    Fun fact: the Chili 🌶 at the end of the tomato 🍅 pin cushion is actually a strawberry 🍓! and it’s full of emery that sharpens your dull pins. You just have to stab the pin into the strawberry a few times!

      @withwendy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +447

      Still biologically confusing but I'll take it! I don't think any of my pins have been with me long enough to need sharpening, they meet their end via getting bent or having the head fall off before they lose their stabby powers :(

    • @Goddess276
      @Goddess276 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      @@withwendy you can use it for your sewing needles as well as your sewing machine needles. That away they stay sharper for longer

    • @alma27ram
      @alma27ram 4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Okey I looked it up, apparently they were invented in the Victorian era. Tomatoes represent good luck and good harvest, in the winter the tomatoes are gone. In that time pins needles where expensive they where part of the decor. Times have really changed! Thanks wendy learned something interesting today!!!🌶🍅🍓

    • @_commonthread
      @_commonthread 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Christina Marie this is half true ;) I feel like if you are shopping cheap clothes like H & M, it’s often cheaper to buy, but for me I choose to buy only ethically produced clothing, so it works out to be cheaper or equal to make them myself. Fabric can be really $$$!

    • @toniashump5345
      @toniashump5345 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes it really is a fun hobby to start! Do it!!! you can find expensive clothes that have landed at the thrift store & give them new life❤️. Best thing- get a sewing machine & just start! one of my sewing teachers even had us sew the different stitches on scrap fabric so we can get a sense of the way it felt going through the machine & see the different stitches/settings.

    Thrift stores and second hand stores are a great place to find sewing notions. I was able to get a plastic bag full of hooks & eyes, sew on snaps, and a bunch of other things for $2.50. I was also able to find a big, thick clear ruler for $4!

    I've been WithWendy since she was turning round-collar shirts into v-necks on her bedroom floor, and honestly now she's got this entire Streamer Girl setup with the mic and the overhead photography; I'm so proud of you. Thank you for the many years of small projects. Seeing you get frustrated but work through it anyway has been really helpful for me as well, as a kid who was always told that I must be perfect and talented, I quit easily when things aren't going my way. Seeing you share your experiences throughout the years was crucial for me to fix this behavior in me, and it became easier for me to accept that failing is just part of learning something new. So really, thanks to you and your seam ripper.
    I just wanna say, I want to challenge you to make a full garment using a 5$ sewing machine :)) It's one of those portable ones that got heavily advertised on TV Shopping networks in the early 2000s. I had one, and it was what I had to use when I started. It would be both funny, but also inspiring to see you finish something with a simple machine, and mostly educational about the difference between a REALLY cheap portable versus a decent beginner machine.

    The 'hanging chili' from your pin cushion is for sharpening pins and needles. Just stab ‘hanging chili' with pin or needle to sharpen.

  • @juadonna
    @juadonna 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Don't know if you know this, but when you need to rip a seam open, here is a tip. Once you get thru the backstitch area. grip one seam allowance in your non-dominant hand's fingers, with the stitched seam running away from your body, and ease the little protected end (little bead thingy) of the ripper below the stitches with your other hand. Then carefully push the throat of the seam ripper blade away from you and into the threads of the seam. Re-grip the seam as needed, go slowly, keeping the seam slighty under tension so that you can see where the top and the bobbin threads meet. Make sure you can see the long pointy part of the ripper and keep it away from any fabric. I've been sewing for over 57 years and I just figured this out a month ago while sewing masks for my family. There is always something to learn.
    I enjoy your videos and your obvious enthusiasm. Keep safe and treasure your time with your loved ones.

    I'd argue those must haves for a sewing machine. My machine doesn't have automatic needle threading, one touch controls and the speed control is just how hard I press the foot pedal. She's also an absolute beast. I also only had a straight stitch foot for several months, and made full garments using only straight stitch. You can also technically get around not having a free arm but it is very helpful. My must haves are buttonhole settings, be that one step or 4, a free arm, big throat and a built in bobbin winder. And a metal frame/parts.

