Some spooky cozy animated classics for you: Corpse Bride The Nightmare Before Xmas Over the Garden Wall Frankenweenie The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Disney animated short film
If you want to watch something cozy and subtly spooky, I would recommend Over the Garden Wall. It’s one of my favorite animated shows and is perfect for the fall season.

i second you watching Over the Garden Wall, but you might also like Sleepy Hollow and for sure Pan's Labyrinth. If you'd like to venture into some movies that arent cozy but also aren't really that scary and are more artistic I'd say The Witch, Susperia (the original and the remake, bonus points for the setting being a ballet academy), The Lighthouse, El Ophanato, Midsommar, May, and Let the Right One In.
15:38 there is this animated movie from 2009 called '9'. it is sci-fi fantasy spooky and it never left my mind since i watched it as a kid ! mayde not the most critically acclaimed movie but i love it sm highly recommend ❤ also great vid
Ever since reading Interview With the Vampire on your recommendation, I've been on the Vampire Chronicles series reading spree. Now, six books deep, I can wholeheartedly say that The Vampire Lestat is the best in the series. And I have a sneaking suspicion that no other book will make me feel so invested in these vampires or question my own sense of temporality, morality, and purpose as deeply. The prose is at its peak, and the way this book explodes with its exploration of purpose, religion, and the nature of good and evil is haunting, mesmerizing, and life-altering. While I agree that the series declines, it doesn’t happen until The Vampire Lestat goes out with a bang. Thank you, Emma, for introducing me to the series that has changed me forever. I’m so excited for you to experience this one; it’s truly a gem!
As far as films go, I would recommend The Innocents(1961) directed by Jack Clayton and based on the Henry James novel The Turning Of The Screw. Subtle creepy vibes, leaves a lot to the imagination, the black and white cinematography is stunning and the performances are incredible(one of the best child performances IMO as well).
The Innocents is an excellent movie. The first time I watched I had chills up and down my spine. Turn of the Screw is one of my favorite Henry James and it is a great read anytime but a really good selection for October.
Thanks for keeping the October vibes going strong, Emma! 👻 I've got Rosemary's Baby, Dracula, The Spellshop, The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic, and more on my list! Emma you need to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it has all the feels I know you'll love! I’ve been watching your videos for years now *obviously* LMAO so I’ve got to say, your October TBR video is amazing and never disappoints! 🎃🖤 I’m so excited about all the reads you’ve picked this month - they sound SO varied and fun! Even though our book choices for the month are a little different, it’s what makes spooky season even more thrilling. It’s always awesome to get fresh Halloweenie book recommendations from you! Can’t wait to dive into my own stack while watching along with your reading vlogs! 🕸📚
Also, I highly recommend an ancient and difficult to find Disney film called Mr. Boogedy. There's also a second film - Bride of Boogedy. So fun and silly and actually a bit scary.
I just finished book 6 in the Vampire Chronicles but I can give you a bit of an idea of how they go up until book 10. Books 4 and 5 follow Lestat in the "present day" and depart from the style of the previous two books. In 4 Lestat gets a "new body" and in 5 Lestat gets recruited by Satan. I didn't love 4 but I quite enjoyed 5. Books 6 and 8 are backstories of two other vampires, Armand and Marius (who you will meet in book 2). Books 7, 9, and 10 are tied into the Mayfair Witches series. There is some information imparted in The Vampire Lestat and more so in Queen of the Damn that also ties into the Mayfair Witches series but It isn't necessary to have read those books to understand what's going on, I don't know if that's the case of books 7,9,10. So far I've loved three books, really liked two, and found one to be mid. Her writing style does become slower and much more descriptive but I actually liked that. There's also a lot more religion being discussed but as someone who isn't religious i didn't find it egregious and it doesn't feel out of place, you can just tell that religion and faith were forefront on her mind as she was writing certain books. So in general, yes after book three there is a clear shift, but that by no means indicates that the other books are bad. Particularly if you're in it for the exploration of certain ideas and like the parts where the vampires have long and deep conversations discussing immortality, humanity, morality, time, loneliness, otherness, etc.
