When you mentioned spice in books that really resonated with me. I don’t mind if there’s a little that I can skip and not miss any depth of the relationship. That’s why I love Emily Henry so much. She has spice but the characters and relationships are so well developed that I can skim or skip through it and still feel a deep connection between the characters. I started reading Part of Your World this month after hearing so many good reviews but then I had to DNF because the first 40% felt too much like hookup culture to me that I just couldn’t stand it. More and more romance novels have sex being the main attraction between the love interests.
this is why I only read slow burn. I can't get into sex scenes and feel the emotion unless the characters build their relationship first. its much more satisfying to read the steamy scene with all the nice buildup

It’s kinda nice to see a big influencer with an aversion to spice. Sometimes I feel so alone when I don’t enjoy popular spicy romances and so it’s refreshing to hear you talk about it. Especially how you mentioned that the connection shouldn’t rely solely on those scenes. Sometimes I feel like some mainstream romances are just mediocre plot to get to the sex scenes and those scenes don’t feel sentimental and intimate, they feel borderline creepy sometimes and often feel like they came out of left field. (Tessa Bailey and Ali Hazelwood I’m looking at you….)

Seriously you’d be (or maybe not) surprised at how much people dislike that I dislike smut lol. People think it’s prudish, and I’m not a prude I just don’t enjoy watching or reading pornography 🤷🏻♀️. I loved Sarah j mass books but had to fast forward way too much on the last one. And if I ever buy the physical copies, I will take a sharpie and redact so I can enjoy them lol.

I kinda agree with spice scenes sometimes, usually I don’t mind them but I need the characters to grovel for like a million pages before anything happens then it just doesn’t seem genuine and feels forced🤷🏼♀️

I also loooove Lynn painters writing too. I have the same thoughts with her adult books; I find her YA so much more captivating. I think it is because her MC in her adult are always a “hot mess express” rock bottom kind of woman, and her YA main characters are typically more put together and trying to be perfect, which I personally relate to more. But same, she’s def an autobuy author for me!!!

haley. i absolutely recommend “when in rome” and “practice makes perfect” from sarah adams. you already own both of them but haven’t read them, they’re closed door romances and the characters have a lot more depth. the writing is way more eloquent and has improved a ton. please read them.

I totally get what you mean about sometimes thrillers just make you feel not good. And it’s so weird because sometimes the subject matter isn’t necessarily the reason! It’s hard to predict ahead of time which will feel that way!

i agree about Emily Henry!! i just finished Happy Place and i've seen some negative reviews and i'm so surprised, this one was so much more well done, i thought the characters were so much more in depth and how the communication opens at the end! i loved it
I felt that same way reading that Lisa Jewell book but, don’t give up! Just read “The Night She Disappeared” and the vibes were SO much better.

Hey Haley, I really love watching you’re videos and all of the book recommendations you give! My favorite author of all time is Tessa Afshar. She writes historical fiction (but makes it really interesting) about people in the Bible. On of my absolute favorite books of all time is In the Field of Grace, is about Ruth in the Bible and it is such a wholesome, amazing Christian romance. I really recommend any of her books, and I think you would love them. 😊

im the opposite durign summer! I get so busy and im overwhelemed and cant read. but i also live in a state wheere summer indicates that there will be sunshine. The rest of the seasons hold no promises. i read 14 books the first 3 months but every month since ive been shaving off a book. ive only read 3 so far in may LOL. perhaps this is the nature of my job too.

Hey Haley can you read YA books that was famous in early 2000s which I feel is when the YA genre had its moments? I would love for you to read my favorite book, fault in our stars and any John green book. And I suggest to listen to it on audio book
I felt the extact same way after reading Then She Was Gone. I really enjoyed the book and I thought the plot and the characters were good and well developed. But I could not shake this feeling of darkness after I read it. Like it felt like such a sinking feel even though the book ended with a somewhat happy ending or as happy of ending as it could have been. It just felt too sad afterwards. And like you said that makes sense because the topics are sad but I have never felt this way after reading any other thriller book like Then She Was Gone. I'm glad I'm not alone with this feeling.

By your story the book "Then she was gone" sounds siimilar to a book called "Dear Child" by Romy Hausmann. I'll definetly check that one for sure. Thanks for existing and giving us all these great recommendations
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires gave me the same feeling that Then She Was Gone gave you! An amazing book, but I felt so weird after reading it. I was so freaked out and just felt this pit in my stomach. A good author is one that can evoke emotions though so I loved it!

with 'then she was gone' by lisa jewell, i felt the same way as you did. i just felt really weird and dark and sad after and it sucked because i appreciated the book so much!! it just made me feel bad after reading it so all of the good things about it (plot, writing, etc..) were erased from my mind.

8:03 also same! Sometimes I feel bad for rating a book low because of the spice (especially if it got popular because of the spice) but some of my favorite romance novels have spicy scenes, the story just doesn’t depend on it to be good
