Unpopular opinion about “all romance books are the same”, if you read enough of any genre of any media, (video games movies tv etc) they will all seem the “same”. If you read 300 fantasy books you will see the same pattern over and over, same with horror, romance, literary etc. one of the reasons I’m so easily entertained by any mystery book I read is because I barely ever read them so every oneI pick up seems new and interesting.

That's so true. I watch a lot of tv shows and movies (or romance books for that matter) and i always can tell what will happen in those movies and tv shows because theres always the same pattern when you watch closely. I watch all types of tv, and i got good in knowing what will happen, which is unfortunate because nothing is new to me. But my friends are always surprised by the way i can tell them what will happen.

I don’t read romance much, but for me they do seem more the same than other genres because as far as I’ve heard (and people can correct me if I’m wrong), they HAVE to eventually end up together in the end or it’s not really a romance, it’s a tragedy. And most of them seem to follow the same plot structure of meet cute > get together > get torn apart/argument > get back together. To me, that’s so boring and limiting to know the ending and maybe even the entire plot from the start like that every single time. I’m mostly a horror reader, and in those books, while many do have similar themes and tropes, the endings and plot can be practically anything. There are horror books where everyone dies, there are others where they defeat the monster and live happily, and there are countless others with an ending somewhere between there. And you don’t always know which one it will be until you get to it. Often the endings are a bit unsettling, and I personally generally tend to prefer that kind of ending to a happily ever after. From what I’ve heard from people talking about romance, you just don’t get that variety in romance. They always just end up hooking up and the story is just about HOW they hooked up. Personally, I just don’t find that interesting.

    • @leonecarter9882
      @leonecarter9882 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@bluecannibaleyes I think you saying you don’t read romance much is exactly why you have this take. You go on to explain tons of different horror books, I could sit here and type the same for romance or fantasy or historical fiction. Sure usually they end up together but yeah that’s the point lol (and not always true) it’s romance, just how horror is meant to spook or unsettle you. It would be weird to complain that “all horror books are scary!” Think of stories in general, if you break them down most are written in the same plot formation that we are all taught in school. I think it’s only more enhanced with romance because romance is WAYYYYY more popular so of course it’s way more saturated.
Romance books also aren’t just rom coms.. and rom coms are meant to be stereotypical. I find that a lot of people who say this don’t seem to get that? there are tons of romance books that have plenty of other themes and background things happening, but if the main plot is romance than it’s still a romance. The “get back together torn apart argue get back together” thing (which in ALOT of cases is not true lol) I could make one up about about fantasy and adventure too, ever heard of the hero’s journey? The plot structure that almost every book is inspired by?? The one we learned in school and would compare random movies and shows too? 😂 it’s all connected. your cup of tea is your cup of tea
And yes it’s easier to be more unique and ahve new ideas with fantasy or supernatural horror plots. as someone who has consumed a lot of various genres you will start to see patterns everywhere. I don’t read a lot of horror books but I watch tons of horror,. I predict whats gonna happen in them, when a jumpscare is going to come, the twists etc ALL. THE. TIME.

11:14 I think the reason a lot of books are overhyped is the way the younger generation express their emotions is obsessive a lot of the time. I don’t mean that in a harsh way, but think about it. If it’s on trend they’re obsessed with it - Stanley cups, Ugg boot shoe things, etc. They have to have it or else they feel left out. Listening is not reading. It’s really as simple as that. They are two different things and two different skills.
There’s no shame in saying that you LISTENED to an audiobook. It strikes me as really insecure that people can’t just own that and instead need to make it part of the ‘reading’ club. Reading does not equal intelligence anyway, so there’s no need for people to redefine words like that just to make them feel smarter or better about themselves. It’s just them being insecure about not actually reading, which is silly.

i dont think tropes are slowly ruining books. i think its more ruining people's way of recommending books to others, just because they[others] gave a book with that sort of trope a 4/5 star. especially since alot of the time people will recommend a enemies to lovers, but that only be a subplot.. or maybe be too big of a plot for a certain person. As Destiny mentioned (and im adding to), some people are minimising certain books to a particular trope in hopes to get a wider reach

what annoys me the most about love triangles is that theyre not actually triangles.. its always a girl with a choice of two guys that want nothing to do with each other or hate each other (and the final choice is usually obvious). if it was an actual love triangle where everyone liked everyone now that would actually be interesting. like give me the drama where all three like each other in all possible combinations and you actually don't know how it could end because it could go either way. what an interesting chaotic mess that would be.

But if I'm in the horror section, I don't want a trigger warning list. This isn’t an attack on you or any specific person, but I personally don’t like when people say that an author is continuing a series or writing a spin off purely as a “cash grab”.
Like you mentioned, this has been said about Jennifer Lynn Barnes a lot recently. But Jennifer Lynn Barnes wrote 20 books before the Inheritance Games. I personally really enjoyed the Inheritance Games, so after reading it I started reading her backlist. I’ve read 9 books and 1 novella that she published before the Inheritance Games, and I really really enjoyed (and in some cases loved) every single one of them. So I’ve never understood why she was never popular or a best seller before the Inheritance Games. The Naturals series was her most popular books before hand, but even that never came close to any best seller lists, even though a lot of people now prefer and love The Naturals series. And so maybe it’s not a cash grab at all, but more of a “fame grab”, but not necessarily in a bad way.
And I think that she also genuinely loves writing these books. She’s said in several interviews that she had been wanting to write her “puzzle house” book for several years, but she never had a good enough idea to go with it. She got her idea for a puzzle house book because her dad, after retirement, decided to design (and maybe build? I can’t remember) his families dream house. And one thing that he did while designing it was he asked his daughter if she had any request, and Jennifer requested a secret passage. When that home was built, with the secret passage, she felt her dad in every part of the home. And she began playing the what-if? game and it turned into a mansion with so many puzzles and games built into it owned by an eccentric billionaire. But it took her years to find a good enough plot to go with it for her publisher to go for it. And so she had so much time to fall in love and generate potential puzzles and ideas, so now that she’s finally able to write those ideas, maybe she just doesn’t want to stop and genuinely enjoys it. I’m sure the money is definitely a benefit, but I doubt that it’s the main reason.
Also, I believe that she’s said that the Inheritance Games series is the first book that she ever utilized her expertise in the psychology of fiction to write. Other than the puzzle house idea, Avery’s story and relationship with all of the Hawthorne’s is based on the psychology of fiction theory called the Gossip Theory. And so I’m sure she likely loved utilizing both her psychologist brain and her writing brain.