    • @betterwilma
      @betterwilma 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yea, those features are very modern and they're def not necessary. I'd say it's more important to get a powerful high-performance machine like a vintage metal frame one that can handle e.g. multiple layers of denim and has a good variety of stitch patterns for stretch fabrics. I just bought a Bernette 440 (30yo machine) second-hand and before making the purchase looked it up on TH-cam and found a video where it sews 8 layers of denim, leather and other challenging materials. I got it and yes, it works like a charm! New computerized machines are attractive and I had been wanting one for a while too, but after googling I learned that the more fancy features a machine has, the more there is to break and they just don't last as long. Just think about the life span of a phone nowadays and a Nokia 3310 20 years ago. A lot of them still work.

    I have a fix for that Ikea trash can, when it doesn't want to pop open. It's because the metal has warped out a bit, and the plastic rim around the front side isn't sitting on top of the metal perfectly. I'm talking about the plastic rim section right next to the "push" spot on the top. So if you can use your thumbs to push the metal band back in, under the plastic (it may even pop a bit, but may only be a slight movement) then the plastic will sit on top correctly, so that the latch is in the correct spot. I hope I explained that well!!

    I mentioned that I was looking for a sewing machine and an old classmate of mine just gave me her in-table Singer model 347. I am honored. I have always wanted to have a sewing machine (I can mend by hand, but haven't used a sewing machine since Home Economics ~25 years ago) and now I have one. I want to do right by it and learn how to use it. So glad there are channels like this one around these days. Been sewing for decades I agree with every word you said. The stationary is new to me but not for long. I intend to order today! Instead of an expensive French curve I went for a clear thing called a Fashion Ruler. Had mine for decades but they are still in stores. Lots of curves with a straight edge. I also have a clear plastic right angle triangle ruler from drafting supplies that I've used almost to shreds. The tools we are lost without!

Well, recently on a shopping trip to Walmart, i found the exact one you use and snatched that bad boy up! I love it! (just wish it held more water) Love you and your videos!!!

    Thanks so much for this! It's so helpful. I've always wanted to make my own clothes and been planning to buy a sewing machine for so long and I finally I bought one! But due to quarantine I'll receive it after 2 weeks. But It's fine. What matters is I took a step to start doing what I want. love from Italy!

    I was getting some spackle for my brother's project. And he asked for me to get a small white bucket that is for it. It's the perfect size for those little sewing tidbits that you throw away. Has been a life changer when it comes to sewing trash. They don't cost that much and if you don't like it being plain just decorate it. 🙂💖

    Great video for beginners like me. I am in process of accumulating the basic tools and some starter fabric. Second hand sheets and fabric much cheaper than Joanne’s. But I have bought some nice fabric for future. Started out making 2 pillow cases. Now making simple tote to carry some supplies to a Joanne sewing class. Patterns intimidating. Going to Make practice pieces out of cotton sheets

    I have the same sewing machine and I love it! Yay twinsies! Honestly I bought it at Walmart many, many years ago thinking that if I didn't like this sewing thing they had a 3 month return window. Well, sewing stuck and the machine hasn't had any issues except for thread tangles when it gets dirty inside (and I'm pretty bad at de-linting all the thread bits that end up in there so it's like little tumble weeds when I do get around to it.)
    Some stuff I can't live without include:
    Seam roller - this will save you from ironing every seam after you sew! It's just a little roller that presses seams flat and creates that crisp edge you need to get nice lines to sew along. It costs $9 and you can find them at hardware stores, too. I use a wooden one made for wallpaper!
    Disappearing ink - Wendy mentions this but I am a die hard fan. It's great for labeling pieces and any kinds of markings because they'll stay until you're ready to remove them. A spritz of water is all it takes.
    Freezer paper - this is just great for tracing patterns on to because it's cheap and available at every grocery.

    My mom used to be a seamstress, so she already has all of these. I really want to start sewing, and although my mom has a sewing machine but it’s really old and confusing to use. I found a sewing machine that’s new, but it’s a good brand and at a low price. I’ve sewed before, and I think I will enjoy learning to sew more advanced things.

    I have a body form that needed adjusting to match my pouchy tummy area so I paraded it out with wadding & put a Lycra singlet over the top to smooth it out. It makes it so much easier when it replicates your own body shape.

    A good tip when making your sewing tool belt is buying vintage/ old for the big stuff. Like I have a vintage machine and iron and I love them so much more than any new ones at the same price range.
