I really enjoy the front display being small. If I wanted a straight up display, I would just open up the phone. It makes sense that the display on the outside is mainly meant for notifications and quick actions. I don’t think it’s a design flaw, or a loss against competition. I think it’s largely intentional and I personally enjoy it:-)
FYI: Samsung has said that they have expirimented similar hinges to the competition but found that they are less durable and don't allow for water resistance.
I am not sure about less durable, as there is no proof in that, maybe the Samsung one was poorly done, but comparing Samsung foldable issues to other OEMs, then there are a lot more problems with the Fold (though they do sell more). So, do not believe the marketing from Samsung. It is more likely they hold the patents to this method and want to sell it to other OEMs. Sadly, for Samsung, zero interest as it is clearly the less futuristic hinge/crease. As for water resistance, I suspect that dust is far more likely to kill foldable’s than water ingress, as dust is around us, everywhere, but it is very easy to avoid water. So those excuses seem to be half-hearted by Samsung to defend what looks a flawed design. There is zero chance that in 1-2 years anyone will be using the Samsung hinge with that gap and noticeable crease!
That might be true but I would take the form factor in these models from oppo, xiaomi and Viva, even if I had to sacrifice water resistance. And honestly, I think the more likely scenario is that Samsung just wants to maximize profit by keeping manufacturing costs down and recycling the same design is the best way to do that for them. I guarantee you if xiaomi, vivo, oppo was being sold in US carrier stores they would do something about the crease in the front screen.
Thanks Mr Fisher. Ur the only one who highlighted the most important point that answered a lot: Samsung has NO clear competition in folding phone. No one is as big as Samsung now as to after sale services n support. Not to mention they check all the boxes with "good enough", n thats better than "great" in an area but "unacceptable" in others. Cheers.
No clear competition in the United States and North America. In Europe and Asia and china, it's actually getting smacked around a bit by xiaomi and vivo and oppo. Which have proper front screens that aren't so narrow, flagship camera setups that aren't compromised, and much better creases. We North Americans should remember that the rest of the world exists
@@michaelcorcoran8768 But those phones aren't water proof, hinges suck and might not last long, software is meh. For the same price, it would be stupid to not pick the Samsung

@GH0STST4RSCR34M Water resistant is what I meant. Still, those Chinese phones aren't even that. No IP rating at all. So once again, you're a fool if you pick any foldable over samsung given those specs
@GH0STST4RSCR34M nope, its not just a fancy tick it means they did additional testing to ensure it's water resistant. While no water resistant phones don't go through that process so if you accidentally dunk your phone in water then there is a 50% chance of breaking. I know a few people who accidentally dropped thier phone in the toilet or sink and their screen went black afterwards.
I am very excited for this phone. I have mine on preorder and am ready to go. This is my first foldable phone moving over from a galaxy S21 Ultra. My friends a giving me crap about a “downgrade,” but I am looking at it to help kind of disconnect easier from being face in screen all day every day.
Due to the crazy Samsung trade in (had some points from few purchases), my upgrade from Flip3 to 4, costed $80, free case, and Pro Buds2 for $36. Totally worth it.
The trade-in is insane, yeah. I got my Z Flip 3 refurbished (in practically open-box condition) for $600 and I can use that to get $900 off my Bespoke Flip 4 preorder. Honestly worth it if not just for getting a fresh warranty and whatnot
Unfortunately, Samsung had quietly gone and lowered the trade-in offers for the 128GB and 256GB Z Flip 3 models. Those are only $700 and $800 respectively. Only the Bespoke version offers the $900 trade-in value. Well, that or the S22 Ultra and Z Fold 3 also, but I digress.
Finally made the plunge into the fold today myself. Even though Samsung's trade-in credit for my old device was only $225, that was more than enough to take away the sting from paying full retail. Looking forward to present-day phone fun
Yeah, my provider wants to credit me $250 towards my Note20ultra/512gb for a "Free" Fold. Sure, it's a great deal. But turning in my $6-800 phone is absolutely Not Free (and lured me away from more pressing things)~
Great review just got my wife a z flip for her birthday and I'm sure she will love it. Still think this type of phone is amazing for normal everyday users, where for me it's more about the duo as I'm a big multi tasker rather than media. Looking forward to seeing what it's like hands on.
I think I'll hop on the Flip train next year if they finally give us a larger front screen. Would be *awesome* to basically use a 4:3 2.5"+ smartphone for texts, photos, weather, quick searches, etc. Basically what the Fold has but on a miniature screen if we wanted it. And not using it for a true AOD is dropping the ball. Wired DeX would be cool too...
The Razr 2022 has basically the same specs, faster screen, faster charging, and a larger front screen with a more durable hing design, have seen some many cracked screen on the flips cause samsung keeps insisting on using a flawed hinge design. Once its released world wide the Razr 2022 will be the best flip phone.
@@brooklynforge4591 Cracked screens happen because of the ultra thin glass. Meanwhile, my friend's Motorola Razr 5G is still working flawlessly with its PLASTIC foldable display. 😎👍
Great observations about the external display. Fortunately they can still fix that with software updates in the future. Keep up with the great work! Love all of your videos 👌🏻👍🏻
I think Samsung missed the mark for not including DeX despite the slight battery increase and inclusion of the flex mode touch pad. The S8 and Note 8 both ran on older hardware and smaller batteries yet it supports DeX. But then again only a small portion uses that feature (myself included).
For some reason I can only think of DeX as a niche enthusiast feature. I and many of my friends/family own Samsung phones, yet only I have heard about DeX. And I have never used it myself either. This is obviously an anecdote, but it would be nice to see data on how many people use that feature.
Yes, there was a poll on YT that suggested very few people care a jot about DeX and probably why Samsung is not going anywhere with it. I think the hype from YT influencers is just what Samsung asks them to talk about in their notes (NDA protected) or TH-camrs are the biggest demographic for DeX. Just buy a good tablet for a similar price and have far more and you are not stuck at a desk with a monitor.

