Contributions will go towards the repairs, restoration, and documentation of Argonaut's rich history, along with the preservation of traditional boat building and maritime heritage through video creation.
This video is about repairing a worn out throwout bearing from my power takeoff (PTO) clutch on my engine, which drives a hydraulic pump to operate my windlass, the machinery on my bow used to haul up my anchor. As part of one of my errands to visit a machinist in Port Townsend, I join my friend Jimmy on a Saturday classic car cruise in his 1940 Chevy and got exposure to another slice of crazy people enthused by old machinery.
The PTO Clutch I believe is between 60-80 years old, and was installed off the shaft coming forward of the engine, and is barely on there. The shaft does not go through the entire bearing, making it susceptible to wear, which is what happened in this case. I weighed the choice of replacing the part, or fixing the old one and ultimately could not find an exact replacement, which lead me to opt for the repair.
The PTO clutch is important as it drives the hydraulic pump which pressurizes hydraulic fluid up to the windlass on my bow, which has a hydraulic motor to turn the capstan that weighs the anchor.
Thanks and see you next time.

That’s not the only thing you’re gonna need to bore out to accommodate your shaft

You said you hope this repair lasts through the summer, but that seems like a sturdy repair. Is the concern the brazing will wear out?

Yes, that and the shaft it is mounted on is a bit short and only about 1/3 of the bearing is on the shaft when it is disengaged (maybe 2/3 when engaged), which is what led to the problem in the first place. Since this video, I had some friends help me make some adjustments to the assembly and it’s working much smoother now, so I am less concerned.
