    I still sew on my Kenmore 385 I bought 46yrs ago. It also has the button attachment which I love. Made all my kids and my work clothes on it. Now I'm sewing my old lady clothes, lol. Finally invested in a brother 1034dx serger. Bought my first pattern weights from Joann's about 15-20yrs ago and added on other things that work as well. Much prefer the weights to pinning the patterns. I also use paper to copy my store bought patterns so as to preserve the tissue. My foldable cutting table was my thrift store find for $25. I also use bed sheets to make light weight summer clothes. Did recently purchase the friskers cutting mat set and really like it. My pride is my brother se400 and pe800 embroidery machines. I keep a piece of parchment paper under my cutting mat for ironing on stabilizer to protect my iron. If you don't find me in my sewing room check the kitchen. Great video. New subscriber here. Been sewing 62 yrs and started on a Singer treadle sewing machine. Stitch on.

    Best advice is keep your gear, stash, and notions as minimalist as possible because sewing can be a clutter monster. I decluttered an entire spare room devoted to sewing down to three plastic shoeboxes and one small tiered crafting box for my thread pins and needles. You don't need a ton of stuff to make garments, but the less you own, the less clutter you'll have, which will save you time and $. Who knew if I only owned two seam rippers I could find them faster than when I owned 50? 😅 I also used up/donated my fabric stash and now buy what I need for each project. Great video!

    Thank you Ms. Lydia for for this Video. You explained it so simply with no difficulties. I now have the Sewing Machine Bug. My Wife had gotten a beginner Singer Sewing Machine brand new. She hasn't used it so I thought to myself a little time and patience I could do this. I been hand sewing since I was 11 years old and spent 10 years in the Army and always had a Sewing Kit. I am waiting for some heavy duty needles so I can get started. Thank you for all of your expertise !

I'm used to just winging it with diy's and the skirts I've cobbled together before worked out okay - but it was a lot of work and I must say a pattern was way helpful with the darts and shit 😆 I'm gonna figure out how to do it right with the prettier curtains I've got left ✌

    I have a new Singer model 2277 sewing machine which I purchased online as our local Wal-Mart was out of most machines at the time and we don't have a sewing store locally. So far I have not got the machine where I can use it as I have been having bobbin problems and the bobbin thread not being picked up correctly. I want to use my machine to primarily make a quilt or two then see what else I can do with it. I have most of the items you showed us and in some cases have many of them like thread, needles, rulers, and scissors.

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are having bobbin problems check your manual, it should provide some trouble shooting, sometimes those problems are as simple as mis-threading something or the needle is in backward or the bobbin is placed wrong. I hope the issue is minor and you can fix it!

      You can use a cutting mat behind whatever you are tracing :D

    Which sewing machine out of those would you recommend for someone that has never used a sewing machine?

    • @LydiaNaomi

      Any machine that isn't specifically tailored to embroidery or quilting will be great!

    You didn't mention pliers. My emergency has them, but what are they for?

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure I've ever seen pliers in a sewing machine kit. Maybe tweezers for guiding the thread on a serger.

    Hi, I am doing some research on a beginner sewing machine for domestic use - Looking at the Singer 8280 , would I be able to sew tracksuit material with this sewing machine ? It is fairly basic sewing machine, however, this would probably be the toughest material I would sew - Not interested in sewing denims at this stage - Would really like your input if this is a decent sewing machine to start with ? Looking forward to hearing from you

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not too keen on Singer in general, though I do own and like the Quantum and know that the Heavy Duty has good reviews, beyond that I would direct you first to a Janome and next to maybe a Brother. But your best bet would be to look up reviews on that particular machine and see what people say. Amazon can be pretty good for this!

    Hello ! I haven’t started sewing yet but I want to! Does it have to be polyester sew all thread ? Or can it be cotton ? Will that also work for 90% of simple beginner garments ?

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cotton is great!

    I'm trying to learn how to sew because my mommom(grandmother) was supposed to teach me but life got so crazy and she just passed away from a brain tumor about a month ago so I feel like I owe it to her to learn to sew I'm just so lost as to where to start

    I have a question. I don’t want to start out sewing small projects like pillow cases or headbands. I want to go straight to sewing clothes. Is this a possibility for someone who has never sewn before?

      absolutely! I have seen multiple beginners start with my milkmaid dress pattern and tutorial. There are so many tutorials on YT that show how to make really cute and simple clothing :) th-cam.com/video/3XDJg5y-G9g/w-d-xo.html

      No worries, thats a cutting mat. You can find them at craft stores and sewing stores. You need them when you use a rotary blade.