Although this new flip 4 lacks some features but could probably be fixed in the future, i'm still convinced and excited on getting this phone. Great video as always.
It's a cool thing. If you have the opportunity to try one with a return policy I would recommend it. Once the novelty wears off it'll either fit your lifestyle or not. I had one for a week and decided to return it. My favorite thing was controlling music on the folded mini display at the gym. Wasn't a fan of trying to fit a case that I could use with magnetic plate. For anyone who buys one I'd suggest going into the battery settings and enabling "light" mode which helps with battery life. They say it slows the phone down but for everyday use I noticed nothing.
I traded my s21 in for $800 for it (best buy in concert with Samsung /also/ has some wild deals - I think they're trying really hard to gain marketshare in the US this year). Excited to have my first flip phone :)
Still wish this had DEX, but I loved the flip 3 and will be getting a flip 4. This is the only phone in as long as I can remember that has made it as my day to day for a whole year.

I'm literally watching this on my new Samsung Fold 4. Having traded the Z Flip3. This new phone is awesome!! Samsung should be praising your promotion of flip phones. I've bought these two because of your reviews. Now I have to go prepare my Hello Fresh meal 👋 😃
Minor nitpick - II didn't see a link to the Engadget review you referenced with the auto-focus issue. Other than that, I was happy to see you took samples of a) child on a swing - as a new-ish dad, I'm going to be taking a lot of photos and videos of my one year-old and she is moving after by the day - and b) samples in low light to get a better sense of what to expect when my first foldable arrives next week. Thanks for yet another great video!
The crease is there because Samsung's hinge style is the only one that allows their fold devices to be water resistant. I learned this watching TechTalk TV TH-cam channel and think its really important top quality content creators like you Michael know this and mention it. Samsung have been bashed about the crease by every top level content creator as well as us the tech geeks and yet nobody connected the dots and clocked on to the fact that Xiaomi, Oppo and Huawei between them all fail to offer any water resistance, but yet all share a similar 'tear drop' hinge system. Besides that, Awesome video as always, looking forward to the Fold video as well bro.
Recently actually got the Z-Flip4 through T-Mobile. I was gonna do a trade in with my S22+, but because it's a newer model, I didn't need to trade it in! The camera is pretty alright (I do prefer the S22+ due to it's more crisp details) and I do admit the fact it can work as it's own tripod and the way the algorithm helps "pop" out more color does give it a big plus. I'm still getting used it folding, but it does help in the grand scheme of things for someone wanting to lower down on texting 24/7.
@@ajayrathore8704 the problem with the s22 and the s22 plus is 8g1 runs really hot, it only has a 1080p screen, no expandable storage, and it was delisted from geekbench for excessive throttling and benchmark manipulation. @@0x1EGEN well if you also sign up for a carrier plan, that is. Plus if you go out to Samsung’s website and model like you’re going to purchase, it looks like the avail credit is “up to” $1000 (AT&T) and $900 (Verizon), but it still very much depends on what the trade-in device is, with the much older S devices getting only $200. Hello, fellow Michael. If you really want to test the battery life of a phone just play Pokemon Go on it haha. That things zaps my battery. Admittedly I do have an old S9. I'd also love to know if and for how long you use wireless headphones while playing music. When I'm at the gym that combo takes a decent chunk out of my phones battery life. I received my Flip 4 