The Singer Quantum Stylus 9960 has excellent specs, but for $449.00, it's not rated as Heavy Duty and its stitch quality could be better. Reportedly, a new Singer Model 9960 released in 2020 corrected issues that plagued the original machine. The original 9960 is out of production, making replacement parts difficult to find. The Brother CS6000i is now $210.00, but you can't go wrong with a machine that does so much. It delivers a huge amount of bang for the buck at all sewing skill levels. The Heavy Duty Singer 4452 is mechanical. I would buy its more versatile computerized version, Model 6800C, instead. It's around $399.00 at Joann's. All of the Heavy Duty Singers are said to be marginally better than the cheaper HD Brother machines. Janome sewing machines are great, but overpriced. No freebies from them. You pay for every stitch they make.

4:05 Always have to remember, those cheap 100-200$ second hand machines were at the time the cost of 3-4 monthly wages! That's of course why they are made so well and stood the test of time.

At the time I had a great stylist and relaxed hair (meaning he knew how not to damage it - plus he was down the street from my job so I didn't skimp out on appts). Then there was a conditioner called Mermade - OMG! It was low PH and sealed your hair UP! Discontinued! Then when I flat ironed my hair, I'd dab a little water and ProLine Hair Food on each section, which they still make but they messed up the formula. My hair was great. I'm natural now and have grey which altered my hair texture, don't have a good stylist nor the same products. But it's a fond memory! LOL

I have the SInger quantum and use it exclusively at this time. Otherwise I was using an old kenmore and an industrial, which is really the best. You can also check out Bernina, I hear good things about them.
I work in construction - specifically, concrete form foundations. For a long time I've been wanting to learn how to make alterations - hem, take in waists, add pockets for tools for both pants and shirts. Because of the inspiration I've received from Lydia, I've finally started on the road to learn some of these skills ... starting with her recommendations for a sewing machine. I suspect I'm going to end up going further than alterations because sewing is both skill and art - offering the enjoyment and fulfillment of real accomplishment. I'm definitely a fan of Lydia!! Thank you for the video! I’m a professional sewer who just started in 2020. At first I bought the Singer 4432 just because it was so popular and it says “heavy duty”. But apparently it’s not really heavy duty since the body still made by plastics. I broke mine after 1 year due to my high intensity use, I brought it to the service center many times but no use. After that I bought an industrial sewing machine, and boy oh boy, my life pretty much changed 👍 So fast and so reliable. Will never go back to portable sewing machine 😂 (I still bought another janome portable solely for the zigzag and buttonhole function). Ps: a friend of mine own the Janome HD1000 and it’s very sturdy!! She often sews leather with it and it seems like it goes well. So I recommend that one if you’re looking for a heavy duty portable sewing machine!

Im not a skilled but it's been my dream to have a sewing machine that finally got it from my daughter who bought me one for my 66th birthday! This machine really is a great treasure to have on my retirement that I now have all the time in the world to sew my own clothes, make my own home essentials personalized! Well this at least is my goal in having this machine! Got a Singer heavy duty 4432 and wow it's way too complicated than the vintage sewing machine that my mom had!! I splurged a bit on my first machine. I have sewn all my life with my grandma on her machines and such but now that she has moved away I took maybe a 5 year break and wanted to start again! I got a Juki Hzl-LB5100 and I love it! My local sewing shop where I bought it let me have an hour lesson on any questions about the machine and such. I don’t have use of my legs so I sew exclusively with the button controls a big part of choosing my machine.

Ok ok so let me say that I almost burst into tears but more about that later! I am finally at a place where I want to learn how to sew. My Abueluta and my mom sewed all the time every Easter as a child my brothers and I modeled clothes made by them. My mom gave me her sewing machine a year ago because we had to clean her apartment because she was going to a hospice to suffer the ravages of cancer and meet her maker in the afterlife. The tears I almost cried were for the fact that my mothers name was Lydia. I always wanted to learn how to sew and she always would say I have to teach you but you are so busy. But now I want to carry on the legacy. So I can make things for my children and teach them too. This is art and a skill set worthy of having! Thank you in advance for your lessons!