So excited to hear how you like The Vampire Lestat! I’m a huge Vampire Chronicles fan but it is true that the quality varies across the series. In terms of style, Interview with the Vampire is very different from the rest too. Personally, the books I enjoyed the most were The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned (3rd book), The Vampire Armand (6th book), Merrick (7th book) & Blood and Gold (8th book). Marius might be my favourite out of all the vampires… ancient but so kind, so benevolent.
I love Mina and the Undead and the author is lovely who is a BookTuber. Interestingly Mina is reading Interview with a vampire in the book which made me want to read it immediately after I finished Mina 2&3
The Vampire Lestat is in my opinion the best vampire chronicles book, and one of my favourite books of all time. The rest of the books after that are hit and miss for me but not to be dramatic, the vampire lestat changed me life
A highly underrated movie that doesn’t get talked about enough for the Halloween season is Frankenweenie. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I plan to rewatch it this year. It’ll tug at your heart. Give it a shot, and let me know what you think!! It’s one of the lesser talked about Tim Burton movies.
I have been a huge fan of Paula Brackston lately if you're still looking for cozy reads! Every 🥧single 🥧one 🥧 of her books does not disappoint! Good, wholesome reads!
Would like to recommend The Tain to you, its an Irish epic poem which has been compared to The Iliad etc. it follows one of our main folklore stories. Since it's October and Halloween originated in Ireland!
If you haven't watched Over The Garden Wall you simply MUST! (It's technically a 10 part mini series but I always watch it all together as a movie), a perfect cozy spooky animated masterpiece!
Anything by Anne Rice is fun to read. She has other series as well. Lestat is a character you will never forget. So fun! The whole series is addictive.
If you're in Yorkshire, UK, PLEASE take the hike/very steep uphill walk to visit Sylvia Plath's grave! I did it yesterday and it is 100% worth it!! Love this video!
I’m about 72% through Jonathan Strange and I agree with Emma about the quality of the writing. So good. It stays consistent too. Also reading Slade House by David Mitchell. Weird sort of haunted house.
The Black Cauldron is great if you haven’t seen it. Also, the Disney Silly Symphonies has a short called the Skeleton Dance which is just really heartwarming, spooky and fun. I also highly recommend Buffy, it’s one of my favourite TV shows ever!
I loved “Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell”!!! Such an epic story! Don’t forget to read the notes. (Some people just sometimes skip them) There are incredibly important in this story. :)
I broke my arm yesterday while on a hike, just in time for spooky season 😖 watching you is calming as always and helps me work through the pain, so thank you have a good october
I LOVED The Vampire Lestat as a teenager. I reread it last year (20 years later) and... eh, not so much. Interview With A Vampire is the best of the entire saga, IMO.
I'm reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, and so far it's a very good story. I also read and watched the video Coraline and really enjoyed that one. Also the Witches. Everything else is new to be but they sound like and excellent variety and I hope you enjoy them.
18:15 Ernest Scared Stupid (1991, free on TH-cam) - Ernest's ancestor was the town's priest when it was founded in the 1890s. On Halloween, he and the townsfolk captured a troll that had been terrorizing children and buried the troll alive, sealed in the roots of a blessed tree - but not before the troll placed a curse on the priest's bloodline that each generation will become more and more foolish until being dumb enough to free it again. 100 years later in the 1990s, that's exactly what happens and where the movie begins with Ernest as the town's goofy idiot. Cozy Halloween movie that's half spooky and half silly. For animated, any of the late 90s/early 2000s Scooby-Doo movies like Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, Cyber Chase, or Alien Invaders. They're all great and cozy.
STARLING HOUSE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE READS FROM THIS YEAR!! It's so addictive. I read it in one go (no, my eyes did not vibe with it). Very good atmosphere.