yesterday (Aug 19 - got 500$ for my old Note 10+). I am delighted with it. The battery life is above what I expected, with 6 hour screen on time with first use and over 7 hours screen on time today. The form factor is a treat. The crease is barely noticeable. The 22:9 ratio is kind of genius given the front hole punch camera; when you watch movies in full screen the phone has a black border that hides the camera, but rounds off the corners to make the viewing experience a perfect 21:9 ratio. The screen is silky smooth, the feel premium, the hinge satisfying, and the cover screen offers essential functionality. In short, this phone is exceeding all my expectations for the first 36 hours!
The only thing Flip 4 buyer's are curious about is Battery Life & ironically this the ONLY part every TH-cam is try to intentionally DELAY in Pre-Booking phase. Samsung has bought the Silence of Tech Tubers on Battery Life 😅😎.
I guess with the upcoming recession samsung are playing safe. Probably see a really good upgrade in 5+ years with better battery, bigger front screen with more features.
Watching this with an alcatel goflip 5. ThaThank you for always putting out such interesting videos. I just got a google account this year but i remember watching your videos on my dad's account almost since i can remember.
I await to see how the new Razr fairs as the crease on the older 2020 model wasn't as noticeable as on the Flip 3 and I didn't hear of any display covering lifting off in the fold section. Shame that they got rid of the typical Razr design language though because too many people complained about the chin (the same people whine about any kind of bezel being found on phones not Samsung or Apple). I'm interested in foldables now as I've found the ever increasing size of phones uncomfortable to carry even in my spacious tactical pants.
I also really liked the design of the Razr 5G, and I don't understand why Moto won't release the new one here. The Razr 5G has high resale value and seems to be in demand at eBay etc., so clearly there is a market for it.
Michael, i just notice thet the way you speaking on the video so far is so much more like i am watching robert Downey Jr's iron man speech, and that's Amazing👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Mr Mobile, as I commented on some other person's video, I don't mind incremental upgrades, I think they are useful. What pains is when you know something can be done better, and it's not, like that front screen.
Same, though I can see the rationale behind the Flip (also I've seen somewhere that Flip 3 has sold like 3x more units than Fold 3). While Fold is definitely for power users, who want to have the most out of their smartphones, Flip is more appealing to... girls. It's still a regular phone, but it has a fancy look and it folds into a small square, which is easier to fit in small pockets of female outfits. I got my sister Flip 3 for her birthday and after about 6 months of using it she told me about these points.

@@andyH_England It was also along with Ross young who said the same thing.
@@andyH_England And No they have MUCH less problems than other folding phones.
@@LaidBackDeveloper how could you possibly *know* that? Have you imported all of the competition and taken it through its paces?
@@michaelcorcoran8768 er...ac im from malaysia. There is no global version for any of Xiaomi, Oppo etc. Here u can still import it but once its broke, ur screwed.
There is so much aura around your reviews.
Always makes me smile. Keep it up Micheal.
That is insane trade in value! Here in uk, for Flip 3 we only get £490 about 580 US dollar and free one year Disney+ subscription.
I was sad too
Mr Mobile and Flossy Carter are my 2 favorite cell phone and accessory reviewers.
Waiting for your Watch 5 review man. Not much into foldables myself. But I'll watch this one nevertheless. 🤗
Yes! Same for me
You must be into China phones

