  • The wodaabe people have one of the most bizarre and unusual practices in the world. This practice allows a man to steal another man’s wife or girlfriend. This wodaabe festival also known as guérewol festival permits a woman to choose for herself a man among the tribesmen even if she is already married.

    Matriarchal cultures are vastly understood. Stealing a wife is the point, but rather being chosen. Just as in patriarchal societies, where women preen for a man's attention, the Woodabe males seek the validation of a woman's choice of him as a suitable mate.

    This videos speaks about the tribe in a patriarchal way - men don't make the decisions, it's women who make the decisions. It's not about a man stealing another man's wife because there is no possession. It's about a woman choosing another man to be her husband. Men are not allowed to "not allow" women to be part of this ceremony because it's a Matriarchal tribe, men don't make the decisions.

Maybe child raring is purely the domain of the mother, especially because when a woman is pregnant she returns to her mother's home for a few years so the father is "unburdened". Plus maybe being able to claim more children might be advantageous because that's more hands to help w growing/finding food? Dunno, but it's interesting to speculate. Don't you have different laws with regards to different religions? For marriage?

    • @FujishimaAkiko
      @FujishimaAkiko ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dOVERanalyst No, marriage is standard here, no matter the religious ceremony involved when two people are married it's a legal contract, though some people here treat it more like a bill of sale, it's why so many women are opting not to get married at all. But, religion doesn't matter. Also, less and less people are getting married these days, and there are also polyamorous people here in the US, in fact it's one aspect of the Mormon religion, even though not all Mormons practice polygamy. It's not legal here in the sense, you can't legally marry more than one person, but the government doesn't step in when it comes to polyamorous people who are existing within the law, so as long as there is no acts of bigamy the law isn't involved.
      Some states in the US may have slightly different rules, like in some states you're required to get a blood test to prove you don't have any STDs or STIs, and/or that you're not related to each other. But marriage laws do not involve religion, as there are so many different religions here, as well as people who have no religion. A standard Justice of the Peace won't even mention any sort of religion or religious ideology in the vows in many, many states.

    • @dOVERanalyst
      @dOVERanalyst ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Akiko Fujishima No, I meant it in a different context.
      For example, in the most diverse country in the world, India,
      There are all religions.
      So, marriage is judged by those laws.
      For example, the Hindu Marriage Act applies to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists as all are Hindus legally in India.
      Muslims want 4 wives & although legally, it's forbidden to marry more than once, you can't enforce it on them.
      So, they are allowed to have their own marriage laws.
      Society did step in & banned Islamic triple talalkh recently that used to allow men to just say divorce thrice & get rid of a wife with no consequences.
      As we give religious freedom, marriage is a thing governed by religious communities' marriage Acts.
      It's different for different religions.

Often, the West with it's Agency feel it is within their advantage to define is as a homogeneous group in the continent. Unfortunately, some people from the continent in an effort to satisfy one interest or the other subscribe to the "African" framing without critically understanding the net effect.just like any group in any continent, people in Africa are different with different cultures, different values system and different norms. We are a tribe in the Fulani ethnic! Everything is based on the education. We focus on “ndimaagu, neɗɗaagu, teddungal and pulaagu": Being generous, being a human, being yourself and being opened to the rest of humankind “. We are all over Africa, and mostly herders or originally raising animals even some Fulanies are actually doing others activities. Some of us have a black skin, others yellow, other white... We are still looking to see where we really come from. Some research says that we are Indians, others that we are from Middle East that we went to Africa since Moise. Our people that are Really proud of their living. Some of us who went to school or travelled a lot wish some changes.
    Our situation puts us in some difficulties: jealousy from the neighbors which turns into even genocide on us. We are so peaceful and looking to everyone as a brother and a sister. But it’s sad that Fulani community is actually being targeted and killed in Mali, Mauritania, niger, Nigeria, burkina fasso, Soudan , central Africa , and mostly everywhere in the continent.

      @Sow Samba Correct me if I am wrong. You said you are herders ? From what I was told by a Nigerian, the herders and the people of that region always have conflict. The herders think it is their right to move along the region to feed their cattle. This has been done for centuries. But with the formation of nation states and borders, that is where conflicts arise. The people in the nation states that are sedentary(no longer herders and become settled farmers, small business) will always have issues with herders coming from afar to graze and water. This ends in violence. Serious violence.

      My English is not fluent! I’m still learning!
      Misunderstanding always happens. I believe that’s the reason why we end up having a government and it’s institutions. The issues have been the almost the same since. The only difference is, in our days, there are a lots of interest coming from every and nowhere until it’s hard to control thos interest. Today, one State can just influence another just for its personal seeking.
      Herders and farmers are all over the world. Sometimes, like myself, herders are also at the same time, farmers. Conflicts between them are normal. They share the same areas. Where the crops can grow, where the animals can live and multiply. The misunderstanding between them has always found solution, because they are Neigbors and cousins. If that misunderstanding can’t be solved traditionally , we should take it to the judicial institution. In my country, there’s no issues between herders and farmers because there are law to protect each and every citizens and their activities.
      Countries develop mainly with those activities. So every nation should build its rules to make peace, even we understand some nations develop themselves during war in others nations. But, there’s no more great than PEACE!
      The herders can not live with milk and meat. The farmers also need the herders. Some accusations have just no sense. Some nations like USA... should be a reference to the small countries.

      @@peterscotland1507 The main problem of Nigeria today is the one that preoccupies everyone; Terrorism; religion issues. Every other issue can be solved by the neighbors or the government.
      Because of the poverty, terrorists are hiring young people and using them to bring confusion and civil conflicts.
      There’s no reason for civilians to fight.
      People who have been together since no one remembers should always find a way to live in peace. Actually Africa is living a new colonisation; a colonisation that is using the name of Islam, but that has nothing to do with religion. That colonisation is bringing confusion and conflicts . It’s not everything we can say. Africans who already understand that are putting hands together as brothers and sisters across nations to fight those who come to take over everywhere : A lots of countries have already been taken. Actually Mali is about to be divided, those invaders mostly people who lives in the forest who don’t understand the issue. They use every misunderstanding between Africans to create a war.
      But some brothers should ask themselves questions before they act bad. It’s better to stand together to fight every injustice.
