      It's GSM, which stands for grams per square meter.
      I make stencils from 300 GSM cardboard, which is like 15 cents per sheet in A3 format, using a CO2 laser cutter. The laser cutter will give you details that are simply not achievable with a knife.

    Hey, my friend, your video is very good. I'm from Brazil, I'm starting to paint stecils and you've helped me a lot with your videos. Continue, please. The world needs more art.

    Your skill is incredible, and the sincere honesty is a huge help.
    Always enjoy your videos.
    I love using cereal boxes for my stencils...I also have an excuse to buy more cereal :)
    They line up cool with the folds, and you can create a few layers, the folds act as registration marks.
    (if its same sizes of cereal boxes)

    Thx for the comparison I had not even considered stencil to be made from cardboard or card stock...
    And your tip about the acetone or projector plastic. You know considering how long projectors existed in society prior to the computer evolution, there should just be tons of that stuff hanging out at dollar stores and freaking you know places like that, but that doesn't really seem to be the case

      Hi mate, glad it helped, cardstock is much easier to work with.
      Yeah I agree, you dont see OHP's about at all, and the sheet price reflects that it is a no longer mass used in schools lol

    EXCELLENT! Finally a simple explanation. Lets get senciling! Im cutting out an eagle. I wish you could see it. I saved the inspiration piece on my Pinterest file for Painted eagle. It looks like an Early American household plaque motif. Very exciting! Robin in NC USA 2024

    If you want to make a decent, multiuse, stencil... get some medium heavy card stock (I use cereal boxes and single ply cardboard). Then, mix Mineral Oil (or baby oil... same thing, just with a fragrance) and mix 3 oil to 1 acetone. Put it in a misting bottle and give the card 2 coats. Not too much... don't soak it! Then leave it for a while (I batch a load and leave it at least a week).
    Your cutting method (feel?) will be a bit different as mineral oil doesn't fully dry. Give it a bash and you'll get what I mean 👍😁
    The stencils are much more resilient to the paint, stand up to light rain and tend not to curl up during use.
    Tip... to speed up the drying time I use tinfoil and a small travel iron. Get it good and hot then remove the foil. Turn and repeat.🤙

    Thanks for your insights. I use cardstock for my stencils, but you did trigger my memory when you mentioned the wax coated card. I took a class in Japanese stencil techniques more than 40 years ago. In that process, the mulberry paper stencil was sealed with varnish made from pomegranates, if I remember correctly. I'm guessing a coat of Varnish or gel medium would probably work well to seal and preserve stencils made from cardstock.
    BTW, it's GSM not GMS thank you. GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. I think it evolved out of stacking a certain number of sheets, then weighing them. The thicker the paper the higher the GSM.

    • @splinteredstudios
      @splinteredstudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooops how did I not notice that in the edit, yeah GSM.
      Varnish made from pomegranates is super interesting, Japanese paper cutting is out of this world.
      Yeah I guess that would work, my only concern would be the paper warping due to the moisture

    Thanks a lot for the video. I have a question. I am afraid that people have asked this question many times though. Do you use glossy paper or just regular thick paper?

    what's the simplest easiest way of making 1 or 2 metre high letter stencils? Also would using stencils and waterproof paint onto a giant tarp be a viable cheaper solution than paying hundreds of pounds for a formal PVC banner?

    • @splinteredstudios
      @splinteredstudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      scale it on comp and no painting on tarp will not work, it will just flake off

    what are the dimensions of that card stock you have in that box, it looks huge! Also I'm wondering if this "card" stuff you're using is the same stuff we call Poster Board here in the states?

    • @splinteredstudios
      @splinteredstudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's regular A1 card not poster board, thats called foam board in the UK

    Acetone is a paint removing liquid however Acetate is the clear sheet of material often used on overhead projectors or arts & crafts 🤣😂. You can buy it in different thicknesses too, but the price more than likely inflates as the thickness increases. Great tips so far though & now I am going to continue watching 👍🏼😁