Oh i have just finished the unfortunate side effects of heartbreak and magic and it was such an amazing read! Also loved the recepy detail. Actually tried some and thei are gooood
The Halloween Tree cartoon was a favorite growing up. I still really need to read Strange & Norrell, and some Ryu Murakami. I want to try Thursday Murder Club before the adaptation. It has a great cast. I've been really loving the new Interview with the Vampire series. Books I'm pulling from for October: Magic for Beginners - Kelly Link The Reformatory - Tananarive Due The Little Stranger - Sarah Waters Mongrels - Stephen Graham Jones My Brother's Keeper - Tim Powers Good Night, Sleep Tight - Brian Evenson A Helping Hand - Celia dale King Nyx - Kirsten Bakis
Oh mannnnn Piranesi is one of my favorite books ever but I never really read anything more than 400pgs so that tome terrifies me 😭 it also has a similar premise vaguely to my other favorite book (the night circus) so I know I’ll probably love it but my expectations are sooo high
I too felt intimidated by the length of JS&MN, but please don't be! By the time I was 400 pages in, I wished it was 1000 pages longer. It's ridiculously well written but a very comfortable read. I've heard the audiobook is very good also
@@bmoforever5562 good to know about the audiobook! I just got audible since I listen at work and I’ve been wanting to find a nice long book to make my one credit worth it!
Highly recommend Thursday Murder Club! Haven't gotten around to reading the rest of the series but the first one is solid! My October TBR: Othello // Frankenstein // Carmilla - Sheridan Le Fanu // Coraline - Neil Gaiman // Dracula
I am so interested to see how you get on with Ryu Murakami! I do adore his books although his characters are often hyper violent but also complete outcasts. I believe he is the second best selling Japanese author in Japan after the other Murakami
I just finished We Used to Live Here, and I loved it! It felt like a combination of Leave the World Behind and The House of Leaves, and I'm thoroughly freaked out! I recently also read the Spellshop, which was just what I wanted for a cosy-but-not-too-low-stakes story. Also enjoying The Haunting of Hill House and a re-read of Silver in the Woods and Drowning Country for the atmosphere. I have a long list of both new and re-reads for fall, and I don't know what to chose next! Anyway, thanks for the fall vibes, always a treat :)
Jonathan strange and mr norrell tv show was very good - I only watched it recently and it’s available on TH-cam too! It was worth the watch but if you don’t wanna know any of the story before you read it - wait till after ❤
for The Vampire Lestat, the main thing is just to go into it with the knowledge that it is a different narration and so the tone is different because of that. I think at least the first six books in The Vampire Chronicles is good in a literary sense and then the plot is truly lost after those books lol.
I also loved interview with a vampire. Lestat is also good, get ready for some ancient vampires. It’s a good origin story, paints him in a whole new light. Just not sunlight… lol. Just finished the exorcist for October. One of the creepiest books I’ve ever read. ❤ listening to you talk. I find your voice to be incredibly soothing. Also love your content. Keep up the good work. 😊
Excited to hear your thoughts re: The Vampire Lestat! I really really hope you're watching/planning to check out the 2022 show adaptation Interview with the Vampire on AMC, it's INCREDIBLE!!!!!!! Genuinely the best show I've seen in years, maybe the best show I've ever seen, period. I started reading the Vampire Chronicles because of the show and have read up until Memnoch the Devil (Book 5) so far. Not planning on reading any more for now, but I actually did enjoy the books, lol. Imo, it really starts to fall off during Queen of the Damned (Book 3) but every single event in one of these books is so batshit that it's impossible not to be entertained, at the very least. Every once in a while, Rice also hits you with something really eloquent about grief and/or the human condition that the weirdness of it all and the tangents you have to slog through kind of make it worth it. Okay this got long but yes The Vampire Lestat is a highly enjoyable book, just keep in mind the insane (in a good way) tonal shift, but aside from that, the Gothic decadence still delivers. Lestat's backstory is the most insane thing ever, I love it, and can't wait to see it adapted in the show. INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE SEASON 3 2025 LET'S GOOOOOOO
Since its exam month I have only kept two books to mainly read this month; Dune and phantom of the opera. Been catching dust in the shelf for years now
"The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern is something I'm REALLY enjoying -- Victorian era, young magicians in training. Also "The Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood" is a really odd and creepy collection. Love your channel!
I was watching a movie last night geared towards a younger audience that has to do with a group exploring interactive dreams. Not exactly spooky but a little intriguing. It's called Silver And The Book Of Dreams.