I enjoyed watching this review. You covered a lot of ground and well organized. I would have to say for myself a mid-60 woman that I would prefer a threader because my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. And having a sewing machine with a front loader for bobbin was such a pain that I would prefer a top loader.
I'm new-ish at sewing and inherited an old (1950's) machine that only does straight stitches. When I figured out that zigzag is best for knit clothing, I decided to invest in a new machine. I bought a computerized machine, kinda similar to the Singer that you show: Babylock Jubliant. I LOVE the adjustable speed. As a beginner, I want to go slow in tricky spots and I find that I'm gradually increasing the speed as I am more comfortable and/or have long lengths to sew. Surprisingly, I find that I really like the automatic threader. The one time I tried threading by hand, I had a really difficult time. My eyesight in my 40s is not what it was when I was younger. The auto threader is so easy and quick. And it's one less thing to worry about, since learning to sew clothing has its own challenges & frustrations.
This was great! I'm going to the Raleigh Sewing Expo next week to look at all of the machines. I used to sew patterns when I was 16 (20 years ago) but have moved so much I haven't since then. Now I'm in my own house and am buying a machine. I decided my budget is $500. I think I'm going to start with some cotton rope baskets so your heavy duty focus was so informative. Thanks!!
All the machines I have are hands me downs except one . My oldest one is actually from 1952 my grandfather bought it for my grandmother brand new with all the attachments.I even have the receipt where he did a payment plan for $357.56 which back then was a massive amount of money. But it’s lasted my grandmother used it my entire life and when she passed it was handed down to me and I love it.
Thank you for this clear, informative video. When I started sewing for the first time in my life four years ago, I had no idea what features I should be looking for. This video would have been helpful. By googling I learned that there were mechanical and computerized machines, so that became my main criterion: no computer. Many appliances are now computerized and it is that part which breaks first and usually can't be fixed. I settled on an inexpensive Janome (model not sold in North America, I think) on which I learned to sew using TH-cam videos, and now I sew mostly on a Singer Featherweight and my late mother-in-law's heavier late '60s Janome. I am a 67 year old teacher and I now make most of the clothes I wear to school, as well as garments for my friends and family. I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thanks! I'm not a beginner but I haven't been able to sew by machine since I was a kid. I finally have a place to live that has room for dedicated crafting, and I was ready to go with the default well-reviewed one. I'm happy to hear that the computer part is optional!
I got my very first 1945 singer sewing machine from my employer. She gave it to me last 2015 since she's not using it anymore so I was more than happy. Compared to new sewing machines now, I still prefer iron cast sewing machines because they're heavy duty. I got myself a motorized iron cast sewing machine this year and I also loved it. You just really need to learn the skill of trouble shooting the basic problems in sewing like the tension in stitches which is really kind of annoying at first but if you get use to doing it everytime then it becomes very easy. I don't really care much about new versions of sewing machine these days but seriously, I prefer the classic iron cast sewing machines.

I don't know if it is popular (or even sold) on the USA market but I am very happy with my Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116 (their cheapest one 😬) for which I paid 300 EUR 3 years ago (360 USD aprox.). It is sturdy but not too noisy, it can sew button holes and thick fabric,... I only wish the speed could be regulated other than with my foot because sometimes she takes the highway 😁 but still... I love it. Thank you for the video! I would definitely recommend it to friends looking for a sewing machine.

I've been eyeing the singer 4452 because I plan on working a lot with heavy weight raw denim, 16-21 oz, and this machine looks like a good option. You can get a refurbished model direct from singer for $180 and they do a 10% off discount when you enter your email. So for about $160 shipped you get one of the only machines on your chart that checks every box.

My mother is also a very talented sewer and she started her own brand so I'm going to help her selling her creations in the city where I live. That's why I'm thinking of buying a sewing machine to do any adjustments that some customers might need and was thinking to get a very basic machine just for that. But then I know myself and I know I will want to start sewing my own clothes (I've started knitting recently and loving the creative process :)). Hi Lydia. I think this is a good review for beginning sewists. I have a computerized Brother machine. I bought a smaller mechanical Brother machine thinking I would take it with me on long road trips but found I had been spoiled by the bigger Brother! 😳 I sold the mechanical machine and searched and found the same older computerized Janome model that I had traded in for big Brother. I really like the Janome, but I was surprised to discover that they suggest proprietary needles, bobbins, and accessories for their machines, which I didn’t realize before. The Brother and some other machines out there accept more universal needles, feet, and other accessories - maybe a small matter to consider when buying and having access to supplies.
If I were buying a budget sewing machine today, it would be the computerized Brother HC1850 that sews a decent 850 stitches per minute. Currently $259.99 at Amazon, it offers much more than the Brother CS6000i for only around $50 more. With 130 stitches in 170 modes, 8 one-step buttonholes and more, it's great for seamsters and quilters of all skill levels. It won't bore users and newbies can easily grow into it. I might buy a HC1850 as a portable backup for my fabulous heavy-duty Bernina. It weighs a ton, with or without its hard carrying case.
I didn't take home ec and only started sewing to make masks- now I'm really liking it. I was looking at Singer 4423 but thinking that 4452 might be a big jump for just a little extra money. No real preference except my mother had a singer. I ordered one at the beginning of the pandemic that seems like a toy now but does the job. Your video was very helpful.
The Singer Quantum does have a speed adjust! I have this machine and love it. I also have a kenmore and Brother and they all work well. The reason the Quantum has 600 stitches is because they count each letter of the alphabet both in English and I think all the Russian alphabet

