I ditched my smartphone apps in lockdown , no movies no WhatsApp no music no social media . I studied how to trade those 2 years for 15 hours straight like a mad scientist in a lab working . Zero distractions if I was on TH-cam it’ll be trading podcast etc
When you have zero distractions that time when you sitting alone your constantly thinking and planning ahead that’s when creative ideas 💡 start to pop in your head . Whereas if u was listening to music or whatever during that downtime zero ideas 💡 will pop in your head ..
I’m not saying that’s how life should be forever but when your going through a transition and a learning / levelling up phase these sacrifices have to be made

    • @SunnyWinterz

Completely agree. Eliminate the possibility for any distractions or temptations and focus. Have been doing the same recently, though I have a playlist with piano music constantly on shuffle too. Perfect for getting in the zone and pushing your life forward. Just bought a dumb phone too as smartphone was still messing up my routine. All the best.

I think ditching the smartphone all together is a bit extreme. I went from a 6GB/mo data plan down to 200MB (for emergencies) and uninstalled all social apps and games. the phone is low end, too. The best advice I can give is something I learned from Tim Ferriss: turn off the phone and leave it in the car unless you absolutely need to use it. Turn it on, maybe once a day for 5-15 minutes, to check for messages and to stay informed. That said, I wouldn't completely ditch it, as they are invaluable to have nowadays, especially if you travel a lot or work in industries in which it's essential to have (like outside sales), just don't keep it on you 24/7. It's a huge time waster and productivity killer.

  • @ferdinandwilhelm8749

I believe it boils down to discipline. My smartphone adds a lot of value to my life (note taking, taking photos of receipts and important stuff, talking to my family over the internet who live abroad, ...). It’s true that you’ll waste a lot of time on things that don’t bring you joy or don’t get you anywhere if you’re only reactive and not disciplined.
It’s important to keep in mind that not everything in life is a means to an end. It’s perfectly fine to indulge in things that bring you joy, even if they don’t improve a skill or make you more money. The key is to be aware of that and to be present.

I agree in essence - but you can make use of a smartphone to check your broker, set up alerts at various price levels you want to watch, etc. What you should not do is install all kinds of crappy messaging apps (fb messenger, gmail with your heavily used email address, etc) as their constant notifications will drive you mad. There's also a way on ios / android to shut up all kinds of notifications from every app. So in essence you can use a smartphone but you need to tone it down use it almost like a regular phone, and use its smarty features only when you're on the go and want to check your positions.

Phenomenal point there that noise from the mainstream media will never make you money in the financial markets -- because it's **responsive**...of course, as with anything, this is not true 100% of the time (mainstream news can make you money on a rare occasion)...nevertheless, these are truly wise words, Anton!
My question is: what about the ability to use trading apps on your smart phone? Wouldn't this be important for when you can't get to a computer?

Ditch the social network on your phone.. that's 80% of ditching the smartphone as a whole. I personally see Google and maps as important friends when being on the go.. otherwise you may lose time asking around for a street or a location and eventually get lost before reaching your destination.

Yeah, social media apps are by far the worst, news apps come close second. I don't play games. TH-cam WhatsApp and Google . Its a start anyway

he is absolutely right. Don't create the chance for people to have expectation that they can get instant responses from you ever, unless they are very close to you like close family. I have a smartphone, but if I receive messages from friends that are not important, I just don't respond. It's such a waste of time. I hate it when people have dinner at the table and look at their phone or play video games.

Too funny, at the end the guy recording sounds like he's in total shock at the realisation of actually doing it, as though he's just been given a terminal diagnosis! 😂
I can so relate to this, I can remember even going back 20+ years when smartphones first came out and I wasn't interested at all, but going to the pub with mates playing pool and I'd finish a shot to then see them all on their phones and I was thinking wtf is going on, nobody is talking to one another. It was like some distopian mindwashing had been done to them...

This is a really interesting idea. Unsure how I feel about it though as most people also use their phone as a camera these days. I've taken a half-house approach whereby I removed social media from my phone (bar WhatsApp as my friends use this to organise social gatherings etc) and have made it so I hardly receive any notifications at all and have deleted most apps on my phone. I'm tempted to experiment and go cold turkey like Anton but I don't think it would suit me. I think I'll end up keeping a smart phone but just severely limiting my usage

Since i ditched my BBQ10 i have less efficiency and productivity in a streamlined OS that multitasking is a sinch on and typing (particularly one-handed) is tactile and responsive, far more concise and direct with inherently less typo mistakes. My software security is also less effective and complex as well.. i still have it though, just haven't put the battery back in it in a few months now. I feel more frustrated now using an inferior device with less ergonomic efficiency. Also i now have fewer hardware options for direct connectivity to devices, particularly older video monitors/projectors with no wifi or bluetooth connectivity. Last time i looked into it, BlackBerry (formerly RIM) was still licensing and developing self driving automobile software and "multilayered" proprietary security suites.
