    When you purchase your ruler, place clear packing tape on both sides. That way the markings won't wear off over time.

      Simple buy Olfa frosted acrylic ruler(QR for imperial and MQR for metric) once and that's it.

    Just discovered you on Answer in Progress. I was a costumer with my local little theater company for a few years, and I studied costuming for a year, in college way back in 1990. Mostly I hand sew now, just repairs. But I'm retiring soon and the Pfaff I inherited is about to be put back to use! So glad I found your channel. It'll be good to refresh my rusty knowledge. A tip for hand sewers. I keep a votive candle in my sewing kit to wax the thread. Also, you reminded me of something we used to say in the costume shop, I'm sure it's a well known phrase, "As you sew, so shall you rip."

    Thank you so much for this series, This feels so much like a friend giving me some grade advice and not a shill just unsubtly advertising to me over the course of a few videos. The alternatives and suggestion to start with a normal iron was such a amazing touch

    I just got a machine from my dad for my 23rd bday and was JUST in the store today and all the rulers were like $12 and they weren’t see through or anything. When I saw yours was only $9 I knew I had to get it. Love your videos and also your drive/passion. It’s very clear

    Always check your chalk if it really goes away. I bought one in cheap craft store and after 3 washes it’s still there. I prefer soap for marking. It comes in one color only but if you make a mistake, just a bit of water will help. It’s not a regular soap it’s called tailors soap

  • @alejanewman6669

    I REALLY appreciate the detail between the pins! I didn't even think about those things. Like glass and rounded. I just learned how to use a sewing machine like 24ish hours ago and I appreciate these little details. Cause, baby loves a knit fabric lol

    • @GloryAllan
      @GloryAllan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The pins are essential! I started with plastic, had a few melt unexpectedly but it wasn't an issue. Glass will protect against that, but they're also relatively affordable tools. When you have 100 pins, losing 1 melted pin to the iron isn't worst 😂 Glass tends to be more expensive, so they'll last longer against the iron... hoping you don't lose any tho! Imo... either works, but plastic is cheaper haha
      Yesss round vs sharp. Same for sewing needles, use a stretch or jersey rounded needle for knit fabric so you won't tear you're fabric. Also if you're sewing knit, some stabilizer helps for lighter fabric to prevent it from dropping through your throat plate (I use tissue paper when needed).
      Last lil tidbit about knit, try to cut fabric with everything level/flat. When working on a table, sometimes the fabric hangs over the edge, which stretches your fabric and might lead to a distorted cut.
      GOOD LUCK 🤓🤓🫶

    I agree with this so much. I am pretty new to sewing but I already have a thread cutter - awesome thing when you are threading and rethreading your machine and the obvious - scissors, ruler. And of course - clips. They are so, so great. Additionally, you can create seam allowance with them and you don't need to take them off when sewing. I sew small scale so it is live saving.
    I would also mention that pins can be long and short - short pins are great for details, long pins, if used vertically, like you do - make the pinning much easier as you can gather more fabric at once.
    For chalk option I'd add pastel pencils - one is enough for a long time and you can sharpen it with an exacto knife. I haven't tried the heat activated markers (they disappear when ironed) but I know people tend to use them as well.
    I am also waiting for a rotary knife, which I think will come in handy while cutting delicate fabrics. It's a real pain in the butt, have done it already and although successful - I have better things to do.

    Just started. You got a follow

  • @DeaconBastyonDuncan
    @DeaconBastyonDuncan 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    With your tape measure you also need to ensure that is a tailor's tape measure or tailor's measure because it has a fibreglass centre between the imperial and the metric side and that stops the tape measure from stretching so over time other tape measures without a fibreglass centre stretch so you won't get an accurate measurement and your garment will be off, a quick edit with regards to your pins placing them vertically as you mentioned that you do actually creates issues with your fit because when you're pushing it through the fabric causes it to bunch slightly where as if you place them horizontally and sew over them your pieces of fabric that you're sewing remain flat and you will get a better seam and fit.

    • @marikothecheetah9342
      @marikothecheetah9342 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      "when you're pushing it through the fabric causes it to bunch slightly" - this is why you even it and straighten the fabric a bit. It works, and requires way fewer pins to do the job. "where as if you place them horizontally " - yeah, saw that, too many pins for my taste. Why_so_many_pins. Use long pins vertically and you save time and pins.

If upgrading for (partially) aesthetics is an option, look into LDH scissors -- they make beautiful scissors and snips in a matte black finish that are the most well-balanced left-handed fabric shears i have ever used. They are an immigrant owned company, and support domestic violence charities. (Not sponsored lol i just really like their product😂)

    Hey I started sewing recently to make fursuits and such. There is kind of a limited amount of high quality TH-cam videos on that subject and was wondering if it is something you would be interested in getting into yourself. Relatively speaking there are plenty of furries willing to pay for high quality stuff from a selling perspective. Also might be a good way for you to grow your channel a bit more. Please let me know if you'd ever work with faux fur and going over need to knows and such. I'm sure MANY people would love to watch you learn/ experiment with it if you haven't.

    While I appreciated the curated list of items. And even the branded items. Paying an extra $12 for shipping seemed excessive. I appreciate your videos, and subscribe and watch most of them. But spending an extra 20% for some clips, chalk, ruler, tape over just going to the local store seemed a bit excessive. I'm happy to do it cause I can afford to. But you should work out a way to make it less impactful for others.

    • @kiwijustcarol
      @kiwijustcarol 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      in the sewing world most patterns, tools, mats and rulers are in imperial measurements. You get used to it and it becomes easier to sew a 1/4 inch allowance than 0.63cm. I also live in a metric country but have adapted to imperial for the art of sewing.