The best beginner machine I one with a speed control adjustment on the machine The machines without it can get going fullbast in a millisecond . It nice when you can sew really slow

I got a Brother SM3701 for $90 on sale from Joann (I think it's typically no higher that $150) and I've had it for about a year and a half. It's still running good. I recommend it for beginners

Looking back in my year of sewing I wished I spent a little more to get the Juki exceed 300 instead of the 2 brother machines I bought. My Juki makes such beautiful stitches- no birds nest, or bobbin issues.
@@TheElf1234 I bought the Juki exceed series 300. It's a domestic sewing machine. It's the earliest model of the series. The 300 is the same as the 400 and 600 version but without the bells and whistles. It's also 400-600 dollars less.
Great vid. I also encourage students to stop by sewing machine dealers and look at their selections. You don't have to buy, but, they will show you how to work the machine. Most have lessons and upgrading options. If you have older eyes it is a good idea to learn to use the auto needle threader.

I have had the LX3817 and I've gone through 3 of them over the course of my 7 year sewing life. I did before getting my 3rd try a conouterized brother and it came broken in box not the computer it just wouldn't sew forward so I took it back and exchanged it for the one I had have. My mom's bringing me a old brother machine that was gifted to me in high school but has been packed up. We don't know if it works or if I'll be comfortable with it so I appreciate this video for my future sewing endeavors.
I would consider an automatic thread cutter also . Singer quantum has that feature. After I saw the automatic thread cutter it is a must must for me . Saves a lot of thread and time. No hassle of making sure the tail is long enough before stitching .
I get you regarding the length, I thought your presentation was outstanding. during the pandemic i have become quite good with hand stitching but, i grw weary of the time it takes and am looking at a machine. this is a great help, keep it up!

15:21 from my understanding you don’t need more than 3-5 stitches . One stitch being a buttonhole (but you can fenaggle other stitches into one), one being straight, one being zig zag, and one being overlock or backstitch , it’s like you said most folk don’t use all the stitches. In fact I remember hearing so many people talking about how they really only use like 2 stitches on their machines even if they had 15k available. I think speed adjusting and foot height adjusting are incredibly important. Idk how important width adjusting is though.

I'm considering getting a singer heavy duty to make some canvas couch slipcovers! How do you like yours?
Wow, I can’t thank you enough for a very informative video. For the past week I’ve been researching sewing machines and I wish I would’ve come across this video at the beginning of the week. From my previous research I was thinking of the Singer heavy duty 4452, and I’m so happy to see that it makes it onto your list of excellent machines, it’s given me so much more confidence to go ahead and buy it. I’m an intermediate sewer and I have an old Kenmore sewing machine right now.

I splurged a bit on my first machine. I have sewn all my life with my grandma on her machines and such but now that she has moved away I took maybe a 5 year break and wanted to start again! I got a Juki Hzl-LB5100 and I love it! My local sewing shop where I bought it let me have an hour lesson on any questions about the machine and such. I don’t have use of my legs so I sew exclusively with the button controls a big part of choosing my machine.

Ok ok so let me say that I almost burst into tears but more about that later! I am finally at a place where I want to learn how to sew. My Abueluta and my mom sewed all the time every Easter as a child my brothers and I modeled clothes made by them. My mom gave me her sewing machine a year ago because we had to clean her apartment because she was going to a hospice to suffer the ravages of cancer and meet her maker in the afterlife. The tears I almost cried were for the fact that my mothers name was Lydia. I always wanted to learn how to sew and she always would say I have to teach you but you are so busy. But now I want to carry on the legacy. So I can make things for my children and teach them too. This is art and a skill set worthy of having! Thank you in advance for your lessons!