"a larger front screen"
Screen size and aspect ratio are two completely different things. Don't confuse them.
Exactly, its software not hardware so Samsung will probably bring some of those things!
I like this guy. He seems like a genuinely good guy
Man give this channel the views it deserves. His reviews are really different
I think Samsung missed the mark for not including DeX despite the slight battery increase and inclusion of the flex mode touch pad. The S8 and Note 8 both ran on older hardware and smaller batteries yet it supports DeX.
But then again only a small portion uses that feature (myself included).
I have a note 20 ultra and I only used Dex like 3 times. 🤦♂️
To be fair, the s8 and note 8 required the dock to use dex
Its the thoughtful music in the background that always reminds me of the time and effort put into these videos. Always appropriate for the theme or subject that Mr.Mobile is focused on.
OMG KITTY! I've been looking forward to your reviews on this (and any other foldable). I know how much you love them, haha.
That was a wonderful review, Micheal. Really appreciate the sort of work you put in. Hoping to view the Fold 4 review soon..! Cheers!
Everytime a new samsung phone comes out, i always come to your channel and watch the reviews. Me, i lean more on samsung phones than any other phone.
It's possibly still getting dex right?
7:39 Wait what? That's amazing.
My S22U can't even last till 2PM under heavy camera and TH-cam usage.
Upgraded to flip 4 love it for what I do. Cover screen nice but not that serious. Love the phone. No issues with 3 now enjoying the 4.
Double audio at the start of the video about 0.48 seconds? As always my favorite TH-camr back at it again! Thank you for the amazing content
2:15 That's the part that convinced me that Mr Fisher is the King of cool. Besides, being the King of reviews (along with Mr Cogen) and clear pronunciation for at least 10 years.
Great video. Was waiting for this one. Have both three z flip and z fold 4. Will returning one so I am waiting on your fold review before doing that. Can you please share the wallpaper. I have been watching your content forever and just realized I was not subscribe to the best reviewer on TH-cam lol
Im mostly excited about the new chips and the next ones. The efficiency seems to be much better
I'm literally watching this on my new Samsung Fold 4. Having traded the Z Flip3. This new phone is awesome!! Samsung should be praising your promotion of flip phones. I've bought these two because of your reviews. Now I have to go prepare my Hello Fresh meal 👋 😃
Trade-in options in USA are like insane. In my country they're not, more like an insult.
You're awesome that's all I can say. Getting this review out so soon brings a ton of value. I wish their was a love button on this video
you ate right in so many things, like the lack of competition, the high price in other markets and more.
liked sad always
Honestly I'm planning on buying the flip and the only review without any baised or bs...ty for the honest review and so I'm subscribing
Watching this from my flip 4. Great review
I've been really displeased with the S22+, hoping the bargain swap to the flip4 will be fun and useful~
I was thinking of buying the s22 what's up
@@ajayrathore8704 the problem with the s22 and the s22 plus is 8g1 runs really hot, it only has a 1080p screen, no expandable storage, and it was delisted from geekbench for excessive throttling and benchmark manipulation.
You're probably better off with a note 20 ultra or an s20 Fe or something if you want to stick with Samsung.

My s22 ultra doesn't run hot at all. Very fast, no lag or anything. Battery is good. So far so good 👍
@@ajayrathore8704 Don’t buy the base S22! It’s horrible - it overheats, has crappy battery life.

