There were/are lions in India and they spread in iconography all over Asia, including Japan. I mean there likely weren't lions in the Netherlands either and they still knew about them. Don't underestimate historical people.

I thought you would actually conquer your way to Japan, this is pretty much the same as forming Japan as usual, just a different country/tag. Could you explain why you did it this way?
Playing in Japan as a dutch nation is apt, as for centuries the dutch were the only westerners allowed to trade with Japan (tho they were based in Nagasaki, not where you started) As for Genoa, embrace your Crimean holdings and take over the steppe

You could have made it more exciting if you started at a later start date (dip tech 7?), then went colonial for the range enough to get into Taiwan, then maritime/naval to pirate Ming for schmoney to fund your annexation of Japan little by little. If you form Japan as a Christian, there’s an achievement I think. A reformed or catholic Japan would be funny
Genoa is located between the regions of Piemonte and Sardegna, so you should form the superior Merchant Republic of Toothpaste and own 50%+ of the trade nodes of Genoa, Venice and English Channel
You should create two stacks of transports and put cannons in the second one. Land the marines first to occupy the pot and dock the ship with your cannons….I think it’s fun. Or use marines to force docked enemy ships out of port into combat with your ships
shogunate is the most OP gov in this game, infonite vassal swarm FTW. Forming Japan is kinda like forming HRE via imperial reforms - you can only loose stats
My last shogunate run i had like a siege stack or two in each expansion region, this way you do the heavy lifting and ai siege non-fort provinces. It was pretty fun with influ ideas and its vassal forcelimit

Also marines are great. Split them into single regiments and you can capture a massive coast line all at the same time. The AI sucks at naval warfare kek
When you talk about naval / maritime ideas and blockading Ming... For some reason all I can think about is having to manually embargo every single person you rivaled. I think because I associate those ideas with Trade Dispute wars.
This may require more serious console usage, but how about instead if bringing a country to a region, bring a region to a country? Consider this for your next challenge in Australia - what if HRE/ Shogunate/Celestial Empira was brought to Australia? With all the important countries brought along as OPMs.

All your games revolves around conquests. I do like that a lot, actually! But, as Genoa, why not trying to become the richest country in the world, since they are a merchant republic. Play an ultra tall game with only few tactical expansions. Definitely a different approach.

Gelre was actually my first ever campaign, great way to learn EU4. You get to beat Burgundy early, not bad at all.