My October TBR is Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone, Coraline, Dracula, maybe Picture of Dorian Gray, maybe Rebecca! Movie recs: Basil Rathbone's Hound of the Baskervilles From Time to Time Mary Shelley
I am currently reading Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen, which I think you'd love! I accidentally read the sequel, First Frost, last year and it made it onto my favorites of 2023 list! I think you'd especially love First Frost because it is the ultimate cozy, Autumnal, charmingly magical book!
I read by mood rather than season; I’m currently reading Joe Abercrombie’s The Blade Itself, and really enjoying it. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell will likely be my next read, and then possibly book 7 of The Wheel of Time series.
If you haven't seen the hotel transylvania films, i highly recommend them! Also 'Alvin and the chipmunks meet frankenstein' is quite fun! I loved 'Something wicked this way comes' by Ray Bradbury and it was great for october, so im excited to see your thoughts on the halloween tree! That cover is stunning!
Emma, I've already recommended a podcast to you, but I'm not sure if you've listened to it, so I'll recommend it again! Death in Ice Valley. It's sooooo good. It's very atmospheric, intriguing and has a lot about hotels in it.
Please, oh please, watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!! That show has changed and saved my life countless times. It is so much more than an episodic, campy horror. I grows and shapes as Buffy goes through her life, and I've been growing up with it for a few years now. IMO it is the epitome of TV and what TV should be. To be completely frank, you and btvs have been keeping me going in the roughest patches of my life, don't know where I would be without either of you
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on 'The Vampire Lestat.' I read 'Interview' only after you talked so highly of it a couple years ago, so I might just have to follow suit with this next one. I also want to recommend 'The Gilda Stories' if are looking for more novels that dissect vampire lore and discuss the toll that immortality would take on a character. It begins in 1850 and follows a character initially called 'the girl' as she lives (or, you know, doesn't live) through the 20th century. I read it last year and it has stuck with me since then. Love the TBR! 🦇🎃

The Reformatory - Tananarive Due
The Little Stranger - Sarah Waters
Mongrels - Stephen Graham Jones
My Brother's Keeper - Tim Powers
Good Night, Sleep Tight - Brian Evenson
A Helping Hand - Celia dale
King Nyx - Kirsten Bakis
you need to watch the interview with a vampire tv series !!!!! it’s fantastic
@@bmoforever5562 I definitely plan to use my next months audible credit on it!!
Ben Okri I learned about during an English class. He embraces the concept of magical realism which I enjoy.
Spooky season is the best 🎃
Highly recommend Thursday Murder Club! Haven't gotten around to reading the rest of the series but the first one is solid!
My October TBR: Othello // Frankenstein // Carmilla - Sheridan Le Fanu // Coraline - Neil Gaiman // Dracula
6:50 emma you have to read the six deaths of the saint by alix e harrow! it's only like 30 pages but sooo good!!
I am so interested to see how you get on with Ryu Murakami! I do adore his books although his characters are often hyper violent but also complete outcasts.
I believe he is the second best selling Japanese author in Japan after the other Murakami
I am physically reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and listening to Man of Shadow and Mist by Michelle Griep.
Igor and Hotel Transylvania
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is great, Coraline is another great one. Love your picks, Emma! Your red lipstick is gorgeous! 💖☺️
Paranorman and over the garden wall are my spooky season watches. Paranorman is from the same studio who made corpse bride and coraline
Your TBR is so great and almost the same as mine 😊 I am currently reading Starling house !
My current favorite movie is Lisa Frankenstein! I think it's time for a third rewatch over here for October. xoxo
Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell is my favourite book! I love it so much. Excited to see what you think of it
I also loved interview with a vampire.
i love october !!!
Wonderful book review Emmie !
Movie recs:
Basil Rathbone's Hound of the Baskervilles
From Time to Time
Mary Shelley
you would love alix e harrows books! the ten thousand doors of january is something that you would absolutely adore
For animated movies I recommend, Monster house and Paranorman.
That cover is stunning!
picked up the island of dr. moreau after your last rec video! going to save it for the readathon 👻🧡
To be completely frank, you and btvs have been keeping me going in the roughest patches of my life, don't know where I would be without either of you
Pleaseee share the spooky watchlist!!! 🧡
