I agree with tommy on this one. The g wagon is just a status symbol. The people that buy these don’t know what portal axels are. They don’t know what lockers do. And they definitely don’t take them off roading. It’s just a flex to own one

Yep, I bought a used Benz when I was younger, found out the cost to repair was ridiculous, dealer or no. I was amused by the on hold recording playing "enjoy free espresso and putting green while you wait for your car to be serviced" until I realized that meant this was gonna be expensive... Even non-dealer people assume you have money and hike their prices and there's instant class envy attitude, people act like you cut them off even if you change lanes a quarter mile ahead of them, this is where I learned that to road rage against someone reveals you have an inferiority complex.
Owning a Mercedes works against you in any negotiation, some women are instantly attracted, revealing they're worthless, it was a nice car, drove like a steel cloud, but for the money, you're going to get more car elsewhere, and I for sure don't trust Mercedes workmanship after the planned obsolescence started being built into it and I saw many nice well cared for cars stalled at the side of the road or in the road the failure was so dramatic and sudden and without warning. Probably because of the wiring harness being sandwiched between two plastic panels until the vibration rubbed through the wires insulation, causing a $50k repair bill in cars 5 years old.
No thanks. I Don't care how low the price is, I'm probably never going to own a Mercedes again, I'm not into the status thing, to me that's idiots revealing how stupid they are to value the envy of others. I would MUCH rather be anonymous in a sleeper car with equivalent luxury.

I traded in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 Cabriolet with 39k miles on it back in June for almost what I paid for it 2.5 years earlier and then watched it sit on the dealer lot while they listed it for $13k more than what they gave me for it. They kept lowering the price and lowering the price until finally in October of 2022 it disappeared from their inventory. They were asking less than what they gave me for it on trade in at that time. Not sure if they sold it or if they sent it to auction but either way, they lost money on that deal. I would love a G-wagon and I would off-road it (I take my 2022 Lexus GX off road all the time) but they are a bit out of my price range.

I am not a fan of manufacturers artificially creating a limited inventory and then asking crazy prices. An interesting video would be to analyze the financial cost to manufacturers of building these special vehicles versus the price they ask for them. Can't see Mercedes ever making a lot of G Wagons due to the poor gas mileage. Also as others have mentioned, there is the cost of ownership like maintenance and insurance. I think as interest rates continue to rise the cost of every expensive item will come down to a point where the target customer might again be able to afford the item. I can't see the cost of certain exclusive vehicles ever coming down too much though. Porsche is never going to make many of the GT3 RS or GT2 RS so there will always be enough people who can easily afford those rare models. I am just very glad to NOT be in the market for any vehicle or property at the moment. Yikes!

Saying the G Wagon is the most reliable Mercedes in the past 30 years is really not saying anything at all. If i was 100 miles from a mechanic on an off road trail, I would trust a 1998 4Runner with 250,000 miles and a rear locker before I would ever think about a G Wagon. That 4Runner in good shape probably will cost you around $6,000.

I totally disagree. As a highline car dealer and lessor, I first bought a G wagon (Gelandewagen) in 2002 and have driven many since. I would personally NEVER buy one and never chose to drive one even though I usually could. Functionally, the vehicle is extremely limited. What good is it? Other than offroad, it's only a status symbol. It is not ergonomic or comfortable, either in the driver's seat or the rear seats. It has a terrible turning radius, a short wheelbase, and a high center of gravity so it's not nimble and has a lousy ride. At highway speed it's like a giant shoebox going down the road with high wind / road noise and awful fuel economy. Its origin is from the 70s as a military vehicle built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. When military use was discontinued a marketer in Stuttgart had an idea to keep the factory going: let's give it a leather interior some lux car amenities, put an MB star on the hood and sell it to Americans. It worked!

I agree, I test drove one in 2012, back when a G63 was "only"120K and you could get a discount. After 10 minutes behind the wheel, I knew it would be a horrible vehicle for every day use. Felt unstable at 80 mph, crap gas mileage and as you stated not really comfortable, yeah the doors sound awesome when they are shut and the thing is built like a vault.
What's funny is that it's supposed to be the ultimate utility vehicle , but it come with 21 inch wheels and low profile street tires.

@@33Luger that's great and that's what it's all about. I do realize everybody has different opinions and is different regarding wants needs and what they can afford etc. What made me react so harshly was hearing at one point some of those cars were up to like 250 Grand or even $300,000. Also, some people purchase those if they come way down in price and then the price for maintenance, labor, and parts down the road wipe them out. Also maybe if I drove one I would change more of my mind as well. For me, there are so many cars or SUVs Etc that are so much less expensive than this that I would want to drive. Mercedes announced that they were going to stop production on the G class by 2020 and that pushed the prices up on top of the chip shortage / c*vid car taxes and dealer mark ups. Then mercedes said they will continue making the G class till 2024 causing prices to come down as 2022 models were no longer “the last ones” to be made. When they call off the G lass again the ‘last models’ will shoot up in prices. Imo

Most luxury cars are overvalued with their MSRP, so it's just reasonable to have huge depreciation for used luxury cars, especially as demand falls off the cliff for many of these models. Unless a Corvette SUV is coming out by 2024, I'm definitely looking to get a preowned Lambo Urus for below/around $100K or perhaps a used Audi RS Q8 for even a lot less.

I bought my 2021 2-Door Manual Transmission Bronco for $30,555. I'm good. No G-Wagon for me. And I bet I get more attention from my vehicle than this one (from just average people).
Interesting take on the suggested three aspects of "Iconic Vehicles":
    1. Does what it says its going to do.
    2. Reliable.
    3. Fun.
    My take version of this:
    1. 2-doors, not 4.
    2. Fun.
Literally every 2-door vehicle that is also fun is iconic. Reliability and its performance at the Taco Bell drive through are "nice to have", not must haves. Look it up man.

As an owner of several G Wagons, let me give you the background information.
In 1971 (53 years ago), the Mercedes G Wagon was designed and created by Daimler Mercedes and several Iranian (Persian) engineers at the specific request of the King of Iran (Persia) Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. This was a secret project until February 1979.
The G Wagon was initially intended to be a military vehicle exclusive to Iran (Persia) and it was never intended to be commercialized to be used by the civilian population.
Due to the 1978 revolution in Iran, the Mercedes G Wagon was never delivered to Iran and stayed at the Mercedes factory for over a year.
Since Mercedes was left with thousands of military-style vehicles (G Wagon), they couldn’t sell them to the general population. During that one year, Mercedes took away a lot of the Iranian military equipment, repainted the G Wagons with different commercial paints, and in February 1979 (45 years ago), introduced the G Wagon to the world.
The father of the G Wagon is rooted in Iran (Persian), and today, we would not have the G Wagon accessible to us had the 1978 Iranian revolution didn’t occur.
So, we owe our deepest gratitude to the Iranians (Persians) for the G Wagon.

I just got rid of an Audi Q7 because the warranty just expired and there is no way I’m going to pay for their repairs. Brake jobs are $1,500. It costs over $1,000 to replace the battery. After just 7 years the leather was starting to crack. So what are you paying for? We traded it in and got $26k and bought a baby bronco and are very happy with it. I doubt I would have bought one of these Mercedes if they were selling at $40k
