  • Want to help reduce air-cooled VW engine temperatures?
Here's a short How-To video demonstrating how to fit a 1.5 litre deep sump to an air-cooled VW Type 1 engine.
This is a fairly easy DIY job and can be done with a regular tool kit.

Hi Mauricio, the main idea behind fitting a deep sump is to combat oil surges on performance engines, which leave no oil in the sump and can starve other components of oil.
For example, when an aircooled engine revs a certain amount of oil from the sump is driven to the heads and rocker gear to lubricate. On a performance engine, especially being used aggressively, this is even more so; almost filling the whole rocker cover.
In this instance if you were to only have a stock sump, you wouldn't have enough oil in the system to cope with this demand, and this lack of oil can destroy an engine pretty quickly.
This is a necessity on a performance aircooled engine, but a nice thing to have for a stock motor also.
    Hope that makes sense.
We will have more videos up soon!

Hello, did you notice temperature decrease with an extra oil sump?

    Hi there !
What is the benefit of this additional sump?
Thanks for sharing and continue with more videos!

It is mostly to prevent oil starvation under hard acceleration, cornering and braking - but additional oil should also assist with temperature management.

If you leave them stock you dont need this.