I don’t mind a love triangle, but usually in a series. If it’s a stand alone romance book, I’m not as happy about it. But a fantasy series with a good back and forth? Let me pick a side and have some fun lol. I do feel like most of those are obvious about who will be picked, though. Like, I’m sorry to the Gale stans, The Hunger Games is not going to have the majority of the book focused on one guy and then let her get with the less featured one. Same with Twilight, although that hurts my childhood Team Jacob soul. I always said Team Jacob because I would’ve chosen him, but that Edward was right for her. And that was a movie opinion. The books were so obvious I don’t really think it could even constitute as a true love triangle. He could’ve been a consideration of a consolation prize at most.

    For the audio vs reading.
For me it is absolutely not about superiority.
I think there is a difference, because you experience the book differently. This is not something bad. Some books do great on audio and not so much on paper and vice versa.
However, I see booktubers listen to a book while doing other things (which is totally fine), but, would the book have been just as enjoyable if you only focused on the book?
That is the main reason I would like to know whether it was read or listened to, the difference in experience.
We can still talk about the book because we "read" the same thing, but our experience of the story might be different because of the different ways of consuming the content.

Because I was so busy with college and my first year teaching at the time, I had to soft DNF a book I was really enjoying. I was about halfway through. I’m the kind of person where I have to reread things from the beginning if it’s been longer than a couple of weeks. I have the hardest time rereading the first two chapters of Book Lovers after the prologue, even though I enjoyed them well enough the first time around. I’m just waiting on Charlie to appear 😂 I can see both sides to wanting to put a book down if the first few pages don’t hold my attention though. I’m usually interested from the beginning of a book, so if I’m not, there may be something wrong. It depends on how interested I am in the summary if I’ll stick with it.

Buuuuut I think they are awesome because what you said is very valid and never thought of it that way lol, there are alot of people out there who are blind or trouble with sight, dyslexic or can't even read, so for them too enjoy a book that most people can read without being left out

I'm one of those people who doesn't care about the perspective of the book. Ik that some people feel like 3rd person isn't as immersive or it's just not as personal, but I highly disagree bc when you're reading a book in third person, you're reading about feelings and thoughts that even the characters themselves don't realize they're having, and there's something so deeply personal and connective about that to me.

11:00 This whole discourse about booktok books being trash has a big hole in it. That being...."A BOOK BEING BAD IS SUBJECTIVE!" And besides from that I also feel like we should just let people enjoy what they want. The Hunger Games was a booktok book at some point but that doesn't mean it's trash. It also ties into the whole "just because you don't like it, doesn't mean its bad thing." People can avoid said "booktok books" and have complete control over what they read but STILL proceed to hate on other people for their choice of books?? Like what?? Please let people enjoy themselves. And there's a whole moral high ground thing to it too. If you like "good" books vs "booktok" books you're somehow smarter and better than everyone else, therefore you should put others down? Yeah, no. I read classics like Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell, but let me enjoy modern romcoms Ali Hazelwood and Talia Hibbert too.
Even in the fantasy community there's some moral superiority with people who read Tolkien believing they are better than everyone else that reads authors like SJM. It's so annoying. And all this is coming from someone who doesn't even look to tiktok for book recs. I don't like the few books I've been recommended from there, but that doesn't mean im gonna make fun of people who do! People need to grow up! And they say reading makes people more empathetic...

If anyone brings up the audiobook debate, I make sure to point out that not everyone can physically read a book for a vast variety of reasons. That’s such a rude stance to take regardless, but it’s also ableist. When I was a child, physically reading gave me the WORST migraines. My dad read all my school books to me until middle school, or I listened to audiobooks. I had eye issues too, but hated wearing my glasses. So many problems popping up that prevented me from physically reading, and so many people with negative opinions about the way I took in that content for school, because obviously if my dad was reading the book (out loud) that meant he did my homework? Never happened. I’m so glad I can read physical books now, but I still love my audiobooks, and I love how inclusive it is for people with disabilities and people who are too busy for whatever reason to sit down for hours on end and read. ❤

15:15 and 16:59 - THIS! that's why i dont think every book needs a media adaptation.. it ruins imagination and most of the time completely ignores the book itself like the message and plotlines within. while im happy the author has the success, i think they should sometimes leave it alone.
Audiobooks do count as reading, it has the word 'BOOK' in the name and also as someone who struggles to focus sometimes, it's helpful especially with pronounciations and actually consuming the book even if it's in another format.
also i think it's okay to have an negative opinion about a book but when the author themselves encourages their fans to go attack that person for having it (even if they weren't tagged in said review) then it's not okay.