Honestly - 12hrs of heavy usage and max brightness, throughout the day, that’s pretty good. I use an iPhone 12 - max brightness sporadic usage / wi-fi at work / social media … and i have to charge before leaving at 5pm
Couldn't help but creep-out on your Project Repat email! I converted most of my old ThinkGeek tshirts into a SPECTACULAR Project Repat quilt. I love it more than I loved the original shirts.
Great review! Unfortunately, the trade in value of the Flip 3 (at least for lower storage model) has dropped to $700 in the last couple of days.
🤣
That's still an amazing value. On the market a Zflip 3 is only worth around $400...
Depending on what carrier you have, Samsung also still has the "any year any condition" deal going on. So technically every single galaxy s & z phones are valued at $800 minimum. I recently traded in my dad's broken galaxy s3 from years ago for an S22!
Same for an unlocked purchase.
@@danamoss5705 You could also buy an older used phone on eBay for a much cheaper price and then trade it in to Samsung for their high credit.
Earlier this year Samsung offered like $600 or $700 I think for the standard Galaxy Note 10 (and also the Plus). My friend bought one from eBay for around $400 and then traded it in to Samsung. 👍
That flip 3 trade in deal was one heck of a steal. That's how I got my flip 4!
This'll be my first flip phone - with trading in my S20 FE and promo offers I got the Flip 4, the Buds, and the Watch for around 700, which to me is just crazy.
Bit bummed about the outer screen, I'll need to get used to that - the camera and battery stuff I'm glad is improved! It seems like this is a very iterative update, which is great for me since I'm jumping in first here. Glad that the review is up so early pre-release so I can temper my expectations~
I’m still using my s20 fe 5g and i cant bring myself to buy the flip since it would give me anxiety.
@@hman6159 how's the s20 Fe battery life?
I think Microsoft Remote Desktop might be a good candidate for the flex mode. The flex mode gives a more PC-native way to control your remote computer. My workflow heavily depends on remote desktop, so I think it's pretty useful for me.
Your extremely thorough and honest. I’ve never seen your videos before but I’ll be sure to subscribe you do a great job.
I just wish they would have a small snap feature like the Nintendo DS so you can watch videos almost fully open. Would also make it great for emulation of old games to play like a game boy and such.
I'm happy to see how here in Italy, almost since it first released till now, the Flip 3 costs 650 USD. Hey, if you want that cool new form factor you can get it for less than an iPhone 12 mini!

Look forward to seeing you in a starfleet uniform playing poker as an end credit scene in a video,
Sadly the uk trade in prices are not that generous,
I still believe that samsung next year will have a bigger cover screen much like the moto razor, Simply because 3nm soc chips will be available next year, That should help with making the bigger screen last longer in the battery department,
You're my new favorite tech reviewer! I love the personality in your tech reviews. You're like a classy Lazy Game Reviews (if you've heard of him) that reviews modern tech instead of games.
WHY WOULD YOU NOT HOLD THE PHONE LIKE A CAMCORDER THAT'S AMAZING.

Again, I know my phones old. But I'd like to get an idea on what an improvment a new phone would be.
Love the videos, btw. I agree with you about flip phones needing to come back into the mainstream.

Waiting for Samsung to bring back the SD card slot before purchasing a foldable. If you don't need it then don't use it, but if you want one it's nice to have the extra storage for music, photos and video.
now that I have a Samsung z flip I will be using the main screen less and less as now that I can check notification's from the front cover screen rather than keep unfolding the phone or having to tap the screen on my iPhone
Can't wait for your Watch 5 Pro and Fold4 reviews.
Trading in the S22 Ultra for Fold 4 and picking up the Watch and Earbuds I got a total over $1700 in discounts and trade ins. $1K of that was the trade in alone for the phone. The discounts are INSANE for preordering. I don't miss paying full price for iPhones every year LOL

The trade-in offer made the flip 4 like $100. I almost considered the fold, but maybe next year.
Can't wait for the flip 4 to get here!
I was waiting in anticipation for your review since there is no major differences between 3 and 4
My telco in my country offering this at less than USD1 right now. Gonna buy it shortly.
It is such a cute phone. Still holding on to my note 20 ultra. But I like the foldable concepts.
The only thing stopping me from trading my fold 2 for a fold 4 or flip 4 is the UK deals being awful compared to the USA
I just purchased flip 4 recently. Hope I can have some playful with it. Thanks for your review.
Thank you for your hard work, Michael. Your videos are always so pleasing to watch.
A bit late but I have to say it...
I just love your reviews!
The best tech storyteller!
Idk if it's just me but the fold concept is much more appealing than the flip
I'm probably with you on that too, as cool as the flip is, you can do SO much more with the fold in comparison
The ending voiceover says it's a galaxy flip 3 review sample......it should say flip 4
Whoops. Haha - thanks!
