to add value to everyones live that you meet .. goodluck with that. nobody said that you should only take but choose the right ones to add value too. and sort the rest out!

Simple but Gold. Thank you Anton :)
(Edit April 2019): I don't think he is criticising relationships, especially as he is in one, he is just saying avoid toxic things that drag you down. This is a very old truth/mantra relating to focus, zen, clarity, decision making. I don't believe the consensus that all people in finance are awful and/or self-absorbed. I know plenty of people in the finance industry who live very good lives and are decent people, and funnily enough are not flashy at all with their money and success.
As I said before, he speak gold about keeping things simple. This can be applicable to anything in life.

Trading is really simple. If it is not simple, then there is something wrong with your method or approach. If it screws up your personal life, then definitely your trading approach is wrong.

I dont understand the point of going through the stress of getting hired by a big bank when you can trade for yourself and if you have enough capital make a living for yourself....all of this confuses me and I’m a finance major in college who just stated getting into the market myself. Can someone clear this up for me?

I just came from a second date with a girl and this video of Anton immediately popped into my head. If you go on a date with a girl, twice, is she adding any value to your life? Well given that I payed for the drinks on both occasions I am now down 80 quid, I would say is taking value from my life.

Any profession; where you want to achieve excellence; requires this mindset. Lawyer, surgeon, or even any type of salesman needs to be dedicated to their profession. There are thousands of hacks in any sphere of endeavour and only a few that generate wealth. You have a discipline to keep to your schedule, and you actually work it, not talk about it.
As for the girlfriend, is she a long term investment, or a short term scalp. Sometimes a bit no strings fun for a Saturday evening can be as nice as a quick pop on Brent crude.

don't twist his message to your wicked standards. These people are living dignified lives for the most part. That is why they have consistent prosperity. Ever hear about karma? Your 'no strings' or whatever type of fun shall strip away your chances of having anything fulfilling in your life later. And you'll know this later, in 2 scenarios: When you understand life on a higher level, and/or you get to experience it yourself. Which I hope not.

the speech focus a lot on maximizing returns and values in both trading and living, and that is a good point. however.
without experience you cannot even know what a value is. just like trading, life needs to be experienced for you to appreciate what you value. and it is a continuous learning process as you live and become wiser. is it valuable for a partner to be living with you? is it valuable for your partner to be available to your emotional needs? is it valuable that you would raise a child soon? these are difficult questions you need to answer, and only by attempting to answer them you can accurately prescribe a value on these things
I get a feeling most people would get the "take-away" of keeping life minimal and focus professionally, but this is a mistake. If you do not experience life fully, you will make mistakes in evaluating what is "valuable" in life, and this misjudgement will cost you fortunes in personal life and bleed into your professional life if you can't get your shit together.
live balanced or pay the price, do not throw personal life under the rug, it will eat you up