I was very lucky to be given a machine by one of my Sorors. It’s a very basic older Singer mechanical and I looooove it!
I enjoyed watching this review. You covered a lot of ground and well organized. I would have to say for myself a mid-60 woman that I would prefer a threader because my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. And having a sewing machine with a front loader for bobbin was such a pain that I would prefer a top loader.

I'm new-ish at sewing and inherited an old (1950's) machine that only does straight stitches. When I figured out that zigzag is best for knit clothing, I decided to invest in a new machine. I bought a computerized machine, kinda similar to the Singer that you show: Babylock Jubliant.
I LOVE the adjustable speed. As a beginner, I want to go slow in tricky spots and I find that I'm gradually increasing the speed as I am more comfortable and/or have long lengths to sew.
Surprisingly, I find that I really like the automatic threader. The one time I tried threading by hand, I had a really difficult time. My eyesight in my 40s is not what it was when I was younger. The auto threader is so easy and quick. And it's one less thing to worry about, since learning to sew clothing has its own challenges & frustrations.
the auto threader DOES come in handy! I really love it now!
I just upgraded from the Singer Simple to the Quantum Stylist. I hope the computer doesn't die out

This was great! I'm going to the Raleigh Sewing Expo next week to look at all of the machines. I used to sew patterns when I was 16 (20 years ago) but have moved so much I haven't since then. Now I'm in my own house and am buying a machine. I decided my budget is $500. I think I'm going to start with some cotton rope baskets so your heavy duty focus was so informative. Thanks!!

All the machines I have are hands me downs except one . My oldest one is actually from 1952 my grandfather bought it for my grandmother brand new with all the attachments.I even have the receipt where he did a payment plan for $357.56 which back then was a massive amount of money. But it’s lasted my grandmother used it my entire life and when she passed it was handed down to me and I love it.
Thank you for this clear, informative video. When I started sewing for the first time in my life four years ago, I had no idea what features I should be looking for. This video would have been helpful. By googling I learned that there were mechanical and computerized machines, so that became my main criterion: no computer. Many appliances are now computerized and it is that part which breaks first and usually can't be fixed. I settled on an inexpensive Janome (model not sold in North America, I think) on which I learned to sew using TH-cam videos, and now I sew mostly on a Singer Featherweight and my late mother-in-law's heavier late '60s Janome. I am a 67 year old teacher and I now make most of the clothes I wear to school, as well as garments for my friends and family. I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

Thanks! I'm not a beginner but I haven't been able to sew by machine since I was a kid. I finally have a place to live that has room for dedicated crafting, and I was ready to go with the default well-reviewed one. I'm happy to hear that the computer part is optional!

I got my very first 1945 singer sewing machine from my employer. She gave it to me last 2015 since she's not using it anymore so I was more than happy. Compared to new sewing machines now, I still prefer iron cast sewing machines because they're heavy duty. I got myself a motorized iron cast sewing machine this year and I also loved it. You just really need to learn the skill of trouble shooting the basic problems in sewing like the tension in stitches which is really kind of annoying at first but if you get use to doing it everytime then it becomes very easy. I don't really care much about new versions of sewing machine these days but seriously, I prefer the classic iron cast sewing machines.

I don't know if it is popular (or even sold) on the USA market but I am very happy with my Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116 (their cheapest one 😬) for which I paid 300 EUR 3 years ago (360 USD aprox.). It is sturdy but not too noisy, it can sew button holes and thick fabric,... I only wish the speed could be regulated other than with my foot because sometimes she takes the highway 😁 but still... I love it. Thank you for the video! I would definitely recommend it to friends looking for a sewing machine.

I've been eyeing the singer 4452 because I plan on working a lot with heavy weight raw denim, 16-21 oz, and this machine looks like a good option. You can get a refurbished model direct from singer for $180 and they do a 10% off discount when you enter your email. So for about $160 shipped you get one of the only machines on your chart that checks every box.

My mother is also a very talented sewer and she started her own brand so I'm going to help her selling her creations in the city where I live. That's why I'm thinking of buying a sewing machine to do any adjustments that some customers might need and was thinking to get a very basic machine just for that. But then I know myself and I know I will want to start sewing my own clothes (I've started knitting recently and loving the creative process :)). So I've decided to go for something that's at least $200 - $300 for that reason. Thanks a lot again for your help and for inspiring me so much! You sound really passionate :) and it's nice to subscribe to another curly girl ;) I'm a 3c but hey we both know why a satin pillow case is vital lol.
Wow this is wonderful! I am sooo happy to help you narrow down your list. Believe me approaching this video it was really daunting because I felt I didn’t know where to start but as I researched it all came together. There are certainly more wonderful machines out there that I didn’t look at but I would be comfortable with buying any of these machines.

Hi Lydia. I think this is a good review for beginning sewists. I have a computerized Brother machine. I bought a smaller mechanical Brother machine thinking I would take it with me on long road trips but found I had been spoiled by the bigger Brother! 😳 I sold the mechanical machine and searched and found the same older computerized Janome model that I had traded in for big Brother. I really like the Janome, but I was surprised to discover that they suggest proprietary needles, bobbins, and accessories for their machines, which I didn’t realize before. The Brother and some other machines out there accept more universal needles, feet, and other accessories - maybe a small matter to consider when buying and having access to supplies.

If I were buying a budget sewing machine today, it would be the computerized Brother HC1850 that sews a decent 850 stitches per minute. Currently $259.99 at Amazon, it offers much more than the Brother CS6000i for only around $50 more.
With 130 stitches in 170 modes, 8 one-step buttonholes and more, it's great for seamsters and quilters of all skill levels. It won't bore users and newbies can easily grow into it. I might buy a HC1850 as a portable backup for my fabulous heavy-duty Bernina. It weighs a ton, with or without its hard carrying case.
I didn't take home ec and only started sewing to make masks- now I'm really liking it. I was looking at Singer 4423 but thinking that 4452 might be a big jump for just a little extra money. No real preference except my mother had a singer. I ordered one at the beginning of the pandemic that seems like a toy now but does the job. Your video was very helpful.
The Singer Quantum does have a speed adjust! I have this machine and love it. I also have a kenmore and Brother and they all work well. The reason the Quantum has 600 stitches is because they count each letter of the alphabet both in English and I think all the Russian alphabet

The best beginner machine I one with a speed control adjustment on the machine The machines without it can get going fullbast in a millisecond . It nice when you can sew really slow

I got a Brother SM3701 for $90 on sale from Joann (I think it's typically no higher that $150) and I've had it for about a year and a half. It's still running good. I recommend it for beginners

Looking back in my year of sewing I wished I spent a little more to get the Juki exceed 300 instead of the 2 brother machines I bought. My Juki makes such beautiful stitches- no birds nest, or bobbin issues.

@@TheElf1234 I bought the Juki exceed series 300. It's a domestic sewing machine. It's the earliest model of the series. The 300 is the same as the 400 and 600 version but without the bells and whistles. It's also 400-600 dollars less.
Great vid. I also encourage students to stop by sewing machine dealers and look at their selections. You don't have to buy, but, they will show you how to work the machine. Most have lessons and upgrading options. If you have older eyes it is a good idea to learn to use the auto needle threader.

I have had the LX3817 and I've gone through 3 of them over the course of my 7 year sewing life. I did before getting my 3rd try a conouterized brother and it came broken in box not the computer it just wouldn't sew forward so I took it back and exchanged it for the one I had have. My mom's bringing me a old brother machine that was gifted to me in high school but has been packed up. We don't know if it works or if I'll be comfortable with it so I appreciate this video for my future sewing endeavors.

I would consider an automatic thread cutter also . Singer quantum has that feature. After I saw the automatic thread cutter it is a must must for me . Saves a lot of thread and time. No hassle of making sure the tail is long enough before stitching .
As a bozo in the space, this is incredibly valuable. Going with the ST371HD, it's basically a 3D printer for fabric.

15:21 from my understanding you don’t need more than 3-5 stitches . One stitch being a buttonhole (but you can fenaggle other stitches into one), one being straight, one being zig zag, and one being overlock or backstitch , it’s like you said most folk don’t use all the stitches. In fact I remember hearing so many people talking about how they really only use like 2 stitches on their machines even if they had 15k available. I think speed adjusting and foot height adjusting are incredibly important. Idk how important width adjusting is though.
